In this second viewing of 'Psycho', I tried to judge the film without being influenced by its legendary status or by the need to go against popular opinion. I consider it Hitchcock’s most powerful and memorable film, largely thanks to Anthony Perkins’ performance, whose mere presence creates tension without exaggeration. However, Janet Leigh’s acting feels emotionally distant to me from a modern perspective. The famous shower scene still impresses me, though more for its editing, rhythm, music, and visual construction than for its performances or effects, which now feel dated. I believe the scene would have impacted me more if I had experienced it in the 1960s, during its original release. Despite this, Hitchcock’s visual storytelling remains extraordinary, and the black-and-white cinematography is essential to the film’s identity. 'Psycho' is undeniably a classic, but even classics can be judged through modern eyes.

This is a great but flawed movie. The driving looks really fake. The voice over inner monologue is not necessary and ruins the mood, we get what they’re thinking without spelling it out to us. There are plot holes like changing cars in front of the cop who would see the new car to follow her. Also she acts so guilty, surely she’d be able to hide her guilt better. The music is good but it’s so overused it becomes repetitive in the first act. Some of the pacing is slow like the endless cleaning up. The finale in the basement is pretty goofy and all the exposition at the end is superfluous. But there is a lot to like, phenomenal direction, excellent writing, very good acting, engaging characters etc. The conversations are so engaging and that is where this film is really excellent. For every moment of brilliance there are elements I don't like. I’m really torn on this film, I have really extreme opinions about different aspects. It’s an excellent story but when you know the ending it loses the impact and repeat watching is less engaging.

All these years later, and Anthony Perkins's character is still superb. No wonder he ended up type-cast. Janet Leigh is truly a great actress and really brings the whole film to life. The storyline is great, and keeps you watching right to the end! Excellent!

Over rated, reminds me of my first murder. The police officer character is so boring and over acted

Hitchcock is one of the greatest for a reason, and that film is one of the many examples of his talent, great scenario, brilliant filming, and that last frame with a smile is truly scary even to this time, indisputably classic would recommend for sure especially if you like horror.

Plunging it’s comfortable middle-class family into becoming barbarians to protect everyone the love. Wes Craven’s Hills Have Eyes manages to be a key movie shaping horror for decades to come and a brutal illustration of the enduring human spirit. It asks us what we would be willing to become to protect the ones we love.

While it may no longer have the surprise factor it had upon release, Psycho remains a horror classic that has stood the test of time.

Bad luck for a bored bombshell, who opportunistically pockets a large sum of money, skips town and unwittingly pauses at a mass-murderer's motel to lay low. To say more would be a disservice to the uninitiated, even if all the major plot points have already been spoiled by way of cultural osmosis. Sixty years is a long time to keep a secret, especially when the most important scenes have been so frequently mirrored. Compelled to operate on an extremely low budget (studio brass had major doubts about the premise), in Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock leans on his finely-honed directorial senses - artistry and atmosphere, primarily - in lieu of dazzling sets or gaudy wardrobe. The end result is a very moody, up-close and personal piece, entirely appropriate for such a character-driven tragedy. Subtext is the rule of the day, whether it's foreshadowing the awful events to come or nervously reveling in their aftermath. Much is said independent of the dialogue, in other words, and in such visually compelling ways! The guiding hand of frequent collaborator (and graphic design legend) Saul Bass is apparent in more than just the dynamic opening credits. Bass may not have actively directed the iconic shower episode, as is often rumored, but his tight storyboards and Bernard Herrmann's indispensable musical cues essentially make the scene. Not to downplay Hitchcock's involvement, either; it takes a special brand of mastermind to assemble and curate such talent, to piece it all together in just the right order to achieve maximum dramatic effect.

The most interesting aspect is how skillfully Hitchcock swaps genres. The whole thing isn't horror - it starts as a noirish mystery and veers into a thriller with touches of psychological horror. Hitchcock uses a lot of technical skill to trick the viewer into seeing what really isn't there. The cast is brilliant. This movie works wonderfully.

Great Movie, very iconic with some great shots and great atmosphere. Wouldn't say it has great performances but still it's forgivable. Not very complicated storyline, non the less it's probably one of the greatest horror movies.

For a film released in 1960, Psycho is truly a groundbreaker for its time. I mean come on! Hitchcock was ahead of his time when creating his films, Psycho in my books is always a favorite to watch whether it's halloween season or just year round!

The film Psycho was brilliant for its time, intensifying the audience's reactions by having a strict presentation and through the characterization of Norman Bates and Marion Crane through the symbolism of taxidermy birds hanging on the wall. Alfred Hitchcock's marketing was excellent, contributing to those who saw it only to be able to watch it from beginning to end. This presentation allowed for the movie to be seen in its entirety and for those watching it to avoid distraction and not miss a single aspect of the film. If you even look down at your phone and miss part of the movie, you may become confused and even miss essential details Hitchcock didn't want the audience to miss. The best part of the film is that the ending is unpredictable. And the conclusion is quite shocking. This presentation contributed to the audience's enjoyment of the film. Hitchcock also does an excellent job of establishing the bond between each character and giving the audience insight into their relationship. The audience witnesses this when Marion Crane and Norman Bates have lunch in the parlor. During the same scene, Hitchcock is able to use birds to represent each character's motivations, from the birds hanging in the parlor to Marion's last name being Crane and her being from Phoenix. Something I wish Hitchcock had done differently is set up what happened to Norman to cause him to commit the actions he does. I wish Hitchcock had given us a better understanding of Norman's mother and their conflict to heighten the terror on the screen. I encourage you to watch Psycho if you enjoy older horror movies, but be aware you might be left with many questions, but you have the ability to make your own assumptions about what happens, just as I have. And don't forget to keep an eye out for the birds hanging on the wall.

