Princess Mononoke is beautifully animated and the story telling isn’t lacking for imagination, but despite all the grand gestures, it’s never quite as engaging as the as the best the genre has to offer.

Absolutely breathtaking. Princess Mononoke isn't just another story about humanity vs nature, it is a true piece of art. The animation, color and art of the movie is beautiful beyond anything I've seen Disney do. As someone who has attempted animation myself, it's unfathomable to me how human hands can create something this beautiful. The writing itself, with its overarching themes of "humanity vs nature", is executed amazingly. It's difficult to imagine a fictional world more ALIVE than that of Princess Mononoke. The music, produced by Joe Hisaishi, is the cherry on top of everything. The orchestrated music that Hisaishi produced for this movie might be the best he has ever produced. Overall, this movie is a must watch!

There are films that enter theaters like ghosts returned—untouched by time, yet touched up, remastered, restored, clarified to within an inch of the sublime. Princess Mononoke in 4K is one of those revenants. The screen does not show you this world—it etches it into your retinas like scripture carved in obsidian. Miyazaki, the god-hand animator, the ink-stained prophet of spirits and steel, reaches across decades and dares you not to feel. And I felt. I hadn’t seen it before. Knew the name, knew the legend. “It’s Miyazaki,” I said to myself, with that trembling **** certainty of someone walking into a cathedral already half-sure they’ll cry. I didn’t expect disappointment. I expected reverence. What I didn’t expect was possession. Because let me tell you: this movie moves. It breathes with the syncopated lungs of forests and factories alike. Groups of characters don’t just walk; they ripple. Like mobs of thought, not people. Every background figure has an internal monologue, an imagined past, a full-spined purpose. It’s animation as clairvoyance. The sound—dear gods, the sound. The way tension flares like a wound exposed to saltwater, the way crescendos curl around your gut like a tightening serpent. Thrill, grief, awe—they rise not like score cues but tectonic shifts. The story—let's not pretend it isn’t one we know. Man vs. Nature. Progress vs. Spirit. It’s Avatar before Avatar, Pocahontas with teeth. But what made Mononoke unique wasn’t the bones of the tale—it was the blood that ran through it. That thick, mythic ichor, black with demonic hate, dribbling from gods corrupted by mankind’s hot machines and cold ambition. It’s the kind of allegory that’s too old to be trite, too primal to be cliché. We’re all born with darkness, it tells us. It just takes the right apocalypse to let it bloom. And the pacing? Tight. There’s no time wasted, no cinematic throat-clearing. We’re thrown in. The curse, the leaving, the gods, the ironworks—it’s a cascade, not a crawl. New characters unfold like tarot cards: strange, deliberate, fated. But—and here we drag the stone into the garden—that ending. Oh, that limp, unswallowed ending. See, up until the third act, I was fully possessed. But as the climax unspooled, as the forest god’s head went airborne, and consequences began to calcify, the script started reciting instead of breathing. There's a scene—a moment so discordant it deserves to be carved out and put on a museum pedestal labeled Why? **** turns to San. Looks her in the eye. And drops the most lifeless, unmoored, emotionally bankrupt “I love you” I have heard in recent memory. Not hollow like tragedy. Hollow like someone misread a prompt. My wife turned to me—confused. We both winced. Not because love in war is wrong. Not because the forest and the forge can’t fall into bed. But because this love wasn’t earned. We didn’t see their hearts knit together. We saw two warriors share glances and words, but no soul-churn. No ache. So when he said it, it landed like a feather dipped in lead. Then comes the non-resolution: San says she’ll stay in the woods. **** will live at the ironworks. And he’ll “visit her.” Like she’s an aunt. A pen pal. As if their hearts were not, just minutes earlier, allegedly interlocked by fate. And here’s the kicker. **** whole town? The one he left behind? The people who loved him, relied on him, waited for his return? Forgotten. Abandoned like a subplot in a draft left to rot. He trades a lifetime of connection for a newly-met pack of half-friends and a foundry that nearly ate the gods. It feels not bittersweet, not tragic, not even ambiguous—just written. Like an author’s hand guided the pen without the characters consenting. Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t need happy endings. Hollow doesn’t mean “it didn’t go my way.” Hollow means it rang false. Not because nature lost. But because the characters didn’t live their truth. Because their choices weren’t rooted in what we saw and felt. Because the ending wasn’t honest. And with a master like Miyazaki? That stings. It feels like a betrayal not of plot, but of belief. So yes. I loved the film. And I didn’t. Because sometimes a masterpiece leaves you with splinters.

