In theory a lot has changed in the latest Dynasty Warriors (open world being the most notable addition) but in reality it’s the same game. It can be really enjoyable and at times impressive in terms of scale, but I got bored with it quite quickly. [04/2018, p.72]
It’s such a shame to see the state of this franchise in 2018. Dynasty Warriors deserved better than this, and I hope Omega Force gets another shot to do this franchise justice, because this is not how the tales of the Three Kingdoms should end.

A tweaked combat system and open world are welcome, but more inspiration is needed. [Apr 2018, p.72]

A laughably bad entry. Prepare for pre PS2 graphics, half baked open world mechanics, series-worst character interactions, and the absolute best part…… a sprawling open world with absolutely nothing to do or see. This game is a proverbial slap in the face to all DW fans. Never in my life…

the worst musou game. Buggy, slow, pointless running. Doesn't respect your time or understand what someone wants from a musou game. I think the devs played skyrim and assassin's creed for the first time then forgot what their product vision was.

Koei Tecmo has done a remarkable job of telling the many stories of the many people that make Romance of the Three Kingdoms such a compelling book and period of history, and the beautiful cinematic consistency makes it the most perfect realisation of everything Koei Tecmo has been aiming for with this series over many years now.

The transition to an open world has not been easy, quite rough in fact. Still, Dynasty Warriors 9's many changes to the musou formula hold great promise for the future. This is the rebirth the series needed, regardless of its issues.

It’s fun yet flawed, and while it would be recommended to fans of this style, the recommendation comes with caveats. It doesn’t quite excel at being a traditional Dynasty Warriors game or taking the formula to a new open world format, but does a good enough job at both where it’s enjoyable but not exceptional.

If you're into the idea of playing an open world game where its arcadey elements are entwined with therapeutic but sometimes dry exploration, give it a shot.

Dynasty Warriors 9 moves into an open world and suffers because of it. The world itself is lifeless, the hunting gimmicky and missions design repetitive. Wiping out armies single-handedly is still enjoyable however, with plenty of characters to unlock, it's just a shame the game doesn't do more with its obvious potential.

The lack of multiplayer, missing alternate game modes, and emptiness of ancient China left me far from satisfied.

Dynasty Warriors finally gets the overhaul it’s long been waiting for… and while it addresses a few old problems it creates just as many new ones.

I think the game is GREAT! I have them all and played them all. People are so salty. Knock it off.

While this DW game is far from perfect, most of them are. KT has tried something completely foreign to their dev team and it shows, but core parts of what make DW games fun is still present if your willing to look past the janky open world and some technical hitches you may catch yourself having a good time. While I was expecting a little more from the first nexgen DW game I am still having a good time after 15 hours which to means I'll probably keep playing. I still miss 2-player splitscreen and the lack of extra play modes is a little upsetting but they tried something out of their box and the get kudos for that.

Definitely not as bad as you think. I have played every Warriors/Musou game released in the west. Some are good, some are bad. Being a longtime fan of the series I looked forward to Dynasty Warriors 9 quite a lot. Started playing the game a couple of days ago and first impressions were really bad. Horrible frame rate, worst voice acting since DW2, repetitive combat even by Warriors standard and overall a disappointing experience. I'm also not a big fan of open-world games anymore, since it's in every damn game nowadays. And the world in DW9 is kinda boring. The only thing I could think of while playing the first hour was: "this is not the game I've been waiting for since DW8, almost 5 years ago". But then the patch came out and the framerate got a lot better, and I gave it a few more hours, and oh boy the game got better. The combat is kinda smooth and the new combo system is quite nice. I like the way the story is handled, kinda interesting to see a new way of telling the same old story in Dynasty Warriors. The big open-world is still boring but it's starting to grow on me, especially since it's the only gameworld where I really feel like i'm taking part in a huge battlefield. Even with it's ups and downs, I do respect Omega Force for trying something new. It might not be the Dynasty Warriors 9 I wanted, and compared to Dynasty Warriors 8 it's a step back, but if you're a fan of Warriors/Musou like me, then give it a try. It gets better, you just gotta give it some time. Just remember to change the voices to japanese or chinese.

The open would is an interesting take on the Dynasty Warriors games, but it doesn't excuse the lack of content and the boring world to explore. Just stick to Dynasty Warriors 8.
