Hmmm, this is a tough one to review for me. Played all the Soulsbornes (including DeS) through NG+++ and through Way of the Demon on Nioh. I guess I would consider this one a natural progression of the formula for a stealth version of From's stuff with a different twist on the combat. That combat, along with said stealth and quick vertical world traversal was quite enjoyable and a nice change of pace. Overall I really enjoyed the game, but not quite as much as the others. It took me quite a while to complete, but kinda for the wrong reasons. Having to fight some bosses over and over and over (and over) again in order to progress at some points became more tiring than rewarding for some of the fights. I certainly don't want easy mode, but this particular game of From's seems to be much more trial and error than adapting mid-fight and overcoming. With deflecting, dodging, blocking, attacking, and jumping there is just too much to negotiate with some of these bosses until you memorize the patterns. Then you need to execute it near flawlessly to achieve victory. Now do that 3 or 4 times per boss with more movesets, higher aggression, lightning, poison, projectiles, fear, and/or fire tacked on each time. It can be very rewarding, but it can be very tedious and almost unfun. A bit of both, I guess. The system works well, it just feels like too much system sometimes. And that is AFTER it all clicks. The size of the game area-wise is not that big, and areas are repeated with different enemies after triggering certain events. This was not a big issue, but a few more areas would've been nice. The one thing I missed most was the risk/reward of pushing on at the expense of souls to get further. The "bonfires" are pretty close here and you just straight-up lose half experience upon death. It works, but the stakes just aren't as high in that department. Story was fine, but I do prefer the cryptic style of Souls. Overall I loved it and appreciate From doing something a bit different.

After playing a game, I like to let it simmer for a bit before I assemble my overall impressions. What do I remember the most? Do positives or negatives stand out more? Etc. It seems to me, based on my recollections, that the fantastic feeling of just being Spidey carries this game. Not much else does. The story isn't bad or anything, but the campaign just wasn't much fun. My main memories of it are boring stealth missions as MJ or some other kid. Yawn. The bulk of the playtime and highly repetetive fun is housed in the numerous "sidequests", which just have you web around town doing the same things over and over. There are also about 700 bad guy nests to clear. This game was designed on the philosophy of doubling down on Ubisoft's Far Cry model. While being Spidey is great, nothing else is. .

Metroidvania, meet Soulsborne. Pork. **** out a baby that inherits the standout qualities of each, but doesn't necessarily want to take over the family business. The 2d platforming and the opening of new areas you have passed by before via newfound items come from Ma, while the risk/reward system of pushing on vs. having to retrieve xp on a dead corpse or lose forever combined with story/quest obtuseness and a darker asthetic come from Pa. I do like that there are no stats to level. It is all just equipment based, which can be upgraded and fiddled with. If you get stuck, you can go elsewhere for a while to get different fixin's, but eventually you will just have to git gud for the most part. Enemies and bosses have no life bars, which adds a layer of intensity I personally enjoyed. There is also a mapping system that makes you earn it instead of handing it to you, which also adds to the intensity. It does start and build slowly, but is a long game. Took me 60 hours, but minimum for a newbie is probably 40+ hours, depending on how much you want to complete. Very well done and fun game.

Far Cry 57

It's another Far Cry game. I like them for what they are- a ridiculous open world shooter where you just keep doing shooting things in certain areas of the world to collect things to bring back to other places in the world (or for no reason whatsoever). I enjoyed the npc quips and story more in this one than the others, but if you are playing for story in this game (or any Far Cry game in the last decade) you are doing it wrong. I give it a solid 7, which is the equivalant of a 9.5 using a Far Cry rating conversion chart.

This review score is based on the creepy, very fun, underwater crafting/survival adventure game I just could not put down and not the soul-crushing, game-breaking bug-filled mess that warrants a review score of 1. No game has pissed me off more. I absolutely loved it, but paying money for it (which would normally be a great deal) in the state it is in makes me feel like my nuts are nothing but a kicking bag.

