Underrated film. The meaning behind the film was amazing. There was an injury scene that was unnecessary but besides that, one of the best films of the year.

Someone says it’s probably the worst film they have ever seen, I’m sure that’s the worst of my life, and it’s not the actors’s fault. The problem of this film it’s so basic that I don’t really know how they ended up spending 55 millions dollars for it, it has no story, it’s only a collage of sex scenes ad some bad tennis, ad I talk as a tennis player, even at the end it was nonsense in a situation like that we wait to do a smash in our side we don’t jump as a kangaroo in the arms of the opponent, it is a shame that this weird “film”(I only see an adult movie not a film) is associated with a beautiful sport for gentlemen like tennis. Even the messages that are inside the film are nonsense and horrible, the men are waiting happily their turn to be used by a woman that has zero emotions and zero respect for her, the husband and her daughter.

At first glance, Challengers could be mistaken for a trashy Disney Channel movie with no gripping plot and a cliché love triangle. But that’s only during the first half. In the second, the film finally starts to reveal itself though it gets tangled up in constant time jumps, unnecessary slow moments, and blaring music. I do acknowledge a few interesting ideas here and there, but the fact that Zendaya delivers the film’s best performance only highlights its overall weaknesses.

Visually INCREDIBLE - but the line between tennis and relationships blurs to a solid gray... until I don't really care about them anymore... STRIKING - TENSE - TECHNICAL - SHALLOW Let me start by saying... Challengers is riding with three stars for the filmmaking craft of this film alone. Technically - this is a gripping masterpiece. I've never been more excited about tennis in my life. The back and forth of the timeline mimics the tennis ball flying between Art and Patrick, subtle costuming and on-screen typography inform the audience to follow the storyline. Every shock of electric tension is due to the cinematography... this transcends just another 'tennis movie'. This film is sophisticated... Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross supported these aspects in every way with their score. WOW. *adds to playlist. They can do no wrong. The graphic nudity from the rating, isn't what you think it is... and it doesn't add anything to the film itself. Why write that into the script? It's minimal and unnecessary. If you're looking for a 'threesome' teased in the trailer, you'll be disappointed. This film is all about the tension. I was impressed that Luca didn't push a graphic sex scene in our faces; the story didn't need it, and he stayed true to that. The rest of the script gives the cast excellent dialogue, especially in scenes with high energy and conflict. Pacing was on point. This excellence set up the cast for an instant success. Zendaya is absolutely brooding as Tashi. There's a perspective of Challengers that she was setting up Art and Patrick the whole time, but I didn't see that. She was a player, and they fell right into her trap. Faist and O'Connor were perfectly cast in their roles... their love triangle rivals that of Katniss, Peeta, and Gale. From an acting craft perspective, great work. (Award worthy? .... eh, maybe.) However... I didn't really care about the characters. While the filmmaking is sophisticated... it's characters were not. Their choices didn't have any meaning. They were driven by teenage fantasies and the romantic conflict they experienced in college defined the rest of their stories. That is basic and trivial. Within the first 25 minutes, I was hooked on this film, and desperately wanted it to go somewhere, to push these characters to their limits. Instead, they bounced back and forth just as much as the tennis ball between them. Nearly every shot is a work of art, making the camera a part of the story - *I* feel a part of the story. But... this isn't a story I want to be a part of. While I enjoyed the cinema of this film, the storyline wasn't my favorite. After raving about the technical aspects of Challengers... I can't say that I actually like the film, just parts of it. I definitely understand the rave, and some of the nominations this film has garnered... but perhaps its still a bit out of its place, in comparison to the rest of the films that 2024 gave us - The Fall Guy? Twisters? Better films.

Really exciting film. Great directing and performances. Score was the standout. The music itself but especially how it was utilized.
Not really about tennis as much as it is about toxic people and relationships.

It was okay. Definitely over-hyped because of the "spiciness" of it all. I think the promo was much better than the movie itself. The movie is easy on the eye mostly. The soundtrack is also really cool and fitting. Other than that there's not much. The timeline shifting over and over is slightly confusing. My main issue is the plot. It was average. The characters are unlikeable and eventually it just became boring. Hated the ending also, theres no real resolution to it. Just an okay movie really.

