One of the worst movies in the franchise, along with the Covenant. Please end this arc and save Romulus.

The aim of the film was to explain the origins of Alien from scratch. In Ridley Scott’s hands, the plot naturally retains the unsettling atmosphere of the 1979 film. Its only flaw—which isn’t particularly serious—is that it leaves some questions unanswered.

WOW! The vision and striking lead up to explaining where it all started was an under-appreciated view into so many mythological and metaphorical applications that blended right into a stunning epic. I was right there on the edge of my seat for the whole ride! Loved every minute of it.

After horrible Alien resurrection, this feels like something finally is happening, instead of just 3 movies on a row- ‘Here’s alien, he kills all the crew, then he crawls to the escape pod and we decide depending on how movie performs if we gonna film the next one.”. Although lots of questions remained unanswered, which deems the movie unwatchable again.

Prometheus is visually impressive, with striking production design, strong worldbuilding through imagery, and consistently beautiful landscapes. Unfortunately, the film collapses on a writing level. The dialogue feels stiff and unnatural, making conversations sound like scripted recitations rather than human interaction. While the film is filled with philosophical references about creation and humanity, these ideas are mostly superficial and rarely explored in a meaningful way. The central mystery about the Engineers and their hostility toward humanity remains vague and underdeveloped. Michael Fassbender stands out as David, delivering a performance that balances calculation and artificiality, but most other performances feel merely functional. Prometheus ultimately confuses the appearance of depth with actual depth, resulting in a beautiful but hollow film.

Wow, what a great film! I loved it. Second only to the original Alien film imho. Great storyline and decent acting and direction throughout. Fassbender was awesome! I'd definitely watch it again!

Greetings from Lithuania.
"Prometheus" (2012) is a great sci-fi thriller, adventure epic. It works as a prequel to "Alien" as well as standalone story. Production values are first rate. Cast was great and everyone did uniformly good job with Michael Fassbender stealing every scene he is in. Many disliked this film because it plays in many genres - it is one of the rare sci-fi movies which can be safely placed under adventure, thriller and even horror sci-fi movies. Overall, "Prometheus" can be uneven, but it is a great sci-fi movie which has a big scope, plays with big ideas and doesn't forget to show some chilly moments - all wrapped up in a terrific production values. Special effects, cinematography, set design and music were all excellent.

An Alien movie, a prequel, that destroys the mystery surrounding these fascinating creatures by trying to explain their origins and ruining everything. When I saw it in theaters, I almost fell asleep, and only at the very end does something happen...yeah a tiny bit that amounts to nothing and generates no excitement. This movie feels completely hollow. On top of that, it made me lose interest in anything related to the franchise for quite a while. Prometheus was a bad idea for Alien.

Visually stunning with potentially interesting ideas , Prometheus is unfortunately let down by a muddled plot and a cast of characters constantly making stupid decisions.

Una buena película de terror que es entretenida, que no llega al nivel de sus predecesoras (Covenant y Romulus), pero aun así no está nada mal

Though Prometheus may seem different from the traditional Alien films, in terms of story tone and overall structure, it isn't that far removed from Ridley Scott's earlier Alien. The visuals and cinematic guidance make it not only the slowest-paced film in the franchise but also one of the most visually stunning.

Ridley Scott's legendary attention to detail is on full display here, although I couldn't help but wish for a more complete, uninhibited plot to go along with it. For all his promises that Prometheus wouldn't just be a prequel to Alien, the director sure seems stretched to bring the two films together. That's a pity, because while the core questions that Prometheus asks are worthwhile if not unique, its constant urge to poke and prod several of Alien's richest, most eccentric mysteries keep it tethered to the ground floor. A more compassionate cast may have smoothed over some of those rough spots, but this tight squad of explorers is thoroughly cold and conniving, naïve and unlikable at their best. I wanted to adore this, and for the whole of the concept-heavy first act I did, but by the onset of the final standoff I'd been bucked like a fledgling space cowboy. Fantastic, breathtaking special effects, stirring atmosphere and an astounding vision of near-future tech only go so far.

Am amazing prequel. Not your standard alien movie if you compare it to the other movies but that’s why I like this movie a lot. A well needed change!

still torn on this one: on the one hand there are a lot of interesting ideas (why not make something like STALKER in the ALIEN universe?)on the other hand every "character" is immensely stupid, "motivations" are just there to serve the plot, every interesting idea needs to be dumbed down for the audience so they have something to watch while eating cheese nachos and texting on their phones

Ridley Scott tries to explain too much taking away from the mystery of the franchise. But solid vfx, acting and interesting twists save this film and make it a worthwhile entry

Anybody at this point shouldn't be underestimated Ridley Scott's work for making this prequel of an iconic franchise, as his make his prove at least for me that he also can make a great prequel, Prometheus, a prequel to the Alien franchise that feel like it's own original film and story, it's reminded me of the first Alien Vs. Predator movie where there is also these bunch of group of people discovering and analyzing a hidden place, the differences is that Prometheus fills with a way greater story, a way greater characters and characters development, a way greater production, and way greater filmmaking technique, it is almost as exciting and as intense as the original 1979 Alien is what i felt, Michael Fassbender is giving one of his best performance as David, he is just perfect for the role, Noomi Rapace as the Ellen Ripley of this movie was also great, and the rest of the supporting cast were also pretty good, and i also want to mention the main score of the film which i found pretty memorable, minor flawed like the human alien stuff that a bit silly to see, some of the acting decision were a bit weird, but overall i'm surprised on how much i was engaged with this film, nobody i'm sure was interested on seeing a prequel to Alien, but you take my words when it was directed by Ridley Scott himself, it is simply greater than you expect, i found Prometheus as a great prequel, and it's one of the best prequels i've ever seen.