I am f*cking done with these **** games. DONE! I blame myself for listening to someone who knows my tastes in games and my disdain for the previous 3 of these pieces of ****. "You'll like this one this time", he said. My own brother who knows me better than almost anybody. One of us apparently was adopted. Story was okay, graphics are outstanding, but the gunplay and puzzles were mediocre at best. It would be a 7 overall if that was the end of it, but it isn't... Half of the f*cking game is mind-numbling, sleep-inducing climbing. My God, sir. Even the reviewers must be feeling this by now, too, as it didn't win game of the year by most standards. Holy balls, this game is like 10-15 long, but I am not exaggerating when I tell you it felt like 40-60. DONE with this garbage.

Pretty Godd*mn swell if you axe me... Being a big Soulsborne junky I was keeping an eye on this forever, ya know, being it is a clone and all. Yeah, it is a clone for the most part. That said, it is its own man for the most part when it comes to combat, crafting and loot. Coming right off of playing a Dark Souls game into this was quite a learning curve, as there is a lot more **** going on here under the hood. I almost quit because I just couldn't adjust to the controls. Well, after resetting my brain with a break, I came back and plowed through it about 2 weeks. The level layouts, bonfires (shrines), and boss fights are all very Soulsy. Even the glowing treasure orbs are the same. The graphics, story, and ambiance are slightly inferior, but the combat, crafting and NG+ options are where it makes you deer it in the headlights. If put in a headlock or full nelson, I'll still take my Souls, but this is right behind it. God bless. Pay your taxes.

It's too bad this game just doesn't have the polish it sorely needs, because the foundation it's built upon is very good. If you are reading these, you know what type of game this is and it is most likely what you are looking for. I will not go into that part of it. I'd just like you to know what baggage it will be carrying with it. While ultimately a fun tactical roleplaying game, the learning curve and general clunkiness make it unnecessarily difficult. It took memany hours ro figure out basic gameplay stuff that would've been handy to know from the beginning. Trying to use the skill wheel on the appropriate item/person with the appropriate person took a while to get down, for example. The random world battles, while generally fun, never seemed to let me use the whole map. They would always start in the same exact places on the map and would never allow for very much set-up or movement before triggering battle. This game is also fairly buggy and crashed on me many times, always while trying to save. A few of them after lengthy, difficult ones. The good news is, this game has many meaningful options and decisions for quests and character building is very important. Make sure you save often. If the problems and hassles of this game were fixed and it got a nice polishing, I would not hesitate to give this a 9. Unfortunately, despite the love I do have for it I cannot give it more than a 6 in its current condition.

I just read a review someone wrote about this. Apparently he/she believes this would be an accurate portayalof how the world would be 1960 if the **** had won WWDuece. Ha. I admit it certainly would probably be a bit different, but I don't see a lot of giant mechs and robot dogs patrolling streets anywhere in the world even in 2015. The game itself was moderately enjoyable. Pretty standard stuff, really. I do like the cover system. The story was well acted and there was actually a few times it actually twanged the ol' heart strings, bieve it or not. Solid stealth and gunplay, but nothing you haven't played before. Worth the trip, though.

I don't know, man. I'm kinda torn on this one. A lot of improvements with the world and graphics, yet something has been stripped away that I can't put my finger on. It's too... streamlined. Too much like every other open world type of game now. The only thing setting it apart is the 4 party combat, and even that has really simplified. It's still a fun game, but it has lost some of the magic Origins started it off with. Certainly better than 2, though.

Not sure why Techland gets **** on by "pro" reviewers more than other developers. Every COD and Battlefield gets a minimum score of 8, year after repetetive year no matter how little change in the game or how little people can play online due to bugs, server issues, etc. But oh no, make a fun zombie/parkour game and they'll tear it the f*ck up like a biter rippin' through a 6 year old blind kid. I don't know why, really. Yeah the story is meh. I agree the zombies may not be wearing thin for some. But you know what? It's committed no faults that any other higher rated game haven't committed. It's actually probably one of two games that worked out of the box in the last 2 years. It's a fun, tense, open world zombie freerunning rpg. Enjoy it, even if it is Techland, the red headed stepchildof game developers.

