If you think Resident Evil 4 is dated, then you're a heathen. It's still as fresh now as it's ever been, although you may have to adjust to the control system which is showing its age. More bonus content would have been nice, but the chance to revisit a bona-fide modern classic is massively welcome. Welcome to Resident Evil 4 HD, stranger! You're going to love it all over again.

Not quite as outstanding as it once was, but still a benchmark release. [Issue#77, p.102]
With an adventure so far unmatched for memorable moments and constant thrills, the game is truly one of a kind.

Resident Evil 4 is still an unsurpassed masterpiece on the 360, but the only reason you should still buy it is if you don't already own it on another console, or if you really want to see the game in HD. If you don't have it or have never played it, though, go get RE4 now--you owe it to yourself as a gamer.

While the opening chapter proved to be a lesson in re-learning how to play, once it all clicked again it became apparent just how much I love Capcom's highly-celebrated game. For me it's easily the best Resident Evil title, and an absolute must-buy for anyone interested in action or horror. Resident Evil 4 remains one of the greats.

Even after six years, this is still one of the best games out there, and it has aged ridiculously well.

The excellently crafted encounters, tons of extras and story are well worth the price of admission.

It is the same great game we enjoyed six years ago, but visually upgraded. Its gameplay hasn't aged, and its levels are still varied and thrilling. We only miss a retail edition including this game and Code Veronica HD, just like in Japan, as the digital download can be considered pricey by many players.

Resident Evil 4 is still a brilliant game, but this HD version is not what we were dreaming of: it's just an upscaled version of the GameCube edition of "Resi 4". After 6 years of loyalty, we deserved something better from Capcom.

Retroactively reviewing this game is often met with opinions of protective fans and vice versa, "haters" . This review isn't attempting to undermine the game's legacy . RE4 is a personal guilty pleasure and has made many milestones in shaping modern action games today. Still, I don’t believe it’s not subject to an honest review on playing this game nearly two decades later. Regardless of personal opinion, it is hard to deny that RE4 is a pretty important game for the series, mainly because it showcases the game dev's love for B-movie plots and dialogue ( in localization particularly). The plot is pretty straightforward; you play Leon S. Kennedy, a returning protagonist from RE2 (1998). Now a secret agent, he has gone to a rural region in Spain in search of the president's missing daughter, Ashley Graham. Along the way, he discovers something very wrong with his surroundings. Resident Evil 4's charm lies in its odd blending between campiness and some surprisingly morbid moments. It is easy to disregard some of the more disturbing enemies and hinted lore behind the cheesy one-liners. Despite this the game does find the right balance in establishing a more uncanny ambience through its soundtrack. ( “ Serenity” being an absolute gem.) However, the writing of the game finds itself a little divided. Resident Evil has never been the epitome of consistent writing, but the disparity between RE2 and RE4 Leon, compared to RE1 and RE3 Jill, for example, is pretty apparent. That's not to say that RE4 Leon isn't a charming character, and his one-liners remain well-endeared by the fandom and the franchise’s comic relief. However, compared to the astute rookie in RE2 to stylish action-hero , Leon feels like only a "minor" clog in the series’ cast . Nevertheless it isn’t a surprise per se when the main creator has commented that while the game itself attained long-term development, the actual script was written in a very short time frame. RE4 is a pretty different gameplay game from previous instalments. There's no point in sugarcoating that, compared to RE0 (2002) or RE1R, which relied on pre-rendered backgrounds and still look fairly good today, 3D modelling in this game sometimes feels its age with the stark backgrounds and palettes despite the cinematic cutscenes . ( Although this isn’t so much a limitation as just a reflection of elements of game modelling which belong to the time .) I am going to be controversial in saying this game’s biggest issue isn’t the tank controls. They’re a little sluggish, sure, but it’s a good training exercise in testing your ability against limitations . Controversially I will also say that Ashley’s AI commands are pretty easy to navigate and although there are challenges, it’s much easier than you think. Evidently, there’s a lot of debate on whether the slow controls were intentional for the “‘experience” or “ lazily” done. ( Personally while I believe the sluggishness was not a technological limitation, I do lean more realistically towards budget being put elsewhere by the developers .) Where my major critique lay more with this game’s port were the QTEs. Simply put, it isn't so much carrying the QTEs existing, as it is with the inability through FPs rates to carry them out on a modern control often leading to a bug . ( RE4 is the only game from 2005 I have played on the PS4 where I can't complete Professional, not because of the difficulty, but because of the incapability of the frame rate to catch up with the buttons.) On the other hand, RE4's idea to use the merchant as a game mechanic (significantly to level weapons and progress), the loading animations for guns, and the adaptive difficulty are pretty ingenious. Simply put; this game thrives off variety in using levels to your advantage alongside its over-the-shoulder combat . However; it is also struggles by feeding into the territory of feeling superfluous around halfway through the castle. Still, credit is due in how the developers looked back on the original games and even RE0, to rethink how to experiment with level-design and AI. Overall thoughts; I fear that for this modern port, the original smooth-running of the game is greatly diminished by QTES and a lack of upscale for Seperate Ways . As a game in itself, RE4 is a great game. Would I say it’s flawless? Honestly, no. The writing is pretty thin and the graphics are very much a reminder this. ( In a way partially nostalgic as well as confusing trying to work out what items and backgrounds are.) Still, the level of designs remains innovative even today. The character designs are brilliant ( especially Ada and Leon), and it’s easy to see why the game has heavily influenced so many modern action titles. How you believe RE4 has shaped the series as a whole is more of a matter of personal opinion. I recommend playing the game at least once, as it is undeniably a classic. Just stay clear of this port.

