This is actually a powerful drama about taking drugs and how they can ruin everything. It is compelling viewing but very difficult to watch. I found the ending totally enthralling and upsetting as well as disturbing. It is serious from beginning to end with no room for comedy or anything even remotely light-hearted. Be warned that this is compelling and powerful viewing. Not that I have experienced it but I found this a scarily realistic descent from drug-joy to drug-hell. Can’t say I’ll ever watch it again though.

Bosh I didn’t feel much to this movie there are some interesting stuff to it but it’s also very confusing, and not making sense it didn’t feel like a film rather than just some education video of drugs whilei its not as bad as the mother or the fountain or Noah I still consider this second film from aronofsky mediocre. Seriously people it’s not that great and the charachters are flat and unlikeable especiallly Jared Leto oh I hated him in this he constantly throws fuss over nothing his chemistry with Jennifer Connolly is nonesexistent they can’t act and make a terrible on screen couple why Didn’t they just break up it makes no sense this is just dumb movie with charachters doing dumb things I felt disoriented much of the time and what really bothered me about this empty shell of a film is how the music and scenery repeats itself it’s so boring one of the most boring films in that regard. The only thing good about it outside of a few moments of interest is Ellen bursting and her performance she’s by far the best actor in this but she still plays some confused women hallucinating things that arent real like some refrigerator coming to life ( seriously what’s the meaning of that???!!!!! ) her performance may have been praise worthy but ive seen far better performances especially of 2000 ( the patriot , gladiator, traffic ) the best way I could describe this movie is like listening to the Beatles number 9 but in film form I was disoriented much of the time watching it at least in number 9 song along with other experimental/sound collage/avant garde songs were interesting in a way. Avant garde is better offf as music than film this type of movie is probably my least favorite film genre it can be interesting at times but not enough to make it a below average film in the end the only films I like from this director are black swan, pi and the wrestler but I still don’t consider either of those godfather level masterpieces requiem for a dream for me is a D+

Really good acting. Love the ending. All the characters are very believable in their storylines. Really liked it a lot. Good pacing too

Almost too degenerate loaded for me. But for the sake of the film's purposes and theme it was necessary. The movie follows a group of characters who all are chasing this feeling, or idea, of joy. The film creators make it clear that they go about it the wrong way as each character has their own quarrel with their conscious and the drugs they turn to. The crew of this movie does their best work at creating 'environments'. The scenes in which a character becomes completely disassociated through drug use or exposure to social manipulation and begin to panic were severely uncomfortable. Fantastic "stay away from drugs" movie, haha.

A perfect movie. The range of emotions felt, and the depth of them are fantastic. The cinematography is creative and flawlessly executed. Excellent acting by a perfectly selected cast. The soundtracks main theme is so powerful, it has been reused in numerous films. The main theme if the story told through various characters sticks with you in the best way possible.

Jared Leto is so unbelievably bad in this. The rest of the cast, Jennifer Connelly mainly, and the soundtrack is really good. Last hour was **** up, uncomfortable, and depressing. Probably the most messed up thing I've ever seen.

Lives destroyed in pursuit of pleasure... It was one of the saddest and most satisfying endings I've ever seen. The soundtrack made me tension to my bone.

A visual masterpiece of cinema. Every performance is phenomenal. The story is dark and depressing but illustrates the effects drugs have on our main characters. The cinematography is also excellent with many unique shots that give so much character to the film. Writing is excellent. Overall a masterpiece of cinema.

I like Darren Aronofsky, and Requiem for a Dream is one of his better and I think his most powerful film. I love the style in which it is filmed, there are lots of split-screen technique, exaggerated sound effects and huge close ups, and all these manage to be stylishly used. The music is stunning too, Aronofsky directs superbly and the script is brutal and very honest. Requiem for a Dream has one underlying theme, the creeping menace of addiction, this theme is explored in a lot of forms and with chilling and compelling effect. Not only that, the highs and lows of drug-taking are conveyed. The story is hard-hitting, moving and draws you in and the characters feel real. The acting helps with this, Ellen Burstyn is amazing and gives one of the best performances of the decade. Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly are also excellent, and Marlon Wayans I think hasn't been better. In conclusion, a powerful film, while not all people may like it it is for me one of the most important films on this subject. 9/10 Bethany Cox

+Talented cast deliver superb performances
+Fantastic use of surrealist imagery
+Excellent cinematography
+Powerful musical score
-The bitter taste of human frailty although potent is not easy to watch (even if fictionalized!) Requiem for a dream is a masterclass in using every aspect of the medium to its best potential. The camera work, visual effects, cast, soundtrack all come together en force to stimulate the viewer and provoke emotional responses as we are walked along the sorrid tale as each of these people succumbs to their addiction. In many ways it could be viewed as a perfect film.