Even reading extensive unflattering critic and user reviews didn't stop me from putting down some cold, hard cash for this. It was a bargain-bin amount, but it still ended up being more than I wish I had thrown down. I could only muster enough courage to make it about halfway through the game. At it's finest it was a action rpg just swell enough to keep the boredom at bay. It has a decent leveling and crafting system, but the rarely barely enjoyable combat drug it down and the horrendous writing and voice acting was pure ****. I got to the point where I hastily button-pumped my way through any conversation. The graphics were 2012 PS3 most of the way, occasionally hitting 2014 PS3 quality. What ultimately made me put it down for good, though, was that it seemed to have graduated with honors from the Dragon Age 2 School of Using the Same Goddamn Tiny, Cramped Location for Every F*cking Mission. Sorry, but a small team of developers with heart behind the project and my craving for anythng resembling Demon's/Dark Souls just ain't enough for a recommendation.

Being a fan of the horror genre I was pretty excited to jump into this game. It started off on all the right foots (feet?) with the decent graphics, the foreboding atmosphere when you wheel up to the asylum, tight enough and intuitive controls, etc. All of that is retained throughout the game I am happy to say, along with some camera battery management which is effectively your only "weapon" for survival, but a few other things drag it down from what may have been a 9 score. First off, the guy you play never seems to really be scared. In fact, the pedal is put to the metal with his cheesy **** talk. You see, as he progresses he writes stuff in his journal (he's doing some investigative reporting) detailing the things he's come across, most of which would scared the f*cking Bejesus out of just about any living human being on the planet not in some kind of vegetative state or perhaps blind, deaf and hard of smell. He's chased by large, beastly dudes, buff naked twins, a torture doctor taken straight out of a Rob Zombie film and even some supernatural **** That doctor dude even cuts a few of his fingers off. All pretty good stuff game-wise. However, this cat just trudges through it all like it's not too big a deal, writing smart-ass remarks in his notebook. He may as well be writing about a NFL playoff game or the morning traffic, because you wouldn't know by the tone of it. It really took me out of the moment every single time I read an entry. The documents you find thankfully aren't bad and give you clues to the story. Other than that, the only real gripes I have are that after you figure out the flow of the game you can just kinda trial and error your way through just running and not hiding as all the scenarios are almost exactly the same set-up. Get to an area, sneak around to turn on valves and escape to the next section with someone chasing you. The game length is fairly short, which is good, because that **** repetition starts creeping in as you progress. Overall, I was legitimately creeped out many times and felt a high amount of tension throughout most of the game. I can't guarantee you'll like it or be scared obviously, but for like $3 or whatever it is you'd be some kind of a jack-ass not to give 'er a spin.

This one took me a little bit to get into, but once I did it had me hooked pretty good. I really enjoyed the battle system. Many ways to combine powers and beat the bad guys up. I wish there were a few more enemy types, but I can live with what they gave me. Like Bastion, it has a NG+ so you can go through all beefed up and seriously tear some **** up. Your sword talking all the f*cking time got on my nerves, though. Even my kids were getting p*ssed. They are 10 and 7 year olds who annoy people by their nature, so that is saying something. Good game, though.

Being a dress casual type of RPG player, I had to give this guy a shot. The 2D side-scrolling was a welcome change of pace, but it got a little stale midway through the game. If they choose to do a sequel, I think I might prefer a little more of a platforming element. The physical tools needed to navigate the realm were just too basic and... kind of boring. It just needed more outside of its great combat system. The combat is a turn-based/timing hybrid and it works well. The skills of your squad and the strategy involved to achieve victory can be mixed and matched to suit your style or the situation. The crafting was welcome, but it would've been nice to have an easy way to see how to craft gems from recipes you discovered. It was a pain in the *ss trying to remember what had to combine with what to get what. The art style was pretty swell and the story was about some redheaded broad becoming a woman and defeating an evil brunette and/or blonde who may have been related to her or not or something. I don't know, I don't really play for story unless it's pretty compelling. Overall I'd recommend.

