Good strategy city builder with an innovative setting and a gameplay loop that has serious potential, but it is sadly let down by scripted (not randomised, but properly scripted) events meaning no matter how effective you are at managing the city, the game will force scenarios on you impacting your performance. The basis of this game is very strong, but overall misses out on greatness due to the above.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl3

At first an impressive open world survival FPS, but the more you get in you realise how bad the various game mechanics and AI are, alongside the poor menu config and complicated controls on a controller. On a PS5 this is just about playable on the easiest setting, as anything else is just poor frustration due to random AI spawns, buggy gameplay and a punishing difficulty. overall sadly not worth it.

A missed opportunity. Playing this in late 2023 including phantom liberty DLC. yes the game looks amazing and Night City is incredible to explore, but this game is nothing more than an FPS GTA pretending to be an RPG. Your decisions have no consequences as the entire game is on rails, the combat does not reward you for playing in stealth and it is always more fun to use guns. The dialogue is incredibly cringeworthy, to the point where you want to skip most interactions (in particiular Johnny Silverhand - Reeves acts well but these lines... my god they are bad) - arguably it tries to be witty along the lines of GTA5, but fails miserably in its continuous pseudo tough guy writing, that sounds as if it was written by a 15 year old who thinks they are sounding cool. The worst thing about this game is it is in essence not a cyberpunk genre game. Cyberpunk as a literary subgenre explores human fears and prospects of dystopian capitalism in the future. None of this is achieved here. The story, whilst potentially interesting, loses focus in that although you are a cyborg with a ticking bomb in your head, you are free to roam night city and spending money on clothing, apartments, cars etc. all whilst none of the story and side quests delve deeper into the definitive aspects of the cyberpunk genre. It is fun for what it is, but ultimately a shame thinking that this could have been an absolute masterpiece if the producers would have had more understanding and clearer vision of what the cyberpunk genre actually is.

Excellent game. I never played the original so am new to the franchise. Amazing atmosphere, story and gameplay. Misses out on being a 10 because of too much emphasis on jump scares ie. enemies appearing behind you out of literally nowhere which just becomes tedious after the third times it happens, as well as poor resolution on PS5

PS5 version 1.6 is a great open world game that gets some things absolutely right, and some things not. When it is at its best it is an absolute joy to play:- pros: - great looking world and graphics - engaging main story and lore - excellent side quests that are genuinely fun to play and well written - interesting and deep characters both the main ones and side - excellent gun mechanics - excellent music and overall atmosphere - well paced and well executed narrative for the main story as well as side missions cons:- - poor AI both enemies and NPC's in the street that feels very outdated - poor driving mechanics - weapon customisation initially appears deep but turns out to be essentially meaningless as percs will add little to powerful weapons - confusing menus - too much emphasis on looting - non-existent crime system ie. you can rob people with no repercussions at any time - character customisation is utterly pointless as game is in 1st person all the time apart from driving - no shooting mechanic whilst driving overall a good open world game when playing on next gen or high end PC

Excellent game if you are able to commit yourself to it. This keeps getting better the more you play and explore. Seriously hard to put down and worth getting. Be aware its difficulty will punish you.

Shenmue I & II9
Aug 3, 2021
An excellent game that plays well on PS4, the only downside for this remaster being the poor audio quality on the voice acting. Shenmue was one of my favourite games on the dreamcast, with incredible atmosphere and an amazing attention to detail at the time. This game thrives by making you pay attention and engage with the mundane - you will be passing in-game time by playing mini-games and buying collectibles from vending machines. Sound boring? It's not as it feels organic and integrated into the games experience. It may be slow and a little clunky at times, but if one allows oneself to be taken in it results in a game that is hard to put down. An absolute buy if you are feeling nostalgic or want a different type of gaming experience

Mass Effect Legendary Edition7

Its a good remaster - with steady 60fps, worked over environment, sound, and dialogue. The gameplay, however, is very dated and I am sorry to say that playing this now only shows how shallow the gameplay at the time of original release actually was - this applies in particular to ME2 and ME3, as the first game is far deeper and still a genuine RPG experience. Overall only worth it if you are a hardcore fan or want to play this for the story.

