Mike Flanagan’s work tends to oscillate between genuine hits and overly sentimental, Hallmark-style attempts at horror. His characters often feel less like fully realized individuals and more like exaggerated archetypes, narrowly defined by the ideas they are meant to represent. The narratives frequently drag, burdened by a strained pursuit of thematic depth that never fully materializes. This is compounded by a visual presentation that often feels cheap or **** same issues surface in Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club. The characters come across as awkwardly written, and the stories lack a coherent sense of direction. There’s a persistent sense that many characters exist solely to fulfill the notion that “flawed humans are more relatable,” yet this approach feels contrived rather than authentic. The result is a body of work that often feels emotionally artificial and thematically unfocused.

Like someone decided to make a miniseries about the most annoying, obnoxious, unlikeable and uninteresting people on earth and then set it in the middle of a Poe plot. The dialogue is so far gone that it sounds like an 11th grader wrote it. The sets are pretty but only go so far as to distract from the fact that a bunch of freakishly unlikeable people are walking around uttering things like "Who's ****?" More and more, Netflix shows look like they were scripted by AI programmed by high schoolers. It's just unwatchable.

I really enjoyed the series. I am a big Poe fan and loved to see this take on his work.

This started out intense, exciting, engaging and quickly - within the first 30 minutes - tanked into wokeville. All the woke pandering aside, this series plays out like a bad comedic soap opera. Not a single likeable character, a banal storyline and a vaudevillian musical score. No thanks.

Delicious retelling of Poe motives. Flanagan is the king of adaptation right now, see HILL HOUSE, or DOCTOR SLEEP. So, please, do Lovecraft next <3

Personnally i hated those forced references to Poe, or hommages or whatever. But it's still a Flanagan's joint (or semi ? idk what happened there), so superior to most braindead modern shows. Same pattern as the others, elaborated characters build around some unsettling topics, with the horror slowly creeping in. Then killing them off. But the Poe thingie.. just kicked me out of the show each time. Might be a fun drill for them but it rams the fourth wall constantly for the viewer. Dufuq was the point of that. U can't make new with 200y old

so hard to make it through the first episode. all of the characters are one dimensional and totally unlikeable. looks like this one has really split the audience,most ratings are either 10 or 0

"The Fall of the House of Usher" (solo season, 10/12/23, 8 eps, 1 hr, Netflix) Bruce Greenwood leads an excellent cast portraying Edgar Allen Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" whose 8 episodes are each named for one of Poe's short stories. The level of production, acting, directing is so good that this was a joy to watch night after night. And there are so many prime lines of dialogue that I can't believe the "Quotes" section for this series hasn't even been started yet. The main plot involves madness/insanity but with an external catalyst ala "satan". When watching, be sure to keep an eye on Carla Gugino's "Verna" character since she's the antagonist to the two protags, "Roderick" and "Madeleine" Usher. This whole series should be nominated for Emmy awards, and the top four/five stars of this should be nominated for best leading and best supporting awards, highly recommended, and that's rare from me.

Flanagan makes another boring and unscary soap opera. Don't mistake this for a horror series, because it's not. It's a mishmash of ham-fisted social commentary with Edgar Allan Poe tropes sprinkled in without rhyme or reason. If you like corny overdramatized soap operas, then give it a watch, but if you want horror, this is just awful. Flanagan's one and only trick to create a scare is a quick jump-cut to someone in gore makeup every 20-30 minutes. It's boring. But that's not even the offensive part. This series is ostensibly a collection of Poe's works put into a single linear story, but it's not that. The show feels like someone skimmed a handful of Poe's "Best Of" poems, then decided to add elements of those into an already-written screenplay like square pegs into a round hole. They also have characters randomly quote Poe poems for no real reason other than to try to fool the audience into thinking the writing is better than it actually is. If you want horror, this show is not for you. If you want intelligent social commentary, this show is not for you. If you're a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, this show is REALLY not for you. If you want 8 grueling hours of hate mail to big pharma, then you'll think this is the best show ever.

Truly awful. Some decent performances but with a plot and writing that is so bad it feels like Reddit became sentient and penned the entire thing.

