Boring, pretentious movie is meant to be a thriller / horror, with a stellar 'oscar worthy' casts. It's not thrilling. It's not scary. It has the tone of a satire but it's not funny. It looks like it was made for less of a million when in fact it's budget was 50 million dollars. I think these Hollywood executives has got to think really hard who they gave their money to. On one hand, they looked down on their audiences and gave them 'franchise' pictures like Mandalorian and Grogu that are so generic. Then they gave this movie so much money as the director is a so called 'auteur'. A film that was so left field that nobody wants to watch. Both the Backroom and Obsession, 2026's 'sensations' were made for so little, with so much impact, should give them a lesson on things that people really want to see at home and in cinemas.

So many movies have disappointed me but here's a movie that delivers, though it's offbeat. Offbeat can be good and this is one of those examples. The acting by everybody was good and Emma Stone blew me away. Don't know anything about her as I'm not celeb-oriented so I wonder is she always this good? But as I wrote, everybody did a good job. Little bit of a different soundtrack and sound effects as well, fitting the style of the movie: humor mixed with dead seriousness. The camera work and editing was done superbly. Also the genera atmosphere was well done - something most movies do not well. The big reveal made sense to me and I was happy with it, but the ultimate world-hating nihilistic ending bothers me a bit. It doesn't seem to fit the rest of the film before all that. Absolutely watch this movie if you like an approach which depends less on the usual Hollywood formulas.

Didn't know what to expect when I watched this movie randomly. Emma Stone,Jesse Plemons, and Aidan Delbris synergy on camera was superb. This movie did a great job of having comedy but maintaining a sense of danger and mystery to it. The movie was a great display of holding the camera. Each actor held me in the moment. The end was a delightful twist. I actually bought this for my collection.

Well acted. Definitely not a main stream movie, but the leads do a great job selling the story. Enjoyable, if a bit of an uncomfortable watch, for me at least. Worth watching, in my book.

I was onboard for about 90% of the movie, the flat-earther/conspiracy theorist mind was intriguing but the ending is just botched, it renders the movie a complete farce. Where do I start? First the Andromedans chose earth when their galaxy is twice as populous in stars as ours is, with many more possibilities of having planets in the goldilock zone for them to play with. Then we are to believe that they have been playing with the earth and mankind for so long that erasing it doesn't change the fact that the "Bugonia myth" of bees rising from the carcass of a dead ox is a failure. By provoking the death of all humans on earth whilst claiming that it's to save the earth from humans, the andromedans have actually condemned the earth: 8.3 billion of carcasses rotting is a perfect recipe for breeding flies, hornets, and all sorts of pretty bad insects that feast on rotting carcasses, not to mention rats and others scavengers. The human systems are also left on, which creates instantaneous immense pollution from which the earth doesn't recover. And even if that was not enough, eliminating mankind doesn't mean that evolution stops... it takes a 10-15 million year detour from the great apes that still are free and then we are back to square one after that. Additionally, Teddy's explosion is just laughable, if he is a kind of prepper, he is not going to explode spontaneously like that. With a better ending, Teddy would have been brought to the Andromedans who would have looked at him, analyzed his failures and then erased mankind and their creation in a Thanos-style. Alas, the story prefers 8.3 billion rotting corpses. Good concept, good acting up to Michelle's monologue, after that, it goes down the drain and basically sabotages all the work that was done before that. It's quite funny because the message of the movie is even sabotaged by the nihilistic contradictions that the filmmakers ironically didn't even see coming...

The irony of this film is that Emma Stone's career has been held hostage by Yorgos Lanthimos, and his film Bugonia is about a career woman, played by Emma Stone, who is held hostage. It's yet another film by Lanthimos in which he snickers at the pain and misfortune of others as they torture one another and themselves. Can we all agree that Lanthimos is mentally ill and rescue Emma Stone now?

Emma Stone delivers a great performance here as a cool, calculating CEO who has been kidnapped by Jesse Plemons’ character. The standout, however, is definitely Jesse, who gives a phenomenally sharp, unpredictable, and layered performance. He brings a level of instability and anger to his character, but also moments of kindness and vulnerability that really work. What carries this film is the tension and conflict between the two, making it a genuinely compelling watch.Additionally, the cinematography and visuals are wonderful, with colours that truly pop, complemented by a music score that heightens the tension. However, what ultimately brings the film down is that it doesn’t quite stick the landing. The ending is predictable and feels a bit too on the nose in delivering its message. Still, this is an enjoyable film that illustrates the dangers of unhealthy delusions and class conflict.

