It's much better then the first Purge movie. It has better action, better characters and better overall feeling. It focuses on more then just one house this time so that's also nice. The characters are overall more likeable, with the exception of one who is annoying and whiny. The action scenes are much better in this movie, there also also more of them so that's also a plus. It's more fun to watch then its predecessor, and something I would watch again.

If you were given the concept of anything is legal for a night then this is the film that you would make. In that regard it is less original than the first one and generally predictable. Lots of killing and action, sexual violence, much less moral questioning, people fighting the system they disagree with. For mindless action it's good but much more forgettable than the first film. I can only imagine the sequels go further with the revolution against the purge. I also think the prequel could be more interesting than this film whilst the idea is fresh in the fictional world. Well made and entertaining but not as engaging as the previous one.

A decent thriller, nicely shot. Has a few twists and turns, uses the concept well.

Better Than The First
With a good amount of tension and suspense, Anarchy is an improvement over it's mediocre predecessor.

Another purge another easy plot prediction. The only thing that surprised me was when that boyfriend got shot by the guys in the tuxedos. Other than that this movie was appalling. ALSO the daughters acting was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. Not only she couldn't act, she also had the worst lines in the movie. Every time she spoke I wanted to reach through the screen and punch her in the face to stop talking. I have never seen such bad acting. This movie was white-washed just like the first one and wasn't good enough. Why do all the rich people gotta do the killing lol its unnecessary. Embarrassing.

"Anarchy" is a definite improvement over the original. While the first was a very self-contained thriller that offers a look at some flaws that exist in the society today, Anarchy builds on the original while expanding on themes such that are very anti-capitalist such as elitism and classism. The acting is strong, Frank Grillo is a good lead. On the more negative side, the violence and some of the more intense scenes are of course a little bit more over-the-top.

There's a good movie in here somewhere, which I suppose is a bit of a step up for this notorious horror franchise. As someone with limited to no involvement in the antics of "The Purge" (I'd only seen "The First Purge" prior to now and it was not very good at all) I can't say I know the property's pitfalls and heights backwards to front. But, from what I've heard, the fact that there's any successes at all in this film is a testament to its supremacy as the best of the batch. Frank Grillo is the real anchor here. The guy is the living embodiment of the cool factor and seeing him go to town on baddies is worth the price of admission alone. It's a messy movie, with some ham-fisted political soapboxing and a couple moments of out-of-place buffoonery, but it's a fun watch, to be sure.

This sequel takes a step in the right direction with yet another solid cast, expanded lore, and a slightly improved but still flawed story. The pacing is inconsistent with it either feeling too slow or too quick but all in all, It was certainly a better overall experience when compared to the first film but it is far from a genuinely good movie.

It has stronger characters, it's more intense, it feels more real, and "The Purge: Anarchy" actually improves on its predecessor.

The movie is based on a somewhat original idea. I also liked that it's a critique to world ruled by money. However, besides the setting, there's not much good to this movie. The acting was okay but the characters had no depth, the story was predictable and the more the movie progressed, the more boring it got. It wasn't thrilling and it wasn't horrific either. It just got boring.

Anarchy is mostly on par with the first Purge film, but in a strange way. Some things are done worse, and somethings are improved on. We actually get to see the real Purge on the streets in this movie, which is a breath of fresh air. It's not the best sequel, but it's not the worst one either.

This is a fan favorite for many but I see so many issues in this movie that it makes my stomach turn. It's story is bleek. Overall I just hate this installment and I have many reasons for hating it.

This movie improves upon the original by exploring its idea way more. It has more action, more tension, and more excitement. It also features a kick ass performance from Frank Grillo who actually is a little bit developed unlike the rest of the cast.

A total mess of a film. It clearly tries to expand on the bigger picture that we missed out on last time - but the fact is that past the initial frightening idea, The Purge: Anarchy is an exercise in mindless bloodshed (as is the eponymous Purge itself), and lacks emotional depth or a coherent story.

"The Purge: Anarchy" sequel to the saga "The Purge" and a completely new story, and if the same tradition of night killings in a single night, in 12 hours without stop.

