They should rename this one to "Frown" because that's what watching dreck makes people do rather than smile.

Frightening enough. Unpleasant feeling. Good acting. Two extremely dislikeable characters which add an extra sense of helplessness to this.

One of the few recent horror movies that provides a sustained eerie atmosphere and well-maintained progression of both story and scares.

It's a good horror story. You sympathize with the main character. She lived a normal life and helped mentally ill patients, and she didn't deserve these horrors. The motivations of all the characters and their emotions were understandable. I feel sorry for them.

Smile is a disorienting, anxiety-inducing nightmare that leaves you questioning everything you see. The scares feel over-abundant at first, with feints and fake-outs almost laughably frequent, but they eventually create a creeping paranoia that nothing is quite as it seems. The scares are utterly terrifying at times, and Sosie Bacon plays the troubled Dr. Cotter with a deft hand, exploring difficult subjects of mental health stigma while fighting back the hysterics. Right from the start, Smile gets under your skin. It may borrow from plenty of other horror tales, but director Parker Finn still manages to do a few fresh things with these well-worn tropes.

It’s an attempt at psychological horror that falls far short of its goal. The movie leans on jump-scare clichés and predictable situations, making it dull and completely devoid of real surprises. Although it tries to build an unsettling atmosphere, both the characters and the situations lack depth, and the scenes drag on without delivering the intended effect. With excellent cinematography and grizzly effects, Smile is a terrifying and unpredictable film that keeps the audience on their toes…with a smile on their faces.

Smile was a good movie. I finally watched it for the first time after so long. I love the mental health aspect with the horror of it because mental health is so important. I wouldn’t necessarily say it had a lot of gore but it did have some jump scares scenes.I would definitely recommend this movie for a watch.

I didn’t know what to expect from this, I had only seen the poster and knew nothing of the content. The setup of the story is excellent. What also struck me right from the start was that the cinematography was over-engineered, it looked robotic and too clean and there was an ugly vignette for much of the film. The acting is mostly excellent, sometimes a little too drama school from the younger cast members. I disagree with some of the casting, Judy Reyes feels like she should be in a comedy, Jessie T. Usher needs an injection of personality and Kal Penn’s role should have been given to anyone else - I can’t think of a worse miscast. Since I’m focussing on the negative then I’ll add that it feels heavily inspired by It Follows (2014). I didn’t like the demon voice from the therapist, her normal voice would have been creepier. There was no need for some of the shots to be upside down. Finally for the negatives I occasionally found it formulaic and predictable like after a shocking event cutting ahead in time and skipping the aftermath. Overall though most of this is easy to ignore and you get a consistently engaging, creepy and really quite shocking film with a really unsettling vibe. It’s very gory in a good way. Also it gets a bonus point for some great jump scares and eerie ambience. There are so many good set-pieces in this film.

A really cool horror. It sounds nice, looks nice and builds tension quite well. But it would probably be even better if the trailer didn't show me 80% of the movie.

The film takes off right out of your mind. Smile generates fear through eerie grins and constructing dread. We’re shown Dr. Rose Cotter seeing one of her strange suicides; next, she’s seeing things, stalking, grinning, ubiquitous. The tension is mounted up; her terror is palpable. The scares have bigger impacts than anticipated. Some of them are predictable, but atmosphere maintains them effective. The plot is well-sequenced; it’s engaging but falls on well-established horrors cliches. The plot is engaging although twists are **** fear of Smile lingers after post-credits, its fear lingering within your mind. It is adhering to a formula but gets executed well. Recommended to fans of psychological horrors that have jump scares. 7 out of 10

With a chilling sound design, horrifying concept, plus a desperate feeling to dig down the backstory of the smile curse equals a watchable and good movie.

Very interesting plot executed amazingly, however the only real things that scared me where the different jump scares. The music really helped make it more scary and intense. Would definitely recommend any horror film fan to go and see this.

really liked it this time around especially after watching smile 2. i never noticed the really interesting sound design and colour palette. not as many upside down shots tho. the ending annoyed me when i first watched but the creature design is something special the way it’s fully practical too. mustache innocent!

I waited a while before sitting down to watch Smile. The initial stills and trailer were certainly disturbing and intriguing, but unfortunately, I just could not find the time. Having just now watched the movie in preparation for its sequel, I’m surprised by the depth of the themes it tackles. The main character, Rose, experiences deep trauma in her past, works with people facing trauma daily, and never receives full support for the scars her own trauma leaves behind. She’s expected to perform, smile, and be polite and pretty. As things begin to fall apart when she encounters the demonic entity, the film reveals that it’s not just dealing with the supernatural—it’s addressing real societal pressures we all face. I can’t help but connect this to the countless times I, as a woman, have been told to smile by strangers on the street, as though I should always have a smile on my face. The jump scares and practical effects in Smile are incredibly engaging, with the body horror being particularly disturbing. Although I wasn’t completely satisfied with the ending, I still enjoyed the overall experience of watching the film. There’s a pivotal scene between Rose and her sister that I wish had lingered longer, as it holds the most weight for the film’s core message. I worry that many viewers might miss this important moment because the scene moves so quickly. Despite this, Smile delivers a powerful commentary on trauma and societal expectations, making it a standout in its genre.

