Babygirl8
Jan 2, 2025
Nicole Kidman plays a upper echelon exec of an Amazon-style company
She dresses immpecably to the 9's, commands and gets respect @ work, & has a loving, caring family. What could go wrong? Like a lot of married couples, myself included, she is semmingly unfullfilled in her sex life.
Cue hot young intern who has Nicole's number.
Babygirl is a fascinating look at sex in the workplace and role playing from a womans point of view.
Because Nicole's character seems to have it all, and quickly gets caught up in an all consuming affair, things slowly unravel, and we come to understand that the life we see, may not be the life we get or can even understand.
Fascinating subject matter.
I didn't feel like it's was exploitive.
Real emotions that are worth exploring.

Put your brain in neutral, and go along for the ride.
Ridiculous? Yes.
Thrilling as all get out? Yes.
Was I glad I watched it? Hell yes.
It's Die Hard 2 updated, and I just might watch it again next Christmas.

A Complete Unknown9
Dec 30, 2024
Bob Dylan has had a fascinating life. Like the Beatles, his music influenced millions of people world wide. And yet, his personal life is subject to debate. He is a reluctant artist. This movie has 2 distinct narrative. The first deals with Dylan arriving in NYC in 1961 in search of his hero, Woody Guthrie, who is dying. He meets Pete Seeger at Woody's bedside and Pete more or less becomes a father-figure to Dylan. The rest of this storyline is how we see that rare occasion where we can see that Bob Dylan has unique God-given talents, when writing folk songs. The question for Bob is: Does he only want to be known as just a folk singer? The second storyline that I found even more fascinating was the love triangle between his first "serious" girlfriend, and the beguiling folk singer, Joan Baez. That is the real heart and soul of this movie. And Dylan is still an enigma to me today.
But I'm glad I've been around to hear his music and see him in concert. Nice history lesson.

The Order9
Dec 16, 2024
The Order was the long lost 2nd season of True Detective that we never got. Jude Law was haunted and Nicholas Holt's "messaiah-like character" was as clueless as most of these clowns are that think the world is one big conspiracy theory against them. The pacing was great, and the acting/direction were all top tier, but just like the first season of True Detective, I could have used a few more layers to this onion to peel back and see why each character became who they were.

Juror #28
Dec 2, 2024
If indeed this is Clint Eastwood's final movie, he finishes his illustrious career on a high note
Juror #2 is a thrilling courtroom drama about redemption, and going the extra mile to try and do the right thing.
Great cast of characters that we can all relate to.
No one likes being picked for jury duty, but thank God we live in a country where a supposedly innocent man can get a fair trial.
I hope more people find this movie when it makes it's debut on MAX later this month

Blitz7
Dec 2, 2024
I am so lucky that my generation never had to enlist and go off to war
I also can't imagine what it was like to live in London in the early 1940's when **** sent his air force to bomb the city.
Blitz shows the bond between mother and son, and the lengths one will go through to reunite. I was moved to tears by the kindness of others and the resilience George had to find his way back home. This is the kind of movie I'd like to see more of, and I'd like children to be exposed to, instead of another Marvel or DC Superhero fantasy.

Conclave7
Nov 24, 2024
Solid, well directed, and well acted movie.
An even better movie than I expected, and I was glad that I went in to see it cold, other than hearing from friends that Conclave really was a good movie.
It is possible to make a PG movie for adults that can hold our attention, and not pander to the lowest common denominator
And how great was it to see the lovely Isabella Rosseilini again.
I'm OK with this movie being an Oscar contender.

A Real Pain9
Nov 24, 2024
As of today--11/24/24--A Real Pain has the best chance so far this year as being MY #1 movie of 2024.
Comedies are hard to pull off, so a dramedy like A Real Pain was the right choice.
As much as I enjoyed Kieren Culkins' Benjy-tour de-force performance, it's Jesse Eisenbergs chararacter, David that is the real heart & soul of the movie who keeps the story grounded. We've all been around "Benjy's" who can walk into any room, and take over
But there are a lot more David's who have to deal with Benji's shrapnel.
I laughed and I cried.
Beautiful, heartfelt movie.

Small Things Like These8
Nov 17, 2024
Profoundly sad, but there's an important story to tell here
As parents we worry constantly about our kids
What goes on before, during, and after school?
Gillian Murphy carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and somethings not quite right when he drops off the local small Irish town's weekly alotment of coal.
His character Bill does not have to talk much
His sadness says it all
Something's wrong at the convent, and he has to decide if he's going to stand up to the stern Mother Superior and do what's really right for a change.
Great performances all around
Do not let the pacing of this story keep you from seeking this one out

Heretic6
Nov 13, 2024
I enjoyed Hugh Grants performance questioning 2 young Morman missionaries about their own beliefs about faith, and the existance of God. That part of the movie worked really well, and is a debate worth having. But once his character lured our innocent heroines into his torture dungeon, it became silly and it quickly lost it's way. The debate was worthwhile, but none of the characters were believable once all of the ugliness started. It's tough to shock an audience these days. Use your head. Not a shiv. Quit taking the easy way out.

