Backrooms could have easily been disposable internet-horror junk food—a feature-length extension of creepypasta aesthetics with nothing underneath. Instead, Parsons delivers something far more haunting: an affecting horror film about imprisonment, memory distortion, and the private hell of mistaking isolation for refuge.

Casts a surrealistic spell that’s unlike anything else in contemporary cinema.

This movie, holy, I loved the concept of the movie, it really made me think, and when it got to the end, I really REALLY wanted more. Still, I think it ended really well, covered everything that needed to be covered, the actors did insanely well, and it kept me glued to the screen the entire time. The fact that they didn't have a huge budget, it just makes you even more impressed. I think this is a must watch, and I will be watching the next movie when it comes out.

I liked a lot because it was very good and confusing. Some people don’t like it because it’s confusing but that’s the point of the backrooms. “It’s like explaining a dog to someone who’s never seen one before, then asking them to draw one”

Debut director Kane Parsons assuredly harnesses the creepy, mind-bending potential of this liminal concept, delivering an original horror that has both the scares and the smarts.

Parsons proves to be an expert manipulator of space with the camera.

Backrooms is undeniable, both as a future load-bearing pillar of the internet-born horror movement that’s now breaking ground and for being built on a concept that feels truly new.

Backrooms suggests that while we’re teetering on the verge of something new, filmmakers are going to have to do more work to wrestle these nonnarrative, non-centralized ideas into something that can sustain a story.

It's like watching fantastically dull scenarios from the 2007 first person video game Portal apparently a source of inspiration for Parsons. There are breaks for backstory — Clark had a volatile marriage; Mary's mother was sectioned — but these add little meaningful context or narrative grounding.

Really strong first half of the movie, but much weaker second half. Overall decent, but not something I’d care to watch twice. I would be interested in a sequel though.

It was a fine movie but not amazing. I liked the cinematography. I also liked the using of the found footage technique. But I think the movie could have been better.

I know very little about the online vids/story and games that this movie is based on, but I did not like the movie. It's very slow and confusing. When you think there's going to be an explanation about what's going on, you learn there won't be an explanation, and then the movie ends. I have my assumptions about what is going on based on the last few scenes, but the movie as a whole isn't worth the price of admission.
