This movie is epic and grandiose, lasting three hours. The Deniro-Pachino chemistry is there, but is it enough to sustain the storyline? There are so many characters that it’s hard to feel much of anything for any of them. It’s good but no classic.

It’s a great film, and not just because of the De Niro–Pacino duel, which on its own would already be enough to make it special. What’s really impressive is the way Michael Mann turns a cops-and-robbers story into something much bigger, sadder, and more elegant. It isn’t only about heists, chases, or shootouts, but about men trapped inside their own way of understanding the **** my case it also carries something extra, because it is tied to an important memory from youth, the kind that stays attached to cinema forever. Maybe that is why I smile at the fact that the first time I saw it, I didn’t really give it the attention it deserved, and had to watch it again later with my head in the right place. And the truth is that the film rewards that second look, because it is full of details, silences, and glances that carry as much weight as the action. What makes Heat so strong is that it has the muscle of a thriller and the soul of a drama. The famous shootout is still astonishing, dry, brutal, and perfectly executed, but the film does not live on that alone. It also lives through its conversations, its codes, and that idea that hunter and hunted resemble each other far more than either of them would like to admit. That is one of its great strengths: understanding that the real center is not the clash between good and evil, but between two obsessions.Pacino is over the top, yes, but here it works. He has energy, eccentricity, and a wild presence. De Niro, by contrast, takes the opposite route: more restrained, colder, quieter. And that is exactly why the collision between the two has so much force. Mann knows he does not need to put them together twenty times; a few scenes are enough to make you feel you are watching something major.I also love the way it is shot. That nocturnal city, those cold interiors, that sense of emotional distance, of broken lives that keep moving even when they already know they are not going to end well. Heat has style, of course, but the right kind of style: the kind that does not decorate but defines the world of the film and the people living inside it.Overall, I think it is a massive film, one that ages beautifully and still commands respect. It may be long, yes, but when it ends you feel you have watched major cinema: an adult thriller, elegant, tense, and melancholy, with two giants in front of the camera and a director who knew exactly what he had in his hands.

Aged poorly. I was old enough for Jurassic Park, but too young for this when it came out. Seeing the cast and the type of performance (over the top and soulless) makes me grateful for the diversity we now have on our screens and behind the cameras.

Heat is a long film that earns its runtime through purposeful pacing and scenes that consistently justify their existence. It never feels like filler, instead building tension through patience and accumulation rather than forced twists. The plot is strong and controlled, and the film is elevated by magnetic performances from Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, whose presence gives even quieter dialogue real weight. The writing keeps conversations engaging and consequential, not merely stylized. Technically, it looks like a film of its era, but in a way that feels grounded and self-aware rather than embarrassed by limitations, avoiding cheap spectacle and focusing on what it can do well. The sound work is also a major strength, adding immersion throughout. Val Kilmer feels comparatively flatter next to the leads, but it is a minor weakness in an otherwise excellent experience.

Heat feels iconic, epic even though it's a character-driven story. It's pretty artistic despite the genre of heist-action. This is the story of two similar people living opposing lives. I knew a little about the structure of the film, so the ending wasn't too surprising for me. The characters are very interesting, layered and pretty similar despite being on the opposite sides of the law. The dialogues are natural, fitting and sometimes funny or just cool and quotable. The directing is perfect. The tension, the change of tones are handled masterfully. The cinematography is pretty simple, but incredibly effective and immersive. The editing is great, there was one transition during a car scene, where I just had to stop and watch again. The pacing is fantastic. I did feel like the movie was a little too long, but overall, it's amazing how 170 minutes went by. The production design and the visual effects are good, while the score is epic and the sound design is perfect. The casting is on point. The acting is spectacular too, with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer delivering career defining performances. Heat is a classic and when one decides to watch it, they immediately understand why.

It's an overrated film, bloated in parts and I couldn't care about some other aspects of it. It would be much better if it was lean, mean and focused. it's not.

Seeing who is at the forefront of the cast is, in itself, an invitation wrapped in velvet paper. It is true that this crime thriller is like a dish that is cooked slowly, without the need for pyrotechnic action. And in the end, the nearly three-hour running time is well justified.

