ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights5
May 20, 2024
The soulslike combat is great but theres something very off about the metroidvania side of things. I cant quite put my finger on it but its something to do with the map and the fact that they commit a metroidvania sin where its technically open world but they funnel you into an exact location at every single stage of the game to continue. I think its just easier to understand once you've play the game yourself but the pixel hunting and clean up is noticeably more annoying in this game than any other metroidvania I have played. Even the progression of the main game itself suffers greatly with how they have handled the map progression

A solid title and a great new direction for the series. LAD proves that turn based combat still works and also that developers going for a more consistent approach to their combat even if its more boring is better than really janky action combat.

It saddens my that the early dragon engine games like this game and Yakuza 6 are my favourites when looking at the overall package but always manage to completely bungle the last 10% or so of their stories. Im glad the director for Yakuza has changed. Now we have more meaningful and consistent stories while retaining the great and goofy substories that make Yakuza games fun

Its very saddening to me that this is still the definitive way to play FF7. If only SE hadnt gotten greedy with the remakes and made poor story changes that are purely there to justify 3 stand alone titles and the compilation. We will never have the remake this game truly deserves

May 20, 2024
The definitive version of P3 in my opinion and I realise that is a big claim. Frankly I've never felt the FEMC route was that important or added that much in P3P and reload is basically an updated version of P3FES. The only thing I will nitpick about is that the direction at the very last month and for the very last scene seems different to the original ending which I think is not as good but it is a very minor change. Its not something ridiculous like FF7 Remake/Rebirth

Not perfect and honestly a little pricey for what it is (Really? $125??). However it is an extremely fun game. Its like they took away all the annoying and pretentious stuff from games like Lies of P and Nier Automata and condensed all the good stuff from those games into one single game. Definitely worth a playthrough. If you like souls-likes, action rpgs or action hack and slash games, this game has something in it you will enjoy.

Yakuza Kiwami7
Feb 2, 2024
Its no wonder such a famous game is only 80 on Metacritic. The car chase sequence on legend, climax battles, Harukas requests and completion lists (involving skewed RNG gambling) has to have come from the mind of someone who despises gamers themselves. Yakuza Kiwami is a game that does not respect the players time. The guy who made these sequences should get a different job then. Its telling that once the completely janky combat got changed and the horrendous completion lists got removed, the future titles were more well received by both the fanbase and the general public. Turns out you dont need to make janky artificially difficult sequences to make a good game. Who knew?

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth10

Day one DLC (with achievements) and locking basic features in previous games behind them is definitely scummy. Shame on RGG and SEGA for resorting to this, especially for such a high profile game. However the game itself is fantastic. Its gives a fitting closure to Kiryus arc and passes the torch to Ichiban (something that was supposed to happen in Y7 but didnt really happen). I am also not sure why the NG+ is such a big deal at this stage given that its been 6 days since the game came out and its unlikely anyone who finished such a long game wanted to jump straight into NG+. Every Yakuza game I have played, I have had a considerable gap between finishing the game and doing the clean up (which ranges from okay to completely cancerous) and this game is no exception. Even if they really wanted to jump into NG+, theres still premium adventure which is still part of the game to jump into first.... So I am not convinced all of these 0s actually come from people who played the game or just sideliners mad at YGG, or even shills for other games (P3R and FF7 Rebirth) trying to review bomb the competition

The atmosphere was definitely done correctly but my god is there a lot of jank in this game. Bosses disappearing mid fight so you have to reset. Hardening not working. Mobs not spawning in until they have already shot their arrows at you. Mobs not spawning in until you walk past the spot where they usually are and then spawning in behind you. The list goes on. And what do Playstack do? They introduce patches that only patch out the speedrunner strats. Why? It wouldnt be so bad if the boss fights were at least fun after the slog of going through the janky world. But no. Two of the four main bosses have about 3 moves only and the other 2 are gimmick fights. Not worth checking out unless you are really into the souls-like genre, if even then.

