A joyless game. Every section feels like a tedious lateral thinking puzzle – "the farmer has a fox, a chicken and some grain, but can only carry one at a time" – and the locations and creatures are half-heartedly designed. If you haven't played it, it provides valuable insight into where Resident Evil, and perhaps games at large, went wrong over the past decade or so. Other than that, it feels like work.

An uneven but occasionally excellent update to one of Resi's most overlooked entries. [March 2016, p.74]

There are plenty of pacing and puzzle problems, but Zero can still be a horror hero at its best. [March 2016, p.87]

This game could've been a fan favourite, but got a couple of big flaws that instead makes it one of the most controversial in the series. I want to start with the good stuff though, because they deserve a bit of recognition: as its contemporary REmake, the ambiences are gorgeous, especially the train section in my opinion, the maps are fun to navigate and it makes you want to explore. The mechanic of the double protagonist is a cool idea, even though it appears to be a bit unbalanced I think, you want to use Billy to fight most of the time and Rebecca for healing and strategic reasons, also the game is definitely more combat-based than REmake, it's harder to avoid enemies and the amount of ammo it throws at you is definitely a hint, this is not necessarily a bad thing, just be prepared for a more action experience. I liked the focus on story progression with all the cutscenes they put in, they are well done and you just like to see them in a game like this. Speaking of story it's nothing exceptional, but it is fun, the lore gets extended, there are also ties to Resident Evil 1 of course, 0 being the prequel, even if a bit forced to be honest. Other already known characters make appearances and so on... Ok now I will be brief with the negatives, because they are simple but huge problems: the enemy placement and enemies in general are unfair, too many narrow hallways that I often needed to reset the zombies by exiting the room to regain an advantage, some of them can also stunlock you, I hate them monkeys... the bosses are not good, boring, clunky, on one of them I actually got softlocked and had to restart the game, so I did 1.5 runs of the game. The inventory system, well I just don't know why they decided not to put chests in this one, maybe because they were trying to put together a more hardcore experience than the REmake, but in the end it's not harder, it just takes longer to gather your items all around the place when you have to move to another area, sad. So yeah it's not that bad, but please DO NOT play this game on hard mode, it is already challenging in normal mode, all the flaws get amplified in hard mode in my opinion, I let my pride get the better of me, don't do my mistake (at least for the first run).

I'm currently doing a RE marathon, I've played a few RE games but tbh, this is easy the one I've grinded my teeth at the most and huffed whenever I find another puzzle because I just think "how much more do I have to do?" I think the game wouldn't be as bad if the inventory system was like the other games, and it shows because they never did the inventory system in this game in other games. As a result there is a ridiculous amount of back tracking. I'm giving it a 6- as the only REAL saving grace is learning more of the RE lore, gameplay is meh, characters meh, graphic meh, puzzles lower end of meh, only buy this game if you plan on doing an RE lore deep dive. Otherwise, don't. It's a pretty frustrating and shell shocking experience MOTT.

This HD remaster of Resident Evil 0 is an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoyed the original GameCube release and has enough patience to navigate the sometimes tedious inventory management.

Loved the unique, mysterious train atmosphere. Interesting characters interactions and their gameplay codependency. I liked the location exploring and character development.

Resident Evil 0 HD is a good remaster of one of the less attractive chapters from the Resident Evil franchise. Despite this, in the modern market this game is still a gem, and every survival horror fan should buy it.

Suffers from cumbersome inventory management and tedious back-tracking that kill the flow and tension considerably...This one's only for dedicated followers of the series.

It's certainly not the best in the series, but it's a creepy game with a great atmosphere and one where you actually have to plan ahead. If only they fixed that ruddy camera.

really solid stuff here. the gameplay is fine here and definitely feels really dated, however the story is more then engaging enough. this serves as a really interesting prequel which fills in a lot of gaps and gives us a really great duo is rebecca and billy. they really work together and the journey they go on is as entertaining as it is interesting.

Don't bother playing this is 2024. Swaps the charm of the original for frustratingly painful "co-op" gameplay. Tanky controls, annoying inventory management (not the overal concept, the finicky swapping items between characters and lack of a magic box make selecting your limited inventory just painful, not to mention picking the crap back up again) Shows ALL of its age.
