At its core, the film’s heartfelt theme of acceptance resonates deeply, while the witty, effortlessly funny dialogue keeps the energy alive throughout. The second standout triumph of this reboot is its animation style. In an era where innovative animation has become the norm, Mutant Mayhem not only meets expectations but exceeds them. Bursting with energy and brimming with vibrant colors, the visual design is as bold and colourful as the story itself, making it an absolute delight to watch. The voice acting here is splendid. The ensemble cast of Seth Rogen, John Cena, Maya Rudolph, Ice Cube, Paul Rudd, Ayo Edebiri, Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon all deliver wonderful voice performances. The last slam dunk Mutant Mayhem hits is its outstanding soundtrack, which exceeds all expectations. The original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross seamlessly enhances the film’s visuals. This is further elevated by the inclusion of licensed classic hip-hop tracks, with Blackstreet's "No Diggity" standing out as a memorable highlight. Together, the music choices bring energy and nostalgia that perfectly complement the film's tone. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a thoroughly enjoyable reintroduction to the mutants and it wonderfully sets the stage for its sequel. 8-8.5/10

Emilia Perez Emilia Perez is a bonkers and audacious story of identity and transformation. With its vibrant vision and daring story, the film showcases a director brimming with confidence in their craft. But does it ultimately deliver on its ambitious promise? In this film, a Mexican cartel leader, Manitas, seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita, to facilitate not only a gender transition but also a complete disappearance. Tasked with managing the estate left behind for his family, Rita ensures the plan goes off without a hitch. Years later, now living as Emilia Perez, the former kingpin hatches a bold scheme to reconnect with her family. Emilia Perez is an ambitious, chaotic ride that doesn't always hit the mark. The film's relentless drive to distinguish itself as unique often overshadows the core story, leaving it feeling somewhat diluted. However, its saving grace lies in its musical elements, which inject a vibrant energy into an otherwise tame story. While the musical numbers are far from flawless—occasionally rough, awkward, or even embarrassingly laughable—they embody the quirky, audacious spirit that defines Emilia Perez. These moments, imperfect as they are, are what make the film memorable. Emilia, as a character, lacks the bite one might expect given her tumultuous past. While it’s clear that her transformation signifies a fresh start, the notion of a complete reinvention feels implausible. Someone with her history would carry remnants of their former life, and this disconnect makes her portrayal feel incomplete. Furthermore, Emilia's journey seems oddly unchallenged. No one questions her identity, nor do her altruistic actions raise any suspicion—an oversight that feels unrealistic in the high-stakes world she inhabits. These gaps undermine the complexity of her character and the believability of her story. The film’s style is beautifully complemented by its cinematography. The clever use of camera angles perfectly aligns with the movie’s rambunctious nature. This visual approach not only enhances the storytelling but also matches the film’s chaotic charm. The performances in Emilia Perez are solid. Zoe Saldana is a standout, delivering a revelatory performance as she seamlessly sings, raps, dances, and acts her way through the role with brilliance. Zoe doesn't play the titular character but it's as much her story as it is Emilia's— in fact, she has the most screentime. Karla Sofia Gascón serves as the emotional core of the film, embodying both facets of her character. Meanwhile, Selena Gomez, though competent, is unfortunately overshadowed by her co-stars. Her character’s limitations prevent her from fully stepping into the spotlight, leaving her underutilized in the grander scheme of the narrative. It's a musical, a comedy, a drama, a thriller... It's Emilia Perez. 7/10

Anora takes you on a thrilling ride from start to finish. While the story itself isn’t entirely new, the execution is fresh and utterly gripping. It’s a tale **** determined to cling to her newfound fortune, despite having no idea how to keep it, as it slips further and further out of her grasp. It’s a meet-cute born from the worst circumstances, yet one you won’t soon forget. It’s raw, unexpected, and brimming with a sleazy charm that feels all too real. Best of all, it’s laced with sharp, clever humor that keeps you hooked. Anora is a class commentary. It’s about how the wealthy navigate relationships with those in lower tax brackets, treating them like pawns to be used and discarded, and how the poor willingly let it happen for proximity, convenience or class change. It's how the poor battle one another for the rich that don't care about them. It's about how Anora, Igor, Toros and Garnik parade the city to find a rich boy that's living his life—waiting to be swept away when they find him. But when the curtain is let down, it wraps up bittersweet—a sorrowful but hopeful resolution with a profoundly beautiful finish. It’s the kind of ending that compels you to rewatch the movie, knowing it’s worth every moment. To say that Anora rides on the back of Mikey Madison would be an understatement, as she delivers an impassioned performance that's spellbinding. But Anora isn't just about Mikey Madison; it's equally defined by the performances of Mark Eydelshteyn, Anton Bitter, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan, with special praise going to no one because they all deliver the absolute best. The story, performances, score, editing are all tied together by Sean Baker's deft direction. The seamless way he moves between the sections of the movie with their different tones whilst maintaining a balanced pacing is remarkable. Anora provides a story that feels like it's still unfolding just beyond the screen. It’s not a film that begs for your approval, but one that demands your reflection. A must watch. 9-9.5/10

The Critic Anchored by Ian McKellan, The Critic tells the story of a harsh but important critic on the verge of being ousted from the industry. In a twist of fate, he enlists an actress he's always berated in a scheme that'll restore his standing with his publisher. The plot here unfolds cleanly for the first half, and the delicious way new elements are introduced to the story are captivating. Albeit, the last quarter becomes rushed as it races to a finish. This may stem from the reshoots done for this part, and while some may argue that the revised finale improves upon the original, the resulting disconnect is undeniable. The performances in this film are remarkable. Ian McKellen embodies the role of a ruthless critic with such finesse that it's impossible not to detest his character. Opposite him, Gemma Arterton shines as an actress desperate for validation. Surprisingly, however, the standout for me was David Brooke, whose restrained portrayal of a 'besotted' man is so nuanced that you can't help but empathize with him. Lesley Manville, Alfred Enoch, and Ben Barnes complete the cast, and are all on top of their game. The themes tackled in this film are, for the most part, handled skillfully. It ventures into complacency and the extremes individuals will go to for the sake of their careers. Set against the vivid backdrop of the 1930s, elements of sexuality and racism are thoughtfully woven onto the plot. These societal undercurrents help its exploration of human ambition. Although the pacing occasionally falters and certain plot points demand a suspension of disbelief, the film's magnetic pull remains intact. 8/10

Deadpool And Wolverine In the third Deadpool movie, Deadpool joins forces with a reluctant Wolverine to protect his universe from erasure by the Time Variance Authority. Reviving Wolverine after the character's reverent farewell might seem like a risky, fan-service-driven move. However, this sequel finds a fun way to deliver this while being as respectful as possible. As Deadpool officially enters the MCU, his character—complete with all his explicit humor and edginess—is fully embraced. Thankfully, he isn’t toned down to fit the typical MCU style, which makes his arrival true to form. As with every Deadpool movie, the success rests squarely on the titular character, and Ryan Reynolds undoubtedly blazes on. Hugh Jackman also slips effortlessly into the mix, and the chemistry between the two actors is electric, fueling the film's buddy-comedy energy to perfection. The plot isn't the tightest, isn't the most polished and plotholes exist but who cares when it's all so fun. It's pure escapist entertainment that fully delivers on its promise. The action is delicious. The dialogues are dirty, witty and packed with references— exactly what audiences want from a Deadpool movie. The soundtrack is another element that deserves praise. From an NSYNC assisted opener to a climax blown with Madonna's Like A Prayer, the soundtrack is an overflowing treat. Deadpool and Wolverine isn’t just a movie for MCU fans; it’s a heartfelt love letter to those who grew up with FOX’s Marvel films. 8/10

