Touken Ranbu Warriors shows once again that Koei-Tecmo does a much better job in the Warriors series spin-offs than in the main Dynasty series, delivering a delicious Musou to be played, in every single aspect of the game, from deep characters to perfect environments. With missions that are shorter than usual, it is the perfect game for beginners in the genre.

Touken Ranbu Warriors offers exactly the kind of interaction between Touken Ranbu’s characters and musou mechanics that is only possible here, while maintaining the charm that makes the original property so beloved. Although some elements of the honmaru may not live up to the same high bar set by the missions, it’s still such a natural fit that the minor drawbacks seem less to disappoint and more to open up the possibility of future improvements. The ways Warriors intuitively expands the world of Touken Ranbu makes me excited for the possibility of other titles set across different time periods in Japan with the appropriate Touken Danshi and their previous masters. Although there’s no guarantee of what the future holds in that regard, I’ll happily return time and again to Touken Ranbu Warriors for its unique spin on the world of Touken Ranbu.

While it may not feel like a traditional entry into the Warriors style of spinoff games that most are used to, there is a unique feel to be found in Touken Ranbu Warriors. With an interesting setting that has both characters that are engaging and a unique play on its historical situations, there’s a lot to enjoy for anyone.

To say that the Musou games are repetitive is like saying water is wet. As a fan, I don’t mind the repetitiveness if the combat is fun and there’s characters and weapons to unlock. It’s mindless fun, and sometimes that’s what I want in a video game. The Touken Ranbu iteration brings a whole new layer of repetitiveness to the genre, with fewer characters, no exciting unlocks, and frustrating mission failures that seem entirely arbitrary. The maps are tiny. The largest might be about 1/8th the size of a Samurai/Hyrule/Orochi/FireEmblem/OnePiece map: most are even smaller than that. The enemy variety is the worst of any I’ve played to date. The addition of mini games is not well implemented. I don’t enjoy a single one of them and it’s clear that not very much thought or effort was put into developing them. This game feels like a lazy attempt to fill the time gap before Three Hopes is released. I predict this being the Musou game I give the fewest number of hours to.

The balance between fun interactions with the Touken Danshi combined with the easy-to-understand Musou combat all adds up to a really nice experience, if you were looking to immerse yourself into this Sengoku Period history from an interesting perspective. If you’re a Japanese history nerd who also enjoys Musou games that definitely have you think outside the box, definitely give this one a try!

Touken Ranbu Warriors has some great new ideas for the genre, but its lack of any challenge really lets it down.

An elegant but histrionic musou, far too simplistic and bland to appeal to those who are not fans of the original card game.

Giving up the winning features boasted by licensed musou launched between 2020 and 2021, Touken Ranbu Warriors was lacking in every respect. The reduced longevity of the bone, the absence of secondary modes and mechanics capable of differentiating the offer to a minimum, without forgetting a non-existent level of difficulty, make it a product that is absolutely not up to the current Omega Force standards. Therefore, for the most hardcore fans of the genre, we suggest that you be patient and jump straight into Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, which will take us back to the unforgettable continent of Fódlan in just a month.

Touken Ranbu Warriors is an extremely difficult sell for fans of Omega Force’s previous work, given how stripped back a product it is. Small scale battles that can be over in minutes, along with a complete absence of any meaningful progression or grind, completely rip the heart and soul from the now infamous 1 vs. 1000 formula. If you’re a fan of the Touken Ranbu franchise who has yet to sample a Warriors game, then you may find some joy in the depiction of the Touken Ranbu universe and the accessible nature of everything. For everyone else, however, it’s safe to say you can avoid this and hold out for the imminent release of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, which should hopefully have a little more meat on its bones for longtime Musou fans.
