The Last of Us Remastered

One of the best titles of the previous generation is now available in all the next-gen glory and also with all the DLCs. Take it or leave it. [Issue#245]

While I’d rather not see a sequel, you should know that this Remastered version basically puts a T-ball stand in Sony’s living room where they’ve now started selling bats. Depending on the level of broken the company's biggest Bravia display could become given that scenario, I'd say the brand is worth a lot of money at the moment.

Even if you’ve played The Last of Us, owning one of the best games of the last ten years in all its 1080p glory is worth the price of admission.

The Last of Us is truly the game of a generation, and the Remastered edition brings the harrowing adventure to a whole new generation with expert style.

The Last of Us remains a masterpiece. And on PS4 you get the complete story experience on one disc.

After 13 months The Last of Us is still impressive. This Remastered edition is the perfect deal for those who have never played Naughty Dog's game, but it doesn't offer anything more to PS3 fans.

Except for the Left Behind DLC, none of the other additions actually add to the experience. The game is just as good as it always has been, but with improved graphics being the only real selling point, the package is not enough for a second buy.

It is perhaps the best opening in history. The chaos unfolding outside—the explosions, the screams, and the panic of people gathering in a desperate bid to escape—captivated me with an incredible set-piece sequence. That is exactly the kind of panic I would feel in an apocalyptic scenario, in a world teeming with the infected. Controlling Joel amidst that chaos made even me feel tense. The incredible pacing established right at the start, combined with tension that mounts by the second, could make this game a legend in the industry; however, the relationship development—specifically the sudden leap that occurs just three or four hours into the journey with Ellie—doesn't quite work. While the game's overall pacing is solid, these somewhat unrealistic developments mean the pacing and evolution of the relationships aren't handled quite as well. I didn't find the story in *The Last of Us* to be extraordinary; it’s a standard apocalyptic scenario. Nor did I find the storytelling particularly immersive; it’s a classic tale of main characters setting out on an adventure or journey. What truly impressed me about the game were the combat encounters—which never felt tedious despite the linear structure—the unique, thought-provoking nature of the fights, the AI, the music, the atmosphere, and the Winter chapter.

This game has a pretty nice story and is generally very well made. What bothers me though is it's repetetive and not engaging gameplay that got me bored. Long sequences of killing soldiers to get to the roof, stealth to some clickers, then a little story and back to Square one. Maybe I am a little harsh because I was expecting so much more, but I wasn't even able to get to the end. Way better as a movie material than a game (which they eventually did with HBO series anyway)

My rating system: Gameplay: 50% Graphics: 30% Story: 20% Result: Gameplay: 0/50%. This is not even a real videogame - it wants to be a movie. Many cutscenes, forced slow walking and talking. Extremely linear corridor walking simulator. "Gameplay" itself is throwing bricks and bottles at enemies, and then engage in piss poor stealth or combat. Controls are very clunky and heavy, there's not even a dodge button! Melee is telegraphed, too slow and animations can't be cancelled. Shooting aiming is poor, reloading takes seemingly forever, and you're often short on bullets. The enemy AI is very stupid which breaks immersion. Gameplay was obviously an afterthought. The same developer made Uncharted 4 so they know how to make gameplay, they just didn't think TLOU needs it. Graphics: 30/30%. It looks almost photorealistic, lip sync is good, motion capture is good, voice acting is good. But it has to be, since this is a wannabe movie. Story: 10/20%. Cliché. Very predictable. Somewhat intriguing but nothing extraordinary. By how much movie-games rely on a story, I honestly expected more. If you do want to see the story - just watch on YouTube.