Joker: Folie Á Deux Joker: Folie à Deux brings up plenty of questions, but the biggest may be about how we should approach it. Should we focus solely on what this new installment presents, or should our perspective be shaped by what the first film established? In this sequel, we find Joker, or Arthur Fleck, on trial for the crimes he committed in the first film. Amidst this, he encounters and begins a relationship with fellow inmate, Lee Quinzel. The story unfolds as a tug-of-war between Joker and Arthur, keeping us uncertain about whose perspective—or purpose—the film truly serves. While this approach isn’t without its flaws, it undeniably offers an intriguing twist. Given how the first film concludes, this sequel defies expectations in every way. It’s a bold and polarizing continuation, but that’s precisely its strength. It doesn’t aim to satisfy; instead, it intentionally challenges conventions—even if not always successfully—bringing a distinct character to the story. The film’s self-awareness shines through in moments like Lee’s final rejection of Arthur, which serves as a pointed commentary on the film itself. The film's flaws emerge as it alternates between rushed and dulling sequences; overall, the plot doesn't move forward smoothly and mostly lulls around. The musical elements work half and half, sometimes they're very fitting and during these times are absolute gold, but when they don't fit, it's a distracting earsore. Joaquin Phoenix brings his acting talents from the first movie. With how the previous movie ended this performance feels more subdued but that's exactly fitting with how the story meanders. The contrast between his calmer and more explosive moments is definitely applaudable. Lady Gaga counterbalances Joaquin's performance and although she is a little underused, she still provides a potent performance. Joker: Folie Á Deux isn't about the Joker, it's about Arthur Fleck. Arthur was never the Joker, he was only a man pushed beyond his limits that became a beacon to people. This sequel closes the tragic story of Arthur Fleck, suggesting that the true Joker may be who we see at the end—or anyone willing to take up the mantle. 7/10

The Wild Robot In The Wild Robot, Roz, a service robot, is stranded on a remote island after a shipwreck. With no prior knowledge of survival in the wilderness, she must adapt to her new environment. During her journey, Roz accidentally causes the death **** and takes in the orphaned gosling, Brightbill, becoming his unlikely mother. Together, they form a bond that helps Roz learn the ways of the wild. This animation excels in two key areas: a deeply moving, heartfelt story and a visually stunning animation style. Described by the director as "a Monet painting set in a Miyazaki forest," the art elevates the simplicity of the story into something truly magical. Themes of found family, motherhood, and the feeling of being an outsider are explored with nuance. The voice acting here is superb. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o gives a wonderful performance as Roz, and if the Academy awarded Oscars for voice acting, her portrayal would undoubtedly be a top contender. Pedro Pascal and Kit Connor round out the lead trio perfectly as Fink and Brightbill respectively. The Wild Robot is a family pleaser that'll engage audiences of all ages with an experience that's as emotional as it is visually captivating. 8.5

Woman Of The Hour Woman of the Hour is a crime thriller inspired by the chilling true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala. The film follows a struggling actress who, in a twist of fate, becomes a contestant on the popular TV show The Dating Game. Among the three bachelors vying for her attention is none other than Alcala himself, hiding behind a charming façade as Bachelor Number 3. What begins as a lighthearted game show appearance soon turns into a dangerous encounter, with her unknowingly stepping into the orbit of a notorious killer. Anna Kendrick pulls double duty as both lead actress and director, delivering a tour de force in this thriller. Through the lens of a real-life serial killer case, Kendrick skillfully explores themes of misogyny—both societal and systemic—while capturing the pervasive dread women face. Her direction brings a sharp and unsettling edge to the story. The pacing is expertly crafted, and the seamless switch between timelines builds toward a powerful and satisfying conclusion. What truly stands out is the film's delicate handling of violence. In stories about real-life crimes, there’s often a risk of exploitation, but here the depiction is measured and purposeful, avoiding unnecessary sensationalism. The balance strikes a rare and commendable restraint, allowing the gravity of the subject matter to resonate without crossing into excess. Anna Kendrick and Daniel Zovatto adequately lead this movie, with Daniel's portrayal oozing charm and evil. But the star here is Autumn Best who delivers a beautiful performance as the hero of the movie. Woman of the Hour serves as a stark reminder that behind charm and charisma, unspeakable evil can hide in plain sight. It also sheds light on how society, both in the past and today, can enable predators to thrive. The film explores the unsettling truth of how these individuals slip through the cracks, highlighting the complicity and blind spots that still exist in modern culture. 9/10

The Substance The Substance tells the story of Elizabeth Sparkle, a celebrity at 50 who's about to be washed out of the industry. An accident leads her to get a substance that can make a newer younger version of her. However, there's a catch: both versions of Elizabeth—the seasoned star and her youthful counterpart—can exist, but only one can be active at a time, alternating on a weekly basis. At its core, The Substance delves into the theme of aging. As someone who often reflects on this aspect of life, I find it a fascinating and nuanced exploration. The plot of The Substance is bonkers, fresh, and singular. The bonkers story of The Substance is elevated by its striking visuals. Here, the visuals are raw and obscene, and definitely not for the squeamish. The camera angles transport from jittery sequences to intimate ones, all enhanced by a gripping auditory experience that pulls the viewer deeper into the film's unsettling world. The performances here are nothing short of splendid. Demi Moore anchors The Substance, and she's absolutely perfect in her portrayal. To start, Demi is a bombshell, and seeing the journey she takes in this movie one has to ask, if a character with the build and beauty that Demi possesses goes through this, what hope do the rest of us have? Margaret Qualley matches Demi breath for breath, stride for stride. Dennis Quaid's portrayal of a repulsive, horrible boss is nailed with an almost unnerving ease. For all the praises that The Substance will garner, from the performances to the makeup and the cinematography, the ending is a letdown. Metaphorically, it's poignant and significant, but if we're judging the sequences based on the literal events that occur, the walls begin to crumble. In all, The Substance is a thrilling ride and a grand entry for body horror. 8/10

Inside Out 2 In this exciting sequel, puberty arrives, bringing with it a whirlwind of new emotions.Many will approach this film with one burning question: how will it measure up to its predecessor? This coming-of-age sequel skillfully honors the legacy of the original, weaving in beautiful callbacks while introducing fresh storylines, resulting in a truly captivating continuation. Bing Bong’s sacrifice remains one of the most poignant moments from the original film, and while the filmmakers could have easily retconned his erasure, the tribute paid to his character in this sequel is beautifully done. The adventure the familiar emotions embark on is equally thrilling, with Anger, Disgust, and Fear bringing a dynamic energy to the journey. What truly shines, though, is the increased focus on Riley and her world. Her story is given equal weight to the emotions’ journey, allowing for a richer exploration of the coming-of-age theme. The introduction of new emotions, Riley’s physical changes, and the tough decisions she faces all contribute to this theme, creating a layered story. Although Riley’s parents take a backseat to her developing friendships, the film still touches on the delicate balance parents must strike in guiding a teenager through this turbulent time. Where the first movie centered on Joy learning the importance of Sadness, this sequel dives deep into the impact of Anxiety and the turmoil it creates when it overwhelms. The film also explores the importance of accepting negative experiences and memories as essential to shaping a balanced person. It emphasizes that, no matter how much we try to bury them, these memories will inevitably resurface, and the only way to truly move forward is to face them head-on. Watching Riley spiral further and further was very taut but the conclusion is truly rewarding as she ultimately regains her sense of self, her true self—one that isn't dictated by her meddling emotions. It’s a powerful moment where Riley reconnects with who she truly is. On a technical level, Inside Out 2 excels across the board. The visuals are breathtaking, the score perfectly complements the story, and the voice cast delivers outstanding performances. Newcomers, particularly Ayo Edebiri and Maya Hawke, shine alongside the returning cast, with Hawke’s portrayal of Anxiety standing out as pitch-perfect. Creating a sequel to a masterpiece like Inside Out was always going to be a challenge, but Inside Out 2 rises to the occasion with commendable success. 8.5/10

