Hollow Knight8
Jul 29, 2020
Hollow Knight is so good. But it might be too big for its own good at times. It makes exploration so satisfying but sometimes backtracking can be a bit of a slog since most tram stations are so far apart and the map is so large. That being said this is one of my favorite games ever. Very excited for Silksong.

Ghost of Tsushima7

This game was very good. I would almost say its great but its somewhat unpolished in some aspects. Its combat is where this game drops the ball a bit. Enemy AI is laughably dumb, camera can get in the way too much and there isnt much that can be done to remedy this since you fight with the face buttons. Stance switching wasnt very nuanced at all. Just there to stagger enemies and leave them open. Most other attacks you unlock for stances are pretty much useless as they arent anymore viable than your basic moves. Other aspects of the gameplay include doing some pretty great side stories, some of which span the entirety of the game with many twists and turns. Although the endings to them can be hit or miss. This gane never really gets repetitive either. Theres alot of different collectibles to find and mongol territories to do. But since you can tackle then in any order its really your fault if it becomes repetitive. The story was well done with well written characters. Some archs i wouldve liked to see a bit more fleshed out. Overall, this game was good and I welcome a sequel if **** Punch chooses to return to Jin Sakai in the future.

Got this game from PS Plus. Was interested in it before as I enjoy interative stories. Biggest issue with this gans is the controls. I can get over using the touchpad even though its not the nost precise thing in the world, it gets the job done. However, the game forces you to hover over dialogue and just release your finger off the touchpad. The creators know the touchpad is also a button right? This might seem like an issue but the touchpad has an incredibly small surface area. Meaning youre going to be adjusting your fingers sometimes. And since it only takes you releasing the touchpad it can force you to make decisions you didnt want to make. This is less of an issue on a phone since most screens are over 5 inches now. But just getting your phone ready for this gane can be a hasle anyway so its hardly ideal. The story is also unnecessarily convoluted and poorly paced. This lady claims she wants to help you even though she traumatized you for life. I'd go further into how this story makes very little sense but i'd be here all day. Overall, this game is okay. Being as i got it for free theres not much to complain about. Theres also many diffrrent endings and outcomes to decisions judging by the trophy list. I dont know why anyone would want to actuallg play the game to see them through but they are there.

The Last of Us Remastered9
Jul 9, 2020
Tlou is nearly flawless in its storytelling. Characters are beautifully written and acted. My only gripe is that the gameplay itself is merely acceptable. It didn't have me wanting more of its gameplay. But still it's good enough for the game to not be boring on a first playthrough. Which is all the characters need to blow you away.

God of War8
Jul 2, 2020
God of War is simply put amazing. Its combat is unique and satisfying. This game clearly goes for a blend of methodical combat like Dark Souls with more offensive focused pure hack and slash like the originals. That being said it does stumble in many areas of its combat. The importance of positioning is lessened since you and enemies all has be this slight "auto-positioning" feature attached to them thats glides you or the enemy to a position where the attack thrown can connect. Which leads to the game sometimes moving you towards on enemy you had no intentions of attacking first. The game has a very half assed rpg system, its camera is too close for alot of the encounters it puts you in although the fact that the player can attack and move the camera can negate this issue in many cases, its can still lead to some frustrating deaths. However, the combat can force you into being far more thoughtful in your approach because of its camera as well. The main theme of the combat imo is efficiency. Whats the most efficient way to dispatch every enemy. Going into combat with this mindframe made me appreciate it so much more. Playing on hard difficulty really forcus you to think about each encounter. Yeah i can throw my axe from a safe distance over and over but thats slow, tedious, and not very on higher difficulties. I can go straight into an encounter mashing r1 or trying to be as cool as possible but thats an easy way to be hit from behind. Instead ill charge up axe r2, freeze an enemy in place for a few seconds to immobilize him, switch to blades to and pull his frozen body towards me. As hes frozen I position myself towards a cliff or wall then kick him to instantly pulverize him. I could use more examples but I'd be writing this all day. The point is the combat is more about defeating enemies in the most efficient way possible rather than looking cool or being a defensive shell the whole time. Its very unique and hopefullt they can refine these aspects further in its sequels.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice9

Most Souls fan will view Sekiro in a bubble. The souls bubble. And since it doesnt have many of the rpg mechanics that souls-fans have come to expect they immediately write it off. But Sekiro isnt an RPG nor is it trying to be.

