While the episode with McElhenny, Waters and Konkle was funny, the episode that starred Grant was funny and heartwarming.

It’s an enjoyable and ambitious supplement to one of today’s best streaming comedies – but at only four episodes, Side Quest feels too slight, and unable to reach the high bar set by previous Mythic Quest one-offs.

With a mere four, however, it feels more like a series of excursions into the ripples of the video game world that couldn't be fit into a standard season — delicious leftovers, but leftovers nonetheless.

Overall, Side Quest waxes and wanes in quality, carrying some writing flaws while achieving moments of dramatic greatness. But luckily, it ended on a high note with an episode that is a touching tribute to the gaming community.

The distance it puts between itself and its parent proves as much a curse as a blessing. Siloed off into a separate realm, these odds and ends struggle to find much of a way forward on their own.

“Side Quest” is an easy watch, but a forgettable one.