Not a good movie with no Xenomorphs in the movie that is an origin movie about alien!

The art direction and cinematography alone make this science fiction film worth a watch. Ridley Scott returns to the Alien universe for another highly original take on the story. It has a strong cast and some interesting characters, although some of them aren't given enough time to develop. Some of the events are unbelievable, and there are some logic holes in the script, but it's still a decent popcorn movie.

"-Did you watch previous Aliens movies?"
"- No, I never... " R. Scott shaking his head, he just learnt there were Aliens movie.
That apart, Prometheus is interesting to watch, watched it in 3D - it was eye candy, not as Avatar, but good enough 3D.
Plot is promising... some stupidity goes on screen - well, what is not without a fault;
Noomi Rapace is a good choice and lovely to watch, even when she patches herself with a stapler; Idris Elba is good too.
In this, and ONLY in this Alien-related movie, Michael Fassbender`s character is a good asset too.
Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron are lost and outplayed by those first couple of actors. Logan Marshall-Green - meah, forget about.
Walking out of the cinema and thinking: would not it be interesting to watch Noomi`s character arriving Engineers planet, doing cool stuff, being a badass again? Can`t wait! (no, really - they will film it, right? none would kill the best part of Prometheus off-screen, right? what am i even thinking...)

If you can set aside the “Alien universe” baggage and the fact that the map guy gets lost, this is a wonderful big budget Lovecraftian sci-fi horror b-movie. Continuity and common sense is all over the place, but who cares?

A beautiful movie suicided by idiotic over-explaining. All the great movies (random example, Alien) explain nothing. You get images and characters pov and you deal with that. So.. smurf planted life on Earth np. 4 BILLIONS years later (hello ?) same smurfs warn about the nigh end coming from other smurfs. Or same smurfs being bipolar. Nobody gaf. That had to occur year zero but they had an accident. Ok cute. BUT.. 2000 years laternobody checked that station or supplied it or whatever. Js. Smurf got to eat, unlike some cosmic entity. Anyway, it would be a great movie with some cuts on the explainin'

The most controversial movie of the 2010s after Last Jedi. So, your question is: Did I like it, or hate it? Well, I am technically neutral. This wasn't horrible, but not good either. Just, had its weird philosophy, questions, dreamlike atmosphere, and worldbuilding, even if it was not done the way fans wanted it to be.

Looks good, but feels a bit hollow to me. 'Prometheus' - which serves as a (loose) prequel to 'Alien' - didn't excite me and I didn't feel like I got anything from it. It's still a good film and it is a pleasant looking one at that, with neat special effects et al. I also like the casting for this 2012 release. Noomi Rapace is probably the film's standout, though Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba are also involved - the latter two feel a bit underused, we get a fair bit of them both but still I wanted to watch them more - especially Theron, who feels a bit tacked on.

Annoying acting. Did not like the main girl and the way she executed her acting, i felt like it was too over the top in every way and was distracting me from the movie. Also the scares weren't the good kind of scares, just those kinds of **** gross i dont-wanna-imagine-human-body-in-that-twisted-form kind of scary. Be my guest if you wanna be disgusted-scared for 2 hrs.

Entertaining but overall a highly convoluted mess with terrible casting (except Fassbinder).
There are some epic sequences. Covenant is a far better film.

I don't want to pretend to have an audience, but I believe that if a more patient and kind reader has taken the time to read some of the notes I've written in other films, there's something I let on when I write: I don't usually read much about a film before seeing it. I follow my instincts a little and let myself be surprised or disappointed, leaving the readings for before writing these notes. That's what I did with this movie, watching it without realizing that it was a kind of prequel to the "Alien" franchise. I realized it later, in the final part of the movie. The film begins with the stellar voyage of the exploration spacecraft "Prometheus", which sets off in search of a moon where there supposedly would be conditions for life, the home where primitive astronauts who, millennia ago, gave rise to life on Earth will have come. Of course, there are latent tensions within the crew: some believe strongly in the existence of these "engineers" (that's what they call the so-called ancient astronauts), others not so much, while the ship's commander seems to have a kind of agenda of her own. What will they find? It's better to see the movie... The movie was a lot better than I expected. I'm not a fan of the "Alien" franchise, and I'm not the best person to judge how well it articulates with existing movies. I think the script makes good use of the "ancient astronauts" conspiracy theories, which were heavily publicized by TV shows dedicated to them, but I confess that there is a lot of confusion in the script, things that I just don't understand. There are somewhat disconnected, loose scenes, and moments that I couldn't understand. The direction was in the hands of Ridley Scott, who did a very satisfying job, basing the film on a mix of sci-fi with visual effects and quality CGI. Unfortunately, I think a lot of the scientific concepts used in the movie are more sci-fi fantasies than serious science. The cast has several strong names, and almost all of them are in excellent shape and give us impeccable work. I particularly liked Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, Michael Fassbender and Logan Green. Despite being talented and fluent in her role, I think I've seen Charlize Theron in better shape and more at ease with other characters and in other works. Technically, the film is remarkably visual: in addition to the best CGI you could find, the film makes good use of very careful and skillful cinematography. The extraterrestrial world we are introduced to is as familiar as it is strange and unusual, and it manages to create in the audience a sense of permanent tension that becomes increasingly sinister. The visual, special and sound effects are the best there is and work well. The soundtrack is critical to the tense environment and works satisfactorily.

