Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon is still fantastic, especially since the original was a major shake-up to the decades-old Pokémon formula. The update may be overly samey to someone who has already played Sun & Moon, but it does improve upon the base game in several ways. The new version is a must for newcomers to either this current generation or to Pokémon in general.

Pokémons improved in a visual and gameplay way. Devs could let go the monster management, but otherwise the changes are definitely for the better. If you have a weak spot for Pokémons, this is your game. [Issue#282]
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of Generation VII. Fans that already made the trip to the Alola region might find that it takes a while to get to the juiciest new additions to the game, but diehard Pokémon fans and those that held off on Sun and Moon will find a lot to enjoy. The games are truly robust experiences, and the new additions help flesh out a game that was already quite strong. I could detail more about the story changes and enhancements, Mantine surfing or Team Rainbow Rocket, but not much else needs to be said. This is a terrific Pokémon experience that has only gotten better.

Note that I am 100% biased towards this game, and I am ignoring the negatives that most people mention because I like it too much to care about those issues. Pokemon Ultra Moon is one of my favorite main Pokemon games, and I can't fully explain why. I was instantly in love with the world and improvements from previous games, and love the addition of the Ultra Beasts and Ultra Space. Yes, the regular story is better in Pokemon Sun/Moon, but I love the gameplay, Pokemon, and postgame more here. I struggled a bit with Ultra Necrozma, but once I succeeded, and discovered more of Necrozma's lore, I took a liking to this unique looking, jagged alien prism thing. Of course there are a lot of other smaller things (surfing minigames, improved pelago, rainbow rocket, better trials) but overall I just love this game. It does feel slow to start especially, and the dialogue is a bit over the top, but the story and all that hit different from the standard pokemon formula, and I hold this game dear to me.

Given the latest entries of the franchise, this game will be remembered as the last good PKMN game, peak 3DS technically, good gameplay and mechanics, and most important and what a Pokemon game true meaning is: Gotta catch em all! Full pokedex.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon represent everything Game Freak has worked towards in its 20 years of growing the Pokémon franchise. It has its flaws, as every game does, but they don't detract from the lively world, incredible writing, and sheer fun that the game provides. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are likely the last big games to be released on the 3DS, and Game Freak sees the console out with a game that will be remembered as a shining example of what the series can do when at its best.

Much more a refinement of what came before than a new entry, Pokémon Ultra Moon is very deceptive, as what begins as minor story and backdrop alterations becomes so much more as the game progresses. There is still a great sense of familiarity that may understandably disappoint for a full price purchase, but buyers will find what ultimately ends up as a title highlight for the whole series, and a tantalising glimpse into the future on Nintendo Switch.

the main reason i got my 3DS was to play this game, and i dont regret a thing. the gameplay is the classic pokemon formula, with the addition of honestly the best regional gimmick of all time; z-moves. the graphics are the peak of the 3DS library and is way better than the previous generation. the storyline is the only pokemon game to actually make me invested into the story and remember each of the character's names. in addition to all of these qualities, the character design is the best in the whole series. overall, this is the best mainline pokemon game i have played.

In short, these last games put an exclamation point at the end of an era, it's undeniable.

Unless you can't live without a few new pokémon, Pokémon Ultrasun is a must have if and only if you still haven't played neither Sun or Moon. Postgame content is meatier but most of the game looks and plays too similar to Sun or Moon.

For players that skipped Sun and Moon, there is more than enough new stuff here to make this the ultimate way to play. Returning players will definitely be left with a strong sense of deja vu, but if they finished everything last year's game had to offer and were hungry for more they could still get their money's worth here, especially if they're up for a big dose of nostalgia.

If you skipped Sun and Moon last year, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are must-buys. Sci-fi storytelling, plenty of new content and adorable critters all included, but feels too soon a release to make the most of the innovation.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are fine games by virtue of being Pokemon games. They have the same fun battling and collecting mechanics you’d expect and offer an opportunity to re-explore the gorgeous and lore-rich Alola region. But their butchered retelling of Sun and Moon’s story and the addition of the obnoxious RotomDex should once again have you questioning why you would pay full price for almost the same game a year later.

Everything that was great about sun and moon were improved with one of the hardest bosses in the series with ultra necrozma. The ultra wormholes are really fun to hunt shines and non shiny locked legendaries.

Real simple reason for the rating. The dialogue and characters. No traditional pokemon challenge.

43/100 Pokémon Ultra Moon adds a significant amount of new content to the original Moon, with a richer Pokémon selection, new areas that expand on the original lore, a surprisingly fun and polished new surfing minigame, new challenges and overall a decisively higher difficulty making for a much more engaging experience. Massive changes were made to the narrative as well, ultimately making it notably worse. As much as the new characters and plotpoints introduced have potential they're sorely underdeveloped and introduced quite haphazardly, and the greater scope of the new storyline often awkwardly clashes with the more intimate story told in the original game as some important scenes of character development have been entirely removed, leaving the whole narrative feeling somewhat disconnected. Nevertheless, a new grandiose story episode was added after the main campaign, which creatively builds on the new concepts introduced to craft a surprising narrative with nostalgic returns that perhaps doesn't take itself seriously enough, but still functions as an extremely fun postgame content and a nice celebration of past narratives. Decisvely better than the original, Ultramoon still greatly suffers from its terribly bland level design and the series' somewhat repetitive gameplay.