I'm convinced this is the film Studio Ghibli spent its early years building towards. While previous efforts like Castle in the Sky and My Neighbor Totoro contained mythical elements - sleepy deities, spritely spirits, magic-tinged talents - the influence of god-level beings often feels secondary, relegated to a few enchanting (yet fleeting) glimpses. In Princess Mononoke, such divine creatures are essential, active participants. They speak, argue and swing their weight around. We aren't left to guess about their opinions or motivations, because their words and actions carry such a resonant influence. It's profoundly effective, a contrast between the seemingly petty concerns of human tribes and the mass and muscle of a much heavier entity. Mononoke represents a huge step up for the studio, particularly in that sense of scale. Rather than maintaining the quaint, intimate essence that typified their early output, this time Ghibli has gone sweeping and epic. Everything, from the ambitious, enveloping symphonic score to the wide, gorgeous landscapes and distinct environs, emphasizes this point. We've left the village to find there's a broad undiscovered world out there. Yet the distinguishing little touches and unspoken human gestures haven't been lost in the transition, either. It still looks and feels like a Miyazaki movie, calmingly earnest and heartstrong, but the canvas is larger and more powerful. And man, do they make the most of that promise.

One of Ghibli's most iconic movies. Mononoke captures a multitude of elements providing new things to think about after every watch. Fantastic cast for the English Dub and of course an amazing soundtrack. This movie is a must watch for any animation fan.

Definitely one of the better Ghibli movies. I didn't like that the characters seemed like they were rushing their dialogue, but that may have been an issue with translation. The pacing of this movie is solid, the characters are great, and the environmentalist message feels very natural to the plot. This film is more graphic than other Ghibli films, but it doesn't feel forced or like it's being done only for shock value.

Another timeless masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki, with a message that could not be more powerful and urgent, and told in the grace and beauty of excellent animation.

I honestly liked it more than I expected, the first half of the movie is decent but quite slow, however, the second half is great, and I really enjoyed it.

Few films, animated or otherwise, manage to capture or communicate the painful and false dichotomy of humanity as something apart from and opposed to Nature itself as compassionately as Miyazaki’s, Princess Mononoke. This agonizing conflict between Creation and the created is made all the more poignant by the shifting perspectives of good and evil. Gods, animals, plants, humans, spirits and demons— all are struggling to find their way as their relationships are strained by the encroachment of human greed and the accompanying callousness; almost all become victims of their disparate agendas. And let it be said, Princess Mononoke is indeed a film, as to call it a movie does injustice to the scope of storytelling and philosophical brilliance Miyazaki brings to the screen. That said, do watch the original subtitled Japanese release too, as some of the deeper meaning is watered down in the dubbed English version. I cannot say that any of the Western voice actors did an exemplary job— but thankfully Billy Crudup managed to bring a sincerity and earnestness to Prince **** that absolutely fits the character perfectly. Claire Danes is the weakest link, as the gravity of a few crucial moments is lost in her uneven and at times mechanical performance. It is distracting, but does not detract from the overall impact of the film. Set in a far more believable realm than most of Miyazaki’s other films, many of which tend to touch upon the magical and the mystical, the impact of the conflict between “ancient” and “modern”, the spiritual and the secular, is heightened by the story’s true protagonist, a seeker in the form of Prince ****. His role is unusual in that he is an embodiment of neutrality, non-aggression, and active altruism. He is not a conventional protagonist. He does not possess answers, or a vision, or even a distinct goal, other than bringing peace to others. It is the pureness of his being that emphasizes the relative nature of good and evil as seen through the eyes of each character, providing a steady moral compass for the viewer to check their own passions against. He is a person outside of time, with values from another world, a world he must abandon in order to meet his destiny. Conflict is brought upon him, and so he must seek out its source. It is clear that it has always been his agenda to preserve peace, for himself and others, but he is now stricken with a curse that will require all of his goodness to overcome. It is his “hero’s journey” upon which all of the drama unfolds. . There is no shortage of epic action and sweeping moments of grandeur to go along with humorous, mundane interactions. Needless to say, the animation is mostly stunning, especially during the action sequences and in the expressiveness of the characters’ faces, in general. And being a Miyazaki film, of course whimsical touches abound— but there is a realness and grittiness that reminds the viewer this is a real world, with high stakes that affect every character, and lawful consequences that might cause a cascade of salvation or devastation, depending on which way the wind blows. There isn’t a wasted line of dialogue or a careless frame of art in the entire film— every moment is purposeful, which is most palpable when Miyazaki’s representation of the Spirit of the Forest makes an appearance. It is impossible to not feel the reverence captured in this animated embodiment of the Ineffable. Without giving too much of the plot away, there is the constant sense of inevitability building up throughout the film, a creeping doom that culminates in an ending that feels too appropriate to actually be satisfying. Maybe you’ll feel the same way; maybe not. Miyazaki does not cop out, and you will be challenged from start to finish, questioning your allegiances within the movie, and in the real world, even after the ending credits begin to roll.

