Massive step down from the first Gladiator, it's literally a worse movie in every single way, and I do mean literally. Which is especially bad because if we're being honest the original Gladiator was a 7/10 at best, and I say that as someone who loves the first movie but isn't blinded by nostalgia. Also black washing the emperor is just as bad as white washing a character, historically Macrinus was a berber from North Africa, from royal stock with blood ties to Rome (how he was able to become an emperor in the first place), he was almost certainly not Denzel Washington levels of black. To add insult to injury there are PLENTY of actors who also could have put on just as much of an average performance as Denzel did.

The only thing that isn't mediocre about this movie is Pitt and Clooney, and they've still got it! However they just aren't enough to carry this movie. Though the kid had decent chemistry with them, I'll give him some props. Overall though this is a prime example of why you need to compliment good actors with GOOD writing. Music is also painfully generic, I miss the days when music complimented the story and characters rather than just being tacked on generic movie noises. Hollywood just needs to cool it with the movie releases, there are still great writers, good composers, fantastic actors etc, but when you're making 1200+ movies a year the talent is spread too thin. That being said it wasn't an unenjoyable movie, it just felt kind of... Stale? Like this movie has flavor but lacks texture.

Wow, what an unsettling movie, not quite a 7 not quite an 8, I'll say 7.5/10 and round up to an 8. Perhaps not my favorite from Verhoeven but it was certainly a wild ride, it takes about 20 minutes to get rolling but once it starts it simply doesn't let up. This movie sort of has it all, sex, love, drama, humor, horror, exorcist-y vibes, it's just a wild tale from beginning to end. I went into it blind, and I recommend it for the best experience tbh. That being said, this is definitely not a movie for everyone, absolutely not for kids haha, also if you're a prude and or a proud christian you can happily skip this one I imagine. As to the technical aspects, I would say the cinematography was absolutely gorgeous, the set design and costume design were immaculate (legit oscar worthy), and the acting was surprisingly good. I can honestly say this is a movie I will never watch again, but I think it is worth watching at least once.

This is surprisingly decent given the critics low rating. I get what people say though, it really does feel more like a tv show than a movie. Especially the bit at the end, it's literally a trailer for the second movie lol. This would have been a lot better as a 5 part miniseries, each episode 1 hour and spending more time developing the characters and letting them breathe. Would be interesting to have had a bit more back story as well. In any case it's a fun time for the most part, though it definitely suffers from a bit of cheesy dialogue and acting at times lol. Honestly though, the best reason to watch this movie is the cinematography. At times it reminds me of the movie Jeremiah Johnson, with wide sweeping shots of the land; red rock, mountains, trees, rivers, just gorgeous.

Never been much of a Planet of the Apes fan, but some of the modern ones were at least a little bit entertaining? Though I can't say any of them were better than a 6-7/10... However this movie in particular is just traysh. Terrible writing, mediocre acting, vacuous plot and themes, CGI ranging from decent to meh, almost non-existent cinematography (and the cinematography it does have is a rip off of far better movies), it feels like a Disney Marvel movie and that is NOT a compliment. Don't even get me started on the 2 1/2 hour runtime, just what were they thinking?! Blech. Looking up the writers it actually makes sense, none of them are responsible for a movie better than a mid 7/10, and those movies only score above a 6-7 because they are visually spectacular like Avatar. Find better writers Hollywood, I'm begging you.

The story is okay as far as prequels go, decent writing, good acting (really enjoy ATJ as Furiosa), great costume design (maybe a little too "clean" at times but it gets a pass), and the music is okay but a bit forgettable. However it really, REALLY falls short on the CGI, dunno how they went from A++ CGI in fury road to... This? Fake looking vehicles? Check. Fake looking fire and explosions? Check. Fake looking CGI extras? Check. Fake looking environment? Check. Extremely fake looking physics? Check. Oh and about halfway through the movie the war boys are holding spears on top of the war rig, and their spears clip right through the gate as they drive through lmao. **** all the immersion out of it. Bout to fire up Jurassic Park so I can witness some 30 year old CGI clown on this. While I didn't hate this movie, I did hate the lazy, glossy, slick, and fake modern look of it. Not sure who in Hollywood is green lighting stuff looking like this but it has to stop. You've already spent millions of dollars, just spend 1-2 more on DECENT CGI.

