Gothic 1 Remake faithfully revives the original’s harsh RPG design with a strong atmosphere, rewarding progression, and memorable world-building. Technical issues and its unforgiving nature keep it from greatness.
Gothic 1 Remake is definitely a game I recommend to RPG fans, and it's a strong enough vision of a Remake that I honestly feel that anyone interested in Gothic in general could start here and get the same type of experience instead of playing the original if they wanted to (though I am glad I played both and encourage that as well). However, it is a game that does require some patience and tolerance for friction and just a little bit of tedium, which might not be to everyone's taste. Gothic 1 Remake was clearly developed by a team that respects the original game and knew how to reimagine it for a modern audience without compromising what originally made it so special and influential so many years later, creating a very remarkable game in its own right.
Gothic embodies a philosophy regarding RPGs—and video games in general—that has all but vanished today. That is why it is so surprising to see it return in its original form, yet with a completely new look. If Alkimia Interactive’s goal was to bring that same experience back to screens without reinventing the wheel, the mission was a resounding success. We can only hope to one day get our hands on a *Gothic 2* remake as well. However, technical flaws and bugs remain—particularly concerning quest progression—that deserved more attention. Likewise, a more modern take on the combat system would have enhanced the game's overall appeal without necessarily betraying its identity. Ultimately, the Gothic 1 remake is a project of stubborn fidelity; it successfully preserves the original game's charm, yet it is perhaps too timid to distinguish between intentional ruggedness and inherited clunkiness.

I had a great time with the remake. While the game still needs polishing and bug fixes, it successfully captures the spirit of the original while modernizing the presentation. For me, it was an enjoyable adventure, a satisfying RPG experience, and a nostalgic return to a world I was happy to revisit.

Remake that returns my childhood, but now it looks and feels more modern(in good way), gameplay still hardcore for begining, then it just goes on main story where the difficulty goes normal, and sometimes gives you new side quest which doesn't were in original. the story stays loyal to og but have some minor changes that looks more adequately than in og and fixes story and lore holes from 2001 game, UE5 optimization is surpisengly good. Gameplay need some time to adapt, but trust me its worth it. The only not good thing in remake is lockpicking mechanic, its ffs so annoyin, i prefer more old system with left right turning, more easy and understandable, they just could do it more harder, i mean make more up,down, left, right for no level of lockpicking, downleftright for second level and on third level just left, right like on og and that would be perfect. Anyway i realy satisfied this remake, the devs understand the og idea good and not dissapoint fans of the series and legacy of Piranha bites team, hope sales goes good and we gonna see the Gothic 2 Remake!

For me, the Gothic Remake is the ultimate gaming highlight of 2026—the refinement of a classic and a sheer delight for action-RPG fans! Only technical flaws and a somewhat overly deferential adherence to the source material detract from this fan dream come true.

Gothic Remake has plenty of both good and bad aspects: the work by the team at Alkimia faithfully captures the spirit and brutality of the original game, immersing it in an incredible visual style, but just like 25 years ago, the title is plagued by technical issues and bugs of various kinds. That said, it’s a rediscovery of one of the best RPGs ever produced by the gaming industry, capable of captivating players with a brilliant story and a tangible, satisfying sense of progression. Perfect for longtime fans, and perhaps there are a few curious newcomers out there who will discover Gothic this way, through a generally solid remake.

Try Hard Guides
The Gothic 1 Remake is a beautiful graphical upgrade of one of the most incredible RPGs of all time, and I have no doubt that returning fans will love it. However, the game’s performance issues dampen the mood, and certain new bugs and a lack of quality-of-life improvements make it less than a perfect remake. These issues and the lack of modernizing polish may also make it harder for new players to get into the game, especially when paired with the obviously and purposefully dated, difficult gameplay.

Alkimia has delivered a game that captures the strengths of its predecessor, led by a brilliantly constructed world and the brutal harshness of life in the Mining Valley. Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.

Gothic 1 Remake is undeniably the best way to play this cult classic RPG, even if certain aspects of it have aged like milk.

Gothic 1 Remake is a remake that clearly shows a lot of effort went into it. However, it has remained so faithful to its roots that, rather than being a challenging action-RPG adventure, it has ended up as a game that is overly archaic, repetitive, and likely to appeal only to a specific niche of players. On top of that, with serious performance issues and bugs stemming from the Unreal Engine, it falls slightly short of expectations as a remake.

For the hardcore fans of the franchise that just wanted a 1:1 remake of the original without anything added or removed, Gothic Remake is a dream come true. But even the avid Gothic fans are not safe from the performance horrors caused by the Unreal Engine 5, and that makes the Gothic Remake not everybody’s cup of tea.

If you keep at it, after about 30 hours or so the game gradually turns into Witcher3Jokes aside I have no nostalgia for Gothic, hadn't even heard of it until that boxer Jan Błachowicz mentioned it in a random interview I saw a clip of on Instagram. And this is AMAZING. Yes there might be performance issues, and it doesn't have that AAA polish, but the core of the game is just so unique and enjoyable that I cannot put it down. Absolutely worth full price to me.

The positives: Great graphics and story polishing. Good overhaul of melee combat that modernizes the original. Still does not manage to remove all the jank. The negatives: Abysmal mage gameplay compared to the original. Zero play testing and miserable experience as pure mage. Abysmal lock picking system. Unplayable on PS5 on day 1. Overall: If you liked the original, play it. But play as melee with a little bit of magic. If they had balanced mage gameplay, it would be an 8 or 9.