Bugonia fits squarely within the “science fiction as metaphor” tradition, where the question being asked is both philosophical and incredibly consequential. Underneath the alien paranoia and kidnapping plot lies a delightfully quirky character study reflected through a **** lens. As a fan of challenging sci-fi, I loved it. Highly Recommended. detroitcineaste

I saw the twist from 2.5 million light years away. It was really the only way the movie could end. The environmental theme was tacked on so clumsily that they may as well have cast a crying Indian. Very ham-handed and preachy. But the performances were great and salvaged the film for the most part. A fun little romp. Emma Stone is always awesome and watchable.

Wonderfully acted with Stone and Plemons playing perfectly opposite of each other. The story keeps you invested as well. It is a very satisfying remake that holds up to the original. My only gripe is that it is a good 10-15 minutes too long. There could have been some easy editing to trim down the runtime to quicken the pace a bit.

It is tragically funny. It is touching a lot of themes that are relevant.Yorgos did an amazing job in directing this film(Oscar worthy). Jesse gives a Powerhouse acting and should have been nominated for an Oscar. The set production is amazingly detailed. Emma is new gen titan in acting. Beautiful casting and costumes. It is a must watch.

Actually, the first thing that stands out to me (other than Emma Stone’s “rock” solid performance), is the film’s musical score - fantabulous use of instruments and the musical arrangements seem to beckon a bygone era of cinema. This was alright, especially at a time when we seem to be struggling to make a decent film with ACTING and not just shock value from an overload of CGI and flashy digital effects.

Bugonia is a compelling film that succeeds largely due to Emma Stone’s outstanding performance. She brings depth and emotional precision to a role that demands vulnerability, anchoring the film with confidence and range. The supporting cast complements her well, delivering consistently strong performances that enhance the story’s impact. The film tackles weighty themes such as mental health, mental illness, and social status with intention and restraint, allowing the narrative to feel both timely and thought-provoking. Bugonia is a well-executed film and a recommendation for audiences seeking substance alongside strong performances.

Like a lot of Marxist arthouse cinema, this film is designed to frustrate. It tells a nihilistic, world-hating story in an intentionally broken format. However, not everyone is looking for order, meaning, or beauty. Some people’s lives are so bad that uplift is not comforting. It is insulting. There should be movies for that state of mind too, movies that do not encourage you, but serve no purpose other than to reflect your bleak outlook back at you. If you want the rational to collapse and the beautiful to become haunted, this delivers.

Blaming conspiracies and secret societies for what they perceive as the orchestrated collapse of fair society, a Dollar Store Charles Manson (Jesse Plemons) and his neurodivergent cousin/acolyte (Aidan Delbis, making his feature film debut) clumsily kidnap the high-profile CEO of a major pharmaceutical company (Emma Stone). They’re sure she’s an incognito extraterrestrial, their ticket to an audience with Adromedan royalty, and subject her to all manner of bizarre tinfoil-hat tortures to prove as much. The socio-political parallels are pretty clear here, with both ideological extremes mocked and stereotyped in similar fashion. Stone’s cold, callous capitalist is every bit the loathsome mogul type, Jeff Bezos in pumps, splashing on ultra-chic trappings while grinding the working class beneath her heel. A face for our corporate distrust that’s remarkably easy to objectify and hate... right up until she’s shaved bald and left shivering in a dark, dingy basement cell. Her captors, meanwhile, are eccentric hayseeds, the type of grassroots wackjobs who call late night talk radio shows to debate ESP and crop circles. We can relate with their pain and frustration, recognize their impotence as helpless cogs in a gigantic machine, while still blanching at the lengths of their violent recourse. Whether purposeful or not, this setup almost exactly mirrors the Luigi Mangione killing and once I recognized that, I couldn’t stop seeing the overlaps. I get it, I don’t like being abused by the big players either, but I’m not quite ready to start gunning down board members in the street. Or lathering them with lotion and strapping them to a car battery, as it were. If that makes Bugonia sound like a total drag, commentary with a hint of plot, then I’ve given the wrong impression. There’s rich, dark humor in the absurdity of all this, doled out with patience and efficiency. High-pressure tension, too, as both parties try to meet in the middle and cracks show in the captor-captive veneer. Plemons and Stone flash a great rapport as contradictory mouthpieces with an equally passionate faith in their beliefs. It kept me on the hook throughout, vibrant metaphors for societal disarray and crazy, twisting head games alike. And holy crap, what an ending! Faced with a resolution that might have favored one party or the other, Bugonia determines that we’re all wrong. And right. And brilliant in our misguided stupidity. I love that it went there.

