Branagh is of course carrying this film with his performance, and also quite literally as director and producer, now delivering us a third installment of his take on Poirot. It's got everything you expect as a sequel, but this time, some paranormal novelty to boot. Unlike Death on a Nile, it feels like a more precise effort, and one that's way more entertaining overall.

Nota final: 7.9/10 (Bom).

Pleasant film, well-made plot for the genre that creates the right suspense and hides the truth until the end. The atmosphere gives something more to the film

Why does this movie get so low ratings? It has a great story with a lot of interesting twists, a cast of characters that fully deliver and a more than satisfying conclusion. It is the third Agatha Christie movie from Kenneth Branagh and based on the book Halloween Party. Because this is an Agatha Christie book I have not read I cant evaluate if its a faithful adaptation. Set in Venice a retired and disillusioned Hercule Poirot just wants to enjoy his retirement. But because of his reputation as world class detective he has to hire a bodyguard to fend of people who want to hire him to solve their problems. The events starts when his friend Adriane Oliver persuades him to (reluctantly) attend a Halloween party that has a séance that she belives is a fraud. This is the start of a story that will challenge Hercule Poirots perception and believes. I like the story that is a mixture of mystery and detective story. The twists are interesting and keep you guessing what happened. Like in each good detective story the revelation is incredible satisfying and I remembered that they left breadcrumbs I could have seen. The characters are excellent. Each one has secrets and/ or hidden motives. Like I said for the previous movies Kenneth Branagh is an incredible good Hercule Poirot. But it ends not here I must praise the whole cast and actors. They fully deliver their roles. I also want to mention that the team behind the camera did also their jobs really well. The atmosphere is incredible. It was intense and immersive. I felt the dread of the situation and being trap myself. Overall this was a positive surprise. I saw the mediocre ratings but heard good things from some reviewers. The movie is excellent and I lend it to friends and colleagues. Everyone, including me, liked or even loved the movie and so I give a 10/10. It was a great ride with an interesting story and great characters.

It’s heartening to see that michelle yeoh is finally getting the recognition she deserves and getting offered more diverse roles than the usual Asian archetypes.

It seems to be a film with fantasy, adventure and a script that solves an unusual and unsolvable mystery. Although there are horror stories, this film does not seem to be of the horror genre.

Best in the series so far. Keep making these and I'll keep seeing them in the theater. Fantastic.

Loosely based on Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party, the script by Michael Green has the merit to improve the original story, which is a great achievement because we're talking about the Queen of Crime. This, plus a darker approaching than in other Christie's adaptations, contributes to deliver a well-crafted product, good for any Poirot mysteries aficionado.

Do not go into this movie expecting a horror film. This felt more like a Halloween special than a full horror, but that's fine. This movie isn't anything special, but it had me engaged and second guessing the entire runtime, and even after watching it, I still have many questions unanswered, and I love it. If you love mystery movies and have 2 hours to kill, give it a shot.

If Branagh had been interested in a mystery film with dark undertones, then those who consider both the whodunit and the horror atmosphere pitiful would be right. When an actress now specialized in the role of the villain is inserted in the cast, the solution to the case is already given from the start. Furthermore, photography and framings are banally gothic, expressionistic, romantically lugubrious and justified by the hallucinatory poisoning, while from "The Shining" we know how an uncanny sensation can also be generated by an antithetical form. But there is a subplot that becomes prevalent, a post-war period drama that abandons the area adjacent to Conan Doyle and Poe to move to the vicinity of Baudelaire and of a cursed fiercely anti-family-friendly "malheur", as if the director had concealed behind the masks of Christie and Poirot his other referent, Shakespeare with one of his epic tragedies between blood relatives.

I feel like I am one of the few people who enjoy Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot adaptation, despite the flaws. A Haunting in Venice is the 3rd entry and it has none of the flaws of the previous 2. The cast is much smaller, allowing for more focus on the characters and allowing the audience to remember their names. It is also shorter with a runtime of 100 minutes compared to the roughly 2 hours of previous movies. This results in a way better-paced and tighter movie. The one unique aspect of this story is how it blends horror into a detective story. Hercule is dealing with a case involving the supernatural and this results in some weird things he sees and hears. The film has some great jump scares that work well. This is no doubt that this is the best in the trilogy with a unique premise and an engaging case that will keep your eyes peeled.

The 3rd installment of Brannagh's Poirot series downgrade itself in term of star cameos, and kept everything in one location (with the occasional enviromental shots of Venice). The move to a somewhat Supernatural thriller is a great idea, but short in its execution. Looking at its mundance box office result, this series seeomingly has ran out of steam.