Greetings from Lithuania. What can i say about this film, that hasn't been said before. I saw this film for about 7 times, i think. I love this film for a many reasons. Because it's so wonderfully acted and directed (the script is wonderful too). Because it's so epic. Because it's so beautifully sad. This isn't just a "cops and robbers" movie - NO. I don't know, maybe it's just my imagination, but in this movie i saw a fight not just between cops and robbers but a battle between good and evil. And it's a breathtaking experience, when in one, just one scene, two characters, who are representing good and evil (and two different worlds), just sit dawn and talk. And they are talking not about film's plot, but about they lives. You can feel how similar they really are. If one of them wouldn't be a cop, and the other a criminal, they would be the best friends (i heard and loved the "theory" that Vincent and Neil are brothers, when Neil says to Eady that "i have a brother somewhere..."). But enough about "good and evil". This is a breathtaking action "heist" thriller. Yes, i think that scene that goes after bank robbery is the most realistic "shoot-out" in a movie history (there are other wonderfully filmed "shoot-outs", but this one i will remember for a lifetime). How this film wasn't nominated for a best cinematography, editing and sound effects is beyond **** this films line A.Pacino will be remembered forever: "because she had a great xxx !!!" :). What a great performances, from everyone. By the way, (for a movie buffs), last time i watched "Heat", i noticed how big influence this film made for "The Dark Knight". The "interogation" scene in "The Dark Knight" is so similar to a "conversation" scene (not just a cinematography). Two main characters talks not about films plot but about them self's, what they do, and how they are fitting in this world. Bank robbery scene i a very familiar to "The Dark Knight". And this goes for a real fans: don't know how much of You noticed, but at movies ("Heat") time 100 there is a shoot that goes for 6-8 seconds. This shot shows a car, with all the "bad guys" when they are going through the city. This is 99% identical shot that was used in "The Dark Knight", when Harvey Dent is being transported in a cop car through the city - view goes "from the sky", there is no music, no city sounds, just a night and this excellent tune.Watch this "Los Angeles crime saga" - this is a timeless art.

Stylish melancholic neo-noir with excellent pace. 90's vibes. Al Pacino's acting is all over the place, though.

I watched the 'Director's Definitive Edition', where Michael Mann took another look and deleted eight(!) words from the soundtrack. Now his 170-minute monster is finally perfect... or is it?If you like boredom, you've definitely found a masterpiece here. The film starts off really promisingly: the robbery of the armored car, the music by Elliot Goldenthal and the images from L.A. are really great. The idea of developing a cat-and-mouse game between a gangster (De Niro) and a hardened investigator (Pacino) also sounds good on **** Mann quickly loses focus and indulges in endless banal dialogues full of clichéd characters and some really bad acting (+ some horrible green screen). I couldn't connect with the characters enough to be able to get involved in the multifaceted narrative. I have seen everything that is told here in a more focused, exciting and believable way elsewhere. Pacino chews up every scene, but still makes it entertaining; in contrast to De Niro, who plays his gangster so reservedly and coolly (his scenes in the house are very reminiscent of "Manhunter") that my eyes sometimes closed. The quality of the images also varies greatly: from beautiful to 90s TV movie level to ugly. The sound design in the action scenes is great, yes, but the sound quality and the mix as a whole are disappointing.Nevertheless, I would like to recommend the film - or at least parts of it - with reservations: When there is some movement in this boring parade, "Heat" is terrific. The bank robbery with shootout is rightly one of the best action scenes in American cinema, and the finale at the airport also manages to build up tension. And most of the time the film looks really fantastic, especially the **** here are the top 3 moments from "Heat":- Al Pacino talks about asses- Al Pacino beats up a TV and kicks it out of the car- the bank robbery