When I saw the trailer for the first Purge movie, I thought it was a wildly innovative idea and I absolutely loved it! I was so excited to see the film, unfortunately it amounted to little more than a slasher movie. The story had all the potential in the world, but they really didn't go into it, they just wanted to show off the violence and hatred people had towards one another. I was hoping they would correct this in the sequel and boy did they ever! Anarchy isn't about some family hunkered down in their home, fighting off attackers. In the second installment of the Purge, we learn a lot more about it. The pro and anti-purge factions that exist, the professional companies that make a fortune off that one night, the way the rich purge, and the main story which centers around what happens on the streets when two families are trapped outside on purge night. Two families are easy pickings until they find Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), a man on a mission that he can only complete on Purge night. Barnes however is a man of conscience and won't complete his mission until he begrudgingly gets the families to safety, which means a wild trek through the city. The Purge: Anarchy is a wild ride through a city of ordinary people turned into killers, with home made weapons, booby-traps, and pure anarchy, just as the title promises. If you're looking for action and violence, there are a million places to turn, that's not what the appeal of this movie is. It's the idea, that crime virtually is nonexistent, except for this one night, where society turns on each other. Where almost everyone's craziest fantasy becomes reality and just how some people react. What will each character turn into when they are allowed to do whatever they want? How does society feel about this law and is the benefit worth the cost? This story has just so many directions it can go in, that why I'm not surprised to hear they're working on a fourth film. The Purge series may just be a series of action/slasher films, but this one idea puts a whole new spin on them and makes you see things through a whole different set of eyes and I for one think it's ingenious.

The Purge: Anarchy is better then the first movie that's not saying much. The first 20 minutes before the purge I thought was great but then it starts to be the first movie again but with it outside.

For me this movie was between mixed and positive - 6.5 basically. The action part and suspense and all that was really good and the movie was exciting to watch throughout, plus this one was better than the first one, but anyway, some of the ideas or what happenned there at some parts felt so dumb or so unrealistic that it made it harder to watch it without laughing etc at some moments. Anyway, if you watched first one and thought it was ok, then you will like this one more and will actually enjoy it, if you hated the first one, then these Purge series are not for you. If you were not hating or liking first movie, then give this one a chance so that you know where you stand.

The Purge:Anarchy builds on the original, bringing in more moral and political themes, which suit the setting perfectly. While not perfect by any means; sometimes the plot was a little dull and the action repetitive, it was certainly an improvement from the original and showed us the purge from the eyes of a different demographic

It's a very absurd movie, but in that respect it's no different than everyone's beloved super hero action porn. Definitely a lot more fleshed out than the first. I was able to get quite attached to the characters and though the story was a bit slow at times the second half really gets going. It has a very mad max feel as if for 12 hours the country falls into an apocalypse. In the end though if you can't role with the silly premise than it won't be enjoyable and there's quite a bit of brutality to it so it's only going to appeal to a niche audience. (The Fight Club kind of audience).

Summary: The Purge: Anarchy has some nice shots, a creepy atmosphere and Frank Grillo's dynamic performance; also, James DeMonaco is becoming in a better director. Sadly, it is still not good enough. 60/100 [C+] A couple are driving home when their car breaks down just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles. The movie started very well, but some of the characters were a bit annoying and unlikable such as Shane (Zach Gilford), he was so annoying. There was a lack of connection between the audience and Shane. Also, there was another crappy character called Liz (Kiele Sanchez), she is a good actress, but her character was uninteresting. Nobody cared about her story and she is not engaging enough. Then, we have Frank Grillo as Sergeant, he is the star of the film, his performance was great. Carmen Ejogo performs Eva Sanchez. Ejogo gave a reliable performance and you care about her character. The young actress Zoë Soul performs Cali, her character was smart, strong and sympathetic. The script, camera work and direction are way better in comparison to its predecessor. James DeMonaco is becoming in a better director. The Purge: Anarchy was quite ambitious, but it is still not good enough. The last act was messy and confusing. Some scenes in the final act did not make any sense, everything felt surreal and awkward. Frank Grillo enhanced the film at times, but the movie still lacked a payoff. Also, it is a thriller, so I do not know why they classified this as a horror film. Anarchy is smarter and fresher than its predecessor; but it is still not recommendable enough. [C+]