Beauty movie! Princess Mononoke is always on top for me, as are Jibo's soles

Oh putain de bordel de merde, quelle purge, ce truc ! j’ai dû le regarder en deux fois… et encore ai-je dû faire moult accélérations rapides à chaque fois afin d’accélérer la purge de tous les instants que constitue ce dessin animé de merde à la con, mauvaise, très mauvaise fable écolo-geignarde à deux centimes de yen ! C’est bourré d’incohérences, des incohérences dans tous les sens qui accentuent le côté grotesque de l’ensemble… de cette caricature de connerie d’histoire écolo-conne d’une naîveté confondante ! en outre, ça n’en finit pas ce machin, presque deux heures et quart de daube ininterrompue ! L’animation est comme d’habitude à l’ouest et il faut rajouter à cela le mauvais goût décidément récurrent et commun à la majorité des productions du Studio Ghibli ; un mauvais goût rédhibitoire qui vient encore mettre en évidence -d’ailleurs- l’incongruité et les inepties nombreuses d’un scénar définitivement à la ramasse. En somme, un animé navrant de nullité !

Easily the most mature movie Miyazaki has created, Princess Mononoke is an epic without equal in the animation genre and one of the greatest fantasy films in general. The characters are surprisingly complex as are the themes of the story. The animation is top notch for the years of it's release and holds up great even now, while the music score is nothing sort of outstanding. A timeless classic for sure.

Princess Mononoke is one of the best animated movies I have seen in a long time, and is up there with Studio Ghibli's best along with Spirited Away. I will say I am probably biased, as I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan, and love all of their films, I even like Cat Returns, which along with PomPoko is considered as one of the weaker Ghibli efforts. The animation in Princess Mononoke is absolutely stunning, with rich detailed backgrounds and brilliant character animation. The image of the Stag actually made my jaw drop. The music is fantastic as well, and although environmentalism is a subject matter very difficult to get right, what the filmmakers succeeded in doing was making a highly intriguing story that was not only original but succeeded in not being preachy at all. The film is also helped by the high calibre vocal talents of Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, Billy Bob Thornton et al (voicing quite remarkable characters) and a strong script. True, some of the images like the Demon Worm, may frighten younger viewers, but it is fair to say they were very powerful. All in all, Princess Mononoke is breathtaking and I recommend it highly. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Incredible film. It is such a touching and beautiful film that goes far beyond expectations. The film's message is as important now as it could ever be. This is why Miyazaki is one of the best film makers of all time.

I hadn't seen this film since I was a kid and now having watched it again, I enjoyed a lot more as an adult. I love how it wastes no time and after 30 minutes, the movie has already established so much about this world and it's characters. Needless to say the animation is stunning as well is the music, it really captures the tone of the film. This has always been the only Studio Ghibli film I'd seen but I'll be sure to watch a few more after this one.