Does a perfect work of lampooning corporate culture, conspiracy theorists, as well as we the audience. Possibly we the audience most of all. While the script and actors are excellent, the real success of this movie is found in how it constantly subverts the movie viewer's "common sense" guesses about what is true and what is false in this film, and eventually defying a safe ending. I, for one, did not like the ending of this **** for reasons which I respect, therefore it raised the score I gave it.

The elites showed the true shape of the earth in this movie. Not entirely accurate but showed a firmament where the main evil character busted it and all humans died by oxygen deprivation. You can see there’s two moons. And they showed that Antarctica surrounds all the other continents as the outer rim icy and large continent. Earth is indeed flat!

It's tense, disturbing, paranoid and occasionally violent at a perfect balance, delivering enough doubt and distraction to maintain some surprise and poignancy. It has the bones of a psychological horror film but goes the other way into black comedy territory, resulting in an entertaining and unusual watch.

It's a real shame, because about two-quarters of the film are really good. Technically brilliant. The acting is first-rate; I recommend watching it in the original language. Unfortunately, the dialogue becomes unnecessarily drawn out and cumbersome from the halfway point onward. The constant violence, both psychological and physical, is almost unbearable in my opinion, and I had hoped for some respite, which only came towards the end… completely out of place. The depiction of violence, which constantly escalates into more extreme forms without any discernible justification, is also the reason why I can't recommend the film. The artistry is completely lacking here

Far from having the same emotional impact. I had high expectations with Lanthimos directing the Irish version of 'Save the Green Planet', the South Korean film on which this remake is based. The cinematography is mesmerizing; the photography is beautiful and draws the viewer in from the very first moment, accompanied by a soundtrack that is both atmospheric and pleasing to the ears. However, I don’t find the initial sadism of the original, and the aggression is much more diluted here, though it is still present—and in fact, it is what gives the film most of its strength. This version takes an approach I wasn’t expecting, focusing heavily on social and political critique, which left me somewhat disappointed, as I had hoped for a pure science fiction experience. The plot holds together through fairly predictable decisions. One thing I didn’t understand at first was the inclusion of a character like Don (Aidan Delbis), which raises questions about the need for such psychological portraits. It doesn’t bother me, but it wasn’t what I expected; I had been hoping for two completely eccentric, off-the-wall characters. Some differences from the original are successful and give the film its own identity. The soundtrack is immersive and fully draws me into the story. Neither Emma Stone nor Jesse Plemons stand out; I didn’t feel their charisma. The symbolism and abstract elements are unexpected, though relatively coherent with the tone. 'Bugonia' doesn’t disappoint, but it does leave the viewer with mixed feelings.

There are films that are not made to please everyone, and this is one of them. Based on a Korean film, Lanthimos's hallmark is notorious for its surreal and bizarre characters, with a final act that would leave even the Devil himself perplexed.

Wow, Jessie Plemons and Emma Stone are top notch in this film, I couldnt stop watching it! The direction and score are great, although the story itself is bordering on bizarre. It includes foci on subversion, conspiracy theory, mental health, the spectrum of autism, grief and the madness of corporate greed Well worth a viewing, and I’d definitely watch it again!

In ‘Bugonia,’ Yorgos Lanthimos escapes from the boredom and empty provocation of the ‘Kind of Kindness’ triptych, but without reaching the exquisite strangeness unfolded in ‘The Favourite.’ Although it’s relieving to see the Greek director leave behind the self-parody of his previous effort, in this new one, which feels as contained as ‘Kindness’ but with a greater thematic ambition, his nihilistic perspective already seems somewhat exhausted and increasingly superficial. There is no doubt that the film delivers with the acting battle between Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone; however, everything around them lacks the edge of Lanthimos’ early films and the absurdity derived from the Korean movie for which this works as a remake. Referring to ‘Save the Green Planet!,’ what ‘Bugonia’ loses in the bizarre wins in eloquence, but you can’t help to think that this may be Lanthimos’ ‘Eddington,’ an oversimplification of a complex sociopolitical dynamic that shields behind ambiguity to be seen as subversive. Loved the vibe, the photography, and the music, but perhaps it’s time for Yorgos to take a long break, regroup, and come back in the future with a renewed spirit.

