Every once in a while there’s a game where I put off completing my review because I'm busy trying to grab the Platinum trophy. The Adventures of Elliot is one of those games. I found entire evenings and weekends disappearing, and even when repetition threatened to set in, I found new ways to shake up the game. Look past the odd pacing foible and this is an excellent action adventure to sink into.

Despite the clear inspirations and somewhat predictable narrative elements, the game comes with some ideas of its own that make it stand out in its own right. Its great dungeon design, variety of weapons, and the Magicite system make it an enjoyable experience for fans of Legend of Zelda-style adventures.

The Adventures of Elliot is not especially ambitious. It is a comforting balm during turbulent times. If you can stomach its occasionally nauseating earnestness, this rich fantasy world is a cosy one to retreat to. And despite my instinctive reaction to the off-puttingly cheesy dialogue, this charming world eventually began to warm even my cold, cynical English heart, thanks to some inspired dungeons and rewarding, customisable combat.

Incredible game with a good story and a fun leveling system. The secrets and upgrades are impactful, and the narrative is charming. The gameplay is very balanced, even on very hard mode, and it features a great superboss.

The art style, music, and the final part of the story are great, but the game becomes extremely repetitive as you move through the same areas across different eras; you can tell it’s artificially padded. The final stretch to unlock the endings and the post-game content feels like a real drag, despite how good the story is. PS: It's a shame about the key-card format on Switch 2, because this game deserves to be played in handheld mode, and that's why I picked it up on PS5 to play with the Portal (while it's still possible). Because of this, it's a -0.5 on the final review score

The HD2D games have so much potential, but this is basically an ARPG Octopath traveller with all the same warts. Visually pretty, mechanically serviceable, narratively bad, and the characters and voice direction are bad enough to warrant skipping the game if those are things you care a lot about. Elliot is a bland, one-note protagonist. The voice direction sounds somewhere between audiobook narration & highschool stage play. I really wish they’d put some effort into the dialogue scripts. If you’ve played the Octopath games you more or less know what you’re getting into in terms of vibes. They also reuse maps and enemies across timelines & for $60 I am just not impressed. People argue that Zelda never had good dialogue either, but this isn’t 1:1 Zelda. The major difference here is that TAoE frequently puts its weakest elements front & center.