Great atmosphere and gameplay mechanics, which are unfortunately let down by very poor AI and some awful voice acting... human enemies don't spot you even on higher difficulty, don't find cover, and just call you a **** over and over again in a ridiculous fake Russian accent... It's a shame when you repeatedly encounter unintentionally funny moments when playing an otherwise good game with a very dark storyline. This could have been an incredible experience on par with the last of us if these components were properly ironed out... what a shame

Beautiful graphics, great artwork, good story, and some fun exploration gameplay... why 8? Very shoddy camera in particular when in combat - its frustrating when you lose battles because you cant see what you are fighting (especially indoors), poor AI, and lazy stealth mechanics. The Last of Us Part II8
Jun 23, 2020
An impressive technical achievement that still manages to deliver effective and simple, yet arguably dated gameplay, with a story that shows moments of brilliance, yet is overall marred by poor writing that feels contrived, forced, self indulgent, and overly moralistic. pros: - excellent graphics - incredible environments to explore - dated, yet IMO still effective gameplay - an extension of TLOU's tense resource scarce combat and exploration - some very good story moments (in particular the flashbacks) that will make TLOU fans nostalgic - the game is arguably worth playing for these alone. - The game tries to do something very daring in its story, which is a good thing. As is the inclusion of new characters who are openly transgender (no, not Abby, but another new character), and who do grow close to you as the game progresses. negative: - very badly told story with a ton of "WTF, why did they just do that?" moments that are obviously out of place, are unintentionally funny, and appear to be included solely as a means to get the story moving - some unlikeable new characters that give nothing new to TLOU universe - The game attempts to make a player question the point of violence, yet does this by never giving you a choice in key moments, and makes the possibility for complete stealth gameplay (no kills) virtually impossible (eg. in order to fully explore an environment and gather resources you will have to kill all enemies, otherwise full exploration is near impossible. The game thus forces you to play in a certain way otherwise you will either not progress, or will miss half of its contents - significantly, this is not due to difficulty, but rather a failure in game design). On the whole if the story writing and screenplay had been better the structure of this game could have really paid off... I found the idea of having a main character killed off early, and playing a part of the game as the antagonist, actually quite good - it is just how this is done, who these people are, and what they do that makes you laugh due to the cringe, which is an unintentional outcome of the poor writing. It gets an 8 due to the fun gameplay, incredible environments, great voice acting, and graphics... having finished the game it did manage to leave a profound effect, as the overall experience was still enjoyable despite the serious pacing and storytelling issues.

Control6
Apr 1, 2020
Good third person overpowered action mechanic gameplay - think the force unleashed but more polished in terms of controls and overall presentation. Why 6? a truly terrible level design leading to you getting lost/uncertain about objectives every 10-15 minutes due to repetitive areas, and a convoluted, obtuse story that tries to appear overly intricate and deep, but simply appears as frustrating to get into as the game makes absolutely no effort to entice you in its lore. furthermore, despite occasional moments of suspense and horror, the overall effectiveness of these moments when they arise is muted due to the way the game is set out: you walk into a new area, you can already see a red mist indicating combat is about to happen, and around you, you will already see highlighted items that you can interact with (think items to use force pull/push) - all this before you activate a brief cutscene to trigger a boss fight or battle with various enemies. IMO not worth it.

Excellent point and click game! Having grown up reading Sherlock Holmes and watching various TV adaptations (Jeremy Brett being the undisputed best Holmes) I can confirm this game takes a lot of care in doing the character justice. Death Stranding9
Dec 8, 2019
Kojima here has managed to create a game in which the journey itself is meaningful, and you come to largely rely on asymetrical multiplayer components to progress your game. Yes, it is self indulgent and Kojima is most likely a bit of a pervert and misogynist - his depiction of women is overly objectifying and in parts degrading, but if you can bare/ignore this, then death stranding will serve you as a unique experience in terms of gameplay. thats all I can say after 25h in - I am hooked. Definitely not for everyone.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order7
Nov 21, 2019
Good gameplay mechanics - satisfying combat in particular where some battles can feel like an achievement once overcome, with a resting function that respawns all enemies which adds a tactical component to gameplay, as well as a relatively good story make this at its core a decent star wars game. Why 7? - poor level design. you will genuinely struggle to know where you are meant to be going - this becomes a particular problem once you're about half way through the game and you return to earlier areas but with new objectives - the planets are surprisingly large areas, but are very convoluted and it is not always clear how to approach your next objective. - the save mechanics can be frustrating as they will at times result in you re-spawning far away from where you died, with all enemies returning. there is no automatic save, you have to use meditation points in order to save progress - terrible FPS drops to the point where you lose boss battles because you literally cannot see what is happening when game temporarily drops to 10fps for 2 seconds. - art work makes characters look like mass effect andromeda... - only a limited amount of force abilities meaning there is no lightning, Jedi mind trick, or force choke in the game. Yes you play as a Jedi on the light side, but its still lazy not to add these let's be honest. overall this cant be higher than a 7 on PS4 given the terrible FPS drops and some frustrating aspects to the gameplay... at present it is unplayable in some sections due to FPS drops, and the only way to progress is either being lucky or changing the difficulty to story mode.