Devil May Cry 59
Jun 30, 2020
The king of hack and slash is back. It makes the combat slightly more accessible without removing depth. But Neros devil arms not being switchable goes against the design of devil may cry. It feels restrictive when DmC is supposed to be unrestricted to give players as many options to pull off combos. V is also a nice gimmick at first but he just becomes incredibly boring after awhile. He just doesnt have the depth of Nero or Dante. Level design is also pretty boring. The way Nero gets his new arm and Devil Trigger was really lame and contrived. I know Dmc isnt focused on storytelling but having Nero get his arm back the way he did felt like a cop out so he could fight Vergil without it seeming like bull since without DT he'd be too weak. That being said DmcV has such incredible combat, especially with dante, that it makes up for its many shortcomings.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan5
Jun 9, 2020
This game is a massive step down from Until Dawn that it was surprising. Facial animation, dialog, voice acting was all far worse. All the characters are unlikeable. Its sole saving grace is its co-op since the story has a few neat gimmicks that make the experience worth it with friends. Without that gimmick however, I honestly would've given this game a 3 to a 4. Its not very good.

Until Dawn7
Jun 9, 2020
If you're a fan of campy 70's and 80's horror movies than youll like this game. I had a very good time basically acting as the director aandmaking choices based on what I wanted to have happen to each character. But i feel the games story wouldve been better had it focused on 1 main villain rather than have a pretty weak supernatural element alongside it. Overall it was a good game.

Detroit: Become Human6
Jun 9, 2020
This game is written with pretty but no nuance whatsoever. This game is an allegory for civil rights but it has such terrible execution behind it. and in many ways oversimplifies the struggle that actual civil rights leaders had to go through to overcome it. That being said though I still enjoyed my time because of how drastically the story changes depending on your choices made.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain7
Jun 9, 2020
MGSV mechanically is the best stealth game ever made. But theres more to gamepkay than just mechanics and the way a game feels. And in that sense this game fails at every other aspect of game design. The open world is unnecessary and empty. Rather than being a full open world it should've just been a linear game with more open level design. The story is incomplete, boring and unnecessary. Side content is all repetitive. And the second chapter is just lazy. Many missions sre just altered versions of the ones in chapter 1. If this game didnt have such amazing gameplay mechanics than this game would be a 5 at best.

Super Mario Odyssey7
Jun 7, 2020
Mario controls like a dream. So its too bad that the game rarely does much interesting with it. Mostly just a bunch of filler moons that are just boring to collect with the rewards being even lamer. Like a boss rush, or a world with a bunch of rehashed moons youve already done. You know what the reward for getting every moon in the game is? You get to fight bowser again. And he's hardly any different from the first time. This game is just disappointing and not all that great. If it wasnt for Cappy and Marios movement this game would be terrible. Luckily for us though Mario and Cappy feel so good to control.

Death Strandings best aspects are its visuals and how unique it is. It gets into a nice and enjoyable groove once you hit the second area of the game. But falls down again once you make your way to the snowy mountain. The story is a convoluted mess with cringeworthy dialougue at times.

Jun 7, 2020
Spider-Man is exactly what I expected it to be. It had a solid story, solid enough combat, amazing webslinging, repettive side missions, and tons of Spidermans best villains. It feels like it just does everything well enough to make everyone satisfied but never blown away.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered6
Jun 6, 2020
The Wonderful 101 is a fun and vibrant game that overstays its welcome. Its a game that really should've been 6-7 hours shorter than it was. This game is also far too lenient. Death basically means nothing in this game. If you die mid way in a boss battle, you respawn with full health but the boss's health is whereever it was when you last died. Seeing this basically gave me so sense of urgency the entire game. And since this game was far too long I just got really tired of it. The game can also be very inconsistent when it comes to weapon switching since you have to draw everything out. This games ending was amazing though.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt8
Jun 6, 2020
The Witcher 3 is a great game but I feel its greatness is overstated a bit. Yes it has some of the best quest writing in any game that has ever existed but it's combat is far too clunky and the game is way too glitchy to really be the greatest game ever like many people would have you believe. Because of the slow movement that geralt is forced into when he engages in combat it makes positioning Geralt to feel clunky and over rely on dodging and quen to get out of harms way. If the game wanted to look realistic it could've still had Geralt in his stance but allow some freedom of movement anyway. This would make positioning more important like in games like Bloodborne for example. This game also has very little depth. Yes you have tons of bombs and oils that help in defeating monsters but Geralt never gets any new moves throughout the entire game. At least none that really change your playstyle in a meaningful way. Every weapon in the game has the same move set even if the weapon is completely different like a hatchet. it gets stale after awhile. Nevertheless the quest writing is superb and this game has a lot of great characters and world-building. So that alone is worth the price.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma5
Jun 6, 2020
I really did not like this game. First off this game is easy but I can see why someone would think it's incredibly hard since this game tries its hardest to be completely unfair. Whether its enemies spawning directly on you when you re-spawn after death, being forced to fight whole waves of enemies before getting back to a boss you previously died at, enemies and bosses having little to no telegraph on many of their moves, and ghost fish. What makes this game easy though is basically every enemy can be killed in one combo. Especially once you get the izuna drop. Even boss fights have a very small health pool. But the game feels so poorly balanced like it was just make to annoy you at every turn. The combat feels great... when it works. Having no lock on is awful for this game since moves that require direction like the air slash attack just don't work sometimes. And even if you did connect with the move there's a good chance it'll clank off the enemy for no reason. Also, the last 3 chapters of this game are absolutely terrible. They introduce the Ghost Fish and they're easily the most poorly designed enemy I have ever faced in a game in my life. You need to mash your life away to get these dudes off and even then it seems like it's up to the luck for whether or not they get off of you before you waste all your healing items making sure you don't die. This game is very mediocre and has not stood the test of time. Definitely not among the best the hack and slash genre has to offer.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance7
Jun 6, 2020
Even though the combat is very linear and lacks depth. Its flashy and satisfying. This game is a contender for best set of bosses in any game ever, they are all that good. But this game comes with a lot of frustrating design. Stealth sections feel way too limiting, weapon switching is very clunky, having to wiggle the left stick every time you get stunned is incredibly annoying, and the art direction is bland and parrying can be annoying when there is multiple enemies in front of you at the same time since the system is based on direction.

