One of the best cRPG's out there, with barely anything poor to say about it Owlcat delivers an incredible amount of quality content that would make every cRPG fan squeal in delight

If you like cRPGs and the Warhammer 40K universe, this is basically a dream come true. The main story is great, but the side quests, the world and its atmosphere, and the characters and companions are absolutely superb. The combat is fun, but I recommend speeding up the movement and animations; otherwise, it takes a really long time. Especially in the first act, when your builds are not online yet, and there are multiple fights one after another with a large number of NPCs. And the combat being turn-based suffers from the classic issue of a late-game powerspike. Even on the highest difficulty, I cleared all of the late boss fights within the first round before all of my characters, let alone the enemies, were even able to play. I would have appreciated some way of scaling the difficulty even further without using mods - something like the final boss fight from the Infinite Museion DLC, which targets the root of the action economy problem nicely. The voidship combat was also a fun twist, but if you are not a fan of it, there is a separate difficulty setting just for that. I played the game in the spring of 2026 and have not encountered any major bugs other than some achievements not unlocking, but most of them unlocked eventually on retries. Overall, this is a must-play for all fans of the universe and cRPG fans. Just be ready for a lot of reading and 100+ hours of playtime.

It's a truly excellent RPG experience. My first Warhammer 40K experience was captivated by this game. Your choices and their consequences weigh heavily on you every second. The action system is also very enjoyable. Anyone who loves RPGs should play it.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a really, really vast game. After more than 20 hours you start to feel confident, like you understand what’s going on — and then it keeps expanding. New systems, new layers, new information… and that feeling still happens even after 100 hours. If you enjoy this kind of experience — heavy on text and classic CRPG gameplay like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin 2 — and you have even a slight interest in Warhammer 40K, you’re going to love this. I went in knowing almost nothing about the lore, and came out understanding a lot more. The game teaches you its universe naturally, without ever feeling like a lecture — it makes you feel part of it. That said, it can be overwhelming at times. There’s so much going on that stepping away for a few days can make it hard to jump back in. It’s not a flaw, but it’s something you should be aware of — and you’re definitely not alone if it happens. With all that said… Abelard, close this review with a solid 90 after 112 hours of gameplay, and show these readers why I am the Rogue Trader.

Overall, a very fun and engaging cRPG with deep mechanics that did not feel as overwhelming as the Pathfinder series. The turn-based combat felt good, particularly once the character builds started kicking off. The main plot and side-stories felt well-thought-out and connected. The companions were good (I spent more than a little time agonising over dialogue choices due to investment). The Void Shadows DLC was great, while the Lex Imperialis DLC was fine. Honestly, the only bad things worth mentioning are the numerous bugs plaguing the Lex Imperialis DLC (audio files not playing, visual glitches, crash to desktop etc.) and some minor bugs in the main game (stuck on 100% loading screen, audio echo/muffling etc.) which required cleaning out the cache. But yeah, all in all, solid game.

As a Warhammer and CRPG enthusiast, I really love this game. Great story, characters, and gameplay. However, performance issues and combat encounter design can be very annoying at times.

I went into this with no Warhammer background. Some parts of the game were really cool and engaging, and the overall look and atmosphere were great. Sound design was solid, and systems like trading and ship combat helped the game stand out. The writing was very wordy and hard to follow if you don’t know the lore. Most of the game wasn’t voice acted, but when it was, the voice acting was way too slow, with long pauses and breathy delivery that dragged everything out. Combat got dull later on, with enemies turning into damage sponges that weren’t actually dangerous. Most items felt useless, abilities were badly balanced, and colony management was interesting but mostly extra busywork. By the end, I didn’t care much about the story and mostly just wanted it to be over. I still finished the game and enjoyed parts of it, but it has a lot of small issues.

Even though I'm an RPG fan, I've had no previous contact with the dark Warhammer 40k universe. After playing this one, I'm digging more and more. The game is quite heavy on text and moral decisions (it reminded me of Planescape Torment), which gave it more of an adult character and orientation. Plenty of encounters and turn based battles (I enjoyed them all, but they could be tiresome for some people). Great music scores and character development for all your team members. Graphics are good and loading times are decent on my SSD. Excellent game, got me waiting for the sequel!!

I like Warhammer 40k and i'm old enough to remember when It was called Rogue Trader.
This is a good game, so good that I'll buy some pdf of the pen and paper rogue trader rpg.
At the time of my review it has some bugs (September 2025) : for example some ability dind't work properly somethimes, but nothing game breaking.
Very good characters and finally a 40k game that is not only dedicated to Space Marines. In his department it's a solid 8 or 9 game

Could be so much more, unfortunately all of its gameplay and functionality is broken and you have to deal with the quirks of the game instead of the game itself.

Horrible confusing gameplay. Most abilities are useless made just for uplifting or downlifting units stats. Too much grind during battles and annoying bugs also trying to read columns of texts to understand the story is a pain if i wanted to read that much i would open a book and not play videogames. Difficulty is all over the place sometimes enemies are easy sometimes are extremely hard and space battles with your voidship are boring and not enjoyable.