Red Dead Redemption 210
Oct 29, 2018
This game is an incredible experience if one allows oneself to give in to it - my advice upfront is not to play this whilst rotating other games, but to commit oneself to it. Don't pay attention to critics who say the controls are clunky and minor details are a chore - controls take time to get used to, but once figured out they become intuitive whereby basic actions like drinking coffee, loading your horse saddle with items, drawing from your saddle when dismounting etc. becomes all second nature to your control of Arthur. The atmosphere achieved in this game, made possible by the graphics engine, voice acting, musical score, and sheer level of detail in the open world is unlike anything I have seen before. It might be boring for some who want an action based game, but for those who want a deep, atmospheric experience, and who can allow themselves to be patient in learning and reading up the basics will be highly rewarded. If you give it a go play with the mobile/tablet app alongside - put the map on this whilst turning on only the compass ingame - creates an even better experience imo.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider9
Oct 15, 2018
I dont get the mediocre/negative reviews for this game! I have played the original tomb raider games as a teenager, and enjoyed the first 2 origin games by square-enix (the first being the best) Play shadow of the tomb raider with hard exploration difficulty and you will have a genuinely satisfying tomb raiding experience, wherein in this final instalment tombs and crypts appear for a change well concealed and isolated from the rest of the map - sometimes also guarded by enemies. On hard exploration setting any clues and obvious white trail marks are switched off, meaning you will have to genuinely explore your surroundings in order to progress. The puzzles are also satisfying - they will take you by and large a few minutes to work out - not as obvious and patronisingly simple as say "uncharted" game puzzles. On hard puzzle difficulty verbal hints will not be given at all, adding a challenge on first playthrough. Combat is a bit annoying as enemies will spot you easily and have very good aim - to counter this set the combat difficulty to easy if you get frustrated. The other downside to combat is that due to the newly introduced stealth mechanic the game unfortunately forces you to play in this style, not really allowing you to go about a combat section in your own preferred way. I agree with some commentators on the lacklustre story presentation - for example indigenous, non-contacted people speaking perfect english + merchants in their village selling modern weapons (makes no sense whatsoever...) Despite its shortcomings in some areas this is still a great game... not perfect, but very good.

Marvel's Spider-Man9
Sep 14, 2018
Very good game! Its more an 8.7 than straight 9. - good story (it takes a little time to develop though) - swinging/parkour mechanics are excellent - developers absolutely nailed this. - combat is fun (at first confusing, but with time one can chain precise combos - it requires a bit of skill to stay undamaged adding challenge) - great attention to detail - anyone who is a spiderman fan should check this out - lots of suits, easter-eggs etc. Downsides? - MJ's stealth sections are tiring (not difficult, just unnecessary) - open world is a little shallow - repetitive NPC's, no natural day/night cycle (mission specific and require loading screens). It is nowhere near as deep as GTAV for instance. - puzzles are too frequent and too easy (can be skipped thank god) Overall well worth a buy if you like spiderman and/or liked the Arkham games

No Man's Sky8
Jul 30, 2018
I bought this on sale for £15 a day after the NMS next update came out, having never played the game prior to this - At the initial game launch I waited for reviews to come out, hence made the decision to pass it at the time. I would have been very annoyed had I paid £50 for a half finished game with loads of promised content missing... The NEXT version of NMS is pretty amazing for someone who has never played it before! The look of the game, the retro 1950's inspired art work, the sound, and the sheer scale make this a special experience. I am a casual gamer, not being interested in the deeper aspects of mining and gathering essential items, but I can see that here there is a lot to do here... If your'e like me go for the creative mode, which is a god mode allowing you to explore freely with no need to harvest raw materials etc. Why 8? It is confusing at times, being unclear what your actual objectives are, and secondly the frame-rate at certain points drops so low that is for a few moments unplayable... Definitely worth a shot if on discount.

Fantastic wolfenstein game - great graphics, gameplay, and story with clever humor. Amazing graphics, good FPS gun gameplay, and plenty to do here. Unfortunately the AI as well as a predictable, and shallow story let this down... This could have been an amazing piece of satirical social commentary as the trailers had nuanced to this. Sadly though, it is nothing more than a well presented and certainly playable FPS game that feels shallow and repetitive after a few hours in... I deleted it after about 60% complete - its just boring and empty.