Even for a souls-like this one feels particularly meanspirited. A gowing trend where lesser studios try to capture fromsofts magic but focus on difficulty and making the player feel miserable instead of an immersive experience. This is the game that likes to bait you. Almost every single boss has these attack chains with these long gaps or an animation that looks like they are done where they encourage you to swing only for the boss to do another move to catch you. It was amusing for the first boss. Its not so amusing 10 bosses on. The core mechanics are a bit fuzzy and dont always work the way the tutorial tells you they do. Exploration and secrets are nearly non-existent. Unlike Fromsoft games where every bit of background could hold a secret entry, in this game, backgrounds are just backgrounds It may be more polished than something like Mortal Shell but its no Fromsoft masterpiece

Final Fantasy VII Remake0
Aug 20, 2023
For the newcomers, I can see the game being mind-boggling and beautiful enough to warrant a high score. However, for the fans of the original, this entry falls short of the 1997 original. Straight off the bat, I knew that it wasn't going to be the whole game. However, what I didn't know, was how disappointing exploring Midgar would be. Some of the side quests boil down to: Find 3 chocobos that you have to traverse the entire world map for in chapter 14. The world map itself is essentially a long straight linear line with some offshoots to dungeons making it a series of Y-shaped corridors. The quality of the side quests simply doesn't justify the game being Midgar only. Sequences in the original game have been stretched to 30 minutes so you spend more time with your favorite characters that have been brought to life, instead of actually having something meaningful develop plotwise. Once the nostalgia wears off and you replay it, all of these little moments that were good on the first go, fall short and you just want to get it over with as soon as possible so you can go find that missing item/quest. Then there is the ending. This is an ending that is so disconnected with the tone of the rest of the remake and the original that I can't even begin to describe the drop in the enjoyment you get going from chapters 17 to 18. This ending fills older fans with worry and confuses newer players. SE either put this in just to get older fans talking (and will loop back to the events of the original just so they can "surprise" the older fans) or they have just majorly changed it for whatever reason. Either way, it's a shocking drop in storywriting and enjoyment compared to the rest of the game. Not only does the story become strange here. The characters they have lovingly built up in the first 35 hours completely change personalities. Aerith becomes a cryptic nonsense spewing prophet and the other characters just accept it and walk into the portal that pops up for the final boss just like that. Suddenly, even though this doesn't fit how shes portrayed in the rest of the game at all, Tifa says she's willing to defy destiny. Cloud doesn't say anything. Barrett, despite just being saved by fate, also agrees to spit in its face. Whether the change itself was good or not, I just cannot believe how badly they messed up the execution. I don't see how they will build up anything for part 2 anymore. The sephiroth and Aerith in this game are beings who can open dimensional portals like gods at this point of the story already. Our main cast of characters have already fought a literal manifestation of fate. Imagine going from that to the Midgar Zolom in game 2... Once I reached this ending and replayed the game on chapter select, because of how much of a bad taste the ending left in my mouth, all of the other issues with the games snail-like pacing in some areas become noticeable and I realized that this game was not justified in being Midgar only. I am now also fearful of how many sections they will release it in and how expanding it and adding filler willl lessen the impact of the special moments in the original. This absolutely horrendous experience is made even worse by the attitudes of the fanboys on the subs and forums discussing this game where any criticism is met with trolling or straw man arguments. Shame on Square-Enix for turning the Final Fantasy Franchise into a joke and shame on the people who support this direction

A good game, and signs of life for the FF series. In the future Im sure its going in the right direction. However there is just simply something missing from FF16 that the old games had. An emotional catalyst or hook thats missing in FF16. As polished and full of great spectacle as FF16 is it fails to reach the heights set by its predecessors. Also the ending is pointlessly ambiguous and serves to generate more discussion at the cost of story cohesion. Not a huge fan of this move.