The film wonderfully shows how drugs affect the human body. It starts quite innocently, but after a while the main characters begin to consume addictive substances, which subsequently affect their body. We have an excellent soundtrack composed by Clint Mansell and played by the Kronos Quartet. The quality of the film is also aided by the actor Jared Leto, who edited the role of Harry here. Overall, in my opinion, this is a masterpiece and I definitely recommend you watch this film.

The first movie I watched that I considered a masterpiece, this is one of those powerful movies that might change your mind set or influence on you and the way you see the world.
This movie is about 3 different story lines that are connected to each other with 4 different characters, the protagonist his mother his girlfriend and his best friend and how all of them get influenced by drugs or should I say how all of them end up by their own sins / mistakes. The movie touches upon almost every known issue from racism, family conflicts, trust issues, extreme self confidence, neglecting the surroundings and more.
Beware as the movie is really hard to watch as it doesn't shy away from its ugliness.

¿The American cousin of Trainspotting? The edgy tour-de-force into the life of a junkie, his friend, his girlfriend and his widow mother; everyone caught up into their own self-destructive pipe dreams. The final sequence requires of a steel stomach. The sequence of fridge is for cause nightmares.

Maaan, what a film it is! I finished it almost now, and this shocked me and said me again and again "never use drug!". I have watched lots of men when they using drug. But after spending my time on watching this masterpiece, I am sure I will never use it.
This is the pretty valuable "don't use narcotic/drug" ad I have seen ever. Actually, I watched lots of films, even show in theatre, but this one is really powerful in its own way. Also can be added that in terms of acting, especially performance of Jared Leto, it is type of the film I would love to rate as 8 star.

Oof. After bursting onto the scene with the bleak and unforgiving directorial debut that was "Pi," Darren Aronofsky followed it up by tapping into the bibliography of author Hubert Selby Jr. and crafting this cinematic equivalent of one basically saying "you ain't seen nothing yet." As far as cinematic sack taps go, "Requiem For A Dream" isn't necessarily the most severe. But, dear God, is it going to be a massive buzzkill to whatever the hell you had going on in your life. As a visual experience, it is simply exhausting, but it's not all for naught. Many critics cite Aronofsky's provocative filmmaking style to be a bit excessive, if not obvious or lacking in finesse. And though I might find this critique to be true in some cases (i.e. "mother!"), I think "Requiem For A Dream" might be that rare case where I couldn't see any other approach doing the story justice. This is a movie that hits that "best of both worlds" zone of provocateur filmmaking, where the product ultimately ends up being unnerving and difficult, yes, but also thought-provoking and called for. Do I ever want to see it again? Not really, no. But, man, did Ellen Burstyn ever deliver a career-defining performance, if I ever saw one.

Requiem for a Dream is not a film that you just pop in on any given night. You have to be prepared to watch four characters slowly spin out of control due to drugs. This isn't a wholesome, the world is great kind of movie. It's painful to watch, but yet it's hard to not get invested in the story and feel curious about how it'll all end. There isn't much about this one to not like. The writing is great, the story is great, and the characters are all very interesting on their own. Oddly, the only thing I had a bit of an issue with was the cinematography. I just wasn't much of a fan of how it was all shot and the overall look of the film, but that's more of a nitpick than anything. Requiem for a Dream is a must watch, even if you can only get through it once.

Acid social criticize is its Highest point, among with shooting technical, positioning camera in ways totally different perspective and that works very well for plot.

WARNING! A masterpiece over here! Personally, I have watched 'Requiem for a dream' three times, but the counting will carry on for sure. First in this movie, I must say, impress the directing, brilliantly combined with the topic - drugs, how they affect you and destroy your life. No chance, you miss that. Typical for the dramas, the accent is put on the details, the visual influence by facial impressions and sounds. Here, oh Lord.. Crazyyy directing. We could argue a lot about what's more important - good directing or good story and in the end we end up without conclusive answer, BUT some movies just impress you with that art of setting things in place. Second, Jared Leto in main role makes the movie even more touching. This man is god damn beautiful, talented and most of all there is something about him, that let him very very much impact you and drive you in the story. And that last thing represent supreme characterization of a masterpieces. The whole acting by every one of the actor crew could not be better. . Shortly, perfect cinematography and soundtracks, story and acting, basically everything. A movie, that will touch you and make you shake.

