Midway has done a great job of taking a very popular, well-entrenched franchise and moving it over to another genre with success. Shaolin Monks isn't without its faults, but the game's tenets are good, the moves, the fighting, the unlockables, and its surprising level of depth all count for so much. And all of this is topped off with the superb co-op mode.
Shaolin Monks certainly has its problems, but the action at its heart is the most enjoyable the series has offered in ages.
Apart from actually putting together a completely decent gameplay engine, Shaolin Monks is so ridiculously chock-full of hidden goodies and subtle wink-and-nod-style in-jokes that anybody who professes to have a degree in MK will be hard-pressed not to come away entertained.

Un spin-off muy querido que logró traducir Mortal Kombat a la acción-aventura con éxito, siendo uno de los juegos más divertidos de la saga. Modo cooperativo. Combate divertido y fluido. Mucho fanservice. Historia alternativa del MKII. Exploración y secretos. Puntos débiles: Cámara incómoda en ocasiones. Repetición en algunos niveles. No es tan profundo como otros MK

A shining triumph of beat 'em up glory, spinning off from the traditional MK one-on-one gameplay and showing us all just how excellent the old-school beat 'em up can be in this current generation of gaming.

A good mix of an action/adventure game and a traditional fighter. Fans of either genre will find something to enjoy and MK fans will especially enjoy the references to MK lore.

What you get out of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks depends on your familiarity with the series. The more you know, the more you’ll like.

It's not overly deep or terribly long, but for anyone looking for simple, cartoonish blood and brutality, this is very definitely the place.

Were it not for the sometimes-unclear objectives (coupled with a tough-to-follow map); puzzles that almost always involve throwing an enemy into a wall, spikes, and the like; and some minor annoyances, this one would be award worthy.

It won’t win any game of the year awards, but for a piece of brainless action, you can’t really go wrong with Shaolin Monks.

It’s a non-offensive way to while away a few hours digging up the past, but the core gameplay doesn’t hold a candle to the title it’s so fondly remembering. [Nov 2005, p.108]

I used to play this game with my older brother and it had many memorable parts for me. It is strange that this game is not remastered or remade. The game has some flaws, but the gameplay and action cover it up.

Great game. I've played through the story many times. I would really like to see a remake of this game.

It was one of my favorite MK games, but looking back at it, it is really a bad one. MK story has always been bad, so its no surprise, but the thing i dont like about this one is the combat itself, it is a downhill from Deception, the fatality feel childish and its very short animation is just like super move not like a deadly combo, the stage fatalities are also boring and not impressive, the music is boring as well. I liked it when i was a kid, so i guess its good for kids/teens, but as for now its a shallow and bland game with weak combat. 4/10

SummaryMortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is an Action/Adventure title driven by both intense single and multi-player action. Similar to "Mortal Kombat: Deception," background interactions (i.e., acid pits, living trees, spiked ceilings, etc.), multiple new fatalities, and action-based puzzles also play an important role in the player's quest for an ...
