Ava and Deborah’s easy dynamic returns as the martinis flow. Ava masterfully teases out the dissatisfaction roiling just beneath the surface of Deborah’s success.

The plot could’ve crackled if it was told in half the time. Frustratingly, the mystery isn’t even fully solved by the end of the season—though the answer seems pretty obvious. If The ’Burbs does return, here’s hoping it can pull itself out of the cul-de-sac.

No series has plumbed the heart and soul of middle-aged ladies quite like Riot Women, an ensemble dramedy from Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright. Fierce, funny, and profound.

Mitzi is a cardboard cutout of a backstabbing cheater. Still, these shortcomings aren’t dire enough to dim Palm Royale’s frothy appeal, which is all the more delightful this time because the writers know that the show’s sheer ridiculousness is exactly what makes it sing.

There’s so much material that Death By Lightning can’t decide what to focus on, so it opts for packing as much as possible into its scant four episodes. The result is a meandering saga rife with tonal whiplash.

Though The Lowdown wears its influences on its sleeve—think Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, and pretty much any Coen brothers movie—it never comes off as derivative. That’s because it’s steeped in specificity, from the production design (you may want to pause scenes in the bookstore to read the spines of vintage paperbacks) to the world-building. Every character on the show feels realized, even if we only see them in glimpses.

It plays out like a novel, leaping backward and forward across decades. And just as BoJack did when it premiered in 2014, Long Story Short feels like something entirely new.