Here4
Nov 13, 2024
Great concept for a movie.
I was all in until the story kept jumping around so much.
When you work with talented actors like Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, give them so breathing room to tell a story with some heart. Here felt like The History of the World crammed into 90 minutes.
It was too much, and not enough at the same time.
Nov 13, 2024
Anora9
Nov 13, 2024
Great story.
Terrific acting.
I slept through a good 30 minutes on my first viewing, but watching Anora a second time in less than a month proved my initial review to be an inexcuseable misfire.
Who doesn't love Anora?
Igor defintely has a crush.
Props to the entire cast, the screenwriter and the director.
One of the BEST films of 2024.
Enough, already.
Quit trying to imitate Quentin Tarantino, already.
Nov 13, 2024
The Substance5
Nov 13, 2024
Who doesn't like Demi Moore? What a career & life she has shared with the world Too bad The Substance went for "shocking" their audience instead of satirizing what hypocrites studio executives are when it comes to "out with the old, and end with the new" I swear that Dennis Quaid looked like the only actor who was in on the joke about how poorly the men who run Hollywood treat 'older" actresses. There is a story to tell about our desire to live forever
The Substance cheated it's audience rather than dealing with sexism and ageism head on.

Saturday Night8
Nov 13, 2024
Jason Reitman got it. He understood what Lorne Michaels wanted to put on TV some 50 years ago, & I'm sure it was anything but funny.
But the chemistry, the writing and the timing for something really different was there. Great cast Great story Great history lesson.

Lee8
Sep 29, 2024
Having just come back from Normandy, this movie was another history lesson that I so badly needed. Lee is all of us. Flawed, but with a good heart. No one should have had to live through the atrocities Adolph **** and his **** army inflicted on so many innocent lives during WWII. I am grateful that Kate Winslet chose this project and bring Lee Millers work as a photographer to life. Lee Miller was an unsung hero of WWII, and I'm glad I got to see this life changing part of her life. The movie is heartbreaking as all wars are, but we need more pioneers like Lee fighting for respect in a male dominated society. Her voice was every bit as important as the brave men and women she photographed.

Megalopolis5
Sep 28, 2024
Megalopolis was a swing & a miss for me. I understand the message Coppola wanted to tell, but this movie was all over the place. Some scenes where Adam Divers character worked for me as he tried to get his vision for a utopian society across. Other scenes, not so much. If I could recommend one good reason to take a chance on seeing Megalopolis, it would be to watch Aubrey Plaza have fun. She did a great job paying homage to Cruella Deville and she made me laugh. Overall, the movie is bloated and kind of all over the place. Good, but not great.

Alien: Romulus5
Sep 4, 2024
Ho-Hum.
Been there,done that.
It's tough to beat the first 2 Aliens movies.
This one is well made and the cast does it's very best to keep my attention.
But I've seen ENOUGH Aliens movies and this one broke no new ground.

Strange Darling8
Sep 1, 2024
Holy crap!
What did I just see?
As everybody **** see this movie cold.
Great use of color.
Fascinating characters with realisic dialouge of 2 strangers on a first date.
It's not a movie for the faint of heart, and many scenes are tough to watch, but this movie restored my faith in movies, and why I love to go.
I want to feel something, and this movie delivered and then some.

The Instigators7
Aug 26, 2024
I liked the movie a lot. It reminded me a bit of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. My favorite parts of the movie are when Matt Damon Casey Affleck, and Hong Chen argue amonst each other. Not only that you've got this wild cast of characters going after these "alleged" bad guys. The Instigators reminded me of the best 70's action buddy movies.

Blink Twice8
Aug 26, 2024
A WILD ride. Great cast w/ fine acting. This movie reminded me of Get Out, Nope, & The Menu. It is not for the faint of heart, and I still haven't made up my mind if I liked the ending or not. But the movie is a fever dream that you can't quite wake up from. The 3rd act is a slam-bang roller coaster of a finish. Bravo Zoe Kravitz.

Jul 27, 2024
Loud, obnoxios, dopey fun. Park your brain in nuetral, and just go with it. If you think about it too hard, you'll get really mad that you came and you won't be able to enjoy the movie. It is exactly what is advertised.