I remember playing this game on the PS2 way back when it first came out (for that console). It was fun, unique for it’s time, but for me anyway it was nothing special. I remember going back to the well with the OG RE2 more times than RE4, once me and my friends completed RE4, played through all the extras, that was it, never picked it up again. Years later after being away from any mainstream gaming culture, I was surprised to find out this game is revered as a masterpiece and seminal in making many games what they are today. I can see the transference from RE4 to Dead Space, and I can also see the huge improvements, and overall superiority with DS. It’s like RE4 opened the door, but DS decorated the whole room and made it something you could live in. RE4 imo doesn’t have that ‘liveable space’ (to be incidentally ironic) that DS has, I can go back to DS and still enjoy it every time. RE4? Playing it recently, my god did it drag on, and on, and on. It gets boring, and the controls only frustrate the longer i played on Nomral difficulty, on a game mechanics level, the game is not equipped to deal with the enemies it's constantly throwing at you. So why did i keep playing it for 2 weeks before cutting my ties with it completely? I will give it this, there is something slightly addictive about it, and the main reason I went back is to get one unlockable I didn’t know existed (the P.R.L laser). Finding out I had to play on Normal to unlock Professional, after one run-through on easy, I got half way through a Normal campaign and just couldn’t take any more. The constant enemies, the constant shooting, the constant awkward controls, lack of clarity in seeing where the enemies are thus getting cheap shotted from behind, the delay (maybe Xbox port related) in controls often screw-in me over in crucial moments where I need to aim before another enemy grabs me point range. It’s just a constant rinse-repeat of; enemies, clear space onto the next area, shoot more masses of enemies, clear area, next area, shoot enemies… How can anyone perpetually enjoy this? It started to become torture to me. So boring and frustrating. I don’t get any sense of reward or adrenaline or achievement from shooting the same annoying enemy a.i over and over. I get the addiction with COD online multiplayer because they are live enemies sitting in their room and you’re trying to outmanoeuvre each other, a game of wits and skills, this is just monotonous shooting of imposter zombies. I think, the saving grace for it that had me slightly hooked, in terms of a ‘reward system’ is the treasure hunting and the gun upgrades, these are like mini-games within the game itself and probably were giving me a kind of small boost of dopamine when established. The controls are just so clunky, even with the analogue stick, controlling Leon is like controlling a tank, “hold up fake zombies, let me put it in reverse, ok now I need to flip about-face turn, ok now run…ah too late he grabbed me” try backing off then aiming, still not enough at times. Awful controls. At least the tank controls in the OG RE’s made sense and fit the design of these games perfectly due to the ever shifting camera views (persistence of forward motion, aka forward always being... forward, duh). As funny as some of the quippy one liners from Leon can be, I won’t even go there with it’s lacklustre ridiculous story, not to mention this game being responsible for the killing off in the Resident Evil franchise of pure, true "Survival Horror"…. that and the modern gaming market now being saturated with over-the-shoulder 3rd person view games, and games like the new God of War using this view being the most obnoxious misuse of a view (designed for shooting down the barrel in 3rd person) for a hack'n'slash game. My God (facepalm). Resident Evil 4 is one of the most overrated games in history.

The worst game in the series gets a HD remake. I dont know where to start with this review. As I played this game I had no idea what I was playing. This game just throws you into the woods to rescue the presidents daughter. You play leon kennedy once again and hes some sort of secret agent now. Heres my problem the story. They dont explain anything thats going on in this place nor explain how leon got to be from rookie cop to freakin oo7. Its really terrible. The enemies don't makes sense either. There are times where I's saying, "What is this?" or "Who the hell is he?" I just don't understand why they couldnt do the HD remake of Resident Evil Remake that was on Gamecube. I would have bought that and to me was a phenominal game compared tho this.
