Well written and directed, with a loaded supporting cast. Heath Ledger is so good, may re-watch A Knight's Tale soon.

Brokeback Mountain reels you in with soft, satisfying ranching, the kind that seems impossible to imagine in today's urban landscape. And then it pulls away, leaving the characters (and viewers) longing for simpler times. I'll remember my time on Brokeback Mountain, for how it tried to break through the biases of the general public when we weren't quite there yet.

The devastating resonance of a silent, forbidden truth: A 5.0-star "visceral" masterpiece.2012 (5.0)I watched "Brokeback Mountain" in 2012, and it was a **** "revelation" that left an indelible mark on my cinematic archive. The film’s narrative rhythm is incredibly "chewy" and deliberate, allowing the raw, unspoken emotions between the characters to build into a high-tension atmosphere that is both beautiful and agonizing. Unlike the stagnant, 1.0-star melodramas that rely on hollow tropes, this story offered a visceral look at the pathetic tragedy of a life lived in hiding, **** the fourth wall of my emotional defenses. The 95% preservation of my memory from that viewing is dominated by the vast, lonely landscapes that mirrored the internal isolation of the protagonists. It was a "sensational" experience in the truest sense—not through noise or spectacle, but through the staggering weight of its silent frustrations and the raw honesty of its performances. This film didn't just tell a story; it created a profound sense of immersion that made the eventual loss feel personal and suffocating. It stands as a perfect 5.0-star pillar because of its uncompromising courage to explore the most painful depths of human nature, leaving me in a state of quiet reflection long after the credits rolled.

"Brokeback Mountain" is still lyrical poetic melodrama that takes a modern-age Western that turns into a quietly revolutionary love story. Ang Lee's visual eye for forbidden love stories with Diana Ossana along with Larry McMurtry exquisite understanding of the traits of characters in the American west comes together creates something that is mysterious ambiguous but intensifying and extremely powerful. James Schamus who is the defining revolutionary pioneer of independent film created Focus Features in 2002 to take on risky projects that pushed the boundaries of cinema after serving as a professor of film history at Columbia University for years while championing auteur directors getting their films off the ground like Claire Denis, Todd Haynes, Nicole Holofcener, Tamara Jenkins. He knew when he optioned the rights in 2001 it was his most risky challenging project to date. Diana Ossana had read the short story from Annie Proux when it came out. Pedro Almodóvar was initially offered the opportunity to direct, but turned it down, citing concerns about artistic freedom. At Ossana's request, Schamus showed the story and screenplay to his close friend Ang Lee after he co-wrote his films "The Wedding Banquet," "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman," "The Ice Storm," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Hulk." Lee decided to make Hulk first, his experience of Hulk, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon from two years prior left him exhausted but Schamus said to Lee "please read it you won't regret it," he did and was left in tears after reading the script. He was particularly drawn to the authentic rural American life and repression depicted in the story. As the film opens we see a young rancher Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) by himself casually waiting outside the ranch office for the other shepherd he has herd the sheep through the summer on grazing pastures on the infamous Brokeback Mountain. We see another rancher arrive and introduces himself as Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) they don't know what to make of each other, all they know is need a job to get paid as Ennis has a fiancée he has to support and is reluctant to tie the knot yet he doesn't know why while Jack is just getting by looking to pursue career in the rodeo. Orphaned at a young age after his parents died, Ennis was raised by his older brother and sister, growing up in a challenging environment of poverty and hardship. He becomes a stoic, quiet, introverted and pragmatic individual, shaped by his difficult upbringing and the limited opportunities available to him. Jack however grew up in Lightning Flat, Wyoming, around the time of World War II. He's disowned by his parents after he drops out of high school to work, much like Ennis had to. They could not be more different and yet have similar qualities to relate to. After a night of heavy drinking, Jack makes a pass at Ennis. While initially reluctant, Ennis becomes receptive, and he and Jack have sex in their tent. Despite Ennis telling Jack that it was a one-time incident, they develop a sexual and emotional relationship. We don't know what draws them two one another but their quiet realism makes us believe every second of it. Near the end of their work contract, Ennis and Jack have a fight that leaves both of them bloodied. Before parting ways, Ennis offhandedly laments that he left one of his shirts on the mountain. Years after they move on and Ennis marries his longtime sweetheart and fiancée Alma Beers (Michelle Williams) who you can tell instantly is smitten with Heath in every frame which only makes her performance so much more heartbreaking as she conveys the emotion of what it's like to loose him to someone else. As Jack moves to Texas, he meets rodeo rider Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway), a free spirited independent woman and the daughter of a wealthy agricultural machinery manufacturer; they marry and have a son. When they meet again after four years apart it's almost hard to know whether they've thought about each other but they just know they have someone to open up to about their troubles and the love is there even though they can't express it. At a motel room, Jack wants them to create a life together, but Ennis refuses to abandon his family and is haunted by a childhood memory of his father showing him the body of a man who was tortured and killed for suspected homosexuality. Without this groundbreaking story we wouldn't get powerful stories of LGBT characters like "Milk," "Carol," or "Call Me by Your Name" but none of those films have captured something as naturally honest or powerful as this. If anyone deserves an Irving G. Thalberg Award, it's James Schamus for getting this timeless masterpiece made. Two men have found something that many people, of whatever emotional persuasion, never find true love. And they can't do anything about it. They are forced to deny the only great passion either one will ever feel, their story is different from others but their tragedy is relatable and universal.