Nimona I wonder why it's taken me this long to see this animation, especially as an animation lover who thinks animations are one of the best genres of movies. I didn't know what to expect from this movie but I can easily say any expectations I could have had were exceeded. Based on the 2015 graphic novel of the same name, Nimona tells the story of a knight who pairs with a mischievous teen to clear his name after he was framed for killing the queen of his land. Nimona stands out with its originality and exceptional quality, distinguishing it from other recent animations. The characters are well-crafted, and the plot masterfully balances heart and humor. Nimona herself is captivating, but it's her dynamic with Ballister that truly elevates the story. The film thoughtfully explores themes of acceptance, equality, gender identity, and the nature of good and evil, making it profoundly engaging. Despite tackling heavy themes, Nimona never forgets to be wild, comical, and fun. The movie maintains a steady pace with no filler moments, driving the story forward to a memorable finish. I found myself wanting more when it ended and was surprised by how much was packed into its runtime. The seamless pacing is a testament to its solid storytelling. Recent animations often strive for a unique style, and Nimona excels in this regard. The visually stunning medieval-futuristic world it presents, combined with its blend of art styles, makes it feel like a graphic novel brought to life, which is fitting given its origins. The voice cast delivers thrilling performances, but Chloe Grace Moretz deserves especial praise. Her vocal work perfectly aligns with her character and grounds the movie. Additionally, the soundtrack is fitting. Overall, Nimona is a visually captivating and emotionally resonant film that stands out in the animation genre. With its unique art style, strong voice performances, and a compelling blend of humor and heart, it offers a refreshing take on familiar themes. This movie is a must-watch for animation enthusiasts and anyone looking for a story that's both entertaining and thought-provoking. 9/10

All Of Us Strangers "All Of Us Strangers" is a profound exploration of grief and human feelings. The story follows Adam, a lonely screenwriter, who begins a relationship with his neighbor. Meanwhile, Adam also experiences vivid visions in which he reconnects with his deceased parents. The storytelling in "All Of Us Strangers" is brilliant, as it deftly navigates a multitude of themes: loss and grief, sexuality, bullying, missed opportunities, closure, loneliness, mental illness, and depression. The film intertwines a dual narrative of a budding romance and Adam's reconnection with his deceased parents. The love story gradually fosters Adam's healing, helping him confront the long-standing pain of his parents' loss. This relationship symbolizes hope, but the film delivers a gut-wrenching twist that takes it all away. The final sequence is both memorable and poignant, with a touch of beauty in the end shot, despite the surrounding pain. Adam must heal again, find hope anew, or possibly continue living through vivid visions and explorations. This is an intimate film with a small cast, and the performances are outstanding. Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, and Jamie Bell all shine, but it was Claire Foy who left a lasting impression on me. Foy's performance is nothing short of phenomenal, and her scenes with Andrew Scott are the film's highlight. I could have watched the entire movie with just the two of them. Overall, "All Of Us Strangers" is a masterfully crafted film that explores complex emotions and themes with a memorable and heartbreaking conclusion that'll linger long after the credits roll. 8.5/10

Challengers In this movie, a professional tennis champion endeavors to make a comeback, supported by his wife, a former tennis star who retired due to an injury. His primary rival is his former best friend, who also happens to be his wife's ex-boyfriend. With the trio of Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor, Challengers was bound to deliver solid performances, but the main star of this movie is the writing. The storytelling here is keen and focused, also striking a perfect balance between sexy and sensual. Challengers is about tennis and all through the 131 minutes of runtime it makes sure to stamp that. Characterization is another strength of Challengers. The characters here are complex and developed with proper care. Watching their motives gradually unfold as the timeline alternates is truly delightful. The exploration of themes such as friendship, obsession, love, and passion is breathtaking in its originality. There's nothing cookie-cutter here, the perspectives trailed are fresh and unique whilst fitting perfectly with the story being told. The performances delivered by the lead trio are some of the best of the year. Zendaya has shown in the past her acting finesse but her take as Tashi Duncan is probably her most complex role to date. Her mannerisms and subtle facial changes are the crown jewel of her performance here. Josh O'Connor, as always, delivers a mesmerising performance. This is the first project I've seen Mike Faist in, and I'm eager to see more from him. What truly holds this movie together is the incredible direction from Luca Guadagnino. He masterfully handles the story and characters, drawing out the best in his cast. His use of callbacks is superb. The editing choices, the artistic structure, and the way he handles the metaphoric nature of the story are brilliant. The score, cinematography, and camera work just make everything that's great even better. I had times where I had to pause the movie, times I had to rewind, times I screamed, times I laughed... Challengers is a complete cinematic experience. 9-9.5/10

Quiz Lady Quiz Lady tells the story of estranged sisters that go on a quiz show to save their dog, after a moblord abducts the dog because of unpaid debts by their runaway mother. This movie thrives on the undeniable chemistry between its leads. Awkwafina, renowned for her exaggerated comedic style, brings a refreshing touch to her role as a laid-back, reclusive game show whiz. Conversely, Sandra Oh, typically known for her calm, dramatic performances, shines as an effervescent and free-spirited character, delivering a breathtaking portrayal. The delightful switch in the leads' usual roles adds to the enjoyment of the film. The sister duo brings heart and sisterly warmth to this movie, especially Sandra Oh's character. The comedy isn't always spot-on but for most parts it's good. The story isn't grand or special and during the first half I felt it may amount to nothing but by the time the end credits rolled I found the entire movie to be well worth my time and honestly wanting more from the sister duo. There are some silly and eye-roll-inducing moments but given the movie's style, these are forgivable. Once again, Sandra Oh is just brilliant in this movie and I want to see her in more comedic roles. 6.5-7/10

The Idea Of You Dubbed The Harry Styles fanfiction movie, we get a romantic movie about a 40-year-old single mother who finds herself in a passionate relationship with the young lead singer of a boy band. What could possibly go wrong? These days, many romantic comedies fail to captivate audiences, often due to uninspired plots or mediocre acting. However, "The Idea Of You" doesn't transport viewers back to the golden era of romcoms, yet it distinguishes itself from the generic ones flooding the market **** get a story that's solid and engaging even though there are storylines that are left unexplored such as the tension among band members upon the relationship's revelation and a more gradual development of the romance. The ending may not please everyone. I found the darker false ending, suggesting the relationship as a catalyst for Solene's break from her routine life, more compelling than the actual conclusion. Ending on this note would have been more impactful because we get that the relationship has made Solene primed for more romance with other people. Realistically, this would have been a tough relationship to carry on. In the final act, Solene's daughter, Izzy, gives her support to her mother but when the full weight of that decision crashes on her she withdraws her support. This element infuriated me because I loved how understanding and mature she was, but upon reflection, that decision the plot takes is one of the best. It portrays the complexity of doing what's right. It also shows the fickleness of our minds and the challenge of sticking to our decisions when it's difficult, and also the necessity of letting go. Anne Hathaway is the linchpin that makes The Idea Of You work. She brings as much dedication to this role as she would a grander performance, and it shows. The chemistry she shares with Nicholas Galitzine is also undeniable, brimming with sensuality and ease. Nicholas Galitzine is slowly building a reputable repertoire as an actor. Looking for a good love story? How about the allure of boy bands and their electrifying performances? Add in stunning leads with undeniable chemistry and an emotionally vulnerable male protagonist, and "The Idea Of You" becomes the ideal choice. 6.5/10

