The Disaster Artist works on three distinct levels. It works as a celebration of the worst film ever made, it works as a profound character study that examines toxic personal traits, and it also works as a reflection on dreams and entitlement. The first level is the most obvious. The film shows the production and pre-production of one of the worst movies in history: The Room (a movie so bad that it developed a cult following). In the Disaster Artist, we meet Tommy Wiseau, the guy who would go on to direct The Room, and during the film, we will see how his friendship with budding actor Greg Sestero led to the development of The Room. We will also see how his jealousy and antics made The Room what it is: the best worst movie ever. We will be delighted with recreations of the horrible dialogues, recreations of the horrible acting, and recreations of the horrible plot (as well as being treated to a behind-the-scenes that shows how it all became so bad). And, fans of The Room will enjoy every second of it. Hiding behind the surface of a seemingly inconspicuous comedy is a deep character study that shows a lot of pathos. Tommy Wiseau is a mystery (we never discover his age, where he comes from, or his background), but, despite this, we discover a lot about him. Through the deep connection and subsequent dependency that he develops over the film with Greg, we can deduce that he has been lonely for a long time and probably has never had a real friend. When Greg finds a girlfriend we can see how Tommy's dependency turns into jealousy and then into rage (there's also a different reading of the film that suggests that Tommy was in love with Greg, but him being afraid of losing his friend is just as possible). Tommy´s big dream is to be an actor, but not just an actor, he wants to become a real Hollywood star in the vein of James Dean. Just after his move to LA, we are treated to a scene that shows us how annoyed he gets when a professor suggests that because of his physical characteristics, he would fit better in the role of a villain. The teacher meant well, but he got mad because he felt entitled to the role of the hero. We can also see his entitlement towards Greg and towards the movie. He feels that Greg should do whatever he thinks because he lives under his roof and he thinks of The Room as his and Greg’s movie (despite it being a collaborative **** in all, The Room is a really funny film that also works as a character study and explores themes like loneliness, dependence, entitlement, power, and dreams, and because of that, it works.

James Franco takes a swing at the story behind The Room, a film so hopelessly inept it's developed a tenured, loyal cult following. This take has moments, but often seems to merely skim (if not altogether miss) what makes the subject so fascinating. Maybe I'd have better appreciated it if I hadn't read Greg Sestero's tell-all of the same name, which delves much deeper into the dysfunctional production. By comparison, this feels like a watery synopsis that, puzzlingly, leaves out some of the most interesting backstage dishes. It can't have been in the pursuit of a smoother narrative or a more clear-cut relationship between the two leads, because those blessings never arrive. Franco both directs and stars as Tommy Wiseau, the confusingly secretive social outcast at the center of it all, but given the buzz and awards surrounding his performance I was left wondering if I'd missed something. The famous accent doesn't feel quite right, often played with a wink and a grin that belies a soft undercurrent of derision, and his wardrobe may as well have come from a seasonal Halloween shop. Franco's role comes off like an awkward cosplay rather than a serious performance, a gag act that went too far, and the surrounding film isn't fiery, appealing or even interesting enough to compensate. Good for a few laughs at best, maybe more for viewers less familiar with the subject, but as a one-man show it falls flat.

Obviously the book is better cause it goes into more detail, but this movie is still good. I love The Room and the book was the first book I ever sat down and read voluntarily

A respectable attempt by James Franco, who's portrayal of Tommy Wiseau is the most interesting thing about this biopic. Unfortunately, there isn't much more to learn here about Wiseau as a person, or even The Room in general, that you wouldn't get by just watching The Room.

It was ok, I don't see it being that crazily good or something, plus most of it is them just reenacting scenes from The Room, but it was ok.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… The dream of your own movie Abstract The Disaster Artist is not only the making of the cult film The Room, approached as a fun comedy-tribute that does not fall into a ruthless parody but rather constitutes a lucid reflection on what it means to shoot a movie, the sometimes despotic power of producers and directors and the distance that mediates between what is filmed and the final product through montage, between the look and intentions of the author and the public's perception of a work. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………. Review The Disaster Artist recreates the making of of the cult film The Room, which was classified as the best worst film of all time, given the inadvertent comic effect it produced and produces on the public. The protagonists are Tommy Wiseau (James Franco), a frustrated and eccentric millionaire actor who upon meeting the young aspiring actor Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) decides to produce and direct his own film with him and Greg as protagonists. Franco makes an interesting approach to the relationship between the two, which does not avoid ambiguity and to which he adds an extra quota as both protagonists are brothers in real life. Although it is a very funny comedy, it is not a satire or a destructive parody, but rather constitutes a frank tribute to the original film and its director, as is the film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga regarding the famous festival. But The Disaster Artist also allows that chronicle of a filming to become a lucid reflection on what it means to film a film, the sometimes despotic power of producers and directors and the distance that mediates between what is filmed and the final product through of montage, between the look and intentions of the author and the public's perception of a work. James Franco composes a great role (beyond good and evil) as well as Dave sets the right tone for his hopeful and naive character. The cast includes an impressive gallery of stars, some with appearances that are almost cameo.