At the beginning of Challengers, I was a bit worried that my expectations for Luca Guadagnino's new film might be too high—after all, with Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, and Bones and All, he’s delivered the best directing trifecta of the 21st century. But initially, everything Guadagnino and Kuritzkes threw at me felt so direct, flat, almost banal. Was this really just about the drama between this tennis trio? Would I actually enjoy this for over two hours? Yes, and oh yes! At a certain point, the film had me—I was as trapped as the three protagonists in the game of life (=tennis?). And what a joy it was to unravel how the script works, with its unexpected pay-offs, some of which had been set up 90 minutes earlier. How the film can be viewed from three different perspectives, making it a drama at times, a comedy at others. How Faist and O'Connor let themselves be used by Zendaya like loyal Labradors. How everything slowly builds up and culminates in that decisive scene—the 15 seconds of real tennis that erupt the entire volcano of character build-up. While watching, I could feel the screenplay grinning mischievously at me. Then there’s Guadagnino, whose dominant directing style made it a particular delight to see how he controlled what I could and couldn’t see, and when. The dialogue makes the audience’s gaze dart back and forth like in a tennis match. The depth of the frame is utilized like a serve that somehow crashes straight into the net (the hotel bar scene is especially brilliant here). Phallic food, endless sexual tension, slow-motion sweat dripping onto the camera—everything about this is the best tennis I’ve ever seen. I won’t even get started on the film’s structure, the phenomenal score, or the staging of the finale. What’s clear is this: rarely have two hours flown by so quickly, rarely has a sport I don’t like captivated me so much, and rarely have I wanted to rewatch a film the second the credits rolled. Challengers will stick with me for a long time. Simply put, it’s an erotic tennis film—and pulling that off is an achievement in itself...

Challengers is just a chaotic film to watch as the acting, script and soundtracks is just out of this world to watch as it's one of my top films from this year.

I seriously think I watch enough movies through the week. There’s some many psychological movies that are so weird but keep me on edge . Ie : Little things was weirder than ever however extremely well directed, produced and acted . This movies is the weird type but bad bad bad in every way . I had to fast forward some parts mid movie to see if there was something towards the end to justify the boring 1st hour.

Is there a way for a movie about tennis to be exciting? This movie is. It's essentially a simple premise, a love triangle between 3 tennis 'champions' that somehow became a contender for the best movie of the year. If this is being recognized by the Oscars next year, it would have made Zendaya one of the 'shrewdest' young actress in Hollywood right now. This and Dune has made her a force to be reckoned with. Mind you, the Oscars while a showcase of great talent but also 'choosing' the best project that's suitable to your talents. As such, for her, it's just a matter of time before she recieved accolades in this area.

The greatest success of this film is to combine romantic comedy with sports, tennis specifically. What stands out the most was that the tennis games are narrated as in a live sports chronicle.

I really don't know why: #1 critics liked this, and #2 how it was listed as a "must see" in Metacritic. (I'm kidding...I know they are related.) This film was both embarrassing and excruciating for both my wife and me. Melodramatic, overdone, excruciating score, and poor acting from all those involved. Excessive overcranking became very tiresome. We are tennis fans, but this wasn't really about tennis and was only marginally accurate about the game. We have liked the actors in the past, but this was their worst work ever. We were planning to see this in a theatre but thankfully watched it at home. And had to skip forward numerous times just to make it through the film. Easily one of the worst comedies we have seen this year. Oh, it wasn't supposed to be a comedy?

Challengers mixes tennis with intricate personal dynamics. Zendaya's tennis coach character tries to boost her husband's career by entering him in a tournament, only to face complications involving her ex-boyfriend. The film shifts between past and present, adding depth to the character interactions. It is not as spicy or a teen rom-com as the trailers make you believe, but it is an enjoyable film tied together by excellent cinematography and soundtrack. Perhaps Tennis can fulfil everyone's desires?

