Sonic x Shadow Generations6
Oct 27, 2024
Shadow Generations is pretty great, however they actually messed up Sonic Generations a bit. It's buggier than the original, the load times even on an SSD are really bad, and a lot of the dialogue changes are just worse than the original. Shadow Generations should have been standalone and cost like $25, but bundling it with a worse version of Sonic Generations and making it $50 is a ripoff if you already own Sonic Generations, and only an okay deal if you've never played it. If I could have bought Shadow Generations on its own for around the price I mentioned above, it would be a 9/10.

MSQ is essentially split into two parts, and while the first part is important for setting up the second, it does drag in some parts. However, the second half is 14 at it's finest. The new dungeons and trials are all pretty great too, and as usual, Soken nailed the music.

Elden Ring2
Apr 9, 2024
The Dark Souls series are games that are built around a slow-ish and strategic gameplay style. They have tight level design whose purpose is to use and test the players abilities with a series of well-curated levels ending in bosses. Elden Ring is a giant, dull open world where you faff about for an hour and maybe find a boss but maybe you're just accomplishing nothing.

Jul 20, 2023
BotW version 1.1 It gets 1 point less due to it being the same game released again, and another point off for killing the Zelda series. Zelda is no longer its own entity: it is a generic open world gathery-crafty with a Legend of Zelda skin slapped on. Update: I finished the game, and have no desire to change the number. Still overrated mediocrity.

This fixed my primary criticism of P3 FES: awful party member AI. It is unfortunate that it also basically turned all non-anime cutscenes into dating sim style cutscenes, but honestly I can deal with that. I'm also not really that concerned about removing the walking around the city parts.

This is an amazing game, but it falls short when compared to its predecessor. It takes the same formula and expands on it, but not all of them are improvements. The game is just a little too big and you waste a lot of time simply traversing the world and levels.

It's pretty decent. The gym questline is your typical pokemon affair, but the other two main quests and the finale quest are decently interesting. It's a shame the pokedex only has 400 mons, but gotta sell that DLC I guess. Now onto the technical aspects. It has framerate issues, but I've rarely encountered any massive glithces that everyone else seems to go on and on about. I firmly believe they are overexaggerating them to get clicks and views. The game is not broken, but it is rough.

It's fine. It misses out on a lot of the charm the earlier games in the series had. The fun of Animal Crossing is firing it up and finding out what's happening today, while in this one, nothing happens unless you make it happen.

Jan 26, 2022
I hadn't played this game in over 15 years so figured I'd give it a go. I recall not liking it as much as other Zelda games, but figured **** I now remember why I've never replayed it. It's a mess. The sword's animation and hitbox are rarely on the same page, and are also inconsistently off. The same exact attack timing, distance, and enemy location and animation status will sometimes result in a hit but also sometimes not. It makes the game extremely frustrating to play when you're taking hits you shouldn't be taking, especially when hearts are so rare and enemies often do 2-3 hearts of damage. Every other 2D zelda plays much better. Even when playing the NES ones, if you get hit, it'll feel like you deserved it. Positives: Graphics, world and dungeon design and themes, and music is pretty good, though only having one dungeon theme hurts it

It's pretty solid. The combat is fun, the story and characters are interesting, and I like the setting and concept. Started feeling kinds grindy near the end, but that just might be my doing. It's disappointing that they used a guest system for multiplayer instead of allowing you to join your friends' actual caravans. If you do actually want to play through with your friends, you need to do 3*n dungeons to complete a year instead of just 3. That aside, it's still a pretty solid game. If you happen to not actually have friends who want to play this game, the multiplayer works fine. You still don't get myrrh as a guest but you do get to pick an artifact still. Hopping in as a guest every now and then can speed up the process of grinding artifacts.

Well if nothing else, at least From recognized it was time to kill the series after this one. Very few original ideas and instead basically a copy paste of DS1 with some details reworded. The only viable builds are low equip load fast roll, just like **** Then to drive the point home, the entire level design theme is to throw a bunch of enemies at you at once. That plus building defense being bad ruins this game.