This movie has aged really well, at the time it was absolutely annihilated by critics and audiences for being ridiculous. However this movie presents actually decent climate science at the very beginning, which provides the footing for an unrealistic and impossible scenario to unfold. That aside the rest of the movie is just fun, the plot is absurd but self aware, the acting is mostly great, dialogue feels realistic, the soundtrack absolutely slaps, the CGI is better than 90% of the crap they pump out these days, and it has a wonderful foreboding atmosphere of disaster. Really it only has one lame duck moment, it involves hungry predators who shouldn't really be hungry thanks to the frozen meatcicles littering the landscape. A human vs human conflict probably would have worked much better, but that's minor nitpicking. This is one of the best movies to watch on a hot summer day with a nice cold beer nearby, and maybe a couple puffs of the good stuff. As far as disaster movies go, this has to be in the top 10.

As a huge fan of the books Villeneuve is crushing it, what he is changing more or less makes sense to change, and imo is in good taste similar to Peter Jackson and LotR. Watching Dune 1 and 2 back to back was a crazy experience, that Sardaukar throat singing is still with me days after watching Dune 1/2. I don't usually hand out 9s because I'm a bit of a review stickler, but I can't fault this movie for much. Sound track is insane, the visuals are just panty dropping gorgeous, the story is just as captivating as the books, editing is paced well and isn't a distraction, and overall it's just plain ole amazing. My only faults really are Chalamet and Zendaya have absolutely zero chemistry (which is subjective ofc), and so far we have yet to see a single mentat which we get introduced to fairly quickly in the books. Otherwise hats off to Villeneuve, I thought he could have done a better job with BR2049 (3 hr cut please!), but he is nailing it with Dune and showing Hollywood how to make movies right.

I would give this movie a 5.5 if I could, mainly for the practical/special effects. Otherwise this movie is just a dud for me, it's not very enjoyable, none of the characters feel like real people to me, way too many eye rolling moments, and it gives us very little exposition to understand the world we have been flung into. Absolutely adore Alex Garland, so I'm a bit sad to say this is my least favorite of his movies.

Huh. On one hand some of the experimental shots are cool, though some were really disorienting and frankly out of place. Some of the lingering slow-mo shots are also really gratuitous, do we really need 10 seconds of slow-mo sweat dripping? Pretty sure this movie would have been 20 minutes shorter with the slow-mo cut out. I really wish this movie had a proper music score, the techno bop at the start is great and then to your horror it continues THE ENTIRE MOVIE. Just imagine if Mega Drive did the soundtrack instead, /panties dropped. Unfortunately all we get is DUDUDUDUDU, again, and again, and a-bloody-gain. Now as to the story, welllllllll, if you like love triangles maybe this will hook you? Sure the tennis is nice and all but this movie is 99% love triangle drama and the simmering spoken/unspoken tension between the 3 characters. Personally I was hoping the 2 dudes would ditch the stupid sexy broad and realize they're extremely gay for each other, now THAT would have been spicy. Thankfully the acting was superb, though I do think Zendaya drew a short straw with her character, it's gotta be tough being nothing but a one dimensional hyper-competitive rude BLEEP the entire movie... Lastly I'll touch on the spastic editing because it was a huge pet peeve for me, frankly it's just all over the place. Someone should have confiscated the editors coke or something, and to make the spastic editing worse you keep hearing that stupid repetitive techno beat cutting in and out in and out. This movie hooked me good in the first third, became a slog in the 2nd, and by the end it had almost lost me.