A masterclass in managing tension with a bad tendency to be too pretentious at times. Still a really entertaining romantic drama with some awesome tennis matches in between. Full review on my instagram page _oscarbait_

Like the characters in the plot, the film struggles to find its identity and stick with it. Instead we are treated to overlong slow mo sweat beads, heavy doses of poorly timed loud house music and bisexual tension between the 2 lead men. Sometimes it feels like a sports movie but mostly it feels like we get stuck with a poorly constructed drama with unrelatable characters. It is very slow paced and holds very few thrills.

This is a personal preference but I find it difficult to love a movie when all the main characters are just terrible human beings. Despite Challengers being exactly that, I ended up liking this one. An engaging love triangle story with tons of drama. Great cinematography and unique camera work. An electrifying soundtrack and terrific performances from everyone. The characters are unfortunately all very unlikeable and this can be a problem to enjoying this. However, if you can get past that or accept this then there is a pretty entertaining Tennis movie here.

it was such a beautiful movie. The characters are all riveting and have an interesting storyline that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the final minutes of the movie. I’ve seen reviews that have said the movie doesn’t have a proper “plot” but they seem to overlook that the characters themselves are the plot, as the entire point of the movie is to understand the complex relationship between the trio. It is one of the few movies I’ve watched that has a lasting impact as you reflect back on it. To this day, I still think about the characters and all the little comments/actions they do that really explains so much. Every single little detail in this movie is so perfectly placed with a specific purpose. Without spoiling too much, I highly recommend this movie for anyone that is looking for a fun “rom-com” type of movie that isn’t so predictable. Challengers is a rare occasion of a romance movie that genuinely makes you think and reflect.

Challengers is seriously impressive. The action scenes are so intense, and the storyline keeps you hooked right from the start. The cast did an amazing job bringing their characters to life. Overall, it's a must-watch for anyone who loves a good adrenaline rush at the movies

Luca Guadagnino is known for his promiscuity and desire to push the proverbial "moral line," when it comes to the characters getting their way. In this case, the character pushing that line is Tashi Duncan. In the end, the film could have been much more driven by real competition between two professional athletes, instead, I was given a warning of what you could become if you cannot let go of your competitive spirit when it has run its course.
The artistic value was also in and out, the cinematography was on point and the audience could feel the gravity of every action, on or off the court, these characters make. But the music was most of the time discordant.
The message did not land, and we are left with this strange resolve in which Tashi wins and Art and Patrick forget they have been played into submission.

Just from the trailer, this looks like come female narcissist fantasy where she figures out a way to bang her ex bf and her husband. Threesomes are not a new thing, nor is this idea that it's okay for a woman to do it, but not a man. Imagine the movie where it's some young guy who's banging his wife and ex gf at the same time? He'd be a pig and he would surely get his comeuppance at the hands of both women. He'd end up alone and regretful.

I mean it's a classic love triangle story, just a tennis version, and more stylized version, it's well made, and it's performed really incredibly by all the cast, i've never felt so deeply into these characters in this type of love triangle cases and for me to actually care about it in a long time, it's brutal, toxic relationship, it's pretty intense even though i'm not straight feeling it, and i think that's quite the issue that i have with Challengers was that towards the end the timeline switch quite bothering me a bit that i can see myself being more into the intensity of the situation more if it's done better, but again i still appreciate the scenes itself as it was well written and well acted, great cinematography also, and just overall a good film, i'm not gonna rewatch it and i wasn't in love with it but i do think that it's a good movie with great stuff in it, and the most important thing is that i was into it from the beginning till the end and wasn't bored at all, and for a two hours plus romance drama film that was a legit high point for me.