First Time watching it in 2023. So I didnt know what was about to happen here. At the end it just blew me away ... it made me respect black and white movies even more.

76% this was my first time watching it and i know it’s a classic i like the second act and 3rd act the whole first act of the movie is boring and norman bates is an interesting character in this movie

Terrific movie ! Great pace, amazing filming, intense music, awesome acting, thrilling atmosphere, attractive characters, serious scenario, iconic scenes, staggering visuals, superb ending, unforgettable plans, excellent lighting. The kind of feature that is a testimony of the 60s and a bit before. It manages to tell much about the society of that time with a dramatic story. Definitely a movie that influenced many and many others in the genre. And more than anything it has aged very well ! Rare are the scenes that truly are outdated. Clearly deserves its must-watch label 500th critic for my profile !

The original Slasher movie is a one of the best Black and White Films I've ever seen and for good reason, considering that the director has the last name of Hitchcock.

As this film began, I was quite captivated. I was interested to find out what happened to these characters. Then Norman Bates appears, and he is exactly the kind of character we want to see in movies of this genre. He portrays an inadvertently unsettling persona. You get the distinct impression that you are dealing with a damaged character who doesn't display that harm the way other characters might.

i personally dont know how the hell this movie got a must watch award. nothing happens for 70 percent of the movie and then at the very end of the movie it gets to the good point so if you want to watch this movie just skip most of it and get to the good point theres a reason the creator of the movie didnt let you leave the cinema as thats cause it was actually just the shower scene padded out into a feature length film so he could put it in the cinema

A woman, on the run after stealing a large sum of money, stops at a lonely motel, run by the young and creepy Norman Bates. Simply one of the best films in the history of cinema, as well as one of the best horror films in the history of cinema, shot by one of the best directors in the history of cinema. Hats off to the great Hitchcock.

My favorite horror film of all-time, Anthony Perkins was perfect casting as Norman Bates.

The main them of this was such an instant classic banger for me. Can see all the inspiration this gave to future filmmakers.

What more can I say other than this is a classic among slasher movies from 1960

classical from albert ask for a remasterization as it is a little bit old but sill really really nice

I admit this is the first time I've actually seen this classic film and it is indeed a classic. I can imagine how shocking the really very tame yet attempted to be borderline horror scenes appeared to the cinema audiences when it was released. Undoubtedly the musical score adds a lot to the tension and perceived atmosphere of this film - it still seems very effective for that purpose. I wasn't aware of the entire story, apart from the main scene (the shower scene) and one or two other basic plot details, so I thought it was interesting to watch it and learn more about the full context of the plot. On watching, I was surprised that the key scene happened so early on but I did feel it did well at keeping the viewer feeling a bit edgy and tense and keen/curious to learn what might be discovered about the mysterious Mr. Bates and his mother. There are certainly some plot twists present and while I wouldn't say its by any means constantly an edge of your seat watch, I appreciated that there was more of an investigative, crime/mystery side to it. I think this is a good example of a psychological thriller of its time and certainly if your keen on Hitchcock films then this is an obvious must see. By todays standards, its very tame but as an example of a film that slowly compels the viewer to want to know more and that has a chilly atmosphere, this is most definitely a good one. Yes, I would recommend this film.

This film comes close to being a four or even five-star film, but what keeps it from achieving that status is the Simon Oakland psychiatrist character. His oration is not only a complete waste of time, but it insults the intelligence of the rest of the film, preventing it from achieving true greatness. If only his character and his scene had been cut.

My expectations for a 60's movie were pretty low, but this movie way exceeded them. The writing and acting was pretty great, it was nothing too crazy but i wasn't expecting the quality of marvel movies from some probably low budget 60 year old movie :)

Hate using the term “masterpiece” since I feel like it gets thrown around too much but that’s what this film is. Among the greatest from Alfred Hitchcock and my favourite horror film of all time.

On of the most significant movies, technically, the screenplay and character development, etc, ever made. I just didn't find it as scary as people say.

There's really nothing new to say about this film. Anthony Perkins' performance is brilliant as well as Hitchcok's direction.

The standard of the thriller. It is impossible to admit that the film was shot 60 years ago, this is perhaps only a picture. Despite the fact that in those days films on color film were already shot at all, the BW film goes much better. Just structurally, the plot relies on fantastic suspense. So it's only right to show him Hitchcock.

I'm not into this movie as much as other do. But I can't lies that this movie right here is one of a masterpiece. as a normal person who didn't have much of a film knowledge I pretty enjoying this film.

A masterpiece by Alfred Hitchcock, an unforgettable and unrepeatable work with excellent and knowledgeable actors

"Why she wouldn't even hurt a fly." Dude, Anthony Perkins is so good. So so good. So good in fact it's kinda epic. Also, Janet Leigh has such expressive eyes, which explains why the camera is always focus on her face. At one point while watching the movie, I was reaching for my drink until a certain scene caught me off guard and froze me in place. That scene is where Marion Crane is waiting at the traffic light and sees her boss crossing the street, both locking eyes. It is more effective if you watch it yourself. Why do I have a feeling Alfred Hitchcock was a serial killer in a past life.

If a movie which is 60 years old effects you, then for sure it is brilliant. Psycho which came in 1960 was ahead of it's time. Each and every scene of this movie is perfect. Not even a single scene was unnecessary. The acting by all the actors especially the role of Bates was perfectly done. The plot was different and had a lot of surprises at the end. The climax was really unpredictable. Movie had a lot of iconic scenes like shower scene and Bate smiling climax. The direction could not be better. Full marks for direction. Even after being a black and white movie, it is none less than coloured one. Overall, I will recommend this to everyone. A must watch.