I went into The Disaster Artist as someone who had seen bits and pieces of The Room, and had just watched it before my first viewing. When watching The Disaster Artist, I was blown away with how accurate the acting seemed, found the insight into the background of the film to be interesting, and was surprised with how many famous actors were in this. I think that any person who enjoys The Room should do themselves a favor and watch this, aside from being enjoyable, it's interestingly insightful. I enjoyed it just as much on my second view as my first.

I enjoyed this movie quite a bit and it as well being one of those movie's which happend behind the making of The Room and how it became a movie. It's honestly quite funny and mental what happens throughout this movie and how Tommy Wiseau wanted this movie to be but it's still a great movie. Also, the acting choices are really good especially James Franco as Tommy Wiseau he was excellent from start to finish, I started to think when I was watching this Tommy Wiseau was actually playing himself but yeah, James Franco and the rest of the cast did a great job. Overall, it's a great movie which shows us what the legend Tommy Wiseau had to go through to get the movie The Room how he wanted it to be and it's got some hilarious scenes throughout, it's honestly worth the watch.

An incredibly flawed journey into a huge creative undertaking that came off as earnest. Disaster Artist reiterates a fact of life that bears repeating, perhaps because it is so feared by humanity, that the path to success is paved with failure and that creative visions take courage. Wiseau isn't perfect by any means, but his transgressions are relatable, amplified by their rawness, whether we want to admit it to ourselves or not. This was a good picture with a lot of vision and soul.

It's a very entertaining retelling of a crazy cult flick, but Dave Franco hurts to watch. Everything, his demeanor, acting, facial expressions, it's all so incredibly fake. It seems like he's only on board because his older brother landed lead. Who casts two brothers in these roles anyway?

The Disaster Artist is an enthralling tale about the making of the worst best film ever made, the Room. At its core this film is about friendship. Its a heartfelt tale of two struggling actors who follow their dreams by making their own movie. This story is told brilliantly through James Franco's superb directing and his amazing portrayal of the infamous Tommy Wiseau. James Franco obviously studied this man inside and out due to the fact that he is able to not only do a very good impression of his voice but he is also able to capture the many nuances and body movements of the man. Dave Franco plays Tommy's best friend Greg Sestero in the film. In my opinion Dave Franco is the standout performance in the film as he is able to capture the character's shyness and insecurity but also is able to unleash the character's in rage and reluctancy throughout the film. By far the most compelling aspects of the film is the relationship between Tommy and Greg. The film takes us through the character's highs and lows and their never ending struggle to achieve their dreams. My one criticism of the film film is that it has a very rushed 3rd act. At the beginning of the 3rd act Tommy and Greg's struggles reach a boiling point and their relationship suffers because of it. Many months pass and we skip past potential character drama and relationship struggle that could possibly be portrayed. Thankfully the film doesn't suffer too much because of it as the ending of the film is quite inspiring and worth the wait. Overall the Disaster Artist is a heartfelt story of two best friends pursuing their dreams no matter the cost. it is a film I strongly recommend.

The Disaster Artist is far from being a disaster... and far from being as bad as The Room. Its based on the crazy true story of how Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero made the greatest worst movie ever made. James Franco directs this movie and acts as Tommy Wiseau perfectly, which is the highlight of the entire movie. His performance and many memorable quotes make this movie one of the funniest and most entertaining movies I've ever seen. The rest of the performances from the other actors are great as well and only compliment James' performance even more. Being an aspiring filmmaker myself, this movie is really inspirational as it tells such a great and heartfelt story about following your dreams and never giving up. This movie is a must see for everyone interested in the film industry, and even anyone who has a different passion or dream they want to pursue.

The Disaster Artist is one of the most memorable comedies in years. Fans and those familiar with the room will find an enjoyable and rather informing tale of ultimate failure. Best of all, the disaster artist has lines that are arguably just as memeable as the original film.

