A great adaptation of the video game it's based on! Weirdly, it was first only unlockable for a limited time before Christmas, then became free as an early Christmas present. Not as much cookie characters and references to baking as I expecte- Oh... wrong media timeline. Anyway, this one's better, but I like that other one more. Bye-bye.

I’m not a musical person. Never have been. That whole “now we sing because… why not?” pact usually pulls me out of the story instead of drawing me in. With Wicked: Part I, something unexpected happened: I went in with my arms crossed… and ended up genuinely on board.First of all, it’s made with real care. Oz has texture, scale, and an art direction that feels designed rather than thrown together. There are shots and sets that make you want to pause just to catch the details. And when the film goes big, it goes big with zero embarrassment — like it’s saying, “yes, this is grand, and that’s the point.”What really makes it work, though, is the central duo. Even if you don’t love musicals, you can feel the presence, the chemistry, and the push-and-pull energy between them as their relationship shifts. The story also carries a subtle political-fable edge (without shouting its message), which makes it more compelling than the usual paint-by-numbers “origin story.”If I have complaints, it’s the length — and you can absolutely feel the “Part I” of it all. There are stretches where the pacing loosens, like the movie is carefully setting pieces on the board for what comes next. And visually, a few moments can look a little too digital, a little too polished, as if everything is lit to look pretty rather than to build atmosphere.Still, it surprised me. It didn’t turn me into a musical fan, but it reminded me that when the ideas are strong, the staging is confident, and the voices carry real emotion, even someone like me can give in. And yes: now I need Part II.

Wicked should be the guide on how to make a screen adaptation to an already beloved musical, it explains the contents of the original musical more, 10/10

Long disappointing, over hyped. what could have been a great movie was ruined by annoying songs and a two part story that I am not interested in the slightest!

wicked is a bloated, neon washed spectacle that mistakes volume for emotion and cgi for magic. the leads have strange chemistry, the pacing drags like a broom with a broken handle, and every supposedly 'epic' moment lands with the thud of corporate committee filmmaking. its not wicked its just weary

A waste of my day! No no no thank you. I think the standard for a great movie has drastically been reduced. It was chaotic, no good songs, no plot. Why was the movie ever made? I’m so confused. And the love scene??? Completely unnecessary. And inappropriate. No thank you.

This movie was fun to watch, it was a fun time, the characters were amazing, it's a nearly perfect movie, the only thing keeping it from a perfect movie was the runtime, it's way to long for my short attention span. 9/10. Super excited for Wicked for Good, comes out today!

This film takes the generational classic that is The Wizard of Oz, and spits in it's eye with character assassination and plot revisionism. Oh the WICKED witch that kills kids? Actually just a misunderstood allegory for minorities. The kind and nice witch that helped Dorothy? A selfish megalomaniac as insufferable as the director of this movie. Lyman Baum is rolling over in his grave as we speak.

Musically unbearable. It had been a long time since I had seen such an exhausting film. 'Wicked' is a musical that seems to forget that cinema also needs to breathe. Its two and a half hours of runtime are saturated with back-to-back musical numbers that offer barely a moment’s pause, generating an auditory fatigue that ends up testing even the most patient viewers. There is no balance between music and narrative; the songs follow one another without allowing the story—or the audience—to take a breath or absorb what’s happening. For those of us who are not fans of the musical genre — my case — 'Wicked' can easily become an exasperating experience. The plot, already rather unappealing, gets lost among endless choreographies and melodies that lack the strength to sustain such a lengthy film. It’s true that the movie conveys a noble message about acceptance and non-discrimination, and toward its ending, it gains a certain emotional maturity that provides coherence and closure. But that final stretch arrives too late, after more than two hours dominated by a superficial humor clearly aimed at a young audience — a tone that’s hard to endure for adult viewers. As for the cast, Ariana Grande begins with a performance that leaves much to be desired; she appears uncomfortable and stiff in front of the camera. However, as the story progresses, she manages to find some rhythm and shows that, beyond her vocal talent, she can handle acting with a degree of dignity. Cynthia Erivo, on the other hand, delivers a competent but overly constrained performance. Her constant worried expression becomes repetitive, depriving her character of nuance. None of the performances stand out — for better or worse. The acting overall is functional, serving the story, but never transcending it. The most remarkable aspect of 'Wicked' is, without doubt, its technical side. The production design and costume work are visually appealing and fulfill their purpose admirably. The sets, though evidently artificial, possess a certain charm and visual coherence. It’s no surprise the film has received recognition in these categories: the world it builds is carefully crafted and pleasing to the eye. Even so, the whole fails to take flight. 'Wicked' is a production that, despite its visual spectacle and well-intentioned message, gets lost amid endless songs, innocent humor, and an exhausting rhythm. A film that will surely delight lovers of the musical genre — but for many others, myself included, will feel simply unbearable.