Rarely is a love story presented with such tenderness, warts and all. It simply lays out the plot and allows the characters to grow without rushing. The movie contains several incredibly moving moments, particularly those involving Ennis's relationship with his wife and daughters. I keep thinking about certain parts of that relationship over and over. It's beautifully balanced, and the conclusion is executed flawlessly. Heath Ledger is as intelligent as many claim.

I was completely mesmerised by Brokeback Mountain. It is such a beautiful and poignant film, that also benefits from being gorgeously shot and adeptly acted and directed. The film does move slowly of course, but I personally think that Brokeback Mountain was deliberately paced like that(I said very similar things about 2001 and The Godfather too, they are constantly criticised for being boring yet both had their reasons for being paced like that). The slow pacing allowed us to empathise with the characters more, and that paid off, because the characterisations are superb. As are the beautifully written and thought-provoking screenplay and gentle scoring. Ang Lee's direction is the best it's been here I feel, while the cinematography and scenery are simply breathtaking. The acting is excellent. Heath Ledger I think gives his best performance here(sorry Dark Knight fans, I loved him there, but he was beyond amazing here), while Jake Gyllanhaal is very believable, and Michelle Williams is heart-wrenching. Also Brokeback Mountain is quite emotionally affecting, it really makes you think and the sheer beauty of the visuals, acting and story are enough to make me cry, and I was in pieces after the ending. In conclusion, a mesmerising film. 10/10 Bethany Cox

As someone who is bisexual himself, this movie made me cry so much, especially the scenes where Jack and Ennis hug or fight. I truly believe that in the end Jack was brutally killed the way how Ennis imagined, not that he died the way how Laureen explained because it's a completely stupid explanation. But after watching this movie, I was thinking of it for a week. The topic in it is a truly big deal, because it shows that this thing doesn't hurt only the main characters, but their wives as well. One of the rare movies along with "Good Will Hunting" to really make me cry so hard.

A daring look at homosexual relationships filmed without contrivance and filled with contemporary filmmaking choices. The film's pacing allows us to naturally know these characters and as such, their heartbreaks leave a lasting impact on us too.

Without betting on the morbid, it is a film that tests how tolerant and open the viewer is. A love story that is put to quite complicated tests, especially for its secrecy. The first half hour can be as slow as a bureaucrat on Monday, but in the end you are left with a pleasant but bittersweet taste in your mouth. Without fail.

