You just know that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is speeding face-first into a relatively muted response from critics and consumers alike. They will appreciate the art style and energy, but we don’t really have a framework in gaming to properly celebrate the kind of experience that the game is. Less challenging than Mario, less expansive than Donkey Kong, and less intricate than a Hollow Knight, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is best thought of as a toybox, filled with playthings for the imagination and rewarding if you approach it that way, rather than as a traditional “game.” I personally think it’s utterly wonderful, but then I spend my entire life chasing creative whimsy.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a fantastic cozy platformer. Finding new discoveries never gets old. I was worried the pace might be too tame for my liking, but this simply wasn't the case. I kept wanting to play and discover more, even after putting in 7 hours into the title. Later chapters were very rewarding, and there are enough challenging moments to keep it from feeling boring. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is the perfect addition to the Switch 2 library for gamers wanting something fresh and unique.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book swaps traditional platforming levels for a cozy, creature-cataloging safari set in a gorgeous sketchbook world. While praise is due for its charming visuals, the experience is held back by restrictive, tiny levels and tedious trial-and-error puzzles. Ultimately, it remains a beautiful, worthwhile ride for fans despite its stop-and-start pacing.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book may look like another spin-off title, but it features new forms of gameplay. The unfolding levels and gameplay discovery are well worth it and it will please platformer fans as well as players open to experimenting within the genre. It boosts a ton of ideas and is far from just an easy kids' game this time.

Take it as an adventure of discovery and the game largely succeeds, albeit with little challenge.

Unfortunately, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is less a platformer and more a bloated, drawn-out homework assignment. The critters are cute, and Yoshi is as adorable as ever, but there's almost nothing to do and too much of it at once. It's easily one of 2026's most disappointing games.

I absolutely loved Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on Nintendo Switch 2. This is, in my opinion, an outstanding game with a wonderful artistic direction. Every level feels unique, creative, and full of charm. I believe that this game is at his best when you experienced it slowly. A one-hour session where you discover one or two new creatures at a time is the ideal way to play it. It isn’t a game designed to be rushed from start to finish in a few sittings, as doing so can become tiring. Taking your time will allow you to fully appreciate its creativity and atmosphere. The amount of content is also impressive for a Yoshi game. I’ve already played for around 15 hours, and I still have three chapters left to discover. I think this is a game made for everyone, but you have to be open to the idea that it isn’t a traditional platformer. Indeed it focuses much more on exploration, discovery, and creativity than on constant action. For me, this is a true must-have exclusive and an essential game for every Switch 2 owner.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a charming, accessible adventure packed with varied content. Its lovely art direction, different ways to play, and curiosity-driven concept make it very enjoyable. However, the gameplay and music can become repetitive, while the controls sometimes feel overly simple. The lack of local multiplayer is also disappointing, as the game would have been even more fun with two players. A good family-friendly game, even if it is not essential. 7/10

This is a very cozy, low stakes game. Visuals and sound design fit well for what this adventure is about. The "overworld" is very well designed and something I really haven't seen used much or at all before. I have to say I was kind of confused at first because it was so unorthodox but after taking some time to figure out what the game was about it all makes sense. Gameplay is interesting and varied. There's always something new that you're doing and learning about which is a huge plot point in the story. As I was playing through this game I found myself wishing some of the level design was like older entries, it felt like every new level had some gimmick attached to it where some were hits and some I was just trying to get through as quickly as I could. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is actually a fantastic entry point for new or young gamers. It's set up in a way where you can explore as much as you want or as little and still progress through the different chapters. This isn't quite what I was expecting from this game but it knows what it wants to be and did a fairly good job with it. You can tell that a lot of love and creativity was poured into this and I think it'll be a great entry for kids or those looking for a completely chill experience. For me it does get rather repetitive and there's not much challenge to it but I see where they were going with this one and I've played through enough of it to know this is not my favorite Yoshi game but it is a competent and unique one for the right audience.

Die Level sind zwar abwechslungsreich gestaltet und enthalten interessante Mechaniken, doch es fehlt an echter Herausforderung. Rätsel und Gegnerdesign bleiben meist auf einem simplen Niveau, sodass weder strategisches Denken noch präzises Plattforming wirklich gefordert werden. Für erfahrene Spieler entsteht dadurch kaum ein Gefühl von Progression oder spielerischer Tiefe. Diese fehlende Herausforderung wirkt sich direkt auf die Langzeitmotivation aus. Obwohl das Spiel mit Sammelobjekten und optionalen Zielen arbeitet, fehlt der Anreiz, sich intensiv mit den Inhalten auseinanderzusetzen. Der Wiederspielwert bleibt begrenzt, da Erfolgserlebnisse selten erarbeitet werden müssen. Gerade im Vergleich zu anderen Yoshi-Titeln oder modernen Platformern fehlt es an einem ausgewogenen Difficulty Curve und belohnendem Leveldesign. Besonders schade ist das, weil das Fundament stimmt: Die Kernmechanik rund um das „Buch“-Konzept bietet viel Potenzial für kreative Levelgestaltung und innovative Puzzle-Ansätze. Mit mehr Anspruch, komplexeren Herausforderungen und besserer Progression hätte sich Yoshi and the Mysterious Book zu einem echten Highlight im Genre entwickeln können. Insgesamt bleibt ein optisch beeindruckendes, aber spielerisch unterforderndes Abenteuer, das maximal für jüngere Spieler oder Einsteiger geeignet ist. Wer jedoch auf der Suche nach anspruchsvollem Platforming und langfristiger Motivation ist, wird schnell das Interesse verlieren.