Despite the generally high quality acting and the clearly hard work put in to the look of the thing, its a total manifestation of everything annoying in blockbuster films these days. Triples down even in some areas. Just goes to show the gargantuan and universal power of nostalgia, bending the fabric of logic and good taste such that general audiences simply give in or cannot overcome it, shoveling their precious finite resources into an unknowable void of infinite density of greed and malingering insanity.

wicked is such a good prequel to the 1939 the Wizard of Oz because it tells the story about the wicked witch of the west and the good witch of the North and it really just like tells you like a wonderful story about how the events of the Wizard of Oz ever happened and I cannot wait for wicked for good to come out to follow the main story of the Wizard of Oz to wear the main character of 1939 Wizard of Oz to where she's trying to get back home to Kansas but has to get the wicked witches broom !

I never have seen the musical play, yet I have enjoyed the famous Gravity scene online. This let me go into the movie without knowing any of the storyline, other than what I've seen from the Wizard of Oz and the Great & Powerful. I love musicals and dance - this was very well theater turned movie magic. The characters are all loveable - I simply cried seeing how fantastic Ariana Grande performed as Glinda. Bravo to Jeff Goldblum singing and dancing. Costumes, scenes and simply loved the land of Oz throughout the entire film. I am a HUGE wicked witch fan. This character I'm rooting for - the casting for Cynthia is phenomenal from the way she looks, the way the characters emotions are presented and simply the actress was born for this role. There were chills, a smile on my face, a compliment throughout the entire film for Elphaba. CAN NOT begin to express how long a year is going to take to see the second part!!! Bravo.

Wicked is a musical that had us fearing the worst with its candy-pink Barbie-like sets that are a bit too flashy, and a sense of superficiality heightened by Ariana Grande’s portrayal of a hypocritical clown. In short, it could have been a nightmare but it’s not. While far from perfect and still uneven as a whole, the film manages to sweep us into the magical world of Oz, so much so that the 2 hours and 40 minutes fly by. The songs are well executed, though few really stand out as hits. Let’s see what Part 2 has in store!

Other than a couple songs I found the music to be pretty 'meh'. Not sure why studios keep casting 'big entertainment' names in roles that outweigh the actor (Ariana Grande in this case). Ariana is 'ok' but I can't help wonder how much better Glinda would be with someone who can ACT as well as sing? (much like Emma Stone in LaLa Land (who can act buy NOT sing... not at all). The first 3/4 of the movie is pretty dull with the aforementioned issue with the lack of musicality... the last 1/4 of the movie really picked up (this the '5' rating)... leaves me hopeful the 2nd movie will be better. Like most hollywood failures - it seems that putting this into a single movie and cutting out unnecessary 'time stretchers' - would have gone a long long way to a more interesting, better paced single movie?

It’s been a very long time since a musical captivated me like this one. Adapted from the Broadway show created in 2003, itself based on the 1996 novel Wicked, the story serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, showing us how the famous “Wicked Witch” became wicked. A top-notch cast, stunning sets, and a grand, spectacular direction.

This film is average.I support the speaker. And I would add that dubbing in miuzikal is a total shot in the foot. Ariana knows how to sing and especially how to imitate other singers. Yes, she is great at imitating, but her ‘own’ compositions are very average. And her acting is poor. If it wasn't for her pretty face and her sweet charm, she would be singing somewhere at a fair in Alabama.Besides, the film is very disturbed. It touches on many taboo subjects which should never be part of a children's film.

This film is a great musical with great songs and characters the only thing not making it 10 is in the middle it was a bit slow and near the end a bit long. You can tell they were trying to length the film longer all in the Jeff Goldblum Scene Mild themes, fantasy violence, animal cruelty and innuendo. As well as racist towards her skin colour but nothing to much to worry about and Teaches you to accept people for they way they are and to not judge a book by its cover def recommend. Ready for part 2 and could not help myself spolling people who have not seen the theater show. So urm the ending is.. Whats the end it no spoliers??? Fine (sighs) You'll find out soon enough . This film stars Cynthia Erivo,Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum,Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode and Peter Dinklage.

They can sing but inserting africants in the first few seconds then disabled in minutes show a lack of respect to source materials vs modern political correctness. It's like they had a licence to oz, ripped off harry potter, added a butt load of grooming ideas. Does not hold a candle to play just a money injected money grab.

Wicked is a breathtaking musical adaptation that honors its Broadway roots while delivering a visually stunning and emotionally powerful cinematic experience. Director Jon M. Chu brings Oz to life with vivid production design and sweeping visuals. Ariana Grande shines with a transformative performance, blending her dazzling vocals with emotional depth. The chemistry among the cast and the heartfelt storytelling make every musical number resonate. Wicked is an unforgettable, joyous celebration of story and magic.