What an amazing movie, it's completely filled with the atmosphere the author wanted to convey. Kenneth discovered something new, personally for me, something mesmerizing. It was such a pleasure to watch the entire trilogy (first the Alps, then the pyramids and the Nile, and now Venice...). The visuals are outstanding, I'll say it again, the atmosphere in all the movies is just fantastic! This is what we love!

[Branagh] is not a director of tasteful restraint, and bless him for that. A Haunting in Venice is a movie that wants you to gasp with delight at each and every shot.

A Haunting in Venice may be Kenneth Branagh's most technically accomplished work, but it's also the easiest to solve. I did enjoy the film. Especially from a directorial standpoint, the film boasts exquisite scenes.

Felt like I watched a game of Mafia where everyone took their roles way too seriously. Haunting lore wasn't explored too much even though it's core to the plot. Interesting to see the pieces fit together in the end, but felt a bit too contrived.

Interesting! I enjoyed the other two movies, but i enjoyed the second one a little less when i saw it, because i already knew the story. And this time around, I indeed knew nothing about it, i hadn't even seen the trailer. Apart from it being an Hercule Poirot story of course. And so, this was quite interesting! This doesn't start the same way, this starts like a horror story waiting to be debunked or explained. And then of course, the story adds more layers and more mystery. Great characters here, great acting, all done very seriously and very well. The pacing was rather good here too. I absolutely recommend it if you like serious murder stories.

In this film, Kenneth Branagh once again reminds us how good of a director he is, creating a haunting, period atmosphere of the most entertaining kind. The art direction and cinematography are also noteworthy. Unfortunately, the mystery itself is somewhat predictable and unbelievable, so come to this film for the goosebumps rather than the big reveal.

This has been a vast improvement from the previous movie (Death on the Nile) but still not as great as the first one (Murder in Polar Express). The aesthetics of the ruined house were pretty great but there were a lot of bad jump scares which they really overdid with which partially slowed and even killed the pacing to the annoyance of the audience. The story this time was really well done and I enjoyed the twists that it offered. The acting has also vastly improved (most likely due to the script also) except for the role of the dead daughter (which was just so over the top and bad) but thankfully we don't see a lot of her awful acting in this movie. Also Jude Hill was pretty terrific and I was pleasantly surprised to see such an amazing child actor (haven't watched a good kid actor in such a long time).Overall I mostly enjoyed this movie and would recommend you check it out after watching the First (you can skip the second you won't miss anything).

Brilliant film that combines horror cliches, stereotypes, and dramatic effects with a profound commentary on trauma, memory, and denial of loss in the contemporary wasteland of decaying Venice. This is a deceptively deep movie and a memorable performance by Kenneth Branagh, which attacks illusions of mastery and redemption embodied in the character of Poirot with an unflinching look at our helplessness in face of the realities of history.

A wonderful film in every respect. An interesting story in a great singular setting for a film that doesn't need to try too hard like too many movies these days that are filmed in a bunch of exotic locations or center on a lot of fancy special effects or car chases. A great story doesn't need all of that. This film has a plot that is interesting and captivating but not unnecessarily complex or overly long and in all respects it was very well done. Perfect.

It doesn't do anything new, but it is very enjoyable and entertaining. The bad reviews from what I can gather are from people with low attention span so they can't watch a slower movie that doesn't show explosions every few minutes.

This is an enjoyable movie but I wish they leaned into the horror aspect more. If you enjoyed the Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile you will have a fun time watching A Haunting in Venice.

You know exactly what to expect with this film. It is exactly in line with the previous two parts but distinguishes itself through its horror/thriller approach. Yet the film remains flat with few settings, an obvious solution and a story that never really dares to go beyond the basics of a murder mystery.

This was an interesting and unique tale. I really loved the combining of crime whodunit with a stellar true paranormal mystery! Something that I know Hercule was by no means prepared for but made this a great movie to watch nonetheless. I love the element of Agatha Christie in this and having Tina Fey play the role made it all the more amusing. I definitely think of the three films associated with this, that I've enjoyed this one the most and would recommend it to others looking for a CLUE like scenario with a haunting possibility!

Another mystery to solve, in the hands of Hercule Poirot; now in a dark turn. As a spectator, one feels enveloped by the intrigue and plays the role of detective to put together the puzzle, in the midst of surprises; The result is certainly, for those who like the genre, satisfactory.