The performances in "Bugonia" are great, and the writing is creative. However, it ultimately feels like just another weird and violent film, joining the ranks of many weird and violent films released over the past decade. It seems that "Bugonia" reflects the weird and violent society we have become.

Bugonia might be my favorite Yorgos Lanthimos film. I’ve admired his work before, but this one struck a balance he rarely achieves so cleanly; Deeply unsettling, sharply funny, and strangely humane all at once. The shifting power dynamics between the characters had me hooked. Emma Stone delivers one of her coldest and most commanding performances yet, and Jesse Plemons is absolutely magnetic as an obsessive idealist spiraling into something darker and more unpredictable. Visually, Bugonia is stunning. The cinematography and the eerie, paranoid score create an atmosphere that feels theatrical, claustrophobic, and oddly beautiful. Overall, Bugonia is bold, unsettling, darkly hilarious; At least for me.

Mr. Lanthimos just never misses, does he? What a three strikes in three years in a row, i just loved every shot in Bugonia, as weird and silly as the story gets, from the very beginning, the film locks you in, it immediately pulls you into this unsettling vibe, and a huge part of that comes from Jesse Plemons, whose characters belief feels so real and deeply rooted that you can't help but get drawn into his perspective, no matter how uncomfortable it becomes, i wasn't even surprised by the ending, i could already sense it coming, and i didn't mind at all. The overall structure works so well, and the performances are incredible across the board, especially from Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone, Aidan Delbis is also fascinatingly noticeable, adding an extra layer of discomfort and unease to the whole film. I get why some people might not find it as engaging, but i genuinely love this kind of weirdness Yorgos always brings, maybe his previous two films (Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness) felt more engaging in terms of story and style, but Bugonia hits me as this purely unsettling yet fascinating experience, out of his recent three, this might be the most disturbing one for me, and it was an incredible ride. With Plemons completely embodying his character and Stone being amazing as always, along with the rest of the cast, Bugonia easily stands as one of the best films of the year.

Bugonia is Yorgos Lanthimos at his most acidic and, at the same time, most restrained. The adaptation of Save the Green Planet! embraces absurdity and satirical humor, but relies on a surprisingly didactic script, leaving less room for the subtext that usually characterizes the director.Even so, the tension works, the social commentary is current, and the duel between the characters sustains the film from beginning to end. Emma Stone is great, as always, but it is Jesse Plemons who really steals the show, delivering one of the sharpest performances of his **** ending, of course, is pure Lanthimos: uncomfortable, funny, and incisive. Bugonia may not be the director's most profound work, but it is certainly one of his most entertaining and venomous.Translated with **** (free version)

Not for the weak, but nevertheless a thought-provoking film. Bugonia challenges its viewers conditioned by their various differences in upbringing to assess humanity and its species as a collective from eons past to present day and what Earth’s destiny we could predict from our ongoing political and socioeconomic events. The question begs, from every display of destruction, war, pain, suffering and power used for nefarious means to every monumental leap of discovery, contribution to society and the flourishing of the arts and sciences for mankind, should we all still deserve a place in the sun for Earth’s future. It forces the viewers to assume the role of God, and be met with a nihilism so undeniable humans are and will always be capable of, leaving us wondering if we could’ve objectively done the same as what Michelle did at the end of the film.

WARNING: This movie requires a TRIGGER WARNING, of which i am usually not a fan. This movie is NOT as advertised. It is not just dark, and not just a comic scifi thriller. Rather, It has extended scenes of psychological and extreme physical torture of a woman: imprisonment, binding, shaving, and electrocution. The film's first 20 minutes feature some comedy and near-slapstick, so that's what you expect the tone of the film to be. But then it goes off the rails in seriously disturbing ways, for which you are simply not forewarned by any advertising or by the R rating or by the critics that I originally read. If you like having a philosophical treatise on internet-provoked conspiracy theories and climate change conveyed via scenes of torture, then this is the movie for you. but you should know what you are getting into. If you are forewarned, you might be able to appreciate the rest of it. I would suggest that instead of buying a ticket you donate to a women's shelter.