Unbalanced complicated combat with many useless buffs where enemies can be easy or extremely hard especially from Act 2 and later and the game does not warn you about level difficulty.. Useless chit-chat with huge texts to read i want to play a game and not read an essay for freak sakes. Spac.e ship battles are also uninspiring there is nothing epic about them. Not the RPG i was hoping it's like a game made in Excel with spreadsheets

Take a bit of fallout, baldurs gate, xcom, put it in a warhammer 40k shaped mold and you've got Rogue Trader. The game looks good but the combat is shallow while the mechanics behind it are unnecessarily complicated and obtuse. Some abilities are very complicated, requiring hyperlinks within the ability itself, requiring referencing multiple things while trying to reference things. And much of all this complication amounts to a hill of beans or worthless or super situational abilities. And with how often you level up and every class being so different having to read what abilities do before you pick them over and over and over again gets very tiresome. And there are dozens of abilities to choose from. I will give props to one mechanic that this game has that the xcom series desperately needs. You can select the tile you intend to move to and you will be able to see if you will have line of sight and % chance of hit before you make the actual move.

As always, all heresy must be PURGED!! By the the Emperor's will!! Story telling is awesome, setting is awesome, everything with this game is awesome!489 hours in game and still kicking. Cant wait for next DLC. Combat and character building possibilities are great, if you don't mind spending hours understanding combat and learn by heart all talents and archetypes :-D There is tons of unique items with unique abilities, which add extra strong layer and flawour with plenty of possibilities.

If you love the lore of Warhammer 40k, and turn based RPGs, this if for you. It's a wonderfully grimdark exciting story like baldurs gate but you can sentence people to death very often

An amazing CRPG in the universe of Warhammer 40k. Gameplay was solid good turn-based, script and dialogues are amazingly writen and it trully gives you a deep dive into the lore and the grim darkness of 40k. I hope they make it a series and make another game of Rogue Trader. I gave it a +1 onmy rating for having cross-play.

Rogue Trader is the best Warhammer game to date. It stands out with its deep writing and captivating characters. Ulfar and Abelard are true comrades, bringing a sense of masculinity and loyalty to the game. Kibella, with her unique backstory, and Cassia, combining innocence with cruelty towards the poor and unbelievers, add layers to the narrative. While the gameplay is intricate, especially on the "Fearless" difficulty, where battles can feel repetitive, the game maintains its charm. The graphics are solid, and the atmosphere is simply stunning, though more variety in the soundtrack would enhance the experience. This is not just another Warhammer game; it's a true masterpiece

A very deep, long-lived RPG that leaves great decision-making freedom and that makes exceptional use of the Warhammer 40K license, if you like role-playing games and especially if you are passionate about the license give it a chance!

Owlcat's most coherent and complex CRPG to date and a fantastic entry into the Warhammer 40K universe, held back by the usual Owlcat bugs, cut content, and a very lackluster Heretic experience. They love to tease "evil" walkthroughs in their games, but they never quite think them through till the end.

A phenomenal game but suffered from weaker later chapters & end game as well as some poorly developed gameplay mechanics. Probably the most immersive Warhammer 40k game out there. Lore is vast and deep. A near accurate depiction and translation of the WH40k universe. Characters and companions are well written and varied. Its partially voice which was a shame but the VAs nailed it. World building is insanely good. It starts out strong in the narrative up till chapter 3. Chapter 4 was absolutely weak while Chapter 5 and the ending was anticlimactic. Combat is isometric party turned based. Compared to other cRPGs, the mechanics & builds are easier to learn and much more simple but still has a touch complexity to it. Was a lot of fun. Other gameplay mechanics though were kinda lacking. The empire/planet management was shallow while the void combat(space combat) needed a lot of work. Its the standard semi open world RPG where you can travel to different locations(planets, stations) to complete quests, trigger events or explore though the scale is noticeably small. Overall highly recommend for cRPG enthusiasts & narrative focused players although the general RPG crowd might enjoy it too however since its a cRPG, there's a lot of reading to do.

Rogue Trade does an amazing job of bringing the Warhammer 40K lore to a CRPG. The games art and story feel like WH4K. The characters act as you would except and the lore is faithfully followed.

This game might paint you a sense of freedom and a universe full of intrigue. It is not. Mechanics are shallow, flash game tier. Writing suddenly changes into Game of Thrones last couple seasons at some point, making you feel remorse for getting hooked up in first place. In the name of not spoiling, I will just say this: you realize none of the ambitions of the characters make any sense to begin with. Not to mention you have a Warhammer 40k game where a chapter of Adeptus Astartes acts like friggin Irish farmers who had to join military because their potato crops went bad. THIS GAME IS HERESY.

Not a bad game. Not a very good one either. I've played the other Owlcat Games, and they were a blast. This one felt like 'meh, I guess this is okay'. The story feels cheap and lighthearted, more like something I would expect from a Pathfinder game. People dying does not make the game grimdark. I'm not a big 40K nerd, but this felt underwhelming as the lighthearted tone and the careless characters do not fit with the universe. Also, if you know nothing about the lore, do not expect the game to spell it out loud.

