Lazarus doesn’t coast on its credentials, either of Watanabe’s past work or those of the show’s starry collaborators. And in the episodes made available, it feels like there is plenty of room to grow and complicate this story as the bigger picture is still pretty unclear. But luckily, what hasn’t changed from Cowboy Bebop is Watanabe’s sense of style and interest in using animation to depict and empower people who have fallen through the cracks.

Watanabe's latest, “Lazarus,” calls on familiar hints while transporting us to a future near enough to feel like the present, anxieties included. .... What matters is that the whole melds into an undeniable vibe.

Largely brilliant but nothing is perfect. Really if you are going to make Schiphol airport and Rembrant's Nightwatch a hub in your story line hop on a plane and go see the real thing because clearly the makers of this animeare absolutely clueless what that is like. They seem to think Schiphol is a small regional airport instead of a multi-layered city where if you work there you need to call it's internal taxi service several times each shift to get get where you need to be. It's huge and very **** the Nightwatch isn't a picture somewhere in a museum you can just walk up to and be alone with. It's the pride of the nation and they built the museum around it. As far as they concerned this is what you visit the Netherlands for period. These days it's hard to view the full picture without at least a couple of the many tourists standing in your view. It's nitpicking **** my impression that they could have researched the locations they based this on a little better. That being said the animation and style are fresh, slick and beautiful. What especially stands out is the music. Not the same old violin orchestra but a very hip and tasteful sound. Really refreshing. Yeah it isnt Cowboy Bebob but it doesn't need to be. It's a new series original series with its own take. I liked the car design it's only a shame that animating how cars travel and react is something that is not done very well in the world of anime in general. It's all very Donald Ducky. You can say it's a style but I think getting it right deserves some attention.I hope some one makes a point to do it. Nevertheless this is a top quality animated series that should set the tone for a new genre. It is that good.

“I'm blown away by Lazarus! The characters and story are captivating. The animation is top-notch, the themes are thought-provoking, and the animated cinematography is exceptional. It's a must see series from creator of Cowboy Bebop (anime)!”

“Lazarus” was created and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, best known for his work directing “Cowboy Bebop,” which is also a dark, funny, futuristic ensemble adventure. The show’s other big draw is its fight choreography by the “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski. The action sequences are the highlight of the five (of 13) episodes made available for review.

The series finds just enough of its own identity to largely work. While it’s not as poignant or aesthetically sharp as Bebop, it has real potential thanks to its fun character moments and ruminations on how we collectively run from things we should confront.

Stream It, perhaps with an ounce or two of patience. While a pedigree that includes the creator or Cowboy Bebop’s creator and the fight maven from John Wick is impressive, It feels like there is a lot of story still to develop with Lazarus.

Visually, the show doesn't really stand out from other animes. The characters are less enigmatic and the pace feels incredibly laid back. The concept is interesting and the team has the potential to be something special, but so far, Lazarus has not fully utilized either in its first five episodes.

Lazarus is a disappointing return for Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichirō Watanabe, the first five episodes of which feel deprived of the energy and joy of his past work. The apocalyptic stakes provide some propulsion and keep it watchable, and the odd action scene shows a spark of creativity.

Aboslutely refreshing. I don't understand that one bad rating due to dubbing issues. Dubbing quality has little to do with the actual work. From soundrack to slick animation, it's really a callback to the best of Cowboy Bebop, mixed together with all the anxiety and frenzy of current day era.

This uneven series revolves around the search for one man, yet most of the episodes focus on failure, red herrings and dead ends. The hand-to-hand combat choreography is exceptional, yet there are many plot holes and unbelievable events. It's brought to us by the creator of Cowboy Bebop, who inexplicably reimagines the main character archetypes from that other series for this one, as if he couldn't come up with any others.

Loved the soundtrack and the animation, but the story, initially promising, stalled and rushed to the finish line during the last episode. The subplots didn't lead to something meaningful, and, of course, the shadow of 'Cowboy Bebop' was too big to overcome.

This anime is a major letdown. It started out with a great premise, but the episodes don't actually explore the ramifications of the premise. Most episodes are just wild goose chases that have some pointless action scenes thrown in to eat up time and almost no character development or meaningful plot advancement. The characters are poorly written with no real motivation to do the things they do other than on pain of death. The main character is basically John wick but with no backstory or motivation. I'm not even sure what one of the characters, the younger blonde guy, reason for being in the crew is, it doesn't seem like they bring anything to the table. Totally style over substance. Over reliance on magical 'computer hacking' to advance the plot is also an obvious crutch in the writing and is not in the least bit interesting. I hope this is only because I've only seen the first 5 episodes and maybe it becomes amazing.