Yeah, this movie wasn't made for me or my tastes, that's for sure lol. After I finished watching this movie I immediately fired up Tropic Thunder, and it made me realize there was nothing "fun" about Poor Things, at least to my taste, I was watching the movie like I would a natural disaster on live television, with awe, respect, and abject horror. I would love to get some of whatever drugs the director is on, or maybe I wouldn't actually... Technically this is a stunning movie, the cinematography is arguably the best I've seen, it was absolutely brilliantly shot, hats off. The strange steampunk dystopian world is also very intriguing, it's bizarre and it's certainly original, it's very tim burton-esque in a way. I didn't personally care for the costume design, I'll die happily if I never see another one of those hideous puffy shouldered dresses again... I think the concepts are a little, eh, gross as well? Like I GET what the writer/director were going for, I think I get what they were trying to say but damn it was gross seeing a woman with the mental age of a 12 year old and the speech pattern of a disabled person "discovering" sex. Felt like I needed to take a shower after the movie switched to color, and I'm not talking about the sex itself, sex is fine, sex is great, sex is grand, sex is beautiful, but it really toed the line with the concepts of infantilizing women, taking advantage of women, and borderline pedophilia despite Emma Stone being 35. Also again, I'm not a prude, but ****' hell that scene in the brothel with that crack-head lookin' dude was CREEPY, did not need that image of that naked dude put in my head. The acting is amazing, Emma Stone of course was great but I think people aren't giving Mark Ruffalo due praise, he brought that slime ball Wedderberg to life in the worst best way possible. Genuinely one of the slimiest characters I've witnessed on the silver screen. However it is all so INCREDIBLY discordant, thematically, musically, artistically, this movie is like nails on a chalk board. Again I get the intent, but it makes for a hard to watch movie imo. There are just a lot of scenes and images from this movie I would have sooner never put into my brain (cough freaky naked crack head looking dude cough), lemme tell ya. I would safely say if you start this movie, and can't make it through the first 10-15 minutes you can rest assured it never gets "better" it just keeps clobbering you over the head with discordant themes. I just... Idk what to do with this movie. I can praise the individual pieces of it but it's not a movie I would EVER watch a second time.

Huh, I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this movie. Structurally it's a bit strange, it's a story combined with another story and sprinkled throughout with other short stories, none of which are related to each other except a food theme. On one hand it's mostly delightful, 90% is very comfy feeling and a bit reminiscent of Midnight Diner. However it has several scenes that leave me wondering what the directors intent truly was. For instance is the scene with the young girl and the oyster the director taking a swipe at pedophilia in Japan? Or is it just plain old weird Japanese cinema? Does it have some deeper meaning? Some people online seem to think it's an intimate scene between two consenting adults, but uhhh, idk about that, I'm in my 30s now and it was pretty pretty preeeeeeeettttyyyy darn weird lol. Looking elsewhere online, you can see lots of people have very opinionated ideas about what that scene and others in the movie "mean" but to me the meaning is muddled. That being said I definitely agree with people when they say it's about the full spectrum of life, food, and death. I just personally think this movie would have been a masterpiece without the erotic food scene and the oyster scene, or perhaps just have them done slightly differently. For me this movie presents as a very comfy casual comedy, so the aforementioned scenes stick out like a big red throbbing, uh, thumb. The scenes pulled me out of the illusion rather than enhancing it, which is a cinema sin in my book. I'm not a bible thumping prude either, I don't mind sex and erotica in movies when it matches the overall tone.