There are a lot of overlapping themes that play into this movie but I think that all of them made perfect sense toward the end and with how Elphaba's character related to Galinda as she worked to position herself as the most likeable of all the students in **** - it was complex and relatable because you could see how the differences in acceptance as it correlated to the student body could cause a split in causation for the evolution you see through both girls. I feel that Galinda is the perfect representation of the mean popular girl that every finds charming and sweet who actually finds herself challenged by the girl who is less popular and perceived to be strange due to the attention it brings. I am curious about the next installment.

Wicked is a well-crafted and successful Hollywood film—an enjoyable watch, for sure. But is it an Oscar-worthy film? No. It was good, but if it gets nominated for an Oscar, I’d attribute it more to political discourse than artistic merit.

For someone who has not seen the musical this refreshing tale of the wicked witch of the west not only shows how she is not a villain but a subject of her environment. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande leave us wanting more with their performance as Elphaba and Galinda. The visuals and plot leave the viewers to empathize with the large cast of characters. Peter Dinklage's portrayal of his character is one of the best and heart-wrenching characters in the film.

Absolutely SPELLBINDING. Unashamedly 10/10... ENCHANTING - AUTHENTIC - BREATHTAKING - EXHILARATING SO. MUCH. HAPPENED. before Dorothy dropped in!!! You don't even know. And this is only just the beginning - Part One (Act One, for those theater kids out there, #shoutout). If you know the show... and have all the music memorized by heart... this is like experiencing it all over for the first time. Wicked: Part One is new and fresh, but absolutely true to it's Broadway origin AND even pays homage to the classic The Wizard of Oz. From the opening frame, this film captures the heart of the story known and loved by countless fans, while giving us a new, close-up look at our favorite characters, and inviting a whole new audience to fall in love. EVERYTHING is enchanting - the production quality, the costuming, the music, the singing, the dancing, the cinematography. The detail poured into this film makes it a true production, reminiscent of Beauty and The Beast (2017), The Phantom of the Opera (2004), and The Greatest Showman. The musical numbers are this balance of solo, duet, and ensemble hits. They are so full of life, you wish they were twice as long, because you'd happily sit in the theater for another hour. A couple songs are broken up by dialogue, which can be a let down... you just want to embrace the song, but those lines have to drive the story forward. Given the buzz and fame surrounding Bailey as Fieyro, he didn't upstage Erivo or Grande at all. No doubt he had his Act I moment - Dancing Through Life - but the story maintained the focus on Elphaba and Glinda. This story has such deep heart. I remember that from seeing it on stage... and it feels like the film took it even deeper. The characters are nothing short of complex, emotional, dare-I-say "real" people. It's a tale that shows us no one is entirely good (Glinda, bright and happy, but a self-obssessed, rude young woman, desperate for approval), or entirely evil (Elphaba, dark and brooding, but just a wounded young woman trying to make her way in a world that hates her). As a sort of anti-hero origin story, it opens our eyes to see that a "villain" is so much more under the surface (we'll see the culmination of this in No Good Deed from Act Two). It is our decisions, our actions that determine who we are, who we become. Sometimes, a shift in perspective shows us that the "villain" is only just as hurt as we are. That makes a powerful story. ... to my fellow thespians... it's everything we ever dreamed it would be and more. This will be a film to enjoy more than once in theaters - including the sing-along version releasing in late December. What a Christmas present. ... to my friends who have never seen Wicked on stage... it doesn't matter. You are blessed to be able to walk into a theater to experience this powerful story, instead of waiting for a chance to see it on Broadway or your local stage. Go watch this film. Thank me later. This is your chance to witness the magic of theater AND film in the same moment. This film is another reassurance that Hollywood is healing... or at least, some studios are trying to. There is no woke agenda, no political perspective, no opinions being shoved in your face. This is pure, honest, entertainment at its finest. It's as if you were tasting true Chicago deep dish pizza after eating copycats for years. In this matter, Wicked: Part One joins the 2024 ranks with The Fall Guy, Twisters, Deadpool & Wolverine, The Wild Robot, and Gladiator II. And I couldn't be happier to live at the same time these films are being produced. Wicked: Part One is simply iconic filmmaking. Pretty sure Elphaba levitated me off my seat in the end there. ... Part Two simply CANNOT come fast enough. Y'all brace yourselves for the LONGEST intermission we've ever endured. We can do this. Take your bathroom breaks. Refill that popcorn bucket a few hundred times. Celebrate your birthday. Rewatch Act One over and over again. Belt out the album in your car. Find a pointy black hat for Act Two opening night. Get every lyric memorized. Try defying gravity. And we'll be back in our seats for Act Two before we know it. There is SO. MUCH. MORE. to happen before Dorothy drops in.

In general a very well produced musical and great casting overall (especially for the two main characters). The reason I don't give this a 10 is that the movie is waaaa too slow in its progression of events...which is in turn generated by the constant musical performances. So it's not so much a flaw of the movies but a matter of personal taste: if you love musicals, you'll love this one.