It's clear that Darren Aronofsky didn't want to make something new and special in the characters' arcs or the story, but he wanted to put you in the shoes of the characters with his creative use of visuals and sounds, and he succeeded.... kinda! Thanks to Aronofsky's direction that harmonized surreal visuals and sounds with the characters' feelings and experiences, I found myself experiencing and feeling what the characters experience and feel while watching the movie. Due to that, this is without a doubt one of the most disturbing and intoxicating movies I've ever watched. The problem is that the dramatic aspect in the movie actually harmed the movie; the dramatic scenes at the end of the first act slowed the pace of the movie down.
It's not the only or the major issue I've with this movie. The real issue is that the creative direction that elevated the stereotypical arc of Sara Goldfarb, wasn't enough to do this with the stereotypical arc of Harry and Marion. Also, the oscar-worthy performance by Ellen Burstyn (I really wanna know how she didn't win an oscar) and a few complications in her character, Sara Goldfarb's part was way better and more compelling than Harry and Marion's. I really didn't found myself relate to the characters of Harry and Marion so much, despite the great performances that Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly gave.
The perfect example that can affirm that the dramatic aspect wasn't the most powerful thing in the movie is the character of Tyrone; it's a very bland character and it was very hard for me to relate to its subplot, Marlon Wayans was very good though. I love Requiem for a Dream. It's a movie to experience not to watch. It really proves that Darren Aronofsky is a real talent that with his artistic direction can easily mess with your mind. (7.5/10)

In this film, the dreams of an American family will be transformed into his own doom, as they turn into deadly addictions. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, it has a screenplay by Hubert Selby Jr. and the participation of Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly. This is one of the most disturbing films I've seen. But this is not a defect. In fact, its the greatest quality of this film: it changes the way we think. Shocking and assertive, it shows how a person is able to dispose of their own luck, focusing on what he want and wasting the good things he already have. And the more disturbing becomes when we recognize, in the attitudes of the characters, our own attitudes or people we know. Decidedly, its a film that puts anyone thinking, it was made for this and not as entertainment. The script is exceptional, the concept is innovative. The way the director drove all the work is very competent and was decisive for the final result. Speaking about final, the end of the film is disturbing and not recommended for sensitive people, as well as several other scenes. The actors performance is good, particularly Ellen Burstyn, who is unrecognizable in her role. The sets and costumes are regular. The photography is excellent, becoming darker and sinister as the characters go "down the pit". The soundtrack, by Clint Mansell, is one of the most powerful and disturbing in recent cinema, having been numerous times reused in various other artistic works, films, journalistic works etc.

This movie shows what different types of addictions can do to people really well. Basically it is about drug addiction but the reasons why each user does the drugs are different and this movie shows how addicted people tell themselves that doing drugs is the way they will achieve what they want, even if for achieving drugs they have to go through many nasty things.

Darren Aronofsky downward spiral tale of four drug addicted New Yorkers is far from uplifting film and is easily up there with Grave of the Fireflies as being one of the saddest films I’ve ever seen. However, it’s also a great Greek tragedy-style psychological character study pursuing a hollow-version of the American Dream that isn’t afraid to show the ugly side of humanity. Worth seeing for Ellen Burnstyn's stunningly transformative performance alone.

Requiem for a Dream depicts a story of a retired mother, Sara Goldfarb, living in an apartment all by herself - only having her neighbourly friends living near. Her son, Harry, is a drug dealer and an addict, along with his pal Tyrone, and his girlfriend Marion, whom wished that she could be a fashion designer. Sara spends most of her time watching her favourite reality show on TV. One day, she gets selected to appear on that show. She wishes to go on with her special red dress but cannot fit in it due to her weight. She goes on a diet but doesn't seem to all work that well. Her next choice is diet pills, which wasn't a very good idea. Sara starts taking them irregularly and develops an addiction. Harry, Tyrone and Marion on the other hand, struggle to keep up in the drug business and begin losing money and drugs. As the film progresses, we see all of this get worse as their addictions spiral out of control. Requiem for a Dream is really sickening and it breaks all expectations. It is absolutely fantastic but not one of those films you would feel comfortable watching twice (although I have watched it more than twice). Every actor in this film play their roles brilliantly, especially Ellen Burstyn. It's incredibly gut-wrenching. The story and writing by Darren Aronofsky is phenomenal. It's so well written it blows my mind. I easily give this movie a 10/10.