First off, I just want to say, as a fan of JRPGs, the built-in speedhack of the Steam version is nearly essential. This game is old-skool as **** and it helps with grinding. That said, it's a wonderful game with fantastic characters and story. Play it.

This is a pretty fun game. It's Dark Souls, but with actual characters and an interesting tweak on the battle system. Unfortunately, the Cathedral of Sacred Blood and the final boss exist. Those plus the average level design are what make this game a 5 instead of an 8. I will not replay it.

Persona 4 Golden8
Jul 16, 2020
Freeing this game from the black hole of Vita exclusiveness and allowing the remaining 99% of gamers try it was the best thing Atlus could do. For the record, the first Persona game I played was 5, and the second was 4 on PS2. This context is relevant. P4G fixes almost every issue I had with P4, and every issue stems from being compared to P5. They fixed the awful shuffle time minigame and made it possible to actually start battles with an advantage. It also fixed the weirdness where shadows would get an advantage despite you clearly whacking them. There's also a handful of QoL improvements that got carried to P5, such as seeing how many chapters are in a book and being able to choose inherited skills when doing a fusion. Now for the negative comparisons. These are all subjective. I don't think the story is as good as P5's, though it's not bad by any means. I also think the cast overall is weaker. For every good character like Kanji, Ryotaro, Adachi, and the Strength duo, you get a Yosuke, Yukiko, Tower, Sun duo, etc. The art style is also far inferior. The soundtrack is also not as good, but like the story, is still good. The biggest complaint I have about P4/P4G is the randomly generated dungeons. They completely lack the charm of P5/P5R's static dungeons.

I tried playing the original version on Wii for the first time in 2017 or so, and the graphics were so muddy and the menus were so awful I couldn't get into it. I was excited to try an updated version, and my expectations were met. Persona 5 Royal9
May 19, 2020
Persona 5 was already a 9/10 fantastic game, and this version improves it. A couple interesting new characters, a new final dungeon, some gameplay tweaks, and a bunch of QoL improvements bring it to the next level. If you haven't played the original and are interested in trying it, get this version. I gave it a 9, though, since I don't believe there is enough new stuff to justify this game being $60 when the original is now $20. $40 or maybe $50 would be a better deal.

Preface by saying I never played the PS2 version Once you get over the interesting license, gear, and combat system, this game **** drags. This game is not very good. The story is not interesting at all, and apparently you need to play through it 3 times to get to the good part. I forced myself to finish ending A and it took 10 hours, and then I gave up, and I was not going to do that 2 more times. If it was fun to play, it wouldn't matter as much, but it is a snorefest button masher. Points for the music, interesting locations, and interesting concept, even if it wasn't put to good use.

A fantastic remake of a fantastic game. It plays just like the original, with some QoL improvements such as dedicated buttons for the sword, shield, bracelet, and boots. My only complaints are being unable to use the D-pad for movement (or really anything, it has no functions mapped to it), long load times, and occasional overworld slowdowns.

Best FF14 expansion yet. The new locations, music, characters, and story are all fantastic. I think the story itself could contend with some of the all time JRPG story greats were it a standalone game (with the necessary backstory to fully appreciate it, of course). Dropped it down to a 9 because I'm not into some of the job changes, and I'm not a fan of them dropping the job-specific questlines. Also, really not interested in the announced Nier raid.

A solid core surrounded by questionable decisions. The energy meter was a poor decision. The level design choices of having huge levels with tons of collectibles makes the game drag on. Some of the puzzles are annoying (looking at you ice castle maze). Controls are loose at times. As a longtime fan of Banjo-Kazooie, I'm slightly disappointed in this game, and hopeful for a sequel because with some improvements, we could have another fantastic BK style game.

Good: - Delves into more of the backstory and characters of XC2 - Interesting to wander around Torna - Tweaked the battle system to feel fresh without reinventing the wheel Bad: - Forced sidequesting to advance the main story (the Community) - Pouch items and some non essential upgrades now locked behind a crafting system, which makes money worthless and requires you to go grind gathering spots - Only one new titan Worth playing if you liked XC2. If not, there's nothing here for you.