It is my favorite Studio Ghibli movie and I was lucky to be able to watch it in cinema. Actually it was also my first Ghibli movie and I just watched it with a friend because he recommend it. It was an amazing experience as it had a great story with depth, characters that are well written, of cause the Studio Ghibli animations and an awesome soundtrack that I see as one of the best in animation. Lets start at the beginning: Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli were amazing. They produced animated movies that are considered masterpieces back then. The track record includes a lot of the best Japanese if not worldwide made ones. Today they have a few weaker movies in the line up but no catastrophes. The story is set in an unspecified year of the Muromachi period also know as Ashikga period in Japan which lasted from 1336 to 1573. The Emishi people who are original inhabitants of Japan (Like the Ainu) struggled with the Ashikaga government and are in hiding after they were driven off. A secluded and hidden village (No not Ninjas) of the Emishi is attacked by a demon. **** who is the last of heir of their rulers manages to kill him after a peaceful solution was not possible. With his last strength the demon wounded Ashikaga’s arm and cursed him. The curse will grow with time and kill him but also gives him more power at the price of fastening the process. The villages female shaman explains this to him and that the demon was originally a nature god and not a demon. He has to leave the village and could never return but may find a cure in the West were the demon came from. This is the set up of the story and the start of an epic adventure. It is an amazing story. There is so much depth and motives. Nature vs man, different world views and philosophies, heritage, conflicts and interests. You can watch it just for the story or analyze the motives, developments and actions of the characters. Then there is the atmosphere that won me over immediately. No other Ghibli movie worked this well and there is a lot of competition. The next strengths are the characters. All have believable motives, develop thorough the story and have great interactions. There is no simple good vs evil here. It has my favorite cast with ****, Lady Eboshi, San, Jigo, Moro and Hii. Also all the minor characters are good too. The depth and clear motives improve an already great movie. You always know why the characters act this way and what motivates them. The art style and animations were amazing back then as it is a staple of Ghibli movies. The soundtrack is a masterpieces and one of the best I have heard. Joe Hisaishi is a true master in his field and this has so many good tracks. The voice actors are a bit uneven depending on the chosen language. The original Japanese voice actor are amazing, the English ones are a bit weaker but definitely not garbage and the German are really good ( I am a native German speaker). Overall this is a masterpieces and one of my favorite movies. I fully recommend it and see it as timeless classic.

Masterpiece! Miyazaki gives us a story about nature and human greed, made in a magical and charming way told in a way that only Miyazaki can, this work of art and full of symbolisms everyone must see

Criticism of man's impact on nature and how society is corrupted. It is amazing how we see animations dealing with such serious issues and even though the film is from 1999, it is so current.

The movie follows what is essentially an isekai protagonist rather than the actually interesting Mononoke. Not even the brilliant animation can save the uninteresting story.

A pretty good movie that just wasn't made for people like me. It's beautiful to watch, but it's just bland or even grotesque many times. If you like Ghibli's other stuff, then you'll probably like this one too, but it's not their greatest work in my opinion.

Miyazaki's most gore piece that's actually rather for adults, I would say it's Studio Ghibli's darkest story and without a doubt their top 3 animations of all time

Has the usual problems of Japanese animated films (incoherent) along with the usual pluses (good animation).

This is my most favorite anime movie of all time!!! This movie is amazing and is absolutely gorgeous!

This film has a variety of complex themes (which are intertwined in their own way), yet you never feel overwhelmed. It creates it own world in which the plot takes place. The plot is the human vs. nature type of story. However, it shows both sides of the story and is left to the bias of the viewer to decide which side they're on rather than forcing you to take nature's side which is something a lot of those movies do. It has great voice acting and the animation is stunning. It is very inventive and subtle and never fails to amaze. This film is highly recommended.

My personal favorite Hayao Miyazaki film, I highly recommend it if you enjoy his other movies such as spirited away.

Overall, an amazing film, even if you think you might not enjoy Japanese animation, you should still give Studio Ghibli movies like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro a try.

"Princess Mononoke" is undoubtedly another gem of the Japanese animation Studio Ghibli. The story itself is very good, the characters and the message it conveys is powerful.

Best Visuals. Best Score. Great Voice Acting. Great Story. The Cream. That Sugar. The Richness. That Top Note. That's a 10. Will probably watch this once a year until I die.

Princess Mononoke is just a dull, completely unbelievable and surprisingly disgusting animated picture that simply surplus Ghibli's filmography, which titles are even more breathtaking that this one.

Transported to a mystical land of mountain gods and samurais, incredible artistry allows total and utter immersion into a familiar struggle of man vs. nature. Miyazaki yet again provides morally flawed characters so that no obvious individual villain can be identified yet it is clear that peace is the ultimate goal. This film would be a ten if it not for an ending which feels unjustifiably rushed after such an astonishingly gorgeous build up. Without a doubt one of Ghibli's finest and a shining example of unique story telling that could have only come from this studio.

The most mature opus of Hayao Miyazaki. The ecological plot, the dialogues a-la Shakespeare and the accidental/impossible love story makes it a mandatory. Not for children.