Instead of just being exactly what it is (a normal horror/slasher film), this movie decided to had small amount of very heavy handed political messaging; just like the first one. Even if you take that away, this movie was extremely predictable. I was literally saying what is going to happen next right before it should have happened as if the writers had a 'how to make a slasher movie' handbook they felt they had to stick to. I'm sure they will make another one, because they definitely have enough to go off of to continue this seemingly forever in the way Saw did.

Don't know why this is getting mixed reviews. I thought it was great. A brilliant thriller. Pretty tense, better than the first IMO. It's sort of like what Aliens was to Alien. The same core experience, just on a larger, more epic level. I really liked how the movie was able to tell all of these different stories, and make you care for all the main characters involved. If you liked the first movie, or even felt a bit "meh" about it then I'd still recommend that you watch this.

Having loved the first movie, despite it being rather stupid, I was really looking forward to the sequel when it came out summer of last year. It took me a year to finally get around to this, but I'm glad I did. The Purge: Anarchy is an action horror film and a sequel to 2013's The Purge. Both films take place in the near future where the US government sanctions an annual 12-hour period where all emergency services are suspended and all crime, including murder, is legal. While the premise itself is completely unrealistic and stupid, it is extremely interesting and original. The first Purge takes place in 2022 and only took place within one house that was being invaded by some purgers. It was a major letdown for some, but it was incredibly entertaining for me. The sequel takes place a year later and is really the Purge movie everyone had hoped for. It tells of five people who are simply trying to survive the night on the streets of LA during the Purge. The Purge: Anarchy rights most of the wrongs of the original Purge and doesn't mask itself by being a home invasion thriller or revenge flick. Anarchy is definitely its own unique movie. It does introduce some new ideas to the Purge story. It shows that not everyone purges just because they want to; some do it for revenge and some do it just to stay alive. The film also shows what the richest people would do. They hold auctions where poor people are auctioned off to upper-class purgers, and the scene showing this is probably the most interesting scene in the movie. Not only does The Purge: Anarchy show off some well-executed ideas, it's also an incredibly thrilling and entertaining movie from start to finish. What made this movie so fun to watch was that each character had their own unique struggles and reasons for being out in the Purge, and there was some great acting from the entire cast to make them even more interesting and real. The Purge: Anarchy proves a significant step up from the original film, and it's the perfect summer thriller film that I would recommend to almost anyone.

One year after the events of The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy begins. The movie follows three groups of individuals: a separating couple(Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez), a mother and daughter(Carmen Ejogo and Zoe Soul), and a heart-stricken father(Frank Grillo). Grillo is ready to purge and is out for vengeance when he stumbles across the other four characters needing rescue. He has to hold off on his mission to save this group of unfortunate people. They aren’t only trying to survive the civilians purging, but another group is purging as well. The group of five is forced to trust one another on a night when no one can be trusted. The Purge: Anarchy is the sequel to the harshly criticized original, The Purge. The original had a great premise and unique story, but fell short with the backstory and the ending. The Purge: Anarchy had to step it up so it wouldn’t fall in the same footsteps as it’s previous installment, but it once again just wasn’t enough to set it apart from any other thriller. Some of the characters were amazing, Sergeant(Frank Grillo) and Cali(Zoe Soul) had a great connection throughout the entire movie. On the other hand, every other character seemed like fill ins. Other bodies to be brutally killed without the slightest of care. “Anarchy” did a better job of telling the backstory than the original, but it felt forced through the unknown group opposing the NFFA led by Carmelo(Michael Williams). The ending was rushed, but satisfying for the characters that survived. There were great action sequences throughout, especially with Frank Grillo at the helm. The movie’s tone was felt the entire way, and the moral of the story was accurately portrayed at the end. This movie was fun to watch and very entertaining, but it felt like it needed more. The characters were predictable and uncared for, except for Sergeant(Frank Grillo). The story fell backseat to the action sequences, even though the last shootout was pretty impressive. A greater budget, but only a slight improvement over the original.