Kinds of Kindness8
Jul 5, 2024
This movie was NOT what I expected, but after sleeping on it, I've come to the conclusion that it's about human connection of wanting to be loved and excepted, as well as a movie about redemption.
Yes, there are moments of much needed levity as well as "close your eyes" shock horror.
But even real life can shock you in ways you never expected.
Kinds of Kindness grew on me, and it may very well be the BEST movie I've watched so far in 2024.
And I NEVER thought I would say that going in.
But it made me think, and that's never a bad thing.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 17
Jul 1, 2024
Epic storytelling.
I'm all in for Part 2 coming down in mid-August.
Great acting.
Breathtaking cinematography.
Yes, there are some slow spots and a number of characters to try and keep track of, but the pro's far outweigh any Cons I have about Horizon.
Jun 24, 2024
The Bikeriders7
Jun 24, 2024
The 2 songs I kept waiting to hear while watching this movie were Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf (Loved the Easy Rider shout-out late in the movie) and Mama Told Me Not to Come by 3 Dog Night every time Kathy (Biker Elvis's girlfriend and soon to be wife) entered any bar or outdoor get together with these bully Peter Pans, who follow Captain Hook played by Tom Hardy down the highway. It's a love letter to men and their bikes and their longing to be a part of something to doesn't conform to society's norms.
It's also a love letter to women who LOVE a bad boy and think they can change him. Of course Kathy represents common sense, and wishes she could bring her lunkhead husband back home. But he's a free bird who lives by the code of conduct of the Vandals and he won't be tied down. Tom Hardy aka Captain Hook, is also a father figure to the lost boys and he assures Kathy that he'll always have Biker Elvis's back as soon as trouble rears it's ugly head, which is quite often. It may sound like I hated this movie, but I didn't. It took me a while to understand and even sympathize with Kathy, but eventually all Peter Pans gotta leave The Lost Boys and grow up, Or get killed.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die4
Jun 24, 2024
I liked the 1st one so much, I really hoped that I'd like the next 3 sequeals at least half as much.
This one was by far the WORST of the 4 movies.
Was it horrible?
No.
Was it funny?
At times.
Did it make any sense, whatsoever?
Not really.
Was there action & stunts galore?
Yep.
Did it remind me of playing a first person shooter video game?
Yep.
And that was really annoying.
Put this series and characters to bed once and for all.
Enough already.

Fresh Kills8
Jun 22, 2024
Much better than expected for a low-budget Indie film.
Great cast and a sad story growing up as an innocent (or not so innocent) child of a Mafia mob boss. It's an interesting story of 2 sisters and their family growing up in their fathers shadow. Do you defend your family and your lifestyle above all else or do you question how you got here and who do the people who surround you who appear to love you hold so many dark secrets? My 3 word review of Fresh Kills? Only Women Bleed.

Ezra6
Jun 2, 2024
It's tough watching one of the greatest actors of the past 50 years get older.
But De Niro hangs in there and doesn't embarass himself when this well intentioned story veers off track and becomes schmaltzy and cliche. There is a story here that needs to be told. I don't fully understand autism, but I defintely understand family dusfunction. The child actor playing Ezra broke my heart. I just wish the story could have been a bit more believable. But I'm still glad I watched it despitse some of it's flaws/

The Fall Guy7
May 19, 2024
Far from perfect, but hugely entertaining.
Great chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
I like that they'll do anything to keep the action going at a breakneck pace.
My score went from a 6 to a 7 based on the ending and the credits.
The Fall Guy is a great date movie as long as you keep your brain in nuetral, and don't thin too much about it.

Civil War8
Apr 23, 2024
This was a tough watch.
It is unrelently violent.
And shocking.
And sad.
I was on the edge of my seat for the entire movie, and for once?
I didn't finish my popcorn.Civil War has a powerful message:
"War is Hell, people"
There are no winners in A Civil War.
Only losers.

Love Lies Bleeding7
Mar 27, 2024
This was a wild and crazy movie.
The less you know going in, the better, but be prepared for some bloody violence.

Easily one of the best new movies so far in 2024.

God & Country9
Feb 18, 2024
Yikes.
This may have been one of the scariest movies I've seen in a long time.
It's too bad the far Christian Right is WRONG about so many things.
We have to be so careful about who we choose as our future leaders.
It clearly didn't work for ****, but sadly clowns like Trump & Putin will cow-tow to those who are afraid of freedom of choice and real democracy. Go see this movie. It was a real eye-opener.

The Promised Land8
Feb 6, 2024
Great looking movie.
See it in the theater if you can.
Plenty of interesting characters that kept me invested the entire movie.
The abupt violence was shocking at times, but it doesn't detract from this powerful story of good vs evil, and man vs nature.

All of Us Strangers7
Feb 1, 2024
Better than I expected.
Very heartfelt movie about love, loneliness, loss, and regret.
It's about how we choose to share intimate stories about ourselves, and how we deal with our past.
I cried a couple of times, so it got to me.

