Combat isn't the only fun thing the game has to offer. If you're in the mood for collecting and battling strange creatures, give the game a chance, it will serve you pleasant entertainment with beautiful visuals. [Issue#327]
Cassette Beasts is an addictive and fun videogame that pleasantly engages and excites. It offers a fascinating story and context, as well-implemented sensitive themes. A must have especially for the play structure.
Cassette Beats is generally a good game that takes the classic Pokémon formula and tries to iterate upon it in almost all areas. For the most part, the ideas are indeed a step up from the first few Pokémon generations, but the execution doesn’t quite come off in the pace of battles and its more obscure puzzles. The double-battle nature of the game and the beast customization offers players a great deal of strategy to engage with while listening to an excellent soundtrack. With such a broad open-world setting, RPGamers will likely find themselves immersed far beyond the fifteen hours of mainline content the game has to offer.

This game was the first creature collector that truly hooked me, aside from Pokémon. It struck the perfect balance of story, romance, combat, and side content.StoryThe narrative is captivating. You’re transported to another dimension where you must learn to fight using beasts captured on cassettes. Yes, cassettes—nostalgia for some, a mystery for others! With the help of other stranded citizens, you must explore the island, fight enemies, and unravel the mystery of how to return home. The story kept me fully engaged, encouraging me to pay attention to clues and details, as reading is key to progressing.Gameplay and PartnersThe main hub, Harbourtown, serves as your base of operations for buying items, upgrading gear, and accepting side quests. You start with one partner, but as the story unfolds, other characters join your team after completing their missions. You can only bring one partner at a time unless you play multiplayer, which offers a co-op mode with unique mechanics. My review focuses on the single-player experience.Building relationships with your partners unlocks personal side quests, offering meaningful rewards. These interactions add depth and keep the experience fresh.CombatThe turn-based battle system is simple but requires strategy. Each combatant starts with 2 Action Points (AP) per turn, which can increase based on your moves. AP management is key, as some powerful moves require multiple AP to execute. Battles with Archangels, the game’s bosses, introduce the Fusion mechanic, where you and your partner’s beasts combine into an ultimate form. Fusion doubles AP generation and enables devastating attacks, making these moments incredibly thrilling. Experimenting with different fusions became one of my favorite parts of the game.Side ContentThis game offers plenty of engaging side activities. Rogue Fusions are mini-boss fights featuring wild fused beasts surrounded by dark clouds. Defeating or capturing them yields valuable items and currency. Additionally, the Gauntlet mode introduces an endless train-based challenge. You battle increasingly difficult beasts and fused creatures as you progress through train cars, earning rewards. It’s a great post-game mode for players seeking more content.Final ThoughtsThis game impressed me with its mix of story, strategy, and unique mechanics like fusion. It’s an experience I highly recommend to fans of creature collectors and anyone looking for something fresh in the genre. With its engaging gameplay and robust side content, it’s well worth the investmentThanks for reading my ted talk! --- [82/100] --- I was looking for a Pokémon alternative in the monster collector genre and I stumbled upon Cassette Beasts. I decided to download it, and a few weeks later, I can safely say I don't regret it. The combat system and catching mechanics are original and well-executed, and the balancing between the various "Beasts" is also great, with none being excessively overpowered compared to the rest. The character design is excellent, and the plot is solid and straightforward. Speaking of game design, the player freedom deserves a special mention: the game practically lets you do whatever you want; it's up to you to decide what to do and when to do it. Huge credit must also be given to the tutorials, which can be tweaked to your liking in the settings menu, just like the accessibility and the game's difficulty management. There's a good amount of options to choose from regarding AI intelligence and level scaling/XP gain. The audio department is exceptional, built on memorable OSTs and a sound design that effectively accompanies the experience both during battles and exploration sequences. Moving on to the flaws, I found the gameplay to lack variety, consisting almost exclusively of battles alternating with exploration. This made the core gameplay loop feel quite tiring during prolonged play sessions (many times I couldn't push past the hour-and-a-half mark). I also encountered some issues with the game's optimization: from what I could tell, the map loads in chunks, section by section, and usually, there are no problems. However, there is a button that allows you to speed up the game. Well, with the game sped up and while dashing, the game freezes for a few seconds to load the map chunk you're moving into, and it's really jarring to look at. To sum up, Cassette Beasts is an excellent alternative to the giants of the genre, whether you're a hardcore fan or just looking to try it out. It's a really neat title!