The difficulty curve is stupid (starts out too high and then decreases) and the marriage system is dumb when the kids just join the parents due to time travel BS, but otherwise it's pretty good. The story is fine, the graphics are good, and there is a **** of stuff to do even without buying any DLC. I like the addition of a customized character so you can always have a class you like if you're not a fan of the characters you get that start as that class. GotY 2017. Great gameplay, great combat, great music, great environments, great story, and great characters. The controls are janky and the momentum is **** Classic Sonic feels tacked on, and the Modern Sonic stages are more mindless than before. And yet it still has some charm. The story is cheesy and over the top like all the good Sonic stories, and Infinite is amusing when he's trying to out edgelord Shadow. Also like nearly every Sonic game, the music and graphics are great. If you're like me who was able to find enjoyment in mediocre Sonic games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Unleashed, this isn't a bad game.

After a few months, I can say it's pretty decent. The story is a significant step down from Heavensward's but it's at least on par with A Realm Reborn's. The changes to every job I've levelled to 70 have been at worst meh to me (I'm not a fan of Bard anymore, but it's fine) to great (Ninja is far less of a **** to play). Most of the new music tracks are amazing. Unfortunately, the zones continued the downward spiral started in HW. Most of them are huge with very little interesting things happening. I blame flying. Also swimming was woefully underused. ARR still has the most interesting and unique zones. I was also not a fan of how parts of some zones were completely walled off by the story. Having high level areas be filled with high level aggressive monsters ala ARR is a much better way to go about it. Worth buying if you're already an active player. I wouldn't say it's good enough to change your mind if you didn't like it already. There's a lot of people **** about the price change. They are dumbasses. The only change was that Brazilian and Russian players on the Steam version are now paying the same monthly fee as Brazilian and Russian players who played the not-Steam version, which is also now on par with what the rest of the world is paying.

Werehog is bad and drags the score down to 6. Now that that's out of the way, the daytime stages are fantastic and the pinnacle of 3D Sonic gameplay. They are worth suffering through the werehog segments to play. I prefer the way this game plays to Sonic Generations. Sonic feels more loose and harder to control, which actually works with the high speed he goes at. Getting good enough at the game to be able to go full speed through the levels is extremely satisfying. The graphics are amazing and the music is fantastic.

A significant step back for the series from Oblivion, but still fun enough for a couple playthrough. The graphics are good and the new combat is fantastic, but the removal of RPG elements and skills removes a lot of the fun from character building. Also after a while, the game tends to feel like you're doing the same exact dungeon over again. Also this game requires too many mods to become playable.

Persona 58
May 22, 2017
I bought this game on a whim from a friend's suggestion after having never played any Persona before. A week and a half later I had beaten the game and had a 75 hour save file. I could not tear myself away from it whenever I wasn't at work. The RPG elements are simple, and yet require strategy. The Persona capturing and fusion system is loads of fun. The story is gripping and the real-world components where you raise your social stats and relationships is fun, though it's slow at times. One small reason this isn't a 10 is because the final couple palaces jump up too far in levels. If you play through the whole game normally, fighting all the enemies you see and clearing Mementos, you will still be underlevelled for them. A large reason why this isn't a 10 is because the final boss and story comes out of nowhere. I was extremely annoyed by how it seemed like the devs realized they needed to finish the game and pulled out the final boss out of nowhere. I would have given the game a 9.5/10, rounded up to 10, if the final palace segment was not there.

Metroid: Other M2

This game is a trainwreck. More linear than 1-1 from Super Mario Bros, bad controls (you need to go into first-person mode to use missiles, which means you can't move, and of course this is required during some boss battles), and they completely ruined Samus as a character. The last point needs an entire paragraph. Samus has a tragic backstory. Ridley ruined her whole life in a traumatic event. But by the time she faces him in this game, she has already beaten him twice. The whole panic attack scene should not have happened. In fact, she should be 100% stoic and unflappable at this point, because chronologically, there's been about 6 games where she was. Seeing her backstory where she wasn't a badass would have been fine if her current self were portrayed more accurately. Basically the only thing this game has going for it are the neat action scenes and the cool environments.
