If you look up the word addiction in a dictionary, you will find out what that word means. But the dictionary might just as well display a picture of Rogue Legacy. [Dec 2013]
Amazing old-school mechanics meet modern conventions.
Roguelike games have become increasingly popular of late and it’s great to see one which rewards you for all the time spent by allowing a form of character progression. It’s mitigated to a point by having you lose all your money before entering a castle and each purchased bonus makes all the others more expensive.

Rogue Legacy is simply too engaging and fun to be missed. The brilliant adaptation of the unforgiving roguelike formula makes it accessible to a wider audience too.

In my opinion this game has perfected the difficulty and length of a roguelite. It took me 15-20 hours (idk how much exactly, because switch stats doesn't show exact numbers) to complete the game 3 times. I love that the map is not very big - because of that a single run doesn't take that much time. I like the graphics and the music - it's not a beautiful game, but still it has its own character (unlike Rogue Legacy 2)

Despite the occasional control annoyance and underdeveloped trait system, this is a fantastic game that I am going to spend many more hours with to continue building my legacy.

Dying, again and again, every time in an unknown world. Roguelikes are tough, but Rogue Legacy makes the journeys slightly lighter with rpg elements that make progress attainable every single run. Rogue Legacy also gets a lot of personality and humor from the addition of character specific traits, like a handicap or disability. Rogue Legacy is tough, hard and unforgiving, but still very accessible thanks to these additions. Just what this genre needed.

Rogue Legacy succeeds in both being a difficult title and a compelling role playing game. Quick, deep, satisfying: that's how all roguelikes should be alike.

Rogue Legacy doesn’t come close to replacing Metroid or Castlevania in my heart, but it isn’t supposed to. It’s a fun popcorn game, fine for killing 15 minutes here and there or eating an afternoon with a series of runs if you’re in the mood. Don’t expect any story or epic adventure so much as a neat little action game with a compelling upgrade system, and you’ll find plenty to love here.

I just couldn’t get away from this simple platformer – it gave me a clinical just-one-more-attempt syndrome. [CD-Action 09/2013, p.69]

Simple game, super addictive! Rogue Legacy is a rogue like adventure where you command a knight and enter a randomly generated castle-dungeon to get gold to buy more equipment, classes and abilities. Whenever you die, you can choose between 3 of the past hero sons to take on the fight, each son will have perks, some positive like super-strength, and some negative like myopia( everything far is blurred) making the choice of the class just as important as the perks his has. And that's it!!! There are four areas inside the castle with increasing difficulties each on having a boss, after you kill all of them, you go against the final boss. What makes you play again, again, again, again is the randomness of the game. Every time you play feels fresh and new. The game also posses New Game Plus and New Game Plus Plus.. for more difficulty if the player is interested.

Hmmm... how to describe it to you... I understand why so many players love this game SO much. I myself enjoyed it somehow and I’ll give it a “recommend” rating, but with a certain "but", and another question is whether I’ll buy the second part. I'm a fan of platformers, pixels, interesting mechanics (and this idea with inheritance is just so cool), difficult/interesting boss fights and treasures. It's all here. But there are also some crappy mechanics here too. Partly of the World itself, partly of the combat system. Just look at the arrows/fireballs of the shooters, which are sometimes stopped by a wall, sometimes not. Or a turn-kick-back. And, the worst thing is a sloooooooo progress. If only there was a good story and atmosphere(there is a general story here, but this was not enough for me personally to outweigh my dissatisfaction with the gameplay), or at least not such a slow development I'd give it 8. But overall, 7 out of 10.

Not a big fan of rogue-like games but... Pros.: - Family manor and many upgrades. - Gameplay is quite simple. Easy to navigate. - Map and its design. Cons.: - Some bosses are quite annoying even with good lvl. - High lvl of adjustment. You kind of need to like this type of games to play it. Otherwise, it gets boring too fast.

This is one of those games that will appeal to a select minority. A veritable grind-fest, the game is super difficult in a very, very bad way. Instead of ramping up difficulty using clever level design and interesting enemies the devs decided that more enemies (boring enemies) is the only way to go. Everything has pretty much been said by other reviewers, so I will just quickly reiterate some of the key issues: difficulty through bad design, useless traits that are just gimmicks that become tedious after just one play, insanely grindy to the point of being savagely boring unless you are a grind fan, random level design promising endless hours of fun is indeed random, but the original boring design makes randomness also boring, floatiness and response times make keyboard useless and some controllers needlessly hard to use (my Rumblepad 2 for example, good for pretty much any other game) and there is more but I am getting bored, just like with the game after 5 hours of playing. Good music, nice graphics, some clever ideas, but overall only for grind fans.

I find that indie games receive a lot of praise and leniency, just for being an indie game that tried something uncommon. Games like FTL and Terraria, however, prove that we don't have to hold indie games to such low standards. For that reason, I'm going to tell it as it is: Rogue Legacy is mediocre. It consists of an interesting idea for a trait and progression system that is unimpressive in its execution and delivered on top of a terrible platform game. I played enough of it to get a good taste (defeated the bosses etc), and I regret all of it. This is the worst kind of gaming there is: a progression system that compels you to start a new game, but the gameplay is so bad that you hate yourself every time.

SummaryRogue Legacy is a rogue-"lite" game for PC, Mac and Linux. You'll die, but your children will avenge you. They might be genetically deficient, but that's ok. You still love your colour-blind baby. Or do you?