The Zone of Interest9
Jan 24, 2024
This was a tough movie to watch (suffer through??) but it is important, and lest we forget atrocities like **** are still alive and well today unfortunately. Halfway through the movie I just started crying, and it wasn't just one scene that did me in. I can't say I enjoyed the movie, but I'm so glad I went. **** had his fans to do his bidding, and it's amazing how carefree people got swept up in his fervor.

American Fiction7
Jan 8, 2024
When American Review was in satire mode--I was right there with it laughing, and enjoying the movie. Genuine, heart-felt laughs and great writing.
But when things in real life got serious w/subjects like death, alzheimers, dysfunctional family members and broken relationships?
I couldn't wait to get back to the satire part of the story.

Ferrari7
Jan 3, 2024
Not bad. Not bad.
The Italian countryside, and the villages the Ferrari's and other sport cars are driven through make up for the stubborn Enzo Ferrari.I know very little about the man himself, but he seems both driven to succeed and quite selfish. That made me more sympathetic to those around him including his put-upon wife, and the various drivers he hires to race and represent the Ferrari name. The racing sequences are top tier, and the stunts rival the most recent Mission Impossible movie.

Poor Things8
Dec 31, 2023
I expected the worse, but I was pleasantly surprised just how raunchy and funny this movie turned out to be.
Emma Stone's Bella wears her heart on her sleeve as she nievely leaves the safety and comfort that Dr. "God" (aka Dr. Frankenstein) gave her.
I laughed a lot.

Leave the World Behind8
Dec 26, 2023
Man. I sure didn't see this one coming. Julia Roberts wasn't her usual loveable self. In fact she was downright obnoxious and a borderline rascist. But that was the point of the movie. It was a reflection of us as a society, and showed how quickly we are to pass judgement on people when things don't go our way. This movie was a huge eye-opener and I was hooked the moment the family left for a vacation none of us will ever forget.
Dec 24, 2023
The Iron Claw7
Dec 24, 2023
Fascinating family, but just incredibly sad.
Another case of a parent who failed in his own life and tried to gain success by forcing his insane beliefs on his loving childen who did their damndest to please him. Lucky for the Dad, he bullied his wife into believing that what he was doing was for their own good.
Be careful for what you wish for, Dad.

Maestro9
Dec 11, 2023
Give the Oscar for Best Actress to Carrie Mulliagn.
Sparks fly when the lovely Felicia meets up and coming Maestro Leonard Bernstein.
Only life with Leonard gets messy.
No marraige is ever perfect, and living w/Bernstein has just as many "ups" as it does "downs".
Maestro is a beautiful movie.
But it's Carrie Mulligans put-upon wife Felicia that broke my heart

Poor Eileen.
She's lonely.
She has major "daddy" issues.
And she works at a prison for boys.

Oh boy, is this movie DARK.

Watch a family unravel when Natalie Portmans character enters their lives and brings out many disturbing truths as she "method acts" learning about Julianne Moore's controlling "mother" character who made tabloid headlines back in the 90's by having an affair with a 13 year old boy.
I was gripped by this small but powerfully devastating movie.
Great performances.
Great writing.

The Holdovers9

Nobody delivers a better witty bon mot than Paul Giamatti.
Yes, the movie is sentimental, but that's OK.
It reminds me to be grateful for what I have and sympathetic to those who have not.
Great script.
Excellent cast.

The Killer8
Nov 14, 2023
Chilling.
Thrilling.
Lots of blood spilling.
This movie was tough to watch because I had no idea what was going to happen next.
Michael Fassbender's portrait of a contract killer on the run made me really appreciate my dull, ordinary life. I know I wouldn't have the heart for The Killers line of work.
Great movie.

Fair Play6
Oct 16, 2023
Fair Play is what you get when you cross the "Me Too" movement with a bit of the old Fatal Attraction and Wall Street thrillers.
Good looking people reaching for the golden ring, and hurting one another, not with physical violence but with the mental violence of words and mind games.
This was a bit **** pleasure where I was able to forgive the 2 main leads when they were way over-the-top OVER ACTING, because just like back in the 80's Phoebe Dynevor is easy on the eyes as was Glenn Close & Anne Archer.
Ultimately--is the price one pays for sucess worth the heartache when jealously rears its ugly head?
Oct 13, 2023
The Royal Hotel8
Oct 13, 2023
This movie came out of nowhere, and I'm so glad I took a chance and watched it. The 2 Americans from Canada are very believable as best friends looking to see the world. It's too bad that they run out of money, and have to take a job in the nastiest bar stuck out in the middle of the boondocks of the Australian outback. And that's where things start to go south for our heroine's. They take as much abuse as they possibly can, and then..look out. Great fun, great acting and then enoughs, enough from the local bullies. Check it out.