This movie is a very accurate recreation of the original. It feels like a behind the scenes from the 2nd camera movie. It also gives a chilling unseen vibe of the movie. The actors where outstanding in their roles, the Franco brothers outdid themselves on this movie. The directing was great and captured every single intense situation and delivered the immersion as expected. The writing was not very creative but it shed some light as I said before to the parts which where not seen before. Although the plot was a bit lacking to go on and at times Tommy's behavior was terribly awkward most of the time, which made the pacing a little bit of an issue, because at times it felt like a chore watching these scenes over and over, but they get away with the fact the this was a biography movie, and a recreation of Tommy character. The visuals where great but the lack of ambiance sound effects made it more raw. The conclusion was there with the original story as well, which made it a recycle for most of the viewers. Overall it's a good movie that recreates Tommy Wiseu's character rather well, but delivered to raw in my opinion, and could have been made couple of polished changes to the whole "giving over the tension" aspect.

It's humorous, it's charming, it's creative. Brilliantly directed and passionately acted by James Franco and the rest of the great ensemble cast, there is so much to love about "The Disaster Artist".

An entertaining-enough look at the process of creating "the worst movie ever made." However, Wiseau's involvement meant pulling some punches, and the film lacks the fearless honesty that could have elevated it to greatness.

Made by James Franco and involving all of his usual Seth Rogen related cohorts, I was expecting The Disaster Artist to be a straight up mockery of The Room and it's creator. As it turns out, apparently Franco stumbled upon the real heart of the story while digging through all the behind-the-scenes information on the best worst movie ever made and instead chose to make his film about the unlikely friendship that made it all happen in the first place. On top of directing and producing, Franco even stars as ol' Tommy Wiseau himself. His accent is actually really good and he expertly manages to capture so many of Wiseau's distinctive quirks. The laugh in particular is spot-on. He never plays it like he's making fun of the guy. Instead choosing to let Wiseau's humanity be the main focus of his embodiment. The Disaster Artist never derides The Room for laughs. It's comedy comes from knowing winks like Franco's intentional overplaying of the "NAAHT" in one of the source material's most memorable lines, as well as the natural reactions one would have when being presented with Wiseau's unorthodox behavior and approach to filmmaking. It's all much more heartfelt than one might expect. The casting of Dave Franco as Greg Sestero was a good choice. On top of just looking more like a brother to Greg than he ever did to James, Dave's role as the second leading man lends more credibility to the friendship at the movie's core by allowing the Franco's to play off of their natural connection as brothers. It's the first time I've ever come close to liking little Not James. The Disaster Artist is the best way to experience The Room. You get to witness a lot of it's most memorably, wonderfully terrible moments without the shame of having actually watched it. All of the joy, none of the regret. Certain gags might not have the same effect, but they'll still prove to be plenty hilarious. Plus it stands on it's own as a surprisingly sweet and sincere film with a magnetic central performance from James Franco. So you don't need to have seen it's inspiration to enjoy what this movie has to offer. 9.7/10

James Franco's spot on performance of writer, director and producer Tommy Wiseau was one of few aspects of the film that were really keeping me engaged and motivated to stay with the story. Yes, the side by side comparison scenes from The Room were well done and fun to watch, but still felt like it was lacking in style and substance (and originality). The whole copy and paste just wasn't doing it for me. I might as well should just be watching The Room instead. At times it felt the film was relying too much on the funny moments from The Room that everyone was familiar with to really get a reaction out of the audience. They didn't have their own humor. If I wasn't already familiar with the source material I probably wouldn't have spent the time watching this movie. I would recommend this movie if you're already familiar with The Room, but if not, just watch The Room. What do I know, this is just my opinion.

It's clearly a labor of love from major Hollywood names that were big fans of the original film, but it's not altogether as charming, quirky, absurdist, or part of the so-bad-it's-good magic that allows the original film to continue enthralling audiences today.

An outsider watching this movie will probably see a normal dude hanging out with a disabled person and somehow making a movie. However, The Disaster Artist is aimed for the fans of The Room and Tommy Wiseau. The film shows how Tommy works and does things, although nobody really knows that, and most importantly, the film shows "what could have been"-scenes which make every Tommy Wiseau fan feel sympathy for him. This is a great tribute to Tommy. I think James Franco grasped what kind of a person Tommy Wiseau is and he found a great medium to portrait that. Every fan of The Room, Tommy and the book by Greg is going to love this movie.