Why was this lousy, ultra low budget, vile, sadistic, formulaic, boring as hell little thriller released in 2:35 widescreen? Because the producers and distributors are jackasses that either don't know what they're doing or erroneously think that with 16x9 TV having taken over, the cinema screen needs to go wider across the board? Or is it because the jackass filmmakers delusionally think they are David Lean? It's not even photographed well, particularly a scene with a flashlight in a tunnel where the blue flares hitting the lens look so out of place as to be animated in or something? Fire that color grader! And director and DP take yourself back to film school and get an education where you learn what is acceptable and what is just your childish indulgences! The fact is a junky little movie like this lives on video after a short life in theaters, and all that letterbox does is lose screen real estate for the flick on today's TV's. The desired wide effect does nothing to make the movie any bigger or more legitimate. It's not fooling anybody. If epic modern movies like "Avatar" or "Noah" play huge in 1:85 flat, then why in hell would this genre garbage warrant being wide?

This movie looks good and it's well acted, but the narrative is all over the place and the convoluted direction certainly doesn't help make it make any sense. The "Purge" movies just aren't that good, but as long as people keep going to see them, then we're just going to be stuck with them and probably annually just like the purge in the movies. Ugh...

Excellent filmmaking, great plot, fast pacing, likeable characters, and amazing action. Everything I wanted out of the first Purge film. The casting is superb and the way all of the characters storylines fall together is phenomenal. One of my favorite films of 2014. Bravo James Demonaco!

A squeal that doesn't even try. Remember last year with the first Purge movie and I really didn't like it, but this movie is nothing different. This movie is still filled with stupid characters that make stupid choices throw out the film. They is this one scene in this movie where these homeless people are hiding underground trying to get away from this horrible event and they are hiding in complete darkness and nobody can't see them. but these people with flamethrowers come underground chasing are main characters not seeing the homeless people, and then the homeless people got up from there hiding places, and started running in past them for no reason at all. Overall this movie is nothing much as a violent train wreck.

The Purge Anarchy captures the idea behind the Purge so much better than the first movie, which i would say is mediocre at best. Instead of keeping the film contained to one house like the first one did, it took us to the streets during purge night following 5 characters. Although I do have some problems with this movie I would say it is a massive improvement over the first one. The biggest problem I have with the movie is the pacing of action and the acting at times, which can be wooden and cringe worthy in places, the writing could have been better but it isn't horrible although I do think the writer completely missed the mark on the 'horror' genre here jump scares do not make a horror movie. in summery i would say if you have thought about watching The Purge Anarchy then it is a good action movie with some jump scares thrown in the mix.

So much better than the first! But really, that's not saying a lot... The action and development in this squeal really is quite good. I was expecting almost nothing from this since the first movie was so predictable and bad. For having a cast of no names it really was an impressive movie. If I had to compare this to anything it would be that this movie is what '28 Weeks Later' was to '28 Days Later'. Much more action, several more characters, and best of all it wasn't completely predictable. A good rental for action fans and gore hounds.

"The Purge: Anarchy" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ... The Good: Frank Grillo carries the film and is the only character worth watching. His story is actually somewhat interesting and he's a complete badass. Aside from him, there are a few poignant scenes that were well done and provided solid social commentary. The decision to show what happens during the yearly Purge at the street level, was a good idea. The ending was decent enough though, and it was clearly a better film than the first. The Bad: While showing the Purge in the streets as opposed to the home invasion of the first film was a good idea, it degenerates into pretty standard fare pretty quickly. Aside from the few aforementioned scenes, there is nothing that we haven't already seen several times before in better films. With the exception of Grillo's character, I didn't care about anyone else as they were one-dimensional and uninteresting. It really didn't matter to me who lived and who died. Lastly, as our group of survivors went from one safe place to another, strange and outlandish things seemed to always happen. This got old pretty early.
