Dynasty Warriors 5 fixes the [slowdown] problem by using a smoother game engine. Not only does the game look sharper, but slowdown is reduced to almost nil.

There's still no significant camera control, and the fighting certainly still gets repetitive, but series fans probably won't mind one bit. [Apr 2005, p.61]

Just be warned that this is one long, long fight and even though the game may be epic it would be nicer if it was not quite such a gigantic tale to slowly read through.

Dynasty Warriors 5 is the peak of the series a classic formula, massive battles, iconic Three Kingdoms heroes, and endlessly satisfying hack and slash combat. Its refined mechanics, smoother performance, and huge roster make it the most polished and addictive entry of the PS2 era. A timeless gem for fans of large-scale action.

The critic in me tells me this series needs to innovate, but as a gamer I'm once again completely satisfied by the experience. Defying conventional wisdom, Dynasty Warriors is unique in that the gameplay achieves a near perfect harmonious balanced and change would only upset that.

With the fog finally pushed back to a manageable horizon and smooth gameplay, this is the version to get. [May 2005, p.134]

Pinacle of the series. Played them all For a long time I've debated 3vs5. Hot take, but I see 4 as a step in the wrong direction and 5 reverted back towards the look and feel of Dynasty Warriors 3. Not sure how DW4 has become a fan favourite, its dull, slow, poorly balanced and the sound effects are close to unbearable to me. If DW4 didnt exist, DW5 would be a seamless, perfect sequel to DW3, however i do miss my bodygaurds!

After seven games in 4 1/2 years, we simply need more evolution in the next iteration. [May 2005, p.74]

The action might draw fighting-game fans, but Dynasty Warriors has no real back-and-forth. [May 2005, p.89]

Odds are you'll simply grow tired of grinding through the same battles yet again, with only a half-baked storyline to keep you interested. Ultimately, you're probably better off waiting until Koei announces the inevitable first Dynasty Warriors 5 spin-off, rather than picking up this game.

Those of you who haven't experienced Dynasty Warriors before are better off picking up a cheaper, older version for your introduction. Trust me: you won't be missing much.

This game is very repetitive. The missons are always similar. There are only differences with the weapons that the characters (which by the way there are lots of) have. It can be entertaining for a while but that's all. However, if you like to kick some ass, you may enjoy this game a lot.

Out of all DW PS2 games, DW5 has the most boring visual style (e.g. bland colour palette, lack of visual feedback when striking enemies or using the Musou attack), sound effects (listen closely and compare DW5's to DW3's), attack elements (sorry I don't know how you say this in English since I played the Japanese version, but all the previous elements are gone, fire and ice are left but dumbed down, and there is only one new element that is useful) and weapon drop system. I am saying this as a critical Musou fan. And for the love of god, KOEI, Musou games do NOT need any remaking because DW3, DW4, SW1 are good enough. Got that? Stop ruining the reputation of the series.

SummaryThe fifth full installment of the Dynasty Warriors series of action games will again be based on Luo Guanzhong's historic novel, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" taking players back in time and onto the battlefields of Ancient China. In the game, players experience the thrill of fighting single-handedly against nearly endless legions of e... Read More