Pros: - Feels very close to the original Gothic - The Colony still feels dangerous and immersive - Chapter 1 is genuinely great and gave me hope this would become one of the best RPG remakes ever made - Character progression is satisfying at first - Some locations are beautifully recreated. Early game captures that classic Gothic feeling of being a weak nobody trying to survive. - Viusals are too rough, after adjusting brightness, contrast and saturation, visuals improve a lot. Prepare! Cons: - Chapters 1 Lies To You. After that everything slowly falls apart. By the end I wasn’t sure if I was playing an RPG or a psychological experiment. Lock-picking - : ) (Hold my Beer) Delivery Simulator 2026* - After Chapter 1 the game becomes a full-time delivery simulator. Camp → Cave → Camp → Cave → Camp → repeat until insanity. NPCs send you across the entire map for few dialogue lines. I felt like a trained monkey doing errands for quest progression. Sometimes it felt like devs were testing patience or whether anyone finishes the game. NPC Hide and Seek - Half the game is searching for NPCs. Just hunting some idiot stuck behind a guard or turned into a living statue for cave spiders, or just gone missing in the world logic. Sometimes the hardest boss is literally finding the NPC. Combat & Movement - Constantly getting stuck on tiny objects. A single stick can be deadlier than an orc. Character sometimes climbs random objects instead of input or goes other way. - Enemy attacks sometimes ignore blocks or roll dodges. Damage feels inconsistent. Enemy patterns can chain multiple smash attacks without pause then they repeat their **** again and 1s pause oh finally maybe I can do 1 hit - Temple Guards punish almost anything Difficulty Balance Early game: hard but fair Mid game: too easy Late game: pure suffering. Difficulty curve falls down a staircase and dies. Goblin cave was a warning: getting two-shot while melee is useless Last Chapters are truly something - First collect golem hearts. Then collect Ulu-Mulu orc weapon monster parts. Defeat orc bosses in the temple for 5 gems. - Back to Xardas, then go to water mages and upgrade your sword. Then enter sleeper temple again. Then kill monsters and guards again yayyy! Then kill demon. Then even more demons. Then defeat final demon. Repeat until soul leaves body. :3 BTW Temple Guards are harder than demons. Funny is that demons look like straight outta Doom game. Whole section feels like mandatory overtime instead **** finale. Grinding - Forced to fight underleveled or overpowered enemies. Otherwise farm scavengers or wolves for hours. - Character hits like wet cardboard without grind. - Did scavenger mount quest just to stop running everywhere like a madman before teleport runes. Bugs - Way too many quest bugs. Did they even test this game? - Digger from delivery quest became personal stalker, respawning constantly. Got rid of Mud, got even worse replacement - Quests refuse to progress. Reloading saves often required. Entire quests sometimes repeated. Sometimes you just pray it works - NPCs randomly disappear - Camps sometimes become hostile for no reason - NPCs fight each other randomly - Dialogue feels artificial at times - Characters act like they have memory loss. Thorus sometimes acts like I was never part of their camp - NPCs schedules worse than original Gothic. Some NPCs sleep at 8-10 am. - Merchants lack ore and items - Sleeping doesn’t restore HP - Swamp Camp is a navigation nightmare, had to ask novices like I was in coma for 10 years. - Swamp islands everywhere, easy to fall into mud. - Lighting feels overexposed, like the world is burning your eyes. Felt like Edward from Twilight stepping into sunlight. Some areas have near-white ground from over-brightness. Despite strong art direction, presentation can look washed out, overly bright or dark, and strange gray. Original was yellowish less dark. Feels like permanent chromatic aberration, grain, post-processing is always on. After tweaking settings it improves, but base look is inconsistent and rough - Final demon is rough enough already. Hands start chasing you from the ground like horror cardio. Sleeper dream sequences feel unnecessary and unfriendly. Ending feels weird, sad, and annoying at the same time. Instead of satisfaction, I just wanted it to end. Several times I was close to uninstalling. ***Final Verdict*** Chapter 1: 7.5/10 Chapters 2-4: 6.5/10 Chapters 5-6: 3/10 Final Score: 4/10 Starts as faithful remake. Slowly turns into delivery simulator, grind, bugs, NPC hunt and frustration. The closer you get to the end, the more it feels like you’re fighting the game itself instead of the world. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I didn’t beat the game, I escaped it after end. Note: Game barely runs on consoles, crashing a lot 15-30 fps, deleting saves and some folks give it 10 out of 10. Wow

It´s maybe understandable for the developer to not only adopt the good parts, but also the bad parts of the original gothic into the game as to not offend the most important group of buyers, the fans of the original with nostalgia. It´s sad, because the game as a whole is just outdated and having a game that adapts the undoubtedly good parts about the original but polishes out the bad parts would have had a real place in todays gaming environment. Positives: -The world is beautiful -No handholding is very pleasant -The game rewards upgrades a lot, getting a new armor makes one feel much more powerful. I personally liked this aspect a lot Negatives: -The fighting feels just bad, even after mastering the skills. "It´s supposed to be this way" is not a quality assessment, but an excuse that is brought up a lot. -The attrition is over the top, esp not being allowed to rest by sleeping most of the time is absolutely ridiculous imo. -The game is buggy beyond belief, to an extend in fact, that even if one completely loves every aspect about the game, I do genuinly not understand how they could justify giving it anything more above a 7/10 just based on the current state of the game. If you loved the original and want a prettier game that feels exactly like it, i.e. if you are here for the nostalgia, you can get the game and probably enjoy it. If you are new to the series and consider buying it for a new experience, I would pass on it, especially at the current price point and at the technical state. I would rate the game 5/10 if not for the inexcusible technical state. 3/10.