Good but not a 10 game. Reviews are hyping this too much... Give it a try before you buy. The tomb raider reboots and the last of us are better gaming experiences. Pros: - Great graphics (apart from water effects, these look terrible - I say that as someone who is not a graphics fetishist) - Great voice acting - Good atmosphere and overall storytelling - Decent initial gameplay mechanics - there is an "immersive mode" that turns off health bars and HUD, creating a more intense experience Negatives: - Repetitive combat that feels forced at times - in particular QTE which spoil the feel of it - Too linear - locked at 30fps - the menus have tiny writing which cannot be customised - map looks sloppy, reminds me of mass effect andromeda - water effects look like first half life - feels too much like the last of us set in pre-christian Scandinavia

This is an amazing game! A review somewhere describes it as a sandbox in which you can go about solving a puzzle in more or less whatever way you want... thats exactly what it is in my experience. it can be pretty easy or difficult, depending how you prepare for a situation (or not). UDPATE on review: I wont change score from my initial "0", which is in response to lotobox fiasco. That being said though... once you get a few decent star cards and are around level 12+ this game becomes genuinely quite good. It is unbalanced at times, but it does an amazing job at being a real star wars experience. In contrast to the first BF the classes here feel very different to each other, with each requiring their own playstyle. Lightsaber combat could be improved... Also, to anyone complaining of not ever getting to play as a hero... just play the objectives and you will be paying as yoda or darth vader sooner than you think. If it weren't for the lootbox nonsense and EA trying to take advantage of kids with credit cards this would be a solid 8.

After 9 and a half hours in I can safely say that this is at its core a decent role playing game offering a considerable amount of content with an engaging story, but it simply falls short by being an unpolished mess. It is glitchy, and the controls, particularly in tight areas are pretty shoddy - to the point where it is in parts unplayable. As a fan of the ME trilogy i had to pick this up on day one, and approached it with an open mind - it is not as bad as some say, but it should never have been released in this state. Future patches wont make up for this... EA should be ashamed. The combat system is deep, more than in the original trilogy, and the story is good too. Would have been a solid game if it were finished.

Feb 27, 2017
This is an excellent FPS game both in single player and MP. I finished the campaign feeling very satisfied, and spent a long time in multi-player. Part of why this is a 10/10 is because respawn have stated that all further content is free of charge, so no pay-to-win DLC. This is how developers should be doing it....

Star Wars Battlefront6
Feb 27, 2017
I initially gave this a 4 given how little content the base game has... If you get this including season pass on an offer for £20-25 it is, however, actually fairly good. I have now been playing around 9 hours after I forced myself to get into it, and am now at level 13. I can safely say SW:BF gets better once you have a few item unlocks, when you know the maps, and when you can distinguish the good from the bad modes - walker assault for instance is pretty amazing once you know what you have to do. It is still basic shallow pew-pew shooting but it pulls you in, especially the endor map. Hero hunt on the other hand is a load of BS, avoid this... Mediocre/potentially fun modes are cargo (CTF equivalent) and fighter squadron... the latter can be fun to jump into every now and again, but it is frustrating how barren the gameplay is at times. Overall this game has grown on me over the past few days, and anyone who is a serious star wars fan should give it a go. It is, however, nothing more than a shallow 3rd person/fps game that could have been so much more... if only DICE had added classes and a single player campaign... Buy only when on offer.

The Last of Us Remastered10
Feb 24, 2017
Ok this is actually a 9.7/10 game - not a straight 10. Why? Everything is near perfect apart from the fact that the gameplay is a little uninspired, in particular the combat - this part of The Last Of Us isn't really anything special in my opinion. When playing Left behind (which I rate as a 10/10) the shortcomings of the main game become apparent - in LB Ellie has the possibility to get by human enemies by having her direct clickers onto them, which is a pretty good mechanic that enriches the combat gameplay by that little bit more... The main campaign of TLOU, however, misses this feature. Other than that I won't go much into why it is so good as you have already heard it somewhere else. This game is amazing.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain6
Feb 24, 2017
TPP looks amazing and offers a vast game map that within the first few hours of play will make your jaw drop. The mechanics are also pretty spot on, with everything running smooth and appearing very slick. After some time, say 15-20 hours in, you realise how stale the game map is and how repetitive the missions are. Added to this the character and story development is laughable compared to other MGS titles. I gave up after the Nth infiltrate and rescue mission. Just boring... Will be selling it on Ebay to some poor fool.

This is a near perfect GTA game - go see other reviews to find out why it is so good. Graphics + sound - 10/10 Story - 10/10 Gameplay - 10/10 It gets a 9 from me for one reason only - because the map is entirely unlocked from the very beginning of the game. In previous GTA titles the gradual unlocking of an area led to a continuous feeling of increasing scale within the game. This is missing here...

PHOAW! I got this on sale on PSN for £9.99 including all DLC - anyone who likes horror games or is into the Alien franchise should give this a go. It is brilliant! The atmosphere, the sound, the tension, and the possibility of multiple styles of play (use distractions or choose full stealth) in a game that tests your patience is why this is a real gem. It misses out on 10/10 due to pacing issues - it drags when about 50% through.