IN A NUTSHELL:
I love Sir Kenneth Branagh both in front of a behind the camera. He directs the movie, as well as stars in it, featuring that multi-layered mustache. He also wears the hat of a producer, along with Ridley Scott, Judy Hofflund, and Simon Kinberg.
Supposedly, the movie is based on the novel “Hallowe’en Party” by Dame Agatha Christie published in 1969. While the whodunnit book takes place in England, the movie’s location is Venice, Italy. Surprisingly, this is the very first time a movie adaptation has been made about the book! THINGS I LIKED:
The cast is fantastic and includes Sir Kenneth Branagh, Tina Fey, Camille Cottin, Riccardo Scamarcio, Kelly Reilly, Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan, Rowan Robinson, Michelle Yeoh, Emma Laird, Kyle Allen, and Ali Khan. Everyone does an excellent job.
Perfectly timed for the Halloween season in the USA, the movie offers an extremely creepy setting with plenty of jumps and scares. I got to see this in the theater on opening night. While walking down the hallways in the large theater, I saw a TON of movie posters for creepy movies coming out in time for Halloween. One thing I really liked about this film is that it doesn’t have all of the violence, blood, and gore of some of the upcoming scary movies.
In order to get genuine scares out of the actors, the director worked with the technical department to cause things to happen without their knowing beforehand. Actor Kelly Reilly admitted that all of the scary moments in the seance scene scared the “bejesus” out of her.
We get to see some absolutely gorgeous images of Venice. I’ve been there twice and love its look and feel. It’s such a unique location, allowing for the cinematographer, Haris Zambarloukos, to make perfect postcard shots. The bird’s-eye view of the entire city at the end of the movie is stunning, and the palazzo’s interior makes for the perfect haunted house.
Despite its very dark setting and story, there is still a lot of clever humor to be had.
Each scene was so carefully crafted that you could see that much attention to detail was given by the director. I always admire that in a director
.A clever element of this dark addition to the Hercule Poirot franchise is that he is very much rattled by what he experiences. He second-guesses himself and is faced with questions about God, Satan, and the afterlife.
The clues are there but it’s easy to miss them when so many other things are happening around the characters. I didn’t figure out who the murderer was at all. I love how Hercule Poirot is able to catch the little details in order to solve the crime.
The movie poster is unsettling. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie’s book, you might be a little disappointed because the film only loosely follows that story. In good news, many viewers are saying the movie is actually better than the book!
Many scenes are visually dark, so try to watch this on the biggest screen you can.
I like Tina Fey in comedy but wasn’t sure she was perfectly cast in this role.
I wish I had been able to turn on subtitles in the theater. Some of the accents made it difficult to understand what everyone was saying.
Act 3 wraps up very quickly and suddenly. TIPS FOR PARENTS: This will be way too scary for many kids, especially young ones.
We see some dead bodies.
There is some blood.
We hear and see ghosts.
A seance is held and many scary things happen.

Am impossibly large visual upgrade over the previous 2 Branagh/Poirot films. The horror themes are light but work well in context of the story and setting. The whodunnit aspect is more straight forward and simpler than typical Christie work.

Kenneth Branagh is back as Hercule Poirot and as director of the latest Agatha Christie mystery. This one's set in post-war Venice, when an admiring writer (Tina Fey in a slightly-sassy period-perfect turn) escorts him to a Halloween séance that ends in murder. The big difference in this movie is the darkness. Whereas the other recent films in the series featured elegant settings, this one is set almost entirely in a run-down palazzo, with very little lighting. This is motivated by the spooky elements that border on supernatural. While the cinematography by Haris Zambarloukos is stylish, Branagh relies too often of sudden crashes for scares. The merging of two genres doesn't make the suspense or mystery any stronger, but the film is OK as a mildly interesting whodunit.

Kenneth Branagh returns to direct for the third time in the role of Hercules Poirot in an unusual gothic chamber mystery, this time only loosely inspired by “Hallowe'en Party”, Agatha Christie's 1969 novel, and sets the new mystery-crime no longer in the English countryside but in a foggy Venice after the Second World War, constantly surrounded by dark and disturbing atmospheres. The director-actor decides to distance himself greatly from the original text while keeping the crucial points fixed; to rewrite Agatha Christie's Poirot in a personal key; to renew the style, tones and register adopted by previous films; and to veer towards the horror-tinged thriller, introducing a supernatural dimension that puts (in crisis) the investigator's logical-rational thinking and skepticism when faced with the spiritual sphere, death and faith in the afterlife. This time the real investigative investigation therefore seems to be the one to be carried out in the mind of the protagonist, in his fears and fragility, especially in the face of esoteric/occult events to which he is unable to give a logical explanation, even before that which takes place regarding the case to be solved. Rhythm, atmosphere, twists and tension make this latest film enjoyable, but not fully successful. Michael Green's script sometimes seems mechanical and fails to blend the thriller genre with the horror one well; the cast remains on the sidelines; the characters are rather sketchy and stereotyped; the topic (as well as the entire investigation) appears not very in-depth and attractive; and the dramatic potential of some sequences as well as Christie's caustic humor are not exploited or expressed properly. Even many details of the entire formal apparatus at times seem emptied of their strength and in the end reveal fluctuating results in terms of effectiveness. But overall the work manages to entertain the spectator who, without many pretensions, is (well) disposed to watching it. Despite alternating between strengths and weaknesses, the film still works in its entirety: the positive aspect is that it is quite accurate, fluid and intriguing; the staging with an eye towards new experimental perspectives; an aesthetic (see the excellent direction, scenography and photography) with suggestive effects in favoring a sense of anguish, bewilderment and destabilization for the protagonist and the audience. These aspects which, albeit with difficulty, at least manage to compensate for the limits and imperfections of the film, and that is in particular the many narrative and visual solutions which are a little more banal, predictable and vacuous, less elaborate or interesting and above all less evocative than to the previous chapters. In conclusion, “A Haunting in Venice” will not be the most exciting episode of Hercule Poirot that has been seen at the cinema, but it is the freest on a creative level and very inspired on an aesthetic level. Rating: 6.50