I finally watched Brokeback Mountain and it's was the most beautiful, touching, and heartbreaking movie I have ever watched. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal performances were astounding, they gave such beautiful, emotionally powerful, and deep performances and their chemistry was extraordinary just so beautiful and natural; two of the best performances I have ever seen and some of the best chemistry I have seen between co-stars. Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Linda Cardellini, and Anna Faris gave outstanding supporting performances. The writing was exceptional, the story and screenplay were just so beautifully heartbreaking. The character development of Ennis Del Mar, Jack Twist, and Alma Beers Del Mar was phenomenal. The cinematography was gorgeous. The costumes were stupendous especially ones wore by Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams, Anne Hathaway, Anna Faris, and David Harbour. The makeup and hairstyling was spectacular especially on Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, Anna Faris, Linda Cardellini, David Harbour, and Kate Mara. The music was remarkable. Brokeback Mountain is an A+ movie and one of my top 10 favorite movies I have ever seen.

cowboy western attempt to make something that really doesn't fly and you would never see outside Hollywood. Gays are real and they are nice people however if you're looking for a gay bud to kick it with you're not going to find much at a redneck 4H rodeo or bucking broncos bull riding club. Just a story that doesn't follow real life, this is coming from a gay guy in North Idaho who hides from cowboys because there isn't a real broke back out there...

It's very hard for me to cry about something, and there are only 2 movies that have made me cry, one is Dumbo and the other is this one. It is a moving story, with a beautiful message of tolerance. I do not care what the Academy says is the best movie of the year.

This film addresses a homosexual affair between two cowboys. Although the press and the gay-friendly publicity tried to sell the idea that it was a true homosexual romance, I was not convinced. Watching the film, I found that the script suggests something different: two lonely men whose unfulfilled emotional needs lead to a homosexual affair, despite their marriages and individual commitments. There is no love in this. The film is essentially about doubts, unfulfilled emotions, moral and emotional conflicts, the breaking of taboos and the consequences that it has afterwards, in the life of the one who did it. In any case, it is undeniably one of the most remarkable films of Heath Ledger's career. The actor deserves applause for his work in this film, where he dominated and stole the limelight from his own colleague Jake Gyllenhaal. This actor, for his part, has always been much more obliterated and the way he interpreted was not so interesting or consistent. Ang Lee did a decent job, but he seemed to be particularly focused on giving the film a good scenery and cinematography, with great success in that. Even so, the result of his work was a lukewarm, slow-paced film, and that makes it annoying, cutting off the connection between the audience and what they're watching.

This is honestly one of my favorite films. It is a classic that will sneak it's way into your heart. In a sentence, it is the ultimate forbidden love story. A fun fact: My username, The3AcademySins, refers to one of the three sins that I believe the Academy has committed. This sin was not giving Brokeback Mountain Best Picture. This movie is hands down the best performance that Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal have ever given. Wow. The script is one of the realest, heartfelt, moving movies I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. In a way, this movie made me a better person after viewing it. I recommend this movie to everyone, even my friends who might not like gay movies, and everyone loves. Please, if you haven't seen Brokeback Mountain yet, do yourself a favor and go watch it!

Brokeback Mountain is slow and methodic, yet incessantly beautiful all the same. With some gorgeous shots of Wyoming in its back pocket, Ang Lee's romantic western is a moving portrayal of gay love in a time when it was unacceptable to the majority of society. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal have undeniable chemistry and their love is believable. However, I have many problems with their romance, which prevents me from loving the film. Firstly, Lee decides to show them eating beans and then bang, all of a sudden, they are lovers. Though there is sexual tension between them beforehand, it seems odd that in a time when being gay is so taboo, two men would quickly rush into sex. Secondly, the film skims through years and opts to ignore the negative side of this romance. Yes, these two love each other. However, what about their wives (Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway)? What about their children? Not only are they both adulterers, but they ignore their spouses and children repeatedly in the film. I get that they are repressed homosexuals, which is obviously terrible, but it makes it hard for me to feel sympathy for two men who are so morally repugnant. The only mistake these women made was marrying a man who is gay, which apparently makes them deserving of being cheated on. There is no sympathy for the struggles of our gay lovers due to their lack of respect for the women in their lives and, heck, even their own kids. Ennis (Ledger) very clearly never sees his daughters. By the end, he only has a relationship with one (Kate Mara). How is this okay? Lee makes some effort to condemn the deception to Ennis' wife, but quickly reverts to trying to make us feel sympathy for him once more. That said, their relationship is undeniably electric. Though I have problems with the rushing of it all, Lee does expertly counter this by showing Gyllenhaal's initial hesitation to rush things with Hathaway. Through this, we are able to see his true colors and sexual desires. It is also showcased in his interactions with Hathaway and Ledger. While with his wife, he clearly lacks passion and is on edge. With Ledger, he is loose, free, and head over heels. Lee develops this angle brilliantly. Additionally, the ending sequence made me into a believer. The clothing, the photo, and the trauma Ennis faces at the end, really hit home. In order for non-gay viewers to truly overcome any prejudices, this scene is almost a much, because it shows how real their love is for them. They did not choose this life. Instead, it was who they are. This is ever present in this scene and is truly the dramatic and romantic triumph of this film. While the development of the romance felt off for me, the ending was easily the best part of this film. Brokeback Mountain is beloved by many. For me, it is a good western and good romance, but simply never commits to actually developing the romance, instead opting to fast forward to the "good bits" with no build-up. Even worse, it never fully condemns the more reprehensible actions of Ennis and Jack. That said, the emotional power and force of this film is impossible to deny.