Cassette Beasts has become the best game that I have played in the year, 2025! I really enjoy the characters the game has to offer along with it's story, and even the soundtrack which became one of my favorites to listen to over on music platforms! The overall gameplay was breath taking from an indie standpoint on a formula that felt so outdated in my eyes from a "Certain" company. I vibe with the graphics as well since I love 2D sprites in a 3D space, it always felt so amazing to look at in my eyes Overall, I do highly recommend this game to anyone who is interested on getting it! This game gets a perfect 10/10 from me, it's well deserved!

Cassette Beasts is simply one of the best Pokémon-like games I’ve come across, and I’m looking forward to earning a 100% completion. With a massive end-game and modder support built in at release though, I feel like I’m going to get very sidetracked on the way there.

The best Pokémon clone by a significant margin and arguably a more enjoyable experience than the more recent 3D games, with some clever new ideas and fantastic visuals.

Cassette Beasts feels very genuine. Whilst you can tell where the inspiration for certain choices has come from, the soundtrack, characters and story are all entertaining and heartfelt in a way that separates it from being just another Pokémon clone. Whilst the retro 80s design feels like a comforting warm blanket, the game isn’t afraid of inflicting a tonal shift into more Undertale-like otherworldly horror. You'd be forgiven for getting distracted in the gameplay loop of adventuring and collecting cute beasts, but underneath is a compelling and much more sinister story waiting to come out.

I had a great time with Cassette Beasts, but it was undeniably frustrating in places. It iterates on the Pokemon formula in nearly every possible way, and exploring the world via companion quests rather than just doing a big circle on your Gym challenge creates a wonderful sense of adventure. Cassette Beasts tries a lot of new things and most of them are successful. The story is compelling, the characters are engaging, and the battle system is one of the best I’ve ever used. It doesn’t pull everything off, but I’d much rather play a game that takes risks, rather than one that rehashes the same old formula time and time again.

One of the best turn-based games & "monster catchers" out there. You go around recording Beasts with a magical Cassette player, hence the name Cassette beasts, you can then transform into any Beasts you have successfully recorded. Everything is music theme & there's even singing when you're inside buildings, a tune that will get stuck in your head for better or worse. There's a social sim dynamic where you can choose to bring along certain NPCS & build your relationship with them, including a dog. These partners also fight with you in battle & give you their own quests. There's a lot of side quests besides the main one which is going around beating Ranger Captains & eventually taking on the Archangels around the world, which are the real boss fights. Finding new Beasts & choosing what they "remaster" into is stays fresh & exciting throughout the game & on top of that there's a cool Fusion mechanic, which isn't some cheap shiny gimmick or mega lame stuff, you can Fuse any two Beasts together in battle & form an unstoppable monster. This game is worth every penny & more.

This game is ok for a monster catching game. Though you don't catch them, you record them and then become the **** monster designs and weird uniqueness of the world is the best part of the **** game does have interesting ideas such as having stickers you can peel off instead of fixed skills. And I like that as long as you are recording a monster it can't be defeated, so you don't lose it if you do too much damage, though some are very hard to record and require a lot of attempts before success and some can wipe you out before you record them.Everything about the game feels half arsed including the ending and not executed well. It's an interesting idea. But the gameplay, dialogue and characters are rather lacklustre. And I find exploring the world rather dull though. And the game overall is very grindy.Post game the Ranger board quests are so repetitive and boring. Even when you force yourself to complete 100 of them you still have to do more if you want to get to lvl 6 ranger rank to be able to get harder orb fusions. I got so sick of it I feel like I am not enjoying it and wasting my time, it's way too tedious and repetitive.I still liked playing it as I get obsessed about getting all the monsters.6/10 game is alright

Really expected to like this, I have been searching for new titles akin to the classic Pokemon games...this is not it. For starters there a numerous technical issues, from excessive loading times to poor frame rates and graphical glitches. Why can the Nintendo DS from 20 years ago provide a smoother experience!?! Additionally, the art style is uninspired and lacks stylization. I also found some of the music choices baffling, the soundtrack for the first town was so bad I had to turn the volume off to avoid headache. Nevertheless, I still find some enjoyment in the concept and basic gameplay, however there are far better Pokemon clones available... skip this one.