Heat is known to be one of Michael Mann's masterpiece and in doing a re-review just like I was thinking of some of my older ones I'm going to be redoing just to make them long which is so special to me and all of you guys. Starring a huge amount of cast such as Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and many more, this is going to be one hell of a ride. Neil McCauley played by Robert De Niro, is a professional thief and he and his crew, Chris Shiherlis, Michael Cheritto, Gilbert Trejo, Waingro who is newly hired, are both set out to rob a million dollars in bearer bonds from an armored car. During the heist, Waingro kills a guard without provocation, forcing the crew to eliminate the other two guards. McCauley prepares to kill Waingro in retaliation for the deaths of the guards, but he escapes. Vincent Hanna played by Al Pacino, and his team investigate the robbery. He has a wife, Justine who he and her had a strained relationship and he struggles to connect with his stepdaughter, Lauren played by Natalie Portman. McCauley however begins a relationship as well with Eady who is a graphic designer. So now the two are going to battle each other to the very end while stop at nothing. I remember seeing Heat at a young age at the right one and in later years back in 2016 since I got an IMDB account and looking at the Top 250 Movies of all time I got pumped. I didn't realise how good the film really is along with the others at that time such as Casino, Se7en, The Thing, The Usual Suspects, L.A. Confidential, American History X and the Alien films. Now I thought I was going to do so by watching it multiple times which I did and it never disappoint. This is what makes a movie so special. It's so impeccable. Seeing Al Pacino and Robert De Niro together in one movie is so mind-blowing. Seeing both two fantastic actors in one movie together is what makes them a duo. I think you'll remember seeing them so young in The Godfather Part II but they never share a scene together but now you see them in here now and next time you'll seeing them again in Righteous Kill and Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. Seeing them for the first time ever in one scene is in the diner scene is what makes the movie so special and you'll know they're bestest best friends for life BTS. Al Pacino is having a blast in this film. His lines is what makes it so memorable, it's crazy. "I'm angry. I'm very angry, Ralph. You know, you can ball my wife if she wants you to. You can lounge around here on her sofa, in her ex-husband's dead-tech, post-modernistic bulls**t house if you want to. But you do not get to watch my f**king television set!" "Why'd I get mixed up with that b***h?" "Cause she's got a great a**... and you got your head all the way up it! Ferocious, aren't I? When I think of a**es, a woman's a**, something comes out of me." The film however does provides one of the best action scenes in film history even years ago in one morning I'm being told to turn the volume down 'cause they're in bed. Of course I said years ago that the ending chase is thrilling and it sort've reminds me of me staying outside in the dark. Oh, those days. I have no problems with this film, it's so memorable and it's definitely my favorite of the few so here's that. I love everything about this movie, the action scenes, the pacing, the moments of silence even towards the end, just everything no doubt. I love Heat and I love both of these leading actors. Since I have no problem that this is nearly three hours long, I can watch it in one day without a fail like with Casino, Scarface, The Godfather Part I & II, Dances with Wolves, The Wolf of Wall Street and of course, Lawrence of Arabia. This is definitely one of Michael Mann's best films of all time.

De Niro and Pacino share the screen for, somehow, the first time ever in this mature, complex cops-and-robbers saga. Excluding an explosive, high-powered gunfight and a dramatic, suspenseful standoff of a finale, Heat is almost entirely preoccupied with ratcheting up the tension and exploring character motivations. Its powerful cast is astoundingly well-rounded, with a complete lack of black-and-white personalities. Villains show their soft sides, heroes bare their dark underbellies, and in-betweeners continue to straddle the chasm between fates. Devoting the vast majority of its running time to the careful, calculated dance between law-saddled feds and their spooked targets, it applies the same flirty mentality to the inevitable rendezvous between the two big-name stars. It's a film that constantly teases its viewers with promises, only to yank them out of sight at the very last moment and resume the hide-and-seek game. That persistent devotion to delaying the shrapnel in favor of more character-building results in a dense, impressive ensemble of players, and ultimately we care about the fate of every one of them. It also causes an already-long three hour duration to feel more like five or six.

A film that was already a classic, with its magnificent cast and meticulous action scenes that were very well done. Michael Mann has his own style of creating an environment that brings us pleasure in following the scenery and camera movement. The soundtrack perfectly accompanies the tense atmosphere in the film, emphasizing the unfolding of the plot.

In a word, impeccable action scenes. Every time the action came, I devoured it, although it came very few times, but when it did, it was worth it. That's what I liked most about this movie. Without the action here and there, I got a little bored by the end. It's a long movie and I didn't like it enough to keep my attention. So the biggest minus for me was the length. More specifically as I mentioned towards the end. Otherwise a blast and for me some of the best heist scenes I've seen, even if there were only a few. Great film and for fans of crime with occasional action I can recommend it.

