Given my limited knowledge of Digimon, I was not expecting to enjoy Digimon Story: Time Stranger all that much but it really surprised me. The game has a good story and it’s just overall a good turn-based RPG. The game is quite long and it has a lot Digimon to filter through if you’re going for adding them all to your list. If you like RPGs such as SMT, be sure to give this game a try. Even if you don’t know anything about Digimon, you can easily pick this game up and enjoy it like I did.

Digimon Time Stranger has, at its core, almost everything a Digimon fan could want. A huge range of over 400 Digimon with the best 3D models ever, gameplay mechanics that celebrate the franchise's history, depth in the digivolution system, and even the possibility of improving the relationship we have with our Digimon. I don't believe, therefore, that the uninspired story, generic characters, and lack of real challenge will deter hungry Digimon fans from Time Stranger, which remains one of the best and most promising entries in the franchise.

Digimon Story Time Stranger is a beautiful entry in the series, standing out for its story, the number of creatures, and its combat system. However, it’s somewhat held back by its slow pacing.

I only finished this game to have a sense of victory, because it truly is terrible. You just feel exhausted when playing this. I walked away feeling more frustrated than entertained. I literally fell asleep countless Times DURING grinding. Not in the endless and pointless cutscenes. Literally grinding. The good parts of the game are the huge number of digimon and the digivolution system. But that's about it. It kmis such a badly paced RPG that it annoys the player more than anything. The story drags, the dialogue never stops, and The Operator constantly talking in your ear absolutely murders any sense of momentum or atmosphere. Every few minutes the game interrupts itself to explain something unnecessary, repeat information, or force another dull conversation. And I'm a huge fan of Clair Obscure, so I like cutscenes and chitchat between characters. The difference is that it has to make sense. Sometimes I got the impression the game was designed for kids under 5, because the level of idiotic explanation it does is ridiculous. Combat starts fun enough, the Digivolution system is still addictive, and collecting Digimon remains satisfying, but the game quickly collapses under its own grind. The EXP gain is absurdly low, even by JRPG standards. A single-player RPG should not feel like unpaid labor. After a while, the repetitive battles, endless backtracking, and constant leveling requirements become mentally draining. But if you buy the DLC of extra dungeons than the game becomes ridiculously easy. The base game is already ridiculously overpriced. The quest design might honestly be the worst part. There are missions asking you to collect 13 or 15 hidden objects that do not even appear on the map. The game calls this “exploration,” but in reality it’s just wasting the player’s time. Then there’s the infamous fruit quests. A fruit is hanging from a nearby tree, you literally have flying Digimon with you, and somehow THEY cannot grab it. No, YOU have to slowly climb up and get it yourself. Then there’s another fruit. Then another. Whoever designed these quests should never be allowed near game design again because this feels like parody. And don't get me started on the voice acting. Some parts of the game are voiced. And many, even more important ones, aren't. Which makes ABSOLUTELY no sense. Sometimes I swear I wanted to enter the game and kill the operator. Jesus what an annoying character. Between the operator and the three annoying, useless and out of place kids everytime I entered that God forsaken theater I could feel my serotonin and dopamine levels dropping. The dungeons for the optional quests are repetitive, the world design is extremely linear, and parts of the interface feel weirdly cheap for a supposedly premium RPG. And to be honest, the main story is also VERY repetitive. How many times does a "Greek god" digimon does something stupid and you end up entering that theater? And then you save them doing almost exactly the same things you did before. (The part where the dilemma is to go watch your friend's anime or save the digiworld is truly laughable). The Digimon roster is fantastic, the evolution mechanics are still satisfying, and underneath all the padding there is the skeleton **** good RPG. But the endless grind, horrible pacing, lazy quest design, aggressive monetization, weak storytelling, and insultingly easy pay-to-win balance completely suffocate that potential. Digimon fans deserved better than this. Much better. Worst money I spent on games in 2026 (and I bought the "Spike Volleyball" game, and that is saying something).

Great game not just a great digimon game as much of th critics like to undervalue this masterpiece...
In my opinion there are better stories of digimon DW3 and lost evolution are more complete on storyline...
This is the first time that the game gets recognition but somehow pokemon fans (critics) rated it lower than the new pokemon game...
Im curious what metric they used and what standards it had to put this game lower, not graphically, not story, not contents, not gameplay mechanics... and not even the Megas... lol...
Digimon has always been better on anime and games...
After so many years of Marketing and fake reviews, finally digimon gets the throne...

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a must-play video game for fans of the series and newcomers alike. It has extreme complexity in the Digivolution and Personality system, but it is also super easy to get your hands on and play.

Time Stranger marks an exciting new chapter in the Digimon Story series, packed with fresh and refined features that every monster-taming and battle enthusiast will appreciate. Once the story gains momentum, it proves to be engaging and well-written — but even before that, there’s so much to explore and do with your Digimon that you’ll hardly know where to begin.

Digimon Story: Stranger is not only one of the best representations of the brand, but it is also a solid, deep, and very fun JRPG.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a good JRPG that every player needs to discover, thanks to a very enjoyable combat system.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is the best Digimon game we’ve had. The graphics and nuance are absolutely stunning, and the game offers a solid turn-based JRPG experience. But with its pricetag, it feels like it’s missing just a bit of polish. For Digimon fans, though, Time Stranger is a must-play that will truly take you into the Digital World.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is very half-baked. After an incredibly slow start, and I'm the first to say that role-playing games take time and often grow enormously after a few hours, the colourful Digimon world is certainly fun to explore, but the disappointing technical aspects, the simplistic battles, the dull story, and the boring gameplay moments mean everything feels like half-baked fun at best.

One of the best RPG I've played so far. I didn't know digimon and I can say that this game is 10 times better than any pokemon game.
The story is absolutely insane.
Only con would be that the gameplay isn't extremely interesting but the digimon management is really interesting ! gret discovery!

Honestly can't understand how this is getting such glowing reviews. As far as the monster gathering mechanics go, it's good, but tedious in the sense you can't just capture something by fighting it once, you need to fight something over and over again sometimes accruing as little as 5% progress per kill, with 100-200% required to recruit it. The plot is good on paper, but poorly executed, I'm 60 hours in so far, and the game has taken me to every major area at least twice, and the latter half of the game has a nasty habit of having you replay the entire area you just completed due to time travel shenanigans. I'm engrossed enough to want to see how it ends, but not particularly happy about having to replay areas and trudge through anime slop filler conversations, not a single word that comes out of Inori's mouth has any bearing on the plot. The absolute worst thing about this game, are the digimon following you around. Now they had to make them follow you, because you're supposed to chat with them to change their personalities through a series of repetitive trite questions. However the further into the game you get the bigger most digimon are, they're programmed to run in front of you when you stop so they can be spoken to, but all this does is constantly block your camera, it's absolutely infuriating. So if you want a mid story, with cliche anime conversations, a series of decent but overused locales and a good but somewhat grindy monster collecting experience, check this game out.