Immaculate In Immaculate, we're given a nunsploitation story. Sister Cecilia relocates to an Italian convent following the closure of the one where she was raised in America. Soon after her arrival, she becomes pregnant and this is tagged an immaculate conception seeing as she's still a virgin. The film explores the concept of women's bodily autonomy and challenges the perception of women solely as vessels for reproduction. This psychological religious horror is mostly good but the religious aspects could have gotten more emphasis. The social commentary on faith could have been explored better. However, it delivers a satisfying amount of scares and builds to a pulsating final act. The restraint we'd gotten in the previous acts is tossed in the final act, and here is where the movie shines best. The pacing is good even though it does take time to get to the juicy parts but with the limited runtime, it avoids being tedious. The creepy atmosphere also effectively carries the film through its initial stages. Sydney Sweeney delivers as sister Cecilia. Remarkably, she auditioned for the role at just 17 years old before the project was shelved. Migration In this animated comedy, a flock of ducks embarks on a migration journey from New England to Jamaica. Migration follows a very simple premise but it weaves a very thrilling journey into it. Mack, the father of the flock, is very guarded and just wants his family to live out their life in their pond. But his wife and son yearn for adventure and coax him into giving in to the migration. Kim, the young daughter, is willing to go with whatever the family decides, and with the family deciding on migration, she convinces Uncle Dan, Mack's uncle, to join on this trip. Looking for sibling squabbles, heartfelt family dynamics, and an adventure about embracing life's challenges? "Migration" delivers all that and more. Mack's desire to protect his family sometimes hampers their freedom, echoing the struggle many parents face in balancing care with independence. Dax and Kim yearn for more autonomy and opportunities to explore life's possibilities. The love between the parents, Pam and Mack, is so sweet and can rival most live-action movies. The sibling love here is also beautiful. Much praise should be given to the voice actors, with Tresi Gazal as Gwen being the most notable. She manages to be the heart of the movie, and her adorableness is just infectious. The animation style is fitting and the style of comedy used is very typical of other illumination animations. The runtime is simply perfect, it delivers its message and ends before it can get tiring, with this, it's hard to find fluff scenes. Migration is cuckoo, fun, and wild. I'd like to see more adventures from this flock of ducks. So gather your flock and embark on this heartwarming journey. 8/10

Dune: Part Two This sequel to Dune: Part One continues from where the first one ended. It follows Paul Atreides alongside the Fremen people in their fight against House Harkonnen. Dune: Part One had criticisms of runtime and pacing, and even though Dune: Part Two tries to improve on these, the issues are still **** grandness of Dune is very evident. From the score to the cinematography to the world-building, this is a movie with ambition that seeks to thrill. This sequel places greater emphasis on the story, yet even as Dune: Part Two reaches its conclusion, it's the journey itself that remains paramount. Dune: Part Two explores several themes, prominently Fate versus Free Will. Paul Atreides grapples with the concept of his predetermined destiny as a messiah, attempting to resist it but eventually succumbing, despite foreseeing its detrimental consequences. The white saviour narrative is stoked and exposed for what it is; how charismatic leaders are ultimately dangerous. However, the film's deliberate ambiguity leaves the question of Fate versus Free Will unanswered by its conclusion. Religion plays a key role in Dune, it aids colonial control. Paul's mother skillfully manipulates the longstanding myth propagated by the Bene Gesserit to support her son. At first, Paul is very unreceptive but when he seeks revenge he plays into the myth. Themes of commerce and capitalism are also used in Dune. It's evident that these economic forces serve as the underlying catalysts for the issues depicted in the story (mirroring real-life colonial undertakings.) The performances in Dune: Part Two are brilliant. Timothee Chalamet finally brings his range to Arrakis. The subtle changes he possesses in the course of the movie can only be done by a seasoned actor. Having gotten very little screen time in the first Dune, Zendaya shines as Chani in this sequel. She possesses a great level of expression control in the final act. Rebecca Ferguson delivers yet another captivating performance as always. This sequel brings a host of new cast members but Austin Butler and Florence Pugh stand out prominently. Austin brings a menacing and effective villainy to his portrayal of Feyd-Rautha, and is an absolute scene-stealer. Dune: Part Two adequately builds and surpasses its predecessor. It solidly brings the ambition of the filmmaker to life. It is a visual treat that'll leave audiences hungry for the next instalment, Dune: Messiah. 8/10

The Boys In The Boat This sports biopic chronicles the 1936 Summer Olympics journey of the University of Washington's rowing team. Most movies in this genre will rather go for theatrics and hone in on effective drama, but this biopic remains rather simple and traditional. The storytelling is clear and rows smoothly to its conclusion. The movie falls short in character development. With numerous characters appearing, many are sidelined, and even the main ones lack proper exploration. This is honestly what sports biopics are about, the drive and push that offers the eventual success, and this movie doesn't pack a lot of that. The Boys In The Boat authentically captures the era it portrays. The setting, wardrobe, cinematography, and overall atmosphere of the movie vividly bring this period to life. The cast of Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Hadley Robinson, and Thomas Elms bring their best to what they're offered. The Boys In The Boat had the potential to be great, but it still makes for an enjoyable and straightforward watch. 6.5-7/10

Irish Wish stars Lindsay Lohan in a fantasy romantic comedy. Here, Lindsay's character, Maddie Kelly, is a book editor in love with the author she works with. When he falls in love with her best friend and they subsequently get engaged, she makes a wish to live her best friend's life a few days before their wedding. The plot of Irish Wish is very predictable but the leads manage to infuse as much interest to keep it engaging. Lindsay Lohan's revival deserves more than what her recent movies offer but she still brings her charm to them. Ed Speelers also brings a cute chemistry to the dynamic between him and Lohan. There's nothing special or groundbreaking about Irish Wish but it ends up being a comfortable easy watch that banks on the lead performances and the Irish setting. 5/10

This is Me… Now: A Love is a romantic musical that accompanies Jennifer Lopez's album, This is Me… Now. Is it a biopic? A musical? A visual album? Ultimately, this film doesn't firmly establish its identity, and it's possible the filmmaker isn't certain either. However, what it unmistakably offers is a chaotic exploration of Jennifer Lopez's romantic experiences. Only someone with immense audacity could conceive of a film like this, and Jennifer Lopez epitomizes audacity. It's an amalgamation of numerous ideas, not all flawlessly executed, yet each capable of standing alone to make this an enjoyable watch. Jennifer Lopez is a romantic and that's fully on display here. We're transported into the careless chaotic mind of J Lo with visuals that are nothing short of breathtaking. Many big-budget productions would find it challenging to match the visual splendor of this film. Each landscape we encounter is both stunning and distinct. The zodiac signs embodied by superstars are a welcome highlight in this movie, and after the novelty of their presence wears off, the bouncy dialogues they have helped sustain the film's energy. Jennifer Lopez is a performer and she keys into that with the choreography. Musical numbers are accompanied by well-thought-out choreos. The biggest letdown about this movie is the music. Jennifer Lopez has never been a capable vocalist but she's always been able to create groovy songs. But that's absent here. Most of the songs aren't interesting; from the phrasing to the melodies to the sonics, all that's present is music that isn't imaginative, and even when she tries to switch up with a rap flow, it all ends up being jaded. The lyrics aren't that profound and sometimes don't necessarily sync with the visuals or storyline. Now, even though the music isn't sonically imaginative, the cohesion found is solid. There's nothing jarring or incongruent to upset the flow of the songs. Jennifer Lopez's performance here is applaudable. She's a romantic lead aficionado so the territories here are very familiar, but there's also a freshness to the performance she delivers. This is Me… Now: A Love Story would have been a splendid musical movie/visual album if not for the accompanying music. However, despite this drawback, the movie still stands as a grand and bold ride. 6.5/10