Unusal and original

The Fall of the House of Usher stands as Mike Flanagan’s most accomplished project to date, excelling in every aspect. The director has taken Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale of the Usher mansion and forged it into a modern masterpiece.

Unfunny and in your face. A Succession for those not overburdened with excessive intelligence and/or taste.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher This gothic horror miniseries delves into the titular Usher family. Roderick Usher, the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, is plagued by the successive and gruesome death of his children, as he tries to grapple with the occurrences the deaths tower on. Adapted from various short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Mike Flanagan (director) presents a cohesive story that unfurls with style and tension. Characterization is key to the brilliance of this miniseries, and the cast that embodies these roles does a stellar job. The cinematography and sets are stunning and artistic. Themes of capitalism, greed, opioid epidemic, addiction and reckoning are employed. The Fall of the House of Usher is a must-watch. 9/10

All the Poe references feel forced, and I really couldn't care less about these characters. Feels like your egular American Horror Story season. But, honestly, it gets better during the second half, and the gore is great.

One of the best series I have seen in awhile.

One-dimensional, unlikable and uninteresting characters in a show that wants to be half Succession and predictable, repetitive horror elements filling the other half. No mystery or intrigue, just shallow spectacle without creativity. Everyone is stupid,the story is filled with plot convenience and plot holes that shatter suspension of disbelief. It honestly baffles me how this show is getting such good rep.

This was thoroughly entertaining start to finish. The acting was very good and the story was very engrossing. I wish more Nexflix series were as good as this one was. 10/10!!

Great story, seamlessly combining several Poe stories with amazing performances, great dialogue and some grisly fates for some pretty terrible people.

Horror fails as a vehicle for a moral statement in the absence of a final judgment of the dead, and this substantially undermines Mike Flanagan’s _The Fall of the House of Usher_. In the end, for all the supposedly wicked things the Usher family did, their only penalty for their deal with Death is that they die—exactly what all their victims and everyone else does too. So why not be evil and gain the benefits if there is no accounting, no damnation? And if a supernatural soul is out, what explains the supernatural personification of death? Flanagan makes well-written, visually stunning, superbly acted horror that is ultimately rendered toothless by his godless, materialistic worldview. For a horror auteur, that’s a damned shame.

Didnt like how generic it is andit feels like the have to check boxes in order to do a series. BORING it started good the first 5 minutes. Not recommended.

Not a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe, however none of the references to his work are too "in your face". The production value is brilliant and sets a very spooky atmosphere, a perfect show for Halloween season!

While not my favourite Flanagan series, he's so consistently great that this is well worth a watch. Usher uses Poe as a framework for a story obviously based upon the Sacklers (may they rot in hell) and Oxycontin -- a wealthy pharma empire brought to ruin by their own heedless greed and ambition. While Poe purists might revolt at the looseness of the adaptation, there's a ton here to satisfy the Edgar Allan itch. Usher ties in many elements of Poe's work to generate a mix of loving homage, and original work. Hamill is an awesome addition to Flanagan's recurring ensemble (and how great is it that he continues to bring back favourite collaborators for future products?). At this point, I'll really watch anything Flanagan creates. He's simply one of the best American artists operating in film and TV, and gods bless him for devoting his talents to horror and suspense.

Amateur hour again. This is more of a box ticking exercise than an actual watchable show. I couldn't get past the first episode it's that bad.

I liked it, but I can see how it might not be everyone’s cup of tea nor is it as good as The Haunting of Hill House. it’s a bit of mindless watch, if you like gory horror and rich family drama give it a go!

A perfect and creative combination of Poe´s stories and Saeckler´s crimes, every minute worth watching.

One of the best work of Flanagan so far, much better than most of the other series. The trailer ****, making it look like a goofy horror comedy, while it’s actually quite far from that. I agree that the Poe references are wasted (or rather pointless), but if you get past that and judge the episodes on their own merit, the series really delivers a memorable story with some great acting.

I've been a big fan of a lot of Mike Flanagans previous work (Haunting of hill house was incredible) but this is just awful! i have no problem with adaptations, but this is just straight up disrespectful to the original Poe stories. I actually felt genuinely angry seeing what he's done with such great source material. This is just a classic example of millenial TV aimed at the twitter/tik tok generation...horrible.

