Digger

Tom Cruise turns in a career best performance in Oscar winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s brilliantly challenging and risky satire Digger.

Rather than being a crowd-pleasing prestige picture, it's a love-it-or-hate-it folly – and there probably will be more people in the "hate it" camp than the "love it" one.

It has such lofty ambitions and go-for-broke performances, but never really connects.

Digger chokes on its own ambitions, and very few of the picture’s participants emerge still breathing.

Visually impressive, and Cruise gives his all. But Digger doesn’t have much going on beneath the surface. A disappointing waste of a superb team.

Tom Cruise takes enormous risks playing the outlandish title character, and his daring portrait of avarice and ego is occasionally striking in its ferocity. But this ambitious misfire is consistently sabotaged by Iñárritu’s gratingly unsubtle comedic approach – not to mention his introduction of a meta twist that further alienates the audience.

Tom Cruise’s latest film, Digger — the actor’s first real stinker in nearly 10 years — really is a rage-inducing sit. Not because of the environmental issues it depicts in such a dated and obvious way, but due to a pair of enormous egos being blinded to their baby’s badness.
