Although Echo Generation 2 is a thoroughly enjoyable deckbuilding RPG in its own right, it drifts a little too far from what made the first game so special.

Echo Generation 2 is a pretty adventure that doesn’t have a particularly compelling hook.
70
If Echo Generation 2 manages to consolidate the groundwork laid by its predecessor, it doesn't fully succeed in daring to explore new territory. It undeniably hints at a potential that is only partially realized, especially in terms of situational variety and character development. It remains a title capable of drawing players in through atmosphere and style, though less convincing when it comes to delivering surprises over the long haul.

Short and charming sequel to the first game that improves on the gameplay by adding a deckbuilding element to the turn-based combat. There are a variety of storylines and characters the player cycles throug before the decks can become overpowered and stale. The storyline is still the same incomprehensible mishmash of random settings and pop culture references.

I absolutely loved Echo Generation 2 and it will undoubtedly be on my Game of the Year list for 2026. Its narratives mix of charm, horror, comedy and heart is something delighted and kept me guessing as I played it. And with the game launching on XBOX Game Pass, I really hope a lot of players take the opportunity to experience what I am calling one of the year’s best RPGs.

Echo Generation 2 is an update of the first game: capable of giving a more mature identity, thanks to a sci-fi setting with references to the ’80s and ’90s and a rather interesting storyline. The game is supported by a new combat system, which combines the classic turn-based system with deckbuilding. Cococucumber managed to create a more dynamic and unpredictable gameplay. All of this is seasoned with a high-level artistic component, thanks to the wise use of voxel art.

Overall Echo Generation 2 is a very interesting and well made follow-up. The gameplay offers a nice blend of RPG and deckbuilder that doesn’t leave story or style behind for the pure mechanics. The often switching characters you are in control of are both a strength and a weakness though. On one hand it offers many different gameplay styles and mechanics in a very compact package. On the other hand, it makes the game seem less focused overall. The almost complete lack of tutorials or hints also make this a very hard sell for people who mostly wanna play for the story or the vibes because despite its looks the game offers a lot of customisation and depth.

Despite some missteps, Echo Generation 2 is a bold, imaginative follow up that fans of the original - and fans of quirky sci fi RPGs in general - will find plenty they enjoy. Just be prepared: the final duel might test your patience more than your deck building skills.

There are a few bright spots without question, and the visuals are clearly one of them. I also fundamentally love the type of combat the game features, as I simply find it fun to fight using cards. But even though these two factors shine, Echo Generation 2 will unfortunately go down as one of the bigger disappointments of the year for me.

Echo Generation 2 is, for better or worse, quintessential Cococucumber: the closer you look at its aspiring RPG mechanics, the more its weak story, unfocused themes, and unnecessary gameplay systems begin to stand out. Thankfully, the developer’s talent still shines through in its gorgeous presentation, strong visual design, exotic locations, and entertaining mix of boss fights and deckbuilding possibilities despite the simple gameplay loop. Those qualities save Echo Generation 2 from falling into a deeper disappointment, and if you treat it as a casual in-between game, there’s just enough satisfaction to be found.