Vanquish7
Jun 6, 2020
This game is fast paced and incredibly fun. But the art direction is so bland and lifeless. It never changes from the boring grey color palette. The main character and cast is extremely generic. None of the bosses were very memorable either. Except the last. The gunplay and movement are enough to make this a good way to spend 5-7 hours though. I highly recommend.

Bayonetta 27
Jun 6, 2020
This game is far too easy and has way to much of an over reliance on Umbran Climax. The enemy design in this game is annoying since many of them break out of combos whenever they want. Although I am glad that the QTE's aren't as annoying as the orignal game. Plus, this game is beautiful. But that's really all that's better about this game over the original.

Bayonetta8
Jun 6, 2020
Bayonetta is probably the best pure hack and slash game ever made. It's got the quick accessibility of God of War with the depth of a Devil May Cry. Great enemy design for the most part and some incredible boss battles. Held down only by some annoying missions, insta kill QTEs and a witch time not functioning on some enemies and their moves for pretty much no reason.

DOOM Eternal8
Jun 6, 2020
Doom Eternal is an improvement in many ways over 2016s. The gunplay and movement feel better adding to much more variety in the combat. Graphically and artistically its stunning but in terms of its sound design it somehow is worse than the original. Which is a shame because sound design does a lot for how satisfying it feels to get kills in a game. There is more platforming in the game this time around and I enjoyed it for the most part. it added some variety and made sure that the gunplay would never get stale. Also there are more bosses this time around but I don't think they're actually better than the ones in 2016. Overall, in my opinion this game is enough of an improvement in level design and variety, playstyle choices, gunplay and artistry for it to be a better game overall than the 2016 reboot.

Dooms gunplay is fantastic and so is it's music. But it ends up feeling very samey since most places look very similar with the same color pallet and its lack of boss fights until the very end. Jun 6, 2020
Why this game gets overwhelming praise is beyond me. Its a fine little game you can play for 2 hours and definitely has it's moments especially towards the end. it does a great job with environmental storytelling and is artistically beautiful but it doesn't do enough in my opinion to warrant anything higher than a 7. That's not to say it's bad though. It was a good time and I enjoyed it. I just wasn't particularly blown away by anything.

Bloodborne: Complete Edition9
Jun 6, 2020
Bloodborne is easily one of the best games ever made. It just oozes amazing throughout nearly every aspect of its design. Its art direction, music, boss battles, level design, lore etc etc etc. I would give it a perfect score but it has a few issues. Its worst is easily its stuttering. The bad frame pacing causes a constant hitching that never fully allows the game to feel as smooth as it should. Coupled with 30 fps and you have a less than ideal situation for an action game. Other smaller things like no respec, and only 1 blood rock can make the game feel a bit restrictive and grindy if you want to utilize more than 1 build. Also, the game could've done with some sort of time of day system. The game is basically always black all the time. A day/night cycle could do a lot for the games visuals and aesthetic. It's something we saw in an early build of the game and I was disappointed it didn't make the final cut. If the rumored PS5 remaster can fix these things while adding some new. Than I think this game would be basically perfect. Obviously, no game is without faults but I feel Bloodbornes would be so minor/subjective that "perfect" would be a legit assessment of this games quality.
