For about a day after I watched Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, I was dismissive of its Airplane (but not quite as good) comedic styling and the over-the-top acting, which felt like it was trying to wear me down. And yet by day two I was telling family and friends about some of the oddball moments of humour that made no logical sense but also made me laugh.

Despite some thin spots, “Gail Daughtry” is a comic highlight of the summer.

I laughed out loud at this movie more than any I've seen in quite a long time. It's so great to see a movie in theaters that is just out to make you laugh and entertain you instead of trying to deliver some sappy message. Zoey Deutch can do no wrong - she really just shines in this. I would say if you like big funny comedies, this is a home run.

David Wain, who directed and co-wrote this film, is best known for “The State,” “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Children’s Hospital.” For this comedy, he’s called upon a bunch of his previous cast mates to make fools of themselves, including Ken Marino (who co-wrote). It stars Zoey Deutch, who’s continuing to make a delightful impression, as she did in the recent “Voicemails for Isabel." She plays the sweet fiancée of her Kansas beau. When he takes advantage of the titular pass with Jennifer Aniston (playing herself), she takes off to LA to realize hers, Jon Hamm. Hamm is having a great time making fun of himself, along with his “Mad Men” buddy John Slattery, who really goes for it. There are a lot of amusing moments, but the comedy is often trying too hard. The numerous cameos add surprise coolness, but not much funny. Some of the humor is just goofy, some of it falls flat and some is genuinely amusing. This grab bag is fun just for the effort and numerous cameos. NOTE: Sit thru the credits for one final punchline sequence that’s set up early in the film.

The hit-to-miss ratio in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is a bit lower than Wain’s better films, and the indifferent digital photography leaves the impression that this is more a let’s-get-the-gang-together project than something more carefully planned. Yet the gang is still hilarious, and the additions to the Wain troupe are mostly a pleasure, from Deutch’s plucky sexual adventurer to contributors on the margins like Richard Kind and Fred Melamed.

It’s an unexpected commentary on filmmaking that layers metatextual zingers into its unbelievable rom-com intentions, somehow delivering what the title promises and more. In terms of mainstream comedies, we’re not in Kansas anymore—and that’s a win for Wain’s collective.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is basically a steady stream of gags and utter ridiculousness, and in that regard, it mostly throws softballs.

The flimsy narrative just about holds together but the jokes, while plentiful, often feel like rehashes of something the Zucker Brothers did better decades ago.

A disgusting reminder of the state Hollywood is currently in. Absolutely horrible.
