This remake could almost be described as a new game. But is it really Resident Evil without the laughably bad voice acting? [Feb 2003, p.96]

An incredibly impressive re-imagining of a gaming classic.

The graphics are some of the best we have ever witnessed in a game to date, the storyline has been refined giving you more information about Umbrella and STARS, the game itself is pure genius.

The best Resident Evil experience of all time. Item management, story, characters, horror factor, replayability, bosses, enemies, weapons.

I'm not usually into horror games or movies. They tend to bore me. This franchise peaked my interest though for some reason, and I really enjoyed the movies. When I tried this game I wasn't expecting much, but I LOVED it. The slow pace, the tension, and yes also the action scenes. It was so much fun, specially when your friends were either playing, or watching you play, and had some jump-scares on our playthrough. It was magic. I haven't been able to replicate it since.

Un remake ejemplar que no solo respeta el original, sino que lo mejora en todos los aspectos, convirtiéndose en la versión definitiva de Resident Evil.
Remake fiel y mejorado.
Atmósfera increíble.
Nuevos enemigos (Crimson Heads).
Diseño de la mansión perfeccionado.
Gran equilibrio entre lo clásico y lo moderno.
Puntos débiles:
Controles tipo tanque.
Ritmo lento para algunos.
Puede ser difícil.

From the moment the first cutscene runs, you are totally sucked in. Your heart rate jumps as you walk through the hallways, and no feeling is worse than being out of ammo and wounded… everything about this game sucks you into the role of the characters.

If you've never played RE before, the remake will scare you to death. And if you have played through it before, it still will scare you to death! Maybe not as much, but you will jump out of your seat at least once -- I guarantee it.

While the controls can be frustrating, the creepy ambiance is taken to a whole new level. [31 May 2002, p.112]

It is undeniably one of the best looking games ever made for any platform, period. The sound and music are appriopriately spooky.

With the exception of the dated control scheme, Capcom has nearly perfected its craft and created the best Resident Evil ever.

Unfortunately, this version of Capcom's seminal survival horror title doesn't play as good as it looks. As a matter of fact, it plays a whole heck of a lot like the original Resident Evil.

The best entry ever — a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. The puzzles are great, the atmosphere is terrifying, and the mansion is beautifully designed. The characters are legendary, the enemies are frightening, and the mystery, horror, and exploration make everything about it amazing.

With its slow paced gameplay and fixed camera angles Resident Evil was a truly scary survival horror title and this is a superb update of the PSone original that improves the graphics and adds in a few extra elements as well. Of course the flaws, such as the clunky controls and terrible voice acting are still present but even today this is a game still worth playing.

This review is for the PS5 version of the game.
RE1 kicked off one of the longest lasting videogame series in history and defined the survival horror genre back in 1996. Only for that you have to give this game a credit. This remake takes the original and makes it even better. Besides the visual upgrade, there have been several changes to gameplay and story, but all of them are welcome. That beeing said, the game doesn't do anything groundbreaking new. The formula of 1996 remains unchanged. That's a positive thing, if you like that formula. Or a negative thing, if you don't. Like most old school games of that time it is not very user-friendly and very unforgiving towards mistakes. You mostly end up in bad situations because of something you couldn't know, because the game didn't tell you. The biggest enemy of the game are the camera angels that don't let you see what's ahead of you. Or the inventory management, or deciding when to save and when not to. In general the game has nothing to do with skill, but with knowing where what is and making the right decisions at the right time. This makes the first walk through a frustrating experience. It's the replaying of the game, where the fun comes in. Trying to achieve the perfect run on even harder difficulties is the essential part of this game. The problem with this is, if you are used to modern games you will probably not have a good time with this game. As a remake I think there should be more options to make this more accessible to new players. As a matter effect I would call this a remaster rather than a remake. But I have to rate this as what it claims to be. And as a remake it lacks the innovation it needs to bring it to a new generation. But here is hoping for a "real" remake coming at some point down the line. I would still recommend this version over the original since it is better in every way. But you should see it as a simple improvement (remaster), not the reimagining (remake) it claims to be.

Resident Evil 1, while undoubtedly influential in shaping the survival horror genre, Its outdated controls, laughable voice acting, frustrating resource management, and aged graphics make it a title that fails to live up to the exaggerated praise it often receives. While it may hold a special place in the hearts of those who experienced it in its heyday, modern gamers may find it difficult to see beyond the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia.
SummaryYou take control of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team members Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine (both recently seen in the smash hit, Resident Evil 5). Your mission is to investigate the ominous mansion at the core of the horrific disaster and uncover the secrets behind a radical, genetic research facility. With unspeakable horrors lurking around ev... Read More