A Haunting in Venice is a creative, atmospheric, and well shot Mystery/Horror film. The pacing is a tad off, with the mystery and overall plot of the film perhaps unwinding a bit too fast in the movies latter half, but by no means does this ruin the overall experience. If you like good, old fashion 'Haunted House' movies, or the previous Hercule Poirot films, you'll probably enjoy this.

Not as bad as I had originally feared. My biggest complaint is minor.
The movie takes place in Venice, Italy which is obviously one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But unfortunately we don't get to see much detective work because the movie takes place inside. Late at night. Where it's very dark. The cast is good. I especially liked the back and forth between Tina Fey's character and Poirot. Branaugh does a good job, and is less hammy this go around. Unfortunately the movie didn't movie me as much as previous movies, and it could easily be appreciated by watching it at home.

Given Sir Kenneth Branagh's experience as a actor and director for one project, he does a solid job here with comprehensive chaos similar to "Knives Out" that I think is not as original, though not as bad.

I like that they used a lesser-known story to adapt because it allowed for more creative freedom, rather than having to follow a popular story to the letter (like Orient Express). The cast is solid across the board. It is tightly shot and makes good use of the beautiful setting, creating an eerie atmosphere for the film. This was a massive step up compared to Death on The Nile and was worth seeing.

The world’s best detective and his moustache are back for another murder mystery, only this time with a spooky Halloween theme. Perfect timing. Horror fans have been spoilt these last two months with the scary selection of movies in the cinema at the moment and if you’re looking to continue with the horror theme then be sure to check out A Haunting in Venice. Set in post WWII Venice, on Halloween night. A now retired Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) is enjoying his own company and ignoring the potential cases that appear at his door every morning. He is no longer interested in looking at new mysteries to solve but after a visit from famous crime writer Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey) he very reluctantly agrees to attend a séance at the palazzo of opera singer Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly). But while at the séance sure wouldn’t you know it, a guest is murdered. Death just seems to follow Poirot wherever he goes and considering the circumstances he is once again forced to investigate the murder and find the killer before they strike again. Adapted from Agatha Christie’s Hallowe’en Party and a new one brought to the big screen from Kenneth Branagh. Last time we saw Hercule Poirot he’d had just about enough of detective work after his journey on the Nile (honestly Kenneth, we all feel the same). Though don’t let that experience stop you from seeing A Haunting in Venice because I promise it’s a much more enjoyable experience in the cinema than Death on the Nile. A Haunting in Venice is quite different from the other two, it’s scarier for a start. It’s a modern whodunit that still has a very old fashioned feel to it. Packed full of Dutch angles, weird shots and there’s lots and lots of loud bangs and unexplained occurrences going on throughout. Very much keeping with the creepy, gothic theme. It has an almost single location setting, with a very concise and better structured story. Yes it might be a little bit over the top at times and as usual Kenneth Branagh is chewing the scenery with his portrayal of Poirot again but it’s entertaining to watch as he’s clearly having so much fun playing this character. If he wants to continue playing the world’s greatest detective let him. I’m sure lots of murder mystery fans will continue to enjoy these movies. And with a whole collection of Agatha Christie novels to work with, we probably haven’t seen the last of Hercule Poirot. For me, it’s not quite as good as Murder on the Orient Express but it’s far better than Death on the Nile. A Haunting in Venice is enjoyable from start to finish and is recommended for the Kenneth Branagh fans and/or everyone who enjoys a good murder mystery.

Unlike the other two, I was never bored with this movie. The fact that the murder is actually foreshadowed and can be figured out if you're paying enough attention is what makes it.

Outstanding performance by an all-star cast, an excellent mystery that kept me guessing until the end. Great cinematography.