I went on a break here and spent almost the entire weekend in W40k Rogue Trader, it was great, I only completed chapter 1. The game has drawbacks like battles on spaceships (sea battle 🫤), but apart from such solutions, the game immerses me perfectly and reminded me impressions of Phantom Doctrin (battles) and dialogues of Disco Elysium. I think this is exactly the case when a game about 40k worked out, and the warp is felt both madness and hopelessness, and faith in the emperor, and even its validity, and tech-priests who pray to God the machine and when they wave the censers look like Orthodox ones, it’s all amazingly put together

This was my first 40k experience and overall it was great especially the lore. An excellent crpg with some issues sadly. There are a looooot of bugs. Some known and some niche ones. Also there are a lot of game states you can soft lock yourself. -1 one point for that. Also the game is very unoptimized.

Loved pathfinder : kingmaker, Liked Pathfinder : WOTR. CRPG is one of my favorite type of games. I'm giving this a 4 because a lot of work has been put into it but the final product is quite bad. The writing was awful. As a non 40k nerd,I failed to understand most of what was happening and not just side stuff about the universe but the actual story of the game. I ended up being at places doing stuff and having no clue what was happening. There are walls of text sending me in the most confusing state. Awful experience. The combat system is pure garbage. You spend your time buffing/debuffing and applying 100 passive effects instead of having a fight . In the second part of the game, if you have a sniper with 2 officers you will literally finish every fights without the enemy doing anything because you just one shot everything on the battlefield before enemies have achance to play their turn (in hard difficulty) The leveling system is a chore. You level up very often and have to read through the 100+ talents everytime to chose something you have no idea what the impact of will be because it's drowned into 100 other passive effects... Also,I'm not very demanding in the graphic department but they need to update their engine... Won't recommend unless you're either a 40k nerd or in need of a new CRPG and very bored...

Rogue Trader is an outstanding game for the most part. Unfortunately, it falls apart a bit towards the end with bugs, inconsistencies in the story and unfortunate dialogue choices.
Inventory management is not great and the constant interruptions during warp travel are annoying.

Great game with a ton to offer. So far 90% of the bad reviews ive seen have been about how the game is buggy, which is fair but I don't think that means this game should be getting 1 out of 10's. In all fairness this is a 7 or 8 out of 10 but I'm putting 10 to even out the 1's. Great game if you enjoy the crpg style of game and love the warhammer universe. Trust me give it a shot

It's a truly awesome game, one of the best ones I've ever played. Very well written, with a clever level design and a great angle at the WH 40K universe. There are some bugs, but at that stage none of them is game-breaking.

An excellent CRPG and an excellent Warhammer game. The gameplay is really good, with great narrative to boot.
This game also allows you to take a closer look at regular citizens of it's world and their philosophy — a feat which few other WH40k materials accomplish.
-1 point for so-so UI and last decade graphics (though the art direction is very good)

Well, good idea and graphics. I would love to love and play such game. But the game is in ruins. Abilities doesn't work, quest progression bugged, graphics is a total glitcht, forget about any optimization. Even after month of patches it's still playable... Such a disaster...

It was one of the most broken games I've seen in a long time. I played 80 hours but it left me tired as if 80 years had passed. They released the game in an even worse state than Baldur's Gate 3. I guess this is a new trend for game developers. They release buggy as hell and early access games as full versions. After releasing the things that need to be fixed and added before the release, they complete it with updates and additional DLCs. On top of that, they expect extra money for these DLCs. Looking at the current state of the game, it should definitely be avoided. I can easily say that the game was released 1 year early and it will take that long to fix it. The only reason I gave the game this score and was able to finish it is because it's connected to the Warhammer universe, otherwise it really wouldn't have gotten a score higher than 0 from me.

Pros:
- reasonably deep (though tedious) character builds
- reasonably diverse combats
- reasonably rich world and lore Cons (descending order):
- Too easy. Yes I am a hardcore spreedsheating min-maxer, but basically after the end of act 1 there is no challenge (highest difficulty). Too many broken things (like make your whole party except the tank low prior targets) and you get too many too powerful items generally.
- LOOONG and frequent loading screens. Not just when you enter big new areas. 10-30sec loading screen every time when you enter your tiny commandment area or access the small world map.
- bugs everywhere (skills and talents not working a skill that should damage the enemy heals them so on and so forth)
- Subjective but I didn't really cared about any of the chars. The story starts of exciting at act1 then act2 is kinda ok act3 was really boring then I got tired and quit the game at act4 ( cause of no challenge, boring story and long loading screens). Summary:
It isn't a terrible or even a bad game. It is very well enjoyable if it matches your priorities about a game. (It didn't really mached mine)

Awesome Warhammer 40k experience. So many options for roleplay, atmosphere, sound and visuals are incredible! Met a few small bugs in a lategame, but it's nothing