Netflix's hability to desecrate the work of literature geniuses is really annoying.. Poe must be rolling on his grave.. complete waste of attention, energy, money and time..

Gorgeous. Decadent. Everything you could possibly want for spooky season at a price you are very willing to pay. Spread this out over three stormy nights with tea and treats like we did for the perfect Hallo-month experience. Flanagan never disappoints and always leaves you laughing AND crying and a little bit unnerved- the bathroom light will be staying on. Also holy **** Carla.

When this miniseries was announced, I genuinely believed that Mike Flanagan would adapt Edgar Allan Poe's tale faithfully. However, when I found out this was not going to be the case, I must admit I was rather skeptical about how it would turn out.Nevertheless, it's gratifying to observe that Mike Flanagan didn't falter, and instead of opting for a faithful adaptation, he boldly crafted his own unique version and vision of the **** his approach, he integrates numerous references to Poe's work, resulting in a mysterious, captivating, suspenseful, and occasionally gruesome narrative that delves into themes such as excess, greed, legacy, hubris, wealth, family, and affairs to be **** is undeniable that the show presents some challenges in terms of narrative pacing, although this issue was foreseeable from the start. The plot itself isn't overwhelmingly complex, but dealing with so many characters, it was to be expected that certain parts of the series would not fit together seamlessly.This issue is mostly accentuated due to the disparity in the depth of the main characters, both in their personalities and their backstories. As a result, some episodes shine more brightly than others.Despite these fluctuations, the show maintains a consistent and remarkable tone of sorrow and impending doom, that is impeccable and a delight. This not only places the show among the best offerings in Netflix's extensive catalog but also establishes it as an excellent adaptation of Poe's work, possessing its own unique identity. The combination of these virtues turns it into an outstanding gothic series, brimming with drama, mystery, suspense, and **** Fall of the House of Usher represents Mike Flanagan's final contribution to Netflix following previous outstanding projects such as Gerald's Game, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club and Midnight **** of those projects with the exception of The Midnight Club are among the best Netflix has to offer, and they're definitely going to be missing him. Now I just pray that Amazon finally decides to adapt The Dark Tower with him at the **** would be pertinent to suggest that you dedicate your weekend to this series, as it really deserves it.

It`s not about Poe at all (while "Hill House" and "Bly Manor" tried to capture the essence of the literary works they adapted). It`s "Succession" with gore. It`s like a more restrained season of "American Horror Story". Not bad (and the framing device about two old men around a fireplace is perfect), but not particulary scary and without the depths of Flanagan`s other work.

One of my favorite stories of all time, Netflix comes in hot with an absolute mockery of Poes work. Yet another example of netflix taking an ideal story and rendering it completely unwatchable with its unwelcome "interpretation" I made it through half of the first episode before turning it off in utter revulsion. This is absolutely unacceptable.

While a satisfying send-up of Edgar Allen Poe pieces, Mike Flanagans’s tribute, “The Fall of the House of Usher” too often feels like a paint by numbers exercise; more focused on applying the correct Poe trope than creating a compelling story. Still, it has its moments and overall is worth the watch.

I don't know what Mike Flanagan was thinking when he composed this garbage idea of a television show. Edgar Allan Poe is truly one of the greatest writers of all time and should be perpetually lauded for his elegant prose, but shoving decontextualized quotes from Poe's works into a completely different (and poorly written) story is disgusting. It's a damn shame considering that Midnight Mass is an excellent homage to Dracula.

Not as Good at "Midnight Mass," but still one of his best works with sharp writing, as always, and Anthology actors that are part of Mike Flanagan's Rogues Gallery. At the start they give away the ending to all the ushers with the older doing his "hail marry" to a man he admires and respects on the other side of the law. If you look at this at face value you'd see a Final Destination, Masque of the Red Death (Vincent Price who also did Usher story, too) story where the main characters have accrued bad karma and a "Vengeful Rot" overlaying the Edgar Allen Poe stories front and center. This modern retelling of usher and one mans struggle to cope with dark forces beyond his control.

Mike Flanagan tries to repeatthe Haunting of Hill House formula and succeeds in making a gripping story, lovable yet flawed characters. I definitely recommend watching The Fall of The House Usher.