Challengers In this movie, a professional tennis champion endeavors to make a comeback, supported by his wife, a former tennis star who retired due to an injury. His primary rival is his former best friend, who also happens to be his wife's ex-boyfriend. With the trio of Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor, Challengers was bound to deliver solid performances, but the main star of this movie is the writing. The storytelling here is keen and focused, also striking a perfect balance between sexy and sensual. Challengers is about tennis and all through the 131 minutes of runtime it makes sure to stamp that. Characterization is another strength of Challengers. The characters here are complex and developed with proper care. Watching their motives gradually unfold as the timeline alternates is truly delightful. The exploration of themes such as friendship, obsession, love, and passion is breathtaking in its originality. There's nothing cookie-cutter here, the perspectives trailed are fresh and unique whilst fitting perfectly with the story being told. The performances delivered by the lead trio are some of the best of the year. Zendaya has shown in the past her acting finesse but her take as Tashi Duncan is probably her most complex role to date. Her mannerisms and subtle facial changes are the crown jewel of her performance here. Josh O'Connor, as always, delivers a mesmerising performance. This is the first project I've seen Mike Faist in, and I'm eager to see more from him. What truly holds this movie together is the incredible direction from Luca Guadagnino. He masterfully handles the story and characters, drawing out the best in his cast. His use of callbacks is superb. The editing choices, the artistic structure, and the way he handles the metaphoric nature of the story are brilliant. The score, cinematography, and camera work just make everything that's great even better. I had times where I had to pause the movie, times I had to rewind, times I screamed, times I laughed... Challengers is a complete cinematic experience. 9-9.5/10

Huh. On one hand some of the experimental shots are cool, though some were really disorienting and frankly out of place. Some of the lingering slow-mo shots are also really gratuitous, do we really need 10 seconds of slow-mo sweat dripping? Pretty sure this movie would have been 20 minutes shorter with the slow-mo cut out. I really wish this movie had a proper music score, the techno bop at the start is great and then to your horror it continues THE ENTIRE MOVIE. Just imagine if Mega Drive did the soundtrack instead, /panties dropped. Unfortunately all we get is DUDUDUDUDU, again, and again, and a-bloody-gain. Now as to the story, welllllllll, if you like love triangles maybe this will hook you? Sure the tennis is nice and all but this movie is 99% love triangle drama and the simmering spoken/unspoken tension between the 3 characters. Personally I was hoping the 2 dudes would ditch the stupid sexy broad and realize they're extremely gay for each other, now THAT would have been spicy. Thankfully the acting was superb, though I do think Zendaya drew a short straw with her character, it's gotta be tough being nothing but a one dimensional hyper-competitive rude BLEEP the entire movie... Lastly I'll touch on the spastic editing because it was a huge pet peeve for me, frankly it's just all over the place. Someone should have confiscated the editors coke or something, and to make the spastic editing worse you keep hearing that stupid repetitive techno beat cutting in and out in and out. This movie hooked me good in the first third, became a slog in the 2nd, and by the end it had almost lost me.

A movie definitely worth a watch.
Positives:
- Actors nailed their roles
- Easy to follow if you pay little attention to this nonlinear plot and certainly it's not a mind bending narrative
- Good storyline Negatives:
- Unnecessary nudity
- Slow-pacing made it feel like a very long movie

Luca Guadagnino does it again. Another sexually charged, visually appeasing thrill ride. While watching this movie the love triangle and the game of tennis are the only and most interesting things in the world. With no antagonist driving this plot forward the script relies on the character relationships to move the story along. Leads; Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor do not disappoint as they all rose to the occasion of being would be sexpot tennis stars. The Electricity between these three main characters had me clutching the arms of my chair with my jaw dropping through the floor. I haven't felt the things I felt while watching these three be together on screen since watching Elio and Oliver in Luca's Oscar winning film, Call Me by your Name (2017).Never a dull moment, we enter this story on the Challengers tennis match that is the core scene through out the film. This scene grounds the story in what is important to these characters and who they really are. Through out the film we continue to flash back to how these charters met and how their relationships developed. Giving the audience the information as required when required. While I am usually a fan of a linier storyline but for 'Challengers' (2024), I wouldn't have had it any other way. The acting was fierce, the script was tight, the cinemaphotography choices were bold and all topped off with a next level pumping score and soundtrack to take us on the journey of these complicated characters lives and their relationship to tennis and love.

Everyone is raving about it, but is it really a movie about tennis? The trailer rather suggests that the film is about a flapper hooking up with two perverts and tennis is just a cover.

