Backrooms could have easily been disposable internet-horror junk food—a feature-length extension of creepypasta aesthetics with nothing underneath. Instead, Parsons delivers something far more haunting: an affecting horror film about imprisonment, memory distortion, and the private hell of mistaking isolation for refuge.

With connective tissue linking it to both Skinamarink and Synecdoche, New York, Backrooms is a chillingly ambitious debut that finds the terror in enclosed spaces and echoing silences. It’s a screen nightmare that could easily work its way into viewers’ real ones.

Debut director Kane Parsons assuredly harnesses the creepy, mind-bending potential of this liminal concept, delivering an original horror that has both the scares and the smarts.

Parsons proves to be an expert manipulator of space with the camera.

Backrooms is undeniable, both as a future load-bearing pillar of the internet-born horror movement that’s now breaking ground and for being built on a concept that feels truly new.

Backrooms suggests that while we’re teetering on the verge of something new, filmmakers are going to have to do more work to wrestle these nonnarrative, non-centralized ideas into something that can sustain a story.

It's like watching fantastically dull scenarios from the 2007 first person video game Portal apparently a source of inspiration for Parsons. There are breaks for backstory — Clark had a volatile marriage; Mary's mother was sectioned — but these add little meaningful context or narrative grounding.

Can be more stressful and more scary but lore accurate, it was a good movie but fore an horror movie that could be more interesting

Such a mid movie. You can tell it was done by a 20 year old because there wasn't much to the story. Just a few good scares, but the movie just ends without any context. It could've been so much better, and explored so much more concepts.

Absolute garbage compared to the original videos. Not good at all. Too much unnecessary bull crap that doesn’t matter. The monster was stupid and not scary at all compared to the originals. It’s like reading a really good book and then seeing the movie and it ****. I figured the movie wouldn’t be as good as the original videos but it was way worse than I thought. Boring and stupid. I’m just in shock at how bad it was. If Kane had more say in the movie I guarantee it would’ve been better. I’m assuming he didn’t have a lot of say in the movie. I just can’t believe how bad it was. The monster wasn’t anything at all like the original videos were. They were mysterious and scary in the originals. The monster in the movie was so obvious and just not scary at all. Also the ending was so abrupt and predictable. I seriously just cannot get past how bad it was.