What 10% didn't work from Heat from me is the relationship between Neil (De Niro) and Eady (Brenneman), they relationship was too random and it didn't work, some decisions in the movie that leave me quite unsatisfied, and Al Pacino random funny line that are so random but funny as hell at least, but the rest 90% of Heat works perfectly, it's an amazing action heist movie that fills with incredible performance not only from the iconic duo of Pacino and De Niro, but all the cast, it's a 2 hours and 50 minutes movie with a great engaging story that are also easy to follow and not complicated so that i personally did not bored for a second and really glued to the story, it's intense, it's really well made, it's frustrating in a good way, Heat is a really really good movie, i love it and i highly recommended for everybody especially heist movie fans, Heat is different than most of them, it's unique and some of the best that i've seen.

Always a blast to see DeNiro and Pacino together again in what was a pretty decent crime movie. Sadly, What could have been a classic is ruined by cringe-worthy dialogue and a poorly done final act that fails to match what the film had been up until that point.

Wonderfully textured action/thriller/drama with an exceptional cast and direction. Pacing feels just right mixing longer shots to build tension and sell the drama when appropriate. Of the course the two leads steal the show with Pacino perhaps overcooking it at times but the supporting cast are incredible. I couldn't help but think that this movie inspired gtav (see especially Michaels appearance and the heists)

I find Michael Mann to be inconsistent in many of his films. The first 10 minutes of this movie are great. The robbery scene is one of the best ever but then the film begins to be self indulgent and full of clichés. The characters are written to be spectacular rather than real (especially the character of Al Pacino) and many scenes seem to be shot only for the mood but are not functional at all. However the cinematography is great.

This is a brilliant film. While clocking in at a nearly three-hour running time, there isn't a single wasted scene, it is always entertaining and I think it is very rewatchable too. The cinematography, locations and scenery are superb, and the film's atmosphere and pace are also terrific. The story is plausible and beautifully structured with a breathtaking sequence towards the middle of the film, and there are a lot of memorable quotes. Heat is also brilliantly directed by Michael Mann and the acting of Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino is exemplary. So all in all, brilliant and absolutely worth it. 10/10 Bethany Cox

I have just finished watching Heat a fantastic film. Ah, I don't know what I liked about it really, it's just a long and compelling crime drama starring Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro and Val Kilmer and directed by Michael Mann. Um, I'm sure you guys are a huge fan of Michael Mann but for me I've never heard of him. The heist scenes are brilliant, the ending chase is thrilling and it sort've reminds me of me staying outside in the dark so that was years ago. it's been 2hrs and 44mins since I watch this fantastic film and I knew in my nuts that this film would be long and that's the running time. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you about the robbery scene and the gunshots are so loud and I have no problem with that. And that's it, enjoy this film.

Classic movie nowadays. The story is intelligent and the cat and mouse game between Pacino and De Niro is in the centre of the plot. Of course both are top actors, but also some other actors are great. The few action scenes are good also.

the film is totally realistic and well acted; coherent scenes in direction and performance. Good script, almost excellent photography, music to the point, the only spelling mistake in the film is when Al Pacino hugs a supposed mother of a victim, and he pretends to be a priest-detective-psychologist for a few seconds, that does not happen in real life.