The production values, story, characters, and the ability to get an accurate pulse on pop culture have always been what the GTAs have had going for them, yet I could never get into them due to terrible and boring mission structure and sub par gameplay. When this one came out with a new first person mode combined with a more forgiving checkpoint system I thought it might finally be time to hop on board. Well, for a while it was enough. It had never been better. Sadly though, the one-two punch of boring-as-f*ck and touchy missions and a lack of anything to do other than those boring missions (unless you want to play a **** tennis game or something) eventually brought my time with it to an end. Even with the improvements, the biggest glaring issue is even more glaring- it's just not fun at all to play

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag7
Feb 10, 2015
I have never been all that much of a fan of the Assassin's Creed games. I made it halfway through number 2 and quit out of fatigue and never made it back. This is my first attempt since then to give the franchise another shot. Not because I miss the stupid animus **** the painfully awkward parkour system, the endlessly boring and ridiculously finicky eavesdropping/tailing/sneaking missions that 95% of the main campaign consists of, but for the pirating stuff. The sailing around and exploring are what make this game fun. Any one of the numerous side missions are much more enjoyable than any of the main ones. Someone else said it in their review, but it is a damn shame a good pirate game had to be stapled to a **** Assassin's Creed game. It probably would have been a 9.5 otherwise.

I am not what you'd call an avid fighting game fan. It isn't for a lack of trying them, I just haven't found one that I could get into- other than the God of War series. It's either the cameras ****, the characters are extremely lame, or the move sets are more complicated than I am willing to learn. More often than not it's at least 2 of the 3. About 3 hours into it at the moment. I played the first one for the same amount of time before putting the brakes on. I really, really want to love this game, but I can only call it average. I enjoy the mystery style of it and the rescuing of people, exploring the open world at your own pace and what-not, but my God are the controls and graphics still awfully, painfully ****. It's sooo close to being a game I could put about 1,000 hours into, but alas, my time with it will probably end at 5 hours. A plus for adding a sandbox mode. A minus for Frank's forehead taking up 3/4 of the screen.

This was one of the games I wanted to play the most when I got my PS3 as a late adapter. Demon's Souls was the other. I enjoyed both, but for different reasons. This one had me **** into the story from the get-go. As a dad, it really tugged at me. As a gamer, it was a different kind of game than I am used to, but I appreciated the cinematic approach to the controls and presentation. It had a little too much unnecessary fluff added in, but at the end of the day it had me hooked until it was over. I may have to go back to see if it holds up storywise now that I know what happens and to get some different endings.

I f*cking loved this game when it came out. I enjoyed the VATS and the perks and what-not. Honestly, overall I enjoyed New Vegas a little more with the tweaks that were made, but this is the one that had the most initial impact on me. The subway tunnels get a little monotonous and confusing to traverse after a bit, but that is about the only legitimate gripe I have about Skyrim With Guns. Besthesda also knows the right way to do DLC, as they were pretty good and helped (along with Oblivion) to set a trend releasing beefy add-ons. Looking forward to 4.

I bought this after the patch came out that fixed the save issues for the PS3 version. I will only shave 1 point off the final score for that. It would probably have been more, but I had no issues other than having to wait forever to play it. The game itself is as good as it has always been. It doesn't really add much to what was already done in Oblivion. A few minor tweaks here and there, but that is about it. The complaints I have- Killing dragons by hitting them in the leg because they were dumb enough to land was pretty ill-conceived, Every NPC in the local taverns are all voice-acted by the same dude or broad, and none of the other minor annoyances too numerous to mention haven't really been addressed. Essentially it's an Oblivion HD remake or something along those lines.

Aug 22, 2014
Man, this game was pretty disappointing. The overall gunplay was better than the original, but pretty much everything else that made the first one interesting was gone, like hacking and stuff, for instance. It has the familiar Bioshock vibe, but the creepiness is gone. The atmosphere gets old awfully quick and the main character talking is a massive drawback, not to mention toting around a girl (like every other game released in 2013) that I never really cared about. The story was okay, but it lacked the punch that the original had. Of the 3 Bioshocks, this is easily the weakest. An average game at best.

Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster6
Aug 21, 2014
This is based on only playing about 5 hours of X. I have not delved into X-2. I'll give it a benefit of the doubt on some stuff, like being ancient in terms of gamer time, but I doubt I will reach hour 6. Maybe it was more revolutionary back when it came out (I didn't play it then), but this has got to be one of the most ridiculously cut-scened game I have ever "played". About 12 minutes of the game has been actual gameplay so far. It wouldn't be so bad if I could skip the cut-scenes or if they weren't so f*cking stupid. I get that there are messages to be had and emotions to be felt, but this is about the least interesting and/or non-abrasive way in which I could receive those messages and emotions. I went in looking for a decent turn-based RPG (which seemed to be shaping up battlewise rather well in the miniscule amount of battle time there was) and ended with a 138 minute tutorial of blitzball I had no desire to learn. I would've stuck with it had they allowed me to skip the ****, but instead decided to put the final nail in the coffin that sealed away any remaining interest I had in the Final Fantasy worlds. I played and liked 1 and 7 (many years ago), but 13 and now this? No thanks.

It's kinda got a little Dark Souls to it in it's high volume of death and risk/reward/leveling set-up. Overall a good game, but not as good as the time you will sink into it warrants. Like I said, it's a bit cracky. I like these indie games, but for the love of Christ, would it kill these people to make better graphics? This is the by far the best Uncharted game yet. My only real gripe is there is not enough tombs/puzzles. I feared it would end up being a **** interactive movie like the first 3 Uncharted games, but ended up besting all of them in almost every department. Okay, you got me- I never played the first one. After playing the 2nd and 3rd I know I never will. Yes, I do know this really isn't an Uncharted game. Thank Christ for that.

Takes a little of each from the first 2 entries (yes, 2) and puts them together to form another gem. It's essentially just more of the same with more **** to do. It is certainly more accessible, but not from a difficulty standpoint. Weapon crafting, side quests, bonfire hopping are all made "easier" to accommodate all the **** that didn't buy the first ones because they only got a 8.9 on Metacritic instead of a 9.1. Now go back and start at Demon's Souls if this is your first stop into the trilogy.

I guess I just don't get it, no matter which way you cut it. As a game I rate it a 2, as there is zero challenge or fun involved in any way shape or form. As a story or "experience", I give it a 5. I can see that maybe it's trying say something deep and meaningful, but honestly, I wish I would've known how little I would have given a **** what it is or may be before trudging through this pointless "game". What a waste of time. The "pro" reviewers I expected great reviews from, but you user reviewers really let me down on this one. You owe me $15.

There are 423 bosses in this game, and apparently they are all worth silver trophies. Some are incredibly easy and some are incredibly frustrating. Overall a fun but forgettable experience.

Pretty fun, but it's still no Diddy Kong Racing. Having an answer for the blue shell is welcome and the HD graphics are an improvement, but at the end of the day it's essentially the same thing it's always been.

Yeah, I thought the graphics **** and that they would be a big hurdle for me to get over and maybe the PS3 edition doesn't have all the bells and whistles some of the other additions do, but good Lord, this game scratches an itch I never knew I was this bad until I played it. The best $15 a gamer could ever spend.

Superb atmosphere. Creepier than any Resident Evil put out in the last decade, but so is Sim City and Nintendogs I guess. At any rate, I give this trial and error platforming puzzler a couple of thumbs up.

Despite the awful graphics, weird "open world" and a character on par with Jar Jar Binks, this RPG is still one of my favorites. Man, I STILL want to c*ckpunch Allister...

By far the best in the trilogy. I got bored driving that dune buggy across empty space in number 1 and 3 I just felt was number 2 only less interesting. Rip the series for not ending the way you wanted, you crying, whiny little spoiled, sniveling c*nts, but this game is still one of my top 10 of all time, even with the downgraded RPG customizations.

Dammit... inadvertently reviewed Mass Effect 2 for this one instead. Man, am I an idiot. Score still stands, tho. It's a 9. Wish that this one was the bigger entry of the 2. I really dug it.

Fun TBS game, but honestly it's pretty overrated. Sacred Stones was the only other one I played in the series. Permadeath seemed to carry much more wight in that one, as you couldn't farm for helpers at your leisure. At the end of the day though, most of the additions were welcome. As far as story goes, who gives a f*ck. It's a lame RPG story I'm guessing. I don't play strategy games for story.