Having read the short story upon which this is based, I'm impressed that they were able to create such a good movie. But it's still a SHORT story; there's not really enough content for a whole movie. However... The music is both haunting and beautiful. The acting and cinematography are incredible.

Ok so i know the movie is now kinda old, but i just love this story.. Anyone who writes negative about this is a jackass!! If you can't see how amazing and touching this story is then your not human. I have myself had this happen where it was a forbidden love that both wanted but couldn't move forward with due to circumstances, age. To both want something you know you can never have is the worst thing to ever encounter in your life. What i got from the movie is always reach for what you want, person, job, relationship because you never know what will happen at least you gave it a shot...

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful, thought provoking and devastating movies to ever grace the screen. After watching this film I just couldn't get over it. This masterpiece contains such beautiful acting that you can feel every inch of emotion poured into this film by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. The cinematography is wonderful and the scenery of this film takes my breath away. I can't forget the soundtrack, beautifully composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, the music still haunts me to this day but I am thankful for it. Literally everything about this masterpiece from the brilliant Ang Lee is spectacular. DON'T miss out on this angelic film.

A ridiculous movie of which the critics feel compelled to like. I read reviews of this movie from them before the thing was even available for their viewing. It is a chick-flick meant to show that even gay men can be sensitive, and caring. I would be willing to bet there isn't a straight man in America that went to see this piece of psuedo-gay porn voluntarily. They went only because their wives and girlfriends wanted them to. If this were about two women it maybe, MAYBE would have made it onto the Lifetime channel.

Brokeback Mountain’s faults make it clear that it was based off of a short story. The film goes on for while taking many scenes to establish what was made clear in one scene. Despite lengthy time going by its hard to get a sense of the characters outside of what is shown and given the nature of story it would be beneficial to understand what the characters thinking. Even with these faults the film still gets across its story nicely. The film nicely captures the struggles of tow men dealing with their relationship with each other in a story that is touching and emotional.

In the summer of 1963, two cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, are assigned the job of herding sheep on a mountainside in Wyoming. But amidst the grand beauty of Brokeback Mountain, the two men fall in love with one another. But when the job is done, they're forced to walk their separate ways. Ennis' father taught him to condemn homosexuality when he was a child, and so he began to condemn his own feelings. Both men are forced to deny the only passion either of them will ever feel. They pretend so as to fit in with the others. And in doing so they hurt themselves and carry great pain with each passing moment. Both Ennis and Jack marry and have children. But every once in while, they'd get to meet up on Brokeback Mountain where they can finally stop pretending and expose there vulnerability. This is where their hearts truly lie. Brokeback Mountain is powerful, beautiful and poetic. It hits you right on your chest like a bullet when you least expect it and steals away your heart. The cinematography is gorgeous, the score is elegant and all performances, particularly Ledger's as the restrained and distant Ennis Del Mar, are marvellous. This is Ang Lee's masterpiece. Brokeback Mountain was the best film of 2005 and the greatest / most important love story of this century.