It's like a mix of IT FOLLOWS and THE BABADOOK, but in a good/entertaining way? The smile concept is creepy, I liked that the film takes its time to build the story, there are no cheap jump scares, and the kills are gruesome. I loved the birthday scene, best scene of the movie! Really liked the whole trauma aspect, although the ending felt kinda stupid. Solid creepy watch!

The camera shots in the film are quite impressive, capturing beautiful scenery and angles. I enjoyed the story and the unique ideas. However, the reliance on jump scares took away some of the enjoyment for me. I prefer to be frightened by the storyline, with occasional surprising jump scares enhancing the overall experience. Unfortunately, as the movie progressed, it became apparent that every scary moment was accompanied by a jump scare, making it more annoying than enjoyable. I still recommend this movie it was a fun watch!

Smile is like It Follows version 2.0. Same idea, different process. It has some cliche moves, yet the camera, suspense, and acting are amazing. Blending those with music also enhances the thrill. And the Hannah Grace ending was beautiful.

Cheap jumpscares but good setup and idiotic characters

Smile's biggest draw is its poster; showing a girl smiling maniacally. That is literally the scariest aspect of this over rated flick. Sure there are some shock moments and gore, with jump scares a plenty, but the whole film was actually derivative of so many better horror flicks that you can see the so called twists miles away.

Ok movie to watch with friends. Yeah, I know the horror genre doesn't benefit from watching it with friends, but since this film isn't one of those that make me feel scared, that's not a huge thing to consider. I'm not encouraging prejudice, though. Smile feels bizarre sometimes, but that's it. Somehow, in some scenes, I actually got goose pimples. But unfortunately, the full potential it had was not reached. I believe true psychological horror movies have something in common: never-ending suspense. It's like, they develop the trama with horror elements and when you think the plot is gonna blow, they keep introducing **** at us. Hereditary is the perfect example of this. No need for dumb jump-scares, gore exaggeration, or bizarre CGI monsters. Our mind does this job when the trama itself is crazy enough. Jaws proved it. Here, not even one jump scare works for me. The smiling scenes are only bizarre due to the uncanny valley. Gore itself is not enough when you don't care about the person getting stabbed. Also, the worst thing about this movie is the plot. If you watched If Follows, you get it fast asf. The only thing different is the message. I know, watching it with friends is not fair to this film, but it is what it is. At least, I got curious about the ending and it caught my attention.

One of the few horror films that stand out in the bad film year 2022. Great story with very good actors. The story packs in and doesn't let you go until the end. The interesting soundtrack is worth mentioning here. The CGI's are in the upper field, the arc of suspense is present from the beginning and increases to its climax at the end of the film. Worth watching the movie.

I'm going to be very harsh here because nobody else seems to be. You're telling me this is better than Hellraiser 2022? This??? This is the most generic, cynical, joyless and frankly flaccid horror movie of this decade. I doubt it'll be topped. It's horror movie bingo. Trauma subtext? Check. Cheap jumpscares? Check. Fake out ending? Check. Every **** scene is so predictable it just grated on my nerves. Even the concept is uninspired. I get it, horror perverts the familiar but smiling is not scary. In real life I'm sure it'd be offputting but here it just does not work. There are no stakes. I laughed more at it than jumped. Some moments here and there were decent, but the movie takes itself deathly seriously to diminishing returns. I like popcorn horror but this is kernel horror. Watch literally any of this movie's inspirations and you'll get more out of the experience. It feels like a 14 year old wrote this movie.

this movie is in the most basic scheme a copy of the movie "the ring (the USA version)", but is a good movie, have a good effects, good actors, you can have a good time watching this

Best horror movie I ve seen in years, despite the **** ending. The Ring meets It Follows. The girls acting in the "opening" scene is so good it dragged me in, it set up the movie so well, the whole thing was hugely immersive. Music and sound desing is also great, good casting overall.

Like Barbarian, this was undersold for how scary it actually is. The premise doesn't break any new ground, but the jump scares are used effectively and the performance from the lead who I just learned is Kevin Bacon's daughter is enough to put this above an otherwise average mainstream horror movie.