Having seen almost every classic and influential crime drama of the past 30 years, I finally got around to seeing Heat. Having heard about how influential it has been in other movies and video games, I couldn't believe that I had waited so long to see this movie. Boy, was I disappointed. This movie is far from the masterpiece that I was led to believe. Other than a couple of great crime scenes (and a little bit of great action), I can't think of much that this film had that would make me want to see it again. While I wouldn't characterize the acting as bad, I can't think of anyone in this movie who gave a performance that is among their better ones. Al Pacino is practically a caricature of himself the entire time. He overacts in every scene and he yells about half of his lines. Robert Deniro has the same scowl on his face and speaks in pretty much the same voice for the whole movie. Pacino and Deniro fans looking for some "tough guy" porn will find plenty of it here. Ultimately, Heat is a movie that could have been made better by cutting about half the content. It is loaded with characters that are poorly developed, but are dramatically presented as if you are supposed to give a crap about any of them. One of them gets killed after about four minutes of screen time, and after that, we see his grieving wife. Rather than cry with her, I just kind of rolled my eyes. Another gang members death is presented with the drama akin to a squad mate getting killed in a war movie. I could have cared less. Val Kilmer's subplot centers around the tenuous relationship that he has with his wife. Al Pacino has a lousy third marriage and Robert Deniro somehow manages to have a romance side plot that is neither relevant nor believable. There is even a suicide attempt scene that has nothing whatsoever to do with the story – a diversion that will have you scratching your head, wondering why so much celluloid was wasted on it. Without exception, every single scene with a female in it could have been left on the cutting room floor, and not one shred of value would have been lost. None of the characters are sympathetic or well developed enough for you to want to see their romances work or to be able to share their pain. It would have worked well maybe in a television series where you would have more time to develop the characters, but here, all of the side plot material is really boring. One of the draws of this movie seems to be that it is a "realistic" and non ideal take on human behavior. Okay, I get that, but if you are going to go with the "realistic" approach, then don't ruin it with the occasional unbelievable scene or plot hole. The biggest offender is the famous bank robbery scene in the middle of the movie. It would have been spectacular in an action movie that didn't take itself seriously. But in Heat, I couldn't stop thinking about how absurd it was that a few guys with automatic weapons were able to cut through the entire LAPD like a hot knife through butter, escaping clean in the process. I still greatly enjoyed that scene, largely because it's just a great action scene that is well choreographed and shot. However, it's sort of out of place in this film. I'll give Heat some credit for not being a by-the-numbers cops and robbers movie. Maybe it is this uniqueness and the time of its release that made it so popular. Upon reflection though, there have been many crime and caper movies over the past few decades that are more entertaining than this one. Scarface, Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects, to name but a few. While I didn't hate this movie, I certainly don't think that it deserves a place in the Top 10 greatest crime dramas.

Michael Mann brings us this amazing crime thriller starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Diane Venora, Ashley Judd, Tom Sizemore, Ted Levine, Jon Voight, Natalie Portman and Amy Brenneman... HEAT has a rather great story about a cops obsession with catching a criminal named Neil McCauley and this maybe not the exact story but it pretty much sums it up. Vincent Hannah (Al Pacino) and his platoon of cop buddies are on the lookout to catch Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) in the act and wait for the right time to pounce on Neil McCauley (De Niro) and his criminal gang or crew who take scores and basically break the law.. The other criminals working with Neil McCauley are Chris (Val Kilmer), Michael(Tom Sizemore) and Trejo played by Danny Trejo... Jon Voight is a villain also as he gets involved with De Niro if only by discussion.. So Robert De Niro and his crew do armed robberies and take scores and Vincent Hannah who's played by Al Pacino and who's an LAPD cop tends to stop him and his crew. Neil McCauley (De Niro) is still trying to track down someone who did a job for him but escaped De Niro and his criminal gang one mysterious night and hasn't been seen since and has kept a low profile. The escaped man in question is Waingro played by Kevin Gage but after one of the gang is close to death and criminal mastermind Neil McCauley (De Niro) finds him and hears Waingro is involved and some dude named Van Zant then De Niro tacks Waingro down and unloads a couple of bullets in him. When he leaves the building it's swarmed with innocents pouring out of the building and LAPD Lt. Vincent Hannah (Pacino) waiting for him so then belongs a footchase and bullets going off... The rest is a surprise and you probably know the ending. HEAT is full of violence and great acting and bad language and helicopter scenes in the night sky beautifully made and directed.

Heat was technically the first-time acting legends Al Pacino and Robert De Niro would star in, and this was, and is big news. Both stalwarts had starred in the Godfather 2 but they were never together on the screen. In Heat they still only have two scenes but they more than make up for it by some exemplary work by the director Michael Mann and the rest of the cast. Heat looks at both sides of the law as it chronicles an armored truck robbery and the subsequent fallout. With typical precision, Mann builds tension not through contrivances but through character identification and the ever-present prospect of violence. Everything in Heat builds to a climactic confrontation that occurs with nearly an hour still remaining. Employing a forceful score by Elliot Goldenthal, evocative imagery by the legendary Dante Spinotti, and top-notch acting by a dream cast, Mann works his magic to fashion an epic crime story out of a seemingly standard-order story.(A must watch for any cinema enthusiast).

Heat is a steaming, polaryzing, long-ass sit through one of the most dramatic, suspenseful and gripping crime drama thriller's of our time. A headmatch between two of the greatest actors of their time. But the movie steams so long, it somewhat loses it's tension, but never it's flare for dramatics. It's no masterpiece, but it's surely worth the watch.