Madame web Madame Web emerges as the origin tale of Cassie Webb. Her quest leads her to rescue three girls from the clutches of Ezekiel Sims, a ruthless figure intent on their demise to evade his own fate at their hands in the future. Films in Sony's Spider-Man universe have received criticism, and Madame Web isn't exempt from that. However, contrary to many reviews, Madame Web is a straightforward and enjoyable superhero film. It doesn't aim for grandeur, which aligns well with its storyline. Despite uninspiring dialogue hinted at in trailers, the actual movie doesn't suffer from this. Though not particularly imaginative, the dialogue effectively propels the story forward. The film effectively captures the nostalgia of its 2003 setting. The soundtrack plays a significant role in this, and the homage to Beyoncé's "Dangerously In Love" was a delightful touch. Madame Web does indeed encounter several challenges. The unfolding of subplots relies too heavily on convenient occurrences, which can be frustrating for viewers. While the exploration of the titular character's powers is intriguing, it diminishes the suspense that should accompany this genre of film. As obstacles arise, the predictability of their resolution removes any sense of genuine tension or dread. For a superhero movie where the principal characters are battling a villain palpably stronger and possessing no impressive powers of their own, the action scenes manage to be more effective than one would expect. The performances in this film may not be stellar, but they are well-suited to their roles. Dakota Johnson portrays just the right balance of detachment and confusion required for her character. Her reluctance to embrace heroism is palpable and serves as a driving force throughout the movie. The rest of the cast also meet the expectations for their respective roles. Numerous aspects of Madame Web require refinement and clarification but it's notable that the runtime isn't adversely affected. Surprisingly, the two-hour duration passes smoothly without feeling prolonged or dragged out. Madame Web would benefit from better writing but overall it's a simple and decent movie that knows what it is and doesn't try to go beyond that. 5.5/10

Poor Things In filmmaking, injecting comedy can be a hit-or-miss endeavour, often feeling forced or overly contrived. However, "Poor Things" effortlessly sidesteps these pitfalls. Its comedy flows naturally, buoyed by sharp dialogue and standout performances. The dialogue is so captivating that I found myself hanging onto every word, fully engrossed in the film from start to finish. Poor Things starts with pizzazz and even by the second half where the plot becomes more profound, its charm remains unbroken. Poor Things earns applause on multiple fronts, starting with its exceptional costuming. Bella Baxter's character comes alive with vivid clarity, thanks to the impeccably structured and colorful dresses she wears, each one more stunning than the last. Another high mark to be found here is in the camera work and angling. Praise should also be given to the production designers, art and set decorators, and makeup department. All these are capped with a brilliant direction from Yorgos Lanthimos. The world he presents is picturesque, strange, and rich. Many times movies serve style over substance but Poor Things is a delightful dose of both. With excellent pacing, it seamlessly transitions through tone shifts without sacrificing its essence. The film explores various themes, adeptly handling coming-of-age elements, and while its feminist messaging may not be flawless, it remains a commendable addition to the genre. Emma Stone, already regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation, continues to astonish with each new role she undertakes. In Poor Things, she fully embodies the character of Bella Baxter, showcasing her remarkable talent once again. Mark Ruffalo's onscreen suffering delivers some of the most memorable comedic moments in recent memory. Completing the ensemble, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef deliver equally impressive performances, rounding out this stellar cast. Poor Things is a rare gem, a bold and sensual journey that defies convention. Its unabashed portrayal of sexuality and audacious storytelling set it apart, making it an experience that defines cinema. 9.5/10

Train To Busan One thing every survival movie needs is an emotional core; connecting to the characters is key and this is what Train To Busan brings. This South Korean action horror film follows passengers during a zombie apocalypse as they race to Busan aboard a train. At the heart of the film is a father-daughter duo, as the father endeavors to fulfill his daughter's birthday wish by taking her to Busan to reunite with his estranged wife. Along their journey, a myriad of supporting characters are introduced to enrich the plot with depth and emotion. While melodrama is a staple in Korean cinema, it's skillfully balanced in this narrative. The action and special effects present in this movie are riveting, and complemented by stellar performances from the cast. While Train To Busan is engaging, it does have flaws. These include continuity issues, particularly in the inconsistent behavior of the zombies, and factual inaccuracies regarding train travel. With its potent character development, Train To Busan stands out as one of the best zombie flicks. Though not flawless, it delivers an exhilarating ride from start to finish, culminating in a final scene guaranteed to tug at the heartstrings. 8-8.5/10

May December This drama offers a fictionalized account inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal, exploring the couple's life two decades after the event.Elizabeth Berry (an actress) arrives in Georgia to study a woman she's about to play in a movie. This woman, Gracie Atherton-Yoo, was caught having sex with 13-year-old Joe Yoo and sentenced to prison. While incarcerated, she gives birth to a child fathered by Joe, and upon her release, their relationship persists. Over 23 years, they raise three children together and are on the verge of becoming empty nesters when Elizabeth enters the picture. A delicious tale of control, power dynamics, and manipulation unfolds as Elizabeth delves deeper into her research. She strives to understand the woman she's portraying, gradually absorbing the essence of her character. Gracie is mostly an enigma and as Elizabeth closes in she discovers that Gracie is always several steps ahead. In the end, Gracie remains elusive, leaving us with only glimpses of her true self. On the other hand, Elizabeth's integrity is called into question, revealing her inner complexities. It's ironically humorous that the movie she ultimately stars in is of poor quality, resembling nothing more than highbrow pornography. May December is campy and highly subjective, inviting audiences to walk away with diverse interpretations of the film. This intentional ambiguity, orchestrated by director Todd Haynes, adds to its charm. While it's both uncomfortable and entertaining to watch, the experience is deliberately crafted to provoke thought and stir emotions. The performances here are stellar. Natalie Portman skillfully takes us down this wild ride with Julianne Moore meeting her every step of the way. Their performance can be summed up in a mirror scene that sees them both fight to unseat the other, as they both admire one another. It's a sort of balanced act that's not easy to achieve. With the star power of Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, it's crazy how Charles Melton is the one who steals the show. As they both struggle for control, he's by the side giving a nuanced portrayal of a man emotionally stunted, a 13-year-old boy trapped in the body of a 36-year-old man. We can't say his dreams were stolen as he wasn't even old enough to formulate any; he's a loving father but when put beside his kids it's obvious who's a child and who's an adult. Transitioning from "Riverdale" to this role marks a dramatic 180-degree turn in his career and has me excited for where he goes from here. May December is wrapped up in soft cinematography, complemented by a campy score and impressive camera work. The pacing is also well-executed. May December won't be an easy watch for everyone because of its subject matter but it's a poignant watch nonetheless. A movie that's retrospective and provocative and sure to leave audiences with questions worth pondering. 8.5/10

Oppenheimer Oppenheimer follows the life of American Physicist, Robert Oppenheimer. This journey goes from his days as a student, through his pivotal role in developing the atomic bomb during World War II, to his security hearing in 1954. Oppenheimer hails as the most visually stunning movie of 2023. Christopher Nolan delivers a brilliant feat of filmmaking in this movie, there's an undeniable triumph across the board. The film delves into humanity's fascination with destruction and our relentless pursuit to enhance the means to achieve it. Character study is pivotal to the success of Oppenheimer, and a brilliantly layered examination is present here. This movie is mostly about Oppenheimer, and Cillian Murphy is up to the task as he delivers a brilliant lead performance. Robert Downey Jr exceptionally complements Murphy with a final act that shows him at his best. Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh round up this stellar cast. Pacing isn't perfect here and that's impacted greatly by the extended run-time, but Oppenheimer weaves through a fragmented nonlinear plot that ends with a slam dunk. Oppenheimer concludes as a brilliant biopic and a masterclass in filmmaking. 9/10

