Overall, it’s been a joy to jump back into classic Halo. There’s a wonderful new sheen to this makeover but the gun game underneath is still addictive, brilliant shooter fun like it always was. And now that it is on Playstation, gamers who have always steadfastly stuck to that ecosystem will get a chance to enjoy a true great in the gaming catalogue in all its modernised glory.

Halo: Campaign Evolved has brought back a true classic in style, faithfully remaking and expanding one of the best shooters of all time. With bonus missions that feel like they’ve always been there, expertly slotting into the original Halo experience, Campaign Evolved presents an incredible package of old and new that’s never looked better. Welcome back, Chief.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a great opportunity to introduce impactful characters and stories to new enthusiasts and platforms, as well as deliver a fully updated experience for long-time fans. While in its best visual and technological version, and still bringing new features, the re-release suffers from dated and unimproved level design, as well as the missed opportunity for an online multiplayer experience that the title never had the chance to offer before.

The core, simple and colourful appeal of 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved – battling your way through chamber after chamber and canyon after canyon of ever-intensifying alien and mutant hordes with zero concern for XP, skill trees or equipment upgrades – brilliantly survives this stunning visual update. The drama and atmosphere of the original is hugely enhanced by its otherworldly textures and cinematic cut-scenes. It’s only let down by old-school transportation mechanics, so unwieldy that they drag you straight back to 2001.

It’s still an odd sensation to be playing a Halo game on a PlayStation console. If you had asked teenage Jordan–the one who spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours laughing alongside their friends in Halo 3 and Halo Reach online multiplayer–whether Halo would ever make its way to a Sony console, they’d have told you it was impossible. Yet, here we are. And 25 years later, Halo: Combat Evolved’s story is still really, really good.

Graphically pleasing and with enough touches to make it feel more than a graphical overhaul, this sometimes buggy (and stripped of its competitive mode) trip down memory lane is brief and predictable but still fun.

It is easy to be of two minds while playing Halo: Campaign Evolved. It is indeed a beautiful, often visually jaw-dropping update on a classic that still plays so, so well, and it benefits from all the gameplay and worldbuilding strengths from the 2001 shooter. On the other hand, as a package, this (second) remake struggles to justify its existence beyond the technical experimental that will, one day, inevitably lead to Halo 7.

Los gráficos han mejorado, cosa innecesaria. El motor gráfico hace que tengas mal rendimiento juegues donde juegues

The game is decent and had an amazing starting point. It looks great and I will give credit the library is good now. However, the gameplay additions are not great and in some ways take away from the experience versus the original. Not bad but not great either.

Missing multiplayer, bad changes to cinematics and voice acting. The storytelling in new missions is extremely bad. Graphics is great, except changes in precursor architecture. Bad image quality on PS5 Pro, with lots of noise and missed option to turn off film grain and chromatic aberration at the time I played (fixed later). Gameplay is good and fun, but added buch of invisible walls and dead zones, does not feel like the sandbox as original Halo did.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection has a better remaster of the first Halo game. It plays better and they haven't made random changes to both the character designs and cutscenes. You can also get it at a fraction of the cost. The new cutscenes look terrible with some of the animation decisions making no sense such as a ship flying directly under another ships engine. And yes they have added in a girl boss marine, who's incredibly unlikable.
