Elden Ring is simply a game that the player naturally adapts to their own style of play. Challenging at times, vicious at others, but mostly incredibly fun. The enjoyable pace makes the hours of play pass by like water, and each path opens up a few more, only to come together again after a fair amount of exploration before the next big reveal. [Issue#318]
Elden Ring serves as a testament to open world video game design. There is a true sense of accomplishment once that rock-hard enemy has been slain and, something that compels a player to relentlessly do it over and over again until they succeed is truly rewarding. The world is humongous and an epitome of how exploration should be encouraged, by intriguing players to see what is over the hill. Elden Ring is an unmissable, must-play, gaming experience with surprises galore.

Elden Ring's engaging combat, mythology and dynamite orchestral soundtrack goes a long way to overshadow an aggressive open world that punishes exploration from the beaten path. Fans of the Souls genre are in for a treat, while newcomers will need to persist to reap the benefits.

Do I even have to explain it? It's the soulsborne formula perfected with an amazing setting, a variety of different weapons and spells, a greater underlying story with unnecessarily engaging characters, undoubtedly one of my top 10 favorite games of all time.

Elden Ring is a superlative title, one of those works capable of becoming an event and becoming engraved in the collective imagination. It achieves this by remaining faithful to its formula and exporting its identity to the concept of the open world, achieving its own personal approach, resulting in a world that is visually stunning, and that works with overwhelming precision in terms of mechanics. An excellent videogame that also maintains the concreteness of its proposal.

The Loadout
Elden Ring packs its intricately crafted world - a world which should be used as a reference point for open-world design moving forward - with more impressive boss fights and secrets than you can shake a giant greatsword at. Although its punishing combat system may not be to everyone’s taste, it is an essential experience both for FromSoftware newcomers and seasoned veterans alike.

Elden Ring is a crowning achievement of over a decade of Miyazaki’s and FromSoftware’s work, and an amazing example of how to find a whole new level of fun in a well-known and somewhat worn-out formula. The open world turned out to be a perfect fit for the genre and you can still tell this masterpiece was created by the famous Japanese studio. I honestly haven’t been so excited about a game since the first Dark Souls.

Elden Ring feels like the natural evolution of a video game series that continues to reinvent itself after more than 13 years of its birth. FromSoftware is simply the best at what they do. While there are some technical issues and repetitive structures and creatures, Elden Ring is a cruelly wonderful piece of work and one of the best adventure games of recent years.

The years of waiting were worth it, Elden Ring is brilliant. It offers a huge amount of content, a beautiful world and addictive gameplay. But the series does start to feel a little bit stale.

Elden Ring needed to be fresh and bold, and it succeeds, putting you in charge of your own adventure. However the open world has some uneven terrain. [Issue#12, p.80]

Insane art direction, incredible sound design and phenomenal atmosphere. However, I hate how bosses and most enemies have crazy combos that never end and never give you a second to hit back. Also, I don't think a simple encounter in the wilds should feel as difficult as an endgame boss from earlier Souls games. I don't like the open-world structure. Most of your time is spent riding your horse and wasting time trying to find something to do that doesn't involve just killing everything you see. Quests are impossible to follow or complete without using the wiki. If you don't, you will either completely miss the next objective or randomly stumble on the NPC like 50 hours later and now they're dead. Another thing. In previous Souls games, items and gear were found naturally through exploring all nooks and crannies. There doesn't seem to be as much stuff in the environment to find this time around, I'm never rewarded for going out of my way to explore, unless you count rewards from completing dungeons... which, most of the time, end up useless to you because of stats requirements. This creates a frustrating gameplay loop where you work your butt off to clear a difficult boss only to get a reward you won't even use. This happens over and over again unless you use a wiki to plan out your build and route but that defeats the whole point of exploration. Finally, I think the game takes too long to beat. I prefer the previous Souls games that are more focused and intentional. Elden Ring feels bloated.

I have a love hate relationship with Elden Ring. It has some of the coolest weapons/builds in all Fromsoft history and NG+7 is actually doable and fun to play through, but that's where the positives end. Open world games are overwhelming nowadays for someone who likes to complete games. Waaaay too many copy pasted dungeons with copy pasted bosses. There's too many crannies to search and vast open areas with nothing of note. When you do find an item hidden out in the open world, 9 times out of 10 it's a leaf or a mushroom. You are not rewarded nearly enough for going down optional paths and that's a problem for a game as big as Elden Ring. The bosses are more aggressive than ever before and there needs to be a line. Bosses have these seemingly endless combos with lots of forward momentum. You'll get a VERY small window of opportunity to hit the boss like once or twice, then it's back to these ridiculously long combos. You barely get to attack, it's just roll city and if you get caught, a third or more of your HP is gone. And my last complaint is that this game is waaaaay too long for a souls game. Part of the fun of these games is that the run time is long enough to be significant but short enough to where you want to go through it again with a new weapon/build. In Elden Ring I was exhausted by the time the credits rolled and I didn't want to try out any cool new builds. Such a shame.

Tried getting into Elden Ring a few times, but it just doesn’t click for me. Combat feels slow and clunky, dodging isn’t responsive, and enemy animations are hard to read. Coming from Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen, and Wuchang, this felt like a downgrade in terms of gameplay feel and polish. The world looks big but felt empty and aimless early on. I understand why people love it, but it’s not for me — at least not yet. Might try again later and update my thoughts if it clicks.