Killers of the Flower Moon This epic western crime saga recounts the tale of the Osage people in 1920, whose newfound wealth from oil discovery on their land brought both prosperity and a wave of violence and death. "Killers of the Flower Moon" presents a grim examination of how individuals, driven by greed and cowardice, can commit heinous acts. Ernest Burkhart witnesses his uncle's ruthless killings of the Osage people for their wealth and becomes complicit in these atrocities. As the violence seeps into his own home, he remains indifferent, even contemplating ending his wife's life despite his love for her. Despite its lengthy runtime of three and a half hours, the film maintains tight pacing throughout. While it delves deep into the lives of the Osage people, it also explores the broader circumstances surrounding them, offering a comprehensive view of the events that shaped their lives. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a fully committed portrayal of his character; Ernest embodies both heartlessness and cowardice with chilling authenticity. Robert De Niro, true to form, delivers a stellar performance. Lily Gladstone's portrayal of Mollie stands out as one of the 'daintiest' performances I've witnessed. Despite her character, Mollie, not delivering monologues or extravagant expressions, her gentle demeanor exudes life and commands attention effortlessly. She serves as a brilliant representation of the positive values inherent in her tribe. Martin Scorsese's direction is immersive, and atmospheric, and demands patience from the audience. With meticulous detail, he resurrects a forgotten incident, shedding light on it with painstaking care. While "Killers of the Flower Moon" may pose a challenge due to its lengthy runtime, for those willing to weather the storm, it offers a blend of education and entertainment. 8.5/10

After Everything Having read the books, I chose to remain loyal to this franchise despite the subpar acting. It wouldn't be inaccurate to label this installment as the finest in the series. Firstly, let's talk about the soundtrack. It seamlessly transitions from delicate to moody and then to thrilling as the movie progresses. Whoever curated it deserves commendation for their work. If Portugal needs a tourism ad, After Everything delivers that. We're navigated through beautiful landscapes and natural sights. The acting from the cast isn't better or worse, but there's a level of maturity in the portrayal that makes it seem better. Mimi Keene is undoubtedly the star here. Josephine Langford is missing for most of this finale as the story focuses on Hardin. Hardin broods his way to redemption, even though we can't definitively say he's a changed man because the movie ultimately utilizes a time jump. Nonetheless, fans of Tessa and Hardin will undoubtedly rejoice to witness their eventual reconciliation. We can take solace in the fact that this franchise has reached its conclusion, at least for now, disregarding the prequel and sequel reportedly in development. It's a relief to see the main storyline come to an end. 5/10

Maestro This biographical drama highlights the relationship between composer Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre. In Maestro, Bradley Cooper pours his all as he stars as the lead, writes, directs, and also produces. But sometimes one's all isn't enough. Bradley's virtuosity truly shines through his performance as an actor in "Maestro," presenting a portrayal that stands apart from his previous roles and undoubtedly marks a career highlight. However, while his script is anticipated to be sharp, "Maestro" falls short of achieving that expectation. The film struggles to find a balance between its lead character's romance and career, particularly evident as the second act loses focus. Nevertheless, Bradley's prowess as a director is evident as he skillfully utilizes cinematography and score to their fullest extent. Opposite Bradley, Carey Mulligan delivers a brilliant performance. However, hindered by a less-than-sharp script, she isn't able to fully showcase her talent. Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, and the remaining cast members round out the ensemble effectively. With Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Kristie Macosko Krieger also serving as producers, it's disheartening that the script of "Maestro" prevents it from reaching the brilliance it could have achieved. 6/10

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom This superhero flick is the sequel to 2018's Aquaman. In this, Aquaman has to partner with his estranged half-brother, Orm, to take down Black Manta who's seeking revenge against Aquaman and his family. Plot-wise, Aquaman 2 boasts of rehashed tropes and delves into this with so much predictability. This movie tries to convince us that the stakes for the heroes are dire but ultimately fails at the journey. We're taken from one contrived subplot to another with a bad case of exposition. The use of comedy here is distasteful, there are barely laugh-out-loud funny moments as hard as the movie tries. The set pieces and overall feel of the effects are vapid, there's no form of excitement as CGI meets more CGI. The best part of this movie is the dynamic between Aquaman and Orm, which adopts a buddy comedy style perfectly suited to their characters. Jason Momoa is Aquaman through and through, and his performance is spot-on, breathing with the eccentricities he's previously brought to this character. Patrick Wilson is the principal highlight of this movie, his portrayal of Orm is delightful. As a villain Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is inadequate, his character isn't interesting enough and isn't given a good approach seeing how his role is reminiscent of Killmonger in Black Panther, but lacking the brilliance Michael B Jordan was able to channel. Following the Heard vs Depp case of 2022, it's obvious that the movie struggles with placing importance on her character, ultimately being indecisive on how much screen time to give her. Aquaman 2 heavily lacks identity as it borrows numerous styles from various movies without any thought as to how to tie them seamlessly. It ultimately is a movie that can still be enjoyed if you put your expectations very low and just bank on the chemistry between Aquaman and Orm. 4.5/10

Orion And The Dark Sean Charmatz (in his feature directorial debut) delivers a fantasy adventure animation based on the 2014 book of the same name. Orion And The Dark tells the story of Orion, a young boy who grapples with various fears, the foremost being the darkness. Personified, the dark pays Orion a visit, extending an invitation for a journey to confront his fears head-on. Littered with metaphors and meaning, Orion And The Dark embodies a journey of self-discovery and confronting one's fears. Storytelling is an important piece here and is done absolutely well. Additionally, the plot is brightened with fun revelations and twists. The relationship between the lead characters is special and explored beautifully. The complex supporting characters also help this layered tale. The animation showcased in this film is outstanding, with a visually immersive and stunning world, particularly during the night scenes. While occasionally nonlinear and featuring a conclusion that may pose some confusion, this animation has broad appeal and serves as an excellent choice for family entertainment. 8/10

The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar This short film is inspired by Roald Dahl's 1977 story of the same name, depicting a wealthy man's pursuit to master the art of seeing without using his eyes in order to cheat at gambling. Wes Anderson's directorial flair is unmistakable, especially when paired with Roald Dahl's story. The visual aesthetic is vibrant, unique, and controlled, offering a harmonious mix of auditory elements and theatricality. The pacing is spot-on, transitions flow seamlessly, and the editing is top-notch, showcasing technical excellence throughout the short film. The cast of Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, and Ben Kingsley deliver performances that are just right. While not the most profound, this short film captivates with its technical finesse and outstanding performances, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in Wes Anderson's unique world. 8.5/10

Moonshot This sci-fi romcom shows a love that blossoms when a college student helps a barista sneak onto a space station headed for Mars. The standout feature of this romcom lies in its inclusion of robots, yet even with the added allure of Mars, the film falls short due to its lack of thorough exploration. There's a notable absence of depth in both the romantic connection between the leads, which feels forced rather than genuine, and the development of the Martian setting. At best the leads have only learned to tolerate one another. Most of the supporting characters also do nothing other than fill the run-time. Given the insufficient romance, did the film deliver in terms of humor? Unfortunately, no. The jokes and comedic moments fall flat. Despite its promising premise, Moonfall ultimately disappoints due to lackluster performances and direction, resulting in a generic and unremarkable romantic comedy. (Sidenote: Why was this titled Moonshot when they were headed to Mars?) 3.5-4/10

Smile Based on the short film 'Laura Hasn't Slept', this continues the story of the short film. This psychological supernatural horror tells the story of a therapist who witnesses a suicide, which leads to her experiencing horrific events that have her believing she's cursed. Sosie Bacon deftly carries "Smile," portraying a captivating protagonist. This horror film delivers the chilling jump scares typical of the genre, while its editing and score significantly enhance its horror elements. While not the most original horror film, it offers a fresh take on familiar elements. It effectively captures the unsettling atmosphere it aims for, and its underlying message about the lingering effects of trauma is solidly grounded. Although the conclusion may not be entirely satisfying, the journey to reach it remains thrilling. Smile will remind viewers of the haunting power of trauma and the enduring allure of supernatural horror. 6.5/10

