If you’re not already a fan of the franchise, you’ll find a fun, frenetic and gory horror that’s likely Cregger's best yet, with some standout moments of brain-bending body horror. If you’re a longtime fan of the series, you’ll find exactly the same experience whilst also being able to recognise the other layer of why and how everything’s unfolding.

Filled with baroque gore and wildly imaginative set pieces delivered at a feverish pace, Resident Evil transcends its simplistic premise with the sort of cinematic wit and flair for which the filmmaker has been justly acclaimed.

Essentially running a one man show, with only a few assists from deftly deployed comic character actors and ghastly tentacled creatures, Abrams holds the screen as a wiry and winsome everyman whose bone deep haplessness ratchets up the tension and comedy of every scene.

In all, it’s a massively impressive and effective film, but maybe one that appears so much better because the bar for this type of work is so low.

The movie is tailored for a horror-comedy audience and delivers its gory laughs in slightly under 90 minutes, making it the perfect length for a picture of this sort. Regardless of whether it manages to revive the faltering franchise, it stands out as an entertaining standalone chapter.

Cregger’s attempt to reverse-engineer this cinematically influenced series into actual cinema is unquestionably better crafted than any of the seven that came before it – or 14, if you count the abortive 2022 Netflix series and occasional computer-generated animations. But its approach to the task is so relentlessly flippant that it feels like an extended joke at the expense of both the beloved franchise and video-gamers more broadly.

Here is my review of the Resident Evil 2026 movie First, the story is about Brian, who is tasked with delivering a bag containing human organs to a specific location. He leaves the hospital to deliver the bag, but while driving, he hits a woman. He gets out of his car to check on her and notices traces of blood, but there is no body. He follows the trail into the forest and finds her lying on the ground, covered in blood. He takes her with him in his car and drives her to the hospital. That is the basic premise of the story. I do not want to go into any more details because I do not want to spoil the events for you. When a movie carries the title Resident Evil, I personally prefer to see an animated movie rather than one featuring live-action actors. Because of that, I was not particularly excited about this movie before its release. After watching it, I realized that my concerns were justified. Many scenes throughout the movie barely had any actual dialogue. Brian spends much of the movie swearing, without any meaningful dialogue or writing that really engages the viewer or draws them into the story. At times, it feels as though the writer did not really know what they wanted to say or where they wanted the story to go. Second, the way the characters—especially the humans—die is extremely strange and unrealistic. They often explode almost like blood-filled balloons simply from falling or being hit. They do not feel like actual human beings when they die. Third, the zombie designs were somewhat decent. They were not bad, but there was not much variety. Most of the movie was also extremely dark visually, which I found disappointing. You can make a great horror movie without making everything dark from beginning to end. On top of that, the movie feels like a mixture of horror and comedy, and in my opinion, that is one of the worst combinations it could have gone for. For example, there is a strange scene where a woman puts her hand on Brian's face while he is driving. I honestly have no idea what the purpose of that scene was. The chase sequences were good, though. The pacing, movement, and tension were handled quite well, and the sense of urgency was there. The movie also has a decent runtime, but some scenes feel like unnecessary filler with no real purpose. There are also moments where the characters simply swear or where the sound goes completely quiet without any meaningful reason. In my opinion, these choices brought the overall quality of the movie down considerably. I do not want to talk about any major or later scenes because I do not want to spoil the story for you. But honestly, if you asked me whether I would recommend watching this movie, I would have to answer very honestly: No. I believe that the Resident Evil name itself is what encouraged many people to watch this movie. The animated Resident Evil movies are much better, especially when they feature the original characters from the series and give the story a clear purpose, as we saw in Resident Evil: Death Island (2023). In conclusion, my rating for this movie is 3/10. It was genuinely disappointing, and I cannot recommend watching it. I hope we see more competent and higher-quality productions in the future, especially when they carry the Resident Evil name. We do not want to see movies like this—or shows like the one that was released on Netflix. In my opinion, neither represents what the Resident Evil series should be. So, as I mentioned above, my final rating is: 3/10

I went to see this film with great enthusiasm and came out very disappointed. I laughed more than I was scared. The story is incredibly stereotypical with an ending you can see coming a mile away. Save your money, don't go see this film.