The Disaster Artist is a funny movie and a personal triumph for Tommy Wiseau. The Disaster Artist is an adaptation of the eponymous book written by Tommy Wiseau's friend and The Room co-star Greg Sestero, where he describes his friendship with Wiseau and the background circumstances while making the cult hit The Room. James Franco takes up the seemingly impossible task of impersonating Tommy Wiseau and somehow he pulls it off. Franco successfully copied Wiseau's speech, expressions and mannerisms to the most minute detail, and I thought no-one would ever be able to do that. His younger brother Dave Franco portrays Greg Sestero. This movie also focuses on the human side of Wiseau and Sestero, not just their public personas. The scene in the end, where Wiseau is devastated by his film's apparent failure at its premiere and Sestero consoles him, is really great. There is plenty to enjoy for fans of The Room. The behind the scenes developments are shown during the filming of The Room, and there are also perfect remakes of some classic The Room scenes. But if you haven't already seen The Room, you won't appreciate The Disaster Artist at all. It's a fan-service movie above all else, and also a movie for James Franco to make a name for himself with an unbelievable performance. Franco deserved to get an Academy Award for his successful portrayal of a unique person like Tommy Wiseau, but he wasn't even nominated for some reason. All in all, The Disaster Artist is made for The Room fans. If you haven't seen The Room go watch it first, and then proceed to The Disaster Artist.

The disaster artist is about the making of the cult movie "The Room", so you should see that first instead to appreciate "The Disaster Artist" better. What's good about this film? James Franco's acting is superb in imitating Tommy Wiseau, it's quite funny if you liked the first movie and has nice insights on our favorite trash movie. It's not groundbreaking though and will not make you laugh as hard as the real film. Still worth watching if you are a fan of "The Room".

A movie about a rich guy who fancies himself an actor but who has no talent and no one will hire him. So he produces, directs, and stars in his own movie. Why was this movie made? Is it that important or compelling a story to be made on film? No on all counts.

It's a nice tribute to "The Room" and Tommy Wiseau. While the Room was a very very bad movie, the movie is about 2 people who want to accomplish a dream and go out and do it. It's basically a movie about reaching for the stars because even if you fail, you land on a cloud.

This movie based on one of the worst films of all time is fantastic in every sense of the word. I didn't think he would, but James Franco OWNS the role of Tommy Wiseau. His voice, mannerisms, and sometimes even his look can get spot-on for portraying Wiseau. The journey Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero go on to make this movie is both hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. And this is no where near as prevalent as when the ending happens. It's such a unique ending and it has a unique message.

James Franco's biopic is a good homage to the behind the scenes of the worst film ever made. It is truly enjoyable and somewhat informative to what happened behind the scenes, however was a fairly predictable plot and expected film about Hollywood's most eccentric director.

The Disaster Artist is about the enigma known as Tommy Wiseau, and his cult creation, The Room. The movie offers a tongue-in-cheek glimpse into the making of The Room, and what led to it's conception. James Franco was brilliant. He captures the essence, and mannerisms of Tommy Wiseau incredibly well. I was convinced that I was seeing Tommy, instead of Franco. Everyone here acted brilliantly when they were asked to act horrendously. The movie will satisfy all your expectations coming into the theater. It will make you laugh out loud, while making you cringe. It's an awkward "Did that really happen?" kind of laugh, and I love that. Overall, I really did enjoy this film, and it was a feel-good kind of movie for me. I felt good coming in, and I felt even better coming out of that theater. I don't think you need to watch The Room before watching this film, but it helps to know a bit about The Room beforehand. It's better, but it's not needed. I do recommend this movie to anyone who wants to have a good time. Read about, or better yet, watch The Room to enhance your appreciation for The Disaster Artist.