Leo This story follows Leo, a 74-year-old Tuatara, as he approaches the twilight of his life and yearns to break free from the confines of the classroom where he has spent his days. When a new substitute teacher assigns each student to take care of Leo at home, he seizes the opportunity to impart his wisdom and assist the students in overcoming their challenges. Leo is an animated film that appeals to both kids and adults, offering heartfelt moments, humor, and deep emotions. Its musical sequences are unexpected yet seamlessly integrated, adding to its charm. With a bright and refreshing animation style, Leo captivates viewers of all ages. Leo excels thanks to a sharp script and effective characterization. The diverse cast of characters enriches the storyline, although I wished to witness Leo assisting more children on screen. The wholesome messages conveyed are skillfully delivered, avoiding any hint of preachiness. Leo will leave viewers yearning for their own "Leo" – someone who listens attentively and offers profound advice. This animation is a must-watch for both children and animation lovers alike. 8/10

Mean girls (2024) This musical teen comedy is a modern musical reimagining of the 2004 film with the same title. Arriving two decades after the original, a lot of changes are obviously expected, and this remake embraces the changes of the times while paying homage to the beloved classic. Even with the changes at play here, this remake doesn't best the culturally impactful original or match it. The performances here are mostly standard but not memorable, watching this remake will make you appreciate the efforts of the original mean girls. The costumes aren't exciting. The jokes also lack punch either from their delivery or writing. The biggest difference between both versions is that this one is a musical. As a musical, not every musical number here lands successfully; the lyrics aren't impressive and some melodies are forgettable. Some of the songs are present just to remind audiences that this is a musical and don't necessarily move the story forward, though Renée Rapp's musical performances stand out as delightful highlights. Overall, this remake retains enough of the original movie's essence to make it worth watching, but the changes could have been more finely tuned to truly make it 'fetch'. 5/10

On The Count Of Three Dark and thoroughly intense, On The Count Of Three tells the story of two friends tired of living. They decide to end their lives after having an exhilarating day tying up their loose ends. From start to finish, this black-comedy drama leaves no room to breathe. Jerrod Carmichael's directorial debut is an exploration of pain, depression, and existential dread. The dark element of suicide isn't sensationalized but instead given a nuanced and brutally honest approach. The film also tackles themes of racism, sexual abuse, gun control, and mental illness. Paced properly, the eighty minutes which seems initially short ends up being perfect. The story unfolds seamlessly, culminating in an impactful conclusion. Additionally, the score complements the story effectively. The lead duo shines brilliantly in this film. Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott deliver great performances. Carmichael's portrayal is subtle, gradually revealing his emotions with each succeeding scene akin to peeling layers off an onion. Abbott on the other hand is expressive and raw. This dynamic keeps their dialogue sharp and engaging. On The Count Of Three is a sensitive film that may not appeal to everyone due to its dark themes, but it offers a powerful exploration of friendship, pain, and mental health—a tour de force in its own right. 9/10

Haunted Mansion In this supernatural horror comedy, Gabbie and her son, Travis, move into a new house that's haunted. Their quest to banish these spirits leads them to assemble an unconventional team including an astrophysicist and paranormal guide, a priest, a history professor, and a psychic medium. Through their encounters with the supernatural, Haunted Mansion dances around grief, exploring how it impacts people and influences their decisions. This movie is haunted by many issues. The runtime here is arduous and even made more visible with pacing issues. The visual effects and CGI are very perplexing and subpar. Being a comedy horror and probably with its target audience, Haunted Mansion isn't as scary as it should be. The main villain here is missing for most of the movie, and when he's finally shown, his impact isn't felt. Haunted Mansion also suffers from a bad case of exposition, we're taken from one back story to another which ends up making the plot convoluted. The performances here are the best thing about this movie, although hindered by the script, the star-studded cast manages to make it tolerable. The emotional scenes are also handled well, and Tiffany Haddish as always is a comedic star. Haunted Mansion ends as a movie that could have been funnier, scarier, and shorter. 5.5/10

The Kissing Booth Elle and Lee are lifelong friends, so when Elle falls for Lee's brother, Noah, this threatens to end their friendship. The movie is based on a teen-authored novel, clearly targeting a teenage audience. However, this presents a problem as there are significant flaws in the storyline that younger viewers might overlook but more mature audiences would readily notice. Noah's portrayal as a toxic and dominant character raises concerns, especially since he is depicted as the romantic interest. His propensity for conflict is evident, yet the film fails to explore the underlying reasons behind this behavior. The inclusion of the kissing booth subplot adds a touch of humor, albeit somewhat incredulous given the sensibilities about such events in schools. Furthermore, the attempt to ascribe significance to the kissing booth at the latter end of the movie feels forced and, frankly, a bit nauseating. Clearly, there's a dire need for script refinement, as the source material, while inherently youthful, could have been polished to a higher standard by the experienced adults behind the production. In the first quarter of the movie, a subtle love triangle emerges between Elle, Lee, and Noah. However, this dynamic is abruptly disrupted when Lee enters into a relationship with another girl midway through the film, and the love triangle is hastily tossed aside. Additionally, Noah's acceptance into Harvard is comical, because he's not shown to be a serious academic, coupled with his penchant for conflict. Moreover, the final act of the movie is bogged down by an excess of melodrama. The acting is average, nothing noteworthy, as is the norm with many teen-focused movies. The Kissing Booth ends without any good message for audiences and doesn't even deliver on the romance as the leads don't end up together. Ultimately, we can say that audiences shouldn't do anything portrayed in this movie. With its lackluster portrayal of toxic relationships, superficial treatment of important themes, and underdeveloped, audiences will be left dissatisfied. 3.5/10

Senior Year In this movie, Stephanie Conway (portrayed by Rebel Wilson), a beloved high school senior aspiring to be prom queen, falls into a coma due to a scheme orchestrated by her nemesis. Two decades later, she emerges from her coma and resolves to complete her senior year. Senior Year taps into 2000s nostalgia and benefits greatly from Rebel Wilson's comedic prowess. However, it falls short in depth. While the plot shows potential, it quickly feels underdeveloped. The stark contrast between young and older Stephanie is puzzling, as she ages physically but not mentally, seemingly played for laughs. The numerous characters here don't elevate the story, and they're not always fully utilised. The ending is rushed, and leaves loose ends; the fate of some characters remains unknown, case in point Tiffany and Blaine. Ultimately, Senior Year is a tropey and predictable flick but it also has its golden moments that help make it tolerable. 5.5/10

Anatomy of a fall This French thriller details a court drama of a woman trying to prove her innocence after her husband's death. The direction by Justine Triet is keen as she trails the marriage the lead character has with her husband. Sandra Hüller as Sandra Voyter brilliantly carries the weight of this movie with a performance that's magnetic and sophisticated. Anatomy of a fall lives up to its title as it feels like a dissection of the supposed fall that led to Sandra's husband's death and the dynamics of the marriage they possessed before his death. As the plot moves along, the question of Sandra's innocence hangs in the air, adding a layer of suspense and intrigue. The performances in this movie are phenomenal, so much so that this trails down to the pet in the family, the performance by the canine here is one of the best. The cinematography here is simple and effective but the camera work is brilliant. The pacing is also near-perfect as the plot unfurls. As the credits roll, the lingering suspense and emotional resonance affirm that this French thriller is not just a courtroom drama; it's a riveting journey through the intricacies of human relationships. 8.5/10