IN A NUTSHELL:
My dad loved playing tennis and was extremely good at it, although he never competed professionally.
The story is about a former tennis prodigy-turned-coach who is married to a champion on a losing streak. Her strategy for her husband's comeback takes a surprising turn when he must face off against his former best friend and her former boyfriend.
The film was directed by Luca Guadagnino. Writing credits go to Justin Kuritzkes. The film was recently nominated for "Next Big Thing" by The ****. THINGS I LIKED:
The leading cast is full of talent and chemistry: Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist. Their performances are really great and it's a pleasure to watch them. Who knew they could all play tennis so convincingly too?
We learn in an early scene how the "s" is added to the word "Challengers for the title.
The movie poster is terrific.
There is a lot of humor, both physical and spoken.
The musical score is energetic and often surprising.
Fantastic camera work that builds tension and heart-pounding interest. The filming of the fast back and forth of the tennis matches in interesting ways had to have been tricky.
There is an interesting and important moment in the film when Zendaya's character is talking about how tennis is like a relationship where words aren't spoken but souls meet in an almost magical way. The last few moments of the film illustrate that powerful concept when one of the players reveals with a particular serve that something significant has happened. (No spoilers!) Pay attention to the details. I love details.
The back and forth of a tennis match perfectly describes the female protagonist's push and pull of her romantic feelings between the two men. Zendaya's character lives for a challenge and she's only happy when there is a competition.
That scream at the end! It says so many things. (No spoilers!) THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:
Some viewers might understand that there is jump back in time at about the 20-minute mark. It's not immediately clear and bounces back and forth throughout the entire film. Pay attention to the hairstyles to help you figure out where you are in the timeline, as there aren't always obvious title cards on the screen to tell you.
Several scenes could have been easily cut to reduce the overall length of the film.
The ambiguous ending might annoy some viewers. I really liked it!
A few times, it was hard to hear what people were saying because the music was so loud. TIPS FOR PARENTS:
Full frontal male nudity.
Profanity, crude language, and many F-bombs. One of the tennis players gets a warning for his "audible obscenity."
There's a lot of talk about jerking off. Super awkward, gross scene.
Men kiss passionately.
Although we don't see "the act", the film is very sexually charged.

A 2 hour long spot for every sport brand you could think of.
Script is silly, dialogues are just made to seem cringe and awkward.
Cannot believe that Guadagnino made such a movie after a masterpiece like Bones and All

"Challengers" is a commendable film that leaves a positive impression. With its engaging storyline and compelling performances, it manages to entertain and inspire viewers. Challengers is marred by mystifyingly poor editing. Setting aside the experimental shots—some of which pay off, some of which don’t—there are a lot of basic transitions so poorly executed as to be genuinely confusing. I spent much of the third act uncertain when I was in 2011 or 2019.

I think this movie is ok only. I really don't see why critics are raving about it. It has a very simplistic story line and only has 3 characters in it, yet spans 2 hours. For a drama, it doesn't explore any heavy topics. It rather is about 3 tennis athletes, their simple love triangle back and forth, mixed in with their personal competitive drive (or lack of). That is all. I guess if you see this as a challenge on how to deliver such a boring story into a 2 hour movie, then this is a success ... But for the average viewer, coming home from work to enjoy a good movie or those meeting together with friends to have a good time, you can give this a pass.

I could see the end of the movie coming from a mile away but that didn't take away from any of it. As soon as the movie wasn't what I expected it to be I was ready to hate it but the subtle character development (and lack there of) had me clutching my seat. The absurdity of Art and his obsession with Tashi really played into the comedic effect of the movie and I feel that other's reviews do not acknowledge the purposefulness of this. The time jumps threw me but I felt that they were not overused in the least. Also, people need to note that the audience for this was not "tennis players." SNL satire-ed it in the best way with their "Sonny Angels" sketch, this is not a movie about tennis. Tennis is just a plot device. It could have been any other rich person sport and still gotten the point across. When it comes down to it, this was a good movie, just not what I expected and I personally believe the bad reviews are due to improper sound mixing at individual theaters and the lack of ability to adapt. This movie isn't a high action packed f*ck fest, but instead is filled with metaphors and slights of hand filming-wise that make it truly an interesting and incredibly experience to watch.