This movie definitely maked me appreciate The Room way more than i already did, it showed how tough it was and how courageous they were. I like how the movie teach you that if you want something, you gotta go for it, just like that, don't make questions, but work hard investing your time and whatever else you could to make it happen, not mattering where you from, how old you are or who you know. Tommy Wiseau story on motivating and doing this movie is fantastic, how no one believed in him and how he was affraid to say that he wasn't even from U.S., probably because of the fear of repression, then he just said "you know what? i'm gonna do this anyway", or better.. We gonna do this, because Greg also have a nice story. The way that Tommy convinces Greg to get on that trip is just simply and well done by James Franco, which brings us to the actors performance, James and Dave Franco do a great job, because they are brothers the chemistry works very well, so together as individually. James Fraco transmits the character, almost perfectly, facets, extravagance, passion and personality, the accent is great and very close to the real one. "HAHAHA" Technically the movie is operant, it works but isn't special, but it is very funny and dramatic, the end of the movie really puts you in some emotional moment that you can feel it, much because of Francos acting. I believe that the post-production of The Room could have been more exploited, the dubbing and the montage could have provided some comic moments. The recreation of scenes are phenomenal that in general gonna put you in laugh mode. I like to say that the room is a terrible voluntary drama and a great involuntary comedy. The disaster artist literally makes you feel how hard and worthy was that movie, trying to score a goal and ending up making a basket brilliantly.

IDK, Maybe I am missing the appeal of this film because I thought it ****. Half the movie is spent on this painfully awkward introduction to Mark and Tommy's "friendship". This friendship really comes off as Mark realizing that Tommy was rich and so he uses Tommy and his money to further his potential acting career. Progressively through the movie, We kind of see that confirmation as Mark becomes frustrated with not just making the film but also with lack of work as an actor and in turn he takes the frustrations out on Tommy, who genuinely seems to be lost in his own little world. And performance wise, I get that they have to act terribly when re-creating scenes from the actual film but even when they are acting outside of that, The cast still does a bad job at acting in general. It just doesn't sit right. And I didn't find the movie funny at all, I found it more pathetic than anything. And the trailers spoiled a good many of the "funny" moments throughout so that kind of ruined the fun as well.

If you have ever been a fan of movies past 2003, you might have heard of a little known film known as The Room. Written, directed, produced by and starring Tommy Wiseau, The Room is widely considered one of the worst, yet best movies ever made, sporting hilariously bad acting, bland direction and a lackluster plot, as such, it has gained a massive cult following over the years for being a generally hilarious movie to watch, not because of its comedic writing, but for its infamously bad, well, everything. So, when The Disaster Artist hit theaters in late 2017 with little fanfare, no one really expected much out of it. Many, myself included, simply dismissed the movie as a parody of sorts and had thought of watching it as such. To us, it had felt like an attempt to recreate the classic disaster-piece, but with James Franco as Tommy Wiseau. To our suprise though, the film was much more than that. The Disaster Artist had gone down a route that no one had ever saw coming, the film had humanized the classic cult flick, the absurd, surreal and extremely overacted movie had suddenly become a project that the viewer could sympathize with. As much as we could laugh at Tommy Wiseau's terrible acting, James Franco had managed to paint him in a light that the general public never saw him in. The world knew Mr Wiseau as a joke, a laughing stock, but we hardly saw him as a person that really put his heart and soul into his vision that, although terrible, was precious to him. The movie is still filled with memorable laughs, from James Franco's spot on portrayal of the flamboyant Tommy Wiseau, to the overall relationship between Tommy and Greg Sestero, it never felt too serious or too lighthearted and got that middle ground that many films struggle to reach. Surprisingly warm and heartfelt, The Disaster Artist is definitely a film to catch and watch if you have ever seen the original The Room, or if you've just heard about it from the countless youtube videos and memes that it has spawned.

"The Disaster Artist" was a very good movie, the story was very good, although it had some flaws. And the interpretations were good. First of all I didn't watched the movie Room so it was probably my mistake for picking this movie. At first I didn't even knew what this movie was about, but it had some similar scenes and I remembered that these scenes is so similar with scenes of movie Room which I watched before. So then I knew what it was about it kinda disappointing me but I still managed to watch it till the end. But at the end I felt nothing, nothing special.

Led by a very powerful performance from James Franco, "The Disaster Artist" is compelling, dramatic, funny, and light-heartedly heavy. Faithful to a very unusual true story, and telling the events of how one of the worst movies of all time came together, with some well-placed analogies between the scenes from "The Room" and the re-enactments of those same scenes in the 2017 hit at the end, this film makes for a very enjoyable watch.

I mean, this movie hit it right, i haven't watched The Room, but i definitely want to watch it... imagine that, i want to watch the so called "best worst movie ever". James Franco did wonders in this part, and Seth Rogen was fantastic, and leaving the mistery behind Tommy Wiseau is also a great way to end. Of course there are menor issues like the fact that they should have dove more into the start of the Tommy and Greg friendship, because it seems they just become friends out of the blue and in a day he's moving to LA with someone. But i enjoyed myself watching this and made me appreciate James Franco even more