Society of the snow This gripping thriller vividly recounts the harrowing 1972 Andes flight disaster in Uruguay. From the first quarter we're met with technical brilliance. The plane crash sequence featured here is immersive and real as it could be. Undoubtedly the best plane crash scene I've seen in a movie. Society of the snow excels in steering away from the sensationalism that other movies centred around this event have done. It's genuine, true-to-life and detailed. Juggling numerous characters, the movie adeptly balances their stories through thorough characterization. The cast also deliver great performances. The cinematography present is stunning, as the backdrop of the sweeping snowfilled Andes contrasts the harsh reality the characters are facing. While the extended screentime and pacing may pose challenges, Society of the snow successfully illuminates the incredible resilience, human spirit, and interconnectedness embedded in this gripping tale.8.5/10

Wish In this, Asha, a seventeen-year-old girl in the kingdom of Rosas, wishes upon a star which comes alive. Together they both team up to bring down the evil ruler of Rosas, Magnifico. Crafted to mark Disney's centennial, it serves as an origin story for the wishing star. Wish does a lot to pay homage to former Disney movies, in this it has a familiar air around it which doubles as a positive and negative. It's too familiar to the point that it's bland and the magic it tries to portray falls flat. The songs featured here vary from impressive to fair and then unnecessary but Ariana Debose who sings most of these songs has a beautiful voice that manages to shine through. The animation here is cool but nothing spectacular. The voice cast is capable. It's a shame that Wish is what Disney culminates its 100 years of animation on.4.5/10

Napoleon This historical epic details the rise to power of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte during the French Revolution and his relationship with his wife, Josephine. France, the Army and Josephine are the three aspects that this movie delves into. Although we're not given a strong reason as to why Napoleon loves his country, his war exploits are heavily detailed. Ultimately, this movie breathes from one important political moment to another and at the end, it feels like a lot has been crammed into it. Balancing all these with the relationship between the Emperor and his wife is where this movie begins to falter, as the narrative oscillates between political events and the Emperor's romantic life, it becomes obvious that a linear narration can't be found. It becomes frustrating as, after more than two hours, you sense that you've witnessed a lot but also not nearly enough. This frustration stems from the film being significantly trimmed for its cinema release, tailored for Oscars competition. A more extensive version is anticipated for later release on Apple streaming. Napoleon is riddled with historical inaccuracies and this is compounded by the lack of character study. A lot is shown about the Emperor, but in the end, viewers are left with scant insight into the true essence of Napoleon as an individual. The action scenes here are practical and boast of technical showmanship. Notably, Joaquin Phoenix leads, but Vanessa Kirby's portrayal of Josephine stands out. Napoleon ends as a glimpse into what could have been a spectacular production. 6/10

Leave The World Behind Based on the 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam, this apocalyptic psychological thriller sees two families as they try to navigate life in a world that's steadily collapsing. The first two acts in this thriller build up a compelling story whilst establishing a growing relationship between the characters but by the third act, even though there are still grand moments, everything still feels dull. By the end of the movie, it feels like we still have a lot more to explore even though that won't still be a good idea. The screen time also doesn't help as this movie should be way shorter. The technical aspects are where Leave The World Behind shines. The cinematography is stunning, and the camera angles are delicious. The soundtrack is also engaging, breathing life into some scenes. The cast's acting was also well-done with Mahershala Ali and Julia Roberts being standouts. There is also a lot to think about the actual message of this movie, the deep questions it seeks for us to ask ourselves. How our reliance on technology spells our doom, questions on disengagement, the state of polarization in the world... Despite its potential, a more refined wrap-up and editing would have enhanced the overall package. 7/10

All Dirt Roads Taste Of Salt In Raven Jackson's directorial debut, "All Dirt Roads Taste Of Salt," the non-linear narrative unveils the intricate tapestry of Mackenzie's life in Mississippi. While the film's random sequencing may not appeal to all viewers, it weaves together a mosaic of people, places, and moments that define the lead character. Not every moment shown holds the same profundity, and some moments are dragged too long. Other than the random sequencing this flick has, it also relies on a stylistic dialogue that minimally uses spoken words, instead delving into scenes through expressive eye and body language. This is also coupled with an immersive exploration of landscapes, complemented by a vibrant and rich score which helps compensates for the limited verbal communication. This movie opens with the line, "Slow, take your time", and this echoes the pacing present. The pacing is slow and sometimes torturous; stares linger long and hugs last even longer. The nonlinear manner the scenes are presented in also deprives the movie from having a buildup. All Dirt Roads Taste Of Salt stands out with its unique mosaic approach to memories, but this won't be to everyone's taste or appreciation. However, its commendable cinematography and setting contribute to its distinctive character. 6/10

Good Grief Dan Levy in his directorial debut presents the story of a man mourning the loss of his husband with his two best friends solidly by his side. The movie opens beautifully with a party scene that is enlivened by the exuberant Oliver, the husband of Dan Levy's character. This scene transitions seamlessly to the death of Oliver on this same night. Luke Evans is able to make an impact in the short screen time he possesses, and the loss is palpable. Good Grief generally has a sombre aura accentuated by its score but the script doesn't match up. The plot isn't bad but it sometimes veers into melodrama, and even though the subject matter is sometimes explored with sensitivity and genuineness, it doesn't transcend into something amazing. Everything here is mostly mild, and the twist that occurs by the end of the first half doesn't still veer to the **** heights it requires. It's quite possible that this is due to the characters at play. Some are too big that they end up swallowing others, and the acting isn't equal across the board. Dan Levy's lead performance is good, but there's this **** feeling that a better actor could have brought more from this script. Ruth Negga as always is brilliant. Good Grief had the potential to be a poignant exploration of loss with many ingredients at its disposal but the restraint the movie employed ultimately hinders this. 5.5-6/10

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & SnakesThis prequel provides an origin story for the villain, Coriolanus Snow. As a prequel, this does a wonderful job of setting up characters later seen in the movie franchise, but if viewed as a standalone it falters to shine on its **** trailer promised a wondrous spectacle but probably due to its drawn-out screen time some sequences lack spunk, especially after The Games are concluded. It's also perplexing that with its extended screen time, a lot of character motivations are glossed over, and the final act is rushed through. The Hunger Games was mostly uninteresting and this can be tied to how we're given less time to invest in the characters, and also in how quickly the games take **** infusion of the songs is done splendidly and Rachel Zegler's voice pierces through in those **** Blythe gives a rousing performance as Coriolanus Snow and Rachel Zegler delivers as Lucy Gray even though she sometimes leans towards theatrics. Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage are this movie's shining light, stealing the scenes they appear in, and it's a crime they didn't get more screen **** conclusion, this prequel blazes from the hanging tree with good performances and setpieces but is doused by its script and screen time.6/10

The narrative kicks off with a reserved protagonist navigating the challenges of a new school, only to befriend a wealthy heir, setting the stage for a captivating tale of friendship and suspense. As the duo embarks on a summer vacation to the heir's opulent mansion, the plot takes an unexpected turn, morphing into a psychological thriller infused with elements of obsession and lust. The film skillfully weaves a 'will they won't they' dynamic, with moments of sheer intensity, such as the bathtub scene reminiscent of the iconic peach scene in "Call Me By Your Name," and a raw depiction of period blood, add layers to this unhinged thriller. While the final act could benefit from some refinement, the climactic moments still carry significant weight. Barry Keoghan, known for his portrayal of unhinged characters, adds another stellar performance to his repertoire, delivering a subtle and nuanced brilliance. Jacob Elordi provides a refreshing counterbalance to Keoghan's intensity, showcasing his versatility in a compelling role. Rosamund Pike, the acclaimed "Gone Girl," proves once again her ability to embody characters with brilliance. The ensemble cast, including Archie Madekwe, Alison Oliver, and Richard Grant, completes the lineup with commendable performances. The cinematography of "Saltburn" is nothing short of stunning, capturing the essence of each scene with richness and vibrancy. The diverse score, ranging from sweeping choral orchestras to 2000s R&B, enhances the visual experience. 8.5/10