Huh, I don't get the hype for this movie. There were plenty of moments that had me laughing hard, but I just couldn't "get" what this movie was trying to say. The bits that were good for me were REALLY good, basically every scene with the football players in full pads at all times were hilarious. Some of the representation was spot on too, it's rare to see decently written platonic lesbians. HOWEVER there is tons of punching down, and the main character complaining about ugly women wasn't really funny considering the movie was devoid of ugly women as far as I remember. Some of the dialogue was also a bit cringe inducing, mostly Rachel Sennot forcing her lines (not her fault imo, she had terrible lines), or Ayo Edebiri doing a carbon copy of her stressed speed ranting from The Bear. Lastly I know we're doing a "raunchy" comedy but it was kind of odd how it only sexually objectified the women, and it did it a LOT. Overall I just get mixed messages from this movie. Like it's definitely taking swipes at many aspects of society, but it also props up or seemingly gives a pass to some really toxic aspects of society in the process. Maybe I was just expecting too much from the movie due to the glowing praise online.

Caught this on a double viewing after Barbie. This is Nolan's best work since the Prestige imo, the entire thing is well acted, set designs are simply immaculate, costumes immaculate, and it's quite enjoyable. I'd argue this movie is being overrated a bit, it's certainly not a 10, a 9 maybe if you're not familiar with Oppenheimer's history outside of the movie. I do prefer using more of the 1-10 scale than most people these days though, lol.

If Quentin Tarantino, Predator, and Rambo had a baby it would be Sisu. This is just a stupid fun movie that harkens back to a simpler time of Hollywood, it's a violent action romp that moves at a nice brisk pace. Drags a tiny bit at the end, but that's forgivable. However this movie certainly takes the Adam Savage approach of rejecting your reality and substituting it's own, so be prepared to suspend your disbelief. Overall it's a well shot movie that shows off the beautiful landscape, the music and sound is not too quiet not too loud, plot is not "new" but is at least original, acting is fine, the practical effects are well done, the CGI isn't great but not that bad, and last but not least... IT'S FUN. You really can't ask for more out of an action movie, it brings to mind other cheesy great action flicks like Die Hard, Air Force One, Con Air, The Crow, etc. Sisu feels like an 80s/90s action movie made with modern technology. This movie knows exactly what it is and does not try to sugar coat it or conform to "modern audiences" or "subvert expectations" it simply sticks to what it knows best and is a fun ride from start to Finnish - truly a minor miracle when it comes to Hollywood these days.

Yikes this movie is overrated by the fans. Cheesy pop tunes pull you out of the movie, which are especially strange considering the insane catalogue of music they have and the inhouse music talent of Nintendo that must have been at their disposal. Then there's the bone dry plot, it's blander than plain cottage cheese and dry chicken breast, basically the only exciting part is Jack Black's Bowser. THEN there's the mediocre voice acting, they seriously went with Chris Pratt solely because he is a big name, they should have gotten a more mario-esque voice. Probably could have just let Jack Black do the voice and it would have sounded better honestly. You know if this is one of your first rodeo's with animated movies I can see why it could be a 10 or a 9. However after 30 years of enjoying animated movies, I've just seen this movie a dozen times. Which doesn't make it inherently bad, it's just lazy IMO. This movie is a fun colorful way to spend an hour and a half, but that's about it. If this movie did not have the Mario name behind it people would be ignoring it completely. TL;DR Fun movie but way too generic, terrible pop music, and the only great voice actor is Jack Black.

Wow, it's original, it's a visual treat, and the acting is top notch. This is one of those movies where the plot is irrelevant, and that irrelevancy is what makes this such a special treat. This movie was carefully designed and crafted with the audience in mind, not the critics, it's not selling some idea to critics, or pandering to a specific audience, nor does it downtalk to its audience, it doesn't tick any of the "holier than thou" hollywood check boxes that infest productions these days (on BOTH sides of the spectrum...) This movie wasn't designed to stir the social media pot. No, this movie was shockingly designed to simply be fun, look gorgeous, and to treat the audience to a good time, do you know how rare that is with Hollywood productions these days? Meanwhile the story is not great but holy moly it's ORIGINAL, and the world they built has potential for many great sequels. Kick back with some friends for a movie night with this one and you can't go wrong imho.
