Xtreme Legends is the archetypal Dynasty Warriors expansion pack, adding more ways to experience the same tired gameplay.

There's just so much to do in Xtreme Legends that any fan will need to pick it up. [Holiday 2005, p.84]

For regular gamers, this is more of the same with a few slight twists. Unfortunately, none of the twists happen in gameplay, where they're desperately needed.

Dynasty Warriors 5 + Xtreme Legends was my entry point to the series — oddly enough during the PS3 era — but it pulled me in so much that I went backwards to explore it. Even with all the years that have passed, alongside Warriors Orochi 2 it remains my favorite Warriors game of the 128-bit generation.Combat doesn’t have the massive scale of the newer entries, but enemies here are tougher, less like paper targets. Instead of endless campaigns, you get a flood of shorter scenarios — and an absolute ton of things to unlock. Xtreme Legends piles on extra modes, challenges, and systems, making the whole package endlessly replayable. My favorite addition? Creating your own character. Build several of them, and you might even encounter one as an enemy on the battlefield — a surreal, unforgettable moment that stuck with me more than any cutscene or scripted twist.Despite its reputation as “just hack and slash,” this is a surprisingly tactical game. You need to understand the systems, the flow of the stages, and how to approach each fight. It’s less about checking endless objectives (like in the later Warriors, which can sometimes drown you in markers) and more about finding and defeating the boss, pure and direct. Not flawless, but absolutely essential. It’s a game that defined why Warriors clicked for me — methodical, addictive, strange, and uniquely satisfying. In essence: 8/10.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends is an ok game, but I’m sick of the blatant milking of this cash cow.

More of the same from KOEI; mindless hack and slash action that is fun in short bursts.
55
This feels rushed.

Koei jazzes up their flagship franchise just in time for the holidays, but doesn't seem to offer enough to warrant the asking price.
42
For the love of gaming Koei, this is just another mediocre expansion pack for a game that played like a glorified expansion pack to yet more games which felt little more than expansion packs themselves.
