Fantasian: Neo Dimension is an exciting turn-based RPG that cements the stylings of Mistwalker and Sakaguchi-san's directorial vision. A marked uptick in quality from Fantasian on Apple Arcade, this revamped version hits the classic highs of JRPGs as well as offers an experience that feels polished, complete and exciting. For lovers of older Final Fantasy games, this will scratch the itch, doubly so with the involvement of Uematsu-san, yet another auditory love letter from the master. All in all, this is THE game for JRPG fans.

Fantasian Neo Dimension is a tale of two halves. Its first half feels like an homage to the older parts of the legendary catalogue of its creators. The second half, meanwhile, feels like that homage got to flex its muscles and pummel players into submission as they endeavor against boss fights until the adventure reaches its conclusion. Those able to adapt to the shifting changes between halves will find a love letter to turn-based RPGs that could only come from lifelong experts. The pacing shifts cause a juxtaposition between a restrictive feeling start and thematically minimal end, which just goes to show that even experts can find ways to grow in a given field. Where passion, creativity, and talent co-exist in such a lovely harmony always means there’s new avenues to explore and this wonderful game is worth undertaking the journey.

While FANTASIAN Neo Dimension may not end as well as it begins, this is still an excellent RPG featuring wonderful characters, an interesting story, and perhaps my favorite battle system of any RPG I played in 2024. This is the ultimate way to play it as well, with an easier difficulty and new soundtrack options inspired by this version of the game being published by Square Enix. Fans of the genre won’t want to miss this one.

not the best rpg but it was an overall good moment. A lot of interresting ideas. Story was well driven and characters are really goods.

Too classic for me. The originality of using digitized models for the environments and the interesting character backstories don't compensate for how difficult the game is with some bosses and how weak the main story is. The bosses are a real issue, many players need a guide if they don't want to spend five hours with each one, and the final bosses... they practically force you to have completed ALL the side content so they don't wipe the floor with you. Add to that the technical problems with the Switch port, from endless loading screens to frequent slowdowns. A disappointment, given how much I expected from this game.

It’s hard to shake the feeling that Fantasian was a project designed to give several legends of the JRPG genre closure. By revising their great classic and both modernising and paying homage to it in equal measures, they can look back at their careers with the satisfaction of having completed a full journey of their own. For people that clearly love storytelling so much it’s hard to imagine a better way to finish up.

Now that Fantasian Neo Dimension has escaped the grasp of Apple Arcade, more people will be able to experience another delightful adventure from Hironobu Sakaguchi's studio, which continues to prove that what made JRPGs famous in the '90s still works. Not only does it deliver an efficient gameplay experience for the player, but it also presents a story with which one can empathize, keeping you engaged until the very end to achieve the satisfaction of finishing a game that is quite challenging.

I've only played demo, so will update later when I've played the full game. The OST is pretty cool. Whilst not particularly memorable, it is very noticeable. I thought the music was great for the scenes but without playing it too safe. I quite like the graphical look. Not sure why. It's a bit **** but something just likeable there. I'm not typically a turn based combat player, so my opinion on that is probs not worth much but I have enjoyed it. This is now an edit and an upped score cos the invisible bump battles were doing my nut in but a mechanic has been introduced to collect up to 30 enemies, then fight them all at once. What a God send. It literally just introduced it at the point I was getting sick of spamming on 3 weak enemies. Really loving the game now. I'm actually a bit gutted cos not going to have free cash to buy it for a few weeks and now the demo is done, I want to carry on playing. The game has just clicked with me. I have actually bought Romancing Saga 2 which is arriving tomorrow and having completed both demos now, I wish I'd opted for Neo over Saga. Considering Saga looks way more like my type of game, I defo enjoyed Neo more and will be getting the full game asap.

Neo Dimension is a superlatively crafted JRPG that harkens back to the classics while still implementing the modern for a true gem. It takes a simple seeming premise that may seem to start with tropes and weaves it into something so much greater. It hooks you with sudden events, mystery and cool moments, then layers on good characters that grow in interesting and unique ways making them become greater into a wonderful JRPG cast up there with the greats. The CTB like combat is excellent adding in more with directing attacks and it becomes excellent with skill trees, builds, expression and challenging bosses. The dimengeon mechanic is a really good way to make encounters player focused. The bossses push the player in both expression and a puzzle like manor. Like it or not this game will push you, game over you and make your rethink/ rework and push levels but when you win its CATHARDIC unlike other jrpgs which feel like you can break easier. The world is well crafted and thoughtfull with interesting approach to the realms, and antagonists presented making them interesting and asking questions with a great sense of more complexity. I love how the voice acting and more added in neo adds so much to backstories and the characters its very well done. The music is really good and adding the choices of ff ost in neo makes it a more dynamic playthrough experience. The diorama made locale designs are wonderful and artistic and so cool. Sacaguichi the og director of FF proves he fully understands what made jrpgs so special while adding modernizations and elements to make this game masterful and really special.

A rather classical JRPG with an outstanding character, lots of lovingly designed details, modernizations in the right places and a special pinch of magic.

The cult classic mobile RPG finally gets its due, for lovers of mechanics over story who can rise to the demands of its extreme challenge.

Fantasian: Neo Dimension is a competent JRPG which strikes a sweet spot without pretending to be either nostalgic or innovative. It delivers a catchy narrative with a classic but thoughtful battle system and some neat QoL that makes this new edition far better than its original mobile run.

Taking the time to farm elemental resistant accessories, equipment upgrades, and stronger skills, setting up your party loadout just so at a save point, then watching your team get ragdolled anyway all while you’re several levels above what the game says you need completely overshadows the effort put into the careful, puzzle-like design of each boss. Which is a shame, because if those fights weren’t so egregiously overtuned in such an unproductive way, the stuff actually holding up Fantasian’s systems would’ve really shined. The criticism from before clearly had an impact, but even with the adjustments there’s still moments where this game isn’t fun at all to engage with on its given terms. Even everything else, from Uematsu’s thematically apt soundtrack to the super neat diorama visuals, is hard to enjoy when your brain is bogged down by constant dread. Fantasian Neo Dimension has a distinct vibe and a lot of cool ideas, but over-commits to its idea of challenge such that it buries its own nuances under a pile of big numbers.

Fantasian Neo Dimension is a wonderful game that I will remember for a long time. It reminds me of the Final Fantasy VI to X era with vibes also from Terra Battle, a mobile game I loved playing back in the day, by Mistwalker. Pros:
- Dimengeon mechanics that allow you to save random encounters and battle them as a bunch later is a game changer that I wish all random encounter games would adopt.
- Battle Mechanics are fun and got me discovering new things frequently.
- Bosses really kept challenging me without ever feeling impossible.
- I ended up loving all the characters in one way or another.
- Soundtrack was very enjoyable.
- The new upgrade mechanics from the second half of the game got me really giddy and excited.
- Story was solid and I wanted to keep following it throughout the game. Cons:
- There was some extremely cringy stuff in the story like harem dynamics between some characters and a character checking through female characters wardrobe. It was somehow cringier than similar stuff in e.g. Final Fantasy VII.
- While I loved the second half of the game it did get bit repetitive in terms of exploration style as hours kept on accumulating.
- At least on Switch the text was sometimes lagging behind without being able to fast forward it as usual. Definitely recommending this to RPG fans. As the credits were rolling I was really happy that I got to play this game. For me the game took around 75 hours to complete but I was exploring things in a non-optimal way.

Another bad game by Mistwalker. These guys just can't stop missing. It's like the director is more obsessed with trying to chase his old fame with western audiences than actually making a good game.