Prometheus, as originally conceived, was an excellent rethink of the Alien universe. Still, the author of the original source, like no one else, can restart the franchise, especially since the last couple of years, Ridley Scotts films are very good. But everything went wrong. The plot is weak and it completely crosses the main canon. It is too riddled with Bible themes. And even an excellent cast does not save the film, although it is not as bad as its sequel.

First off, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Idris Elba's acting was top grade and second, I still feel awful right now, but in a good way, from watching this film. Ridley Scott, you are amazing. David, Michael Fassbender's character, was really interesting and a thought provoking character. The other characters, but namely Shaw from me, were also really great and fleshed-out. The visual effects were vibrant and amazing. The horror elements were way out there in ways that were very unsettling and pleasant. The film further expands the universe of this franchise and leaves the viewer either more thoughts to work with, or more confused, but for me it was more thoughts. Quite pleasant, I think that's all from me.

Prometheus is an eminently rewatchable film that provides new layers of meaning with each repeat visit. How often does a master filmmaker get to revisit their original oeuvre and recreate an even bigger world around and about it? The myth of the engineers and their world changing experimentation is absolutely romantic, compelling and terrifying at the same time. It hurts even more to see how badly utilized this new mythos was in the follow up Covenant. The true mark of success that Ridley Scott achieved was igniting years of debate around the origin and nature of the engineers and their creations. Deep connections to established historical finds on earth make this origin story even more personal - the myth of alien astronauts, benevolent or cruel giants from the stars with incredible, magical technology - creators and destroyers of worlds. Getting back to the film itself - such gorgeous cinematography and production values. I recently rewatched in 4k format and developed a greater appreciation for small clues hitherto unseen - for example navigation hologram destinations in a reactivated ship of mass destruction. David is himself a conundrum and a polarizing figure. Was his programming to blame, or the algorithmic output of his treatment at the hand of cruel masters. The android is a central theme in the alien mythos, an expression of creation and self awareness. The only criticism I have of Prometheus and the sequel Covenant is the proliferation of human stupidity. Predecessor films did not showcase human hubris and blundering to such a great extent - protagonists always took calculated risks. If anything the buffoonery of crews almost seems to justify their fate and reduces sympathy accordingly. Ridley Scott may still have time to catapult his mythos to legendarium, if his subsequent sequels after Covenant retain purity of spirit with his expanded universe. I for one look forward to seeing more of this wondrous unravelling and exposition.

This prequel to the Alien movies is a beautifully shot, thought provoking thriller.
Fassbender and Rapace are great as the leads in this flick.

False labeling for me as it is not truly an Alien movie. I think underneath is a great story worth to be told with great philosophical motives, lore and worldbuilding. Maybe it should not be marketed as prequel to Alien which it is definitely not and this his angered many fans. It is the first movie in the Alien timeline. In a cave an ancient cave painting is discovered with a star map and huge beings pointing at one star. Archaeologist think it is an invitation maybe from the creators of mankind. An exploring space mission is sponsored by Peter Weyland the head of the Weyland Cooperation (Yes that one). There they hope to get answers to all questions humanity had since the beginning. So the story starts and it has potential. While I like the ideas, concepts and philosophical aspects the movie has many problems. There are a lot of dumb decisions by the characters. Some are in the category “They rightfully deserve to die for this stupidity”. I must research if there is a Darwin Award for fictional characters. Also poor or bad since, negligence for basic scientific procedures and safety measures. It is in some cases so absurd that it can be used in a bad B-Movie. I know many critics like this movie and parts are deserving the praise but overall it is a hit and miss. While I am at it lets talk about the actors. I am impressed how to get such a poor performance with such a great cast of actors. To clarify even more. Everyone here is acclaimed and they have earned many awards. I blame the failures to the script and directing not the actors that have proven themselves in other movies. There is Noomi Rapace as Elisabeth Shaw. Such a great performance wasted with some stupid scenes. Michael Fassbender is excellent here and maybe the best performer in this movie. Charlize Theron, Idris Alba and Guy Pearce cant shine. Especially the make up looks unconvincing on Guy Pearces character. In total the special effects are good with some exceptions. I think I give my final rating here. Overall this is missed potential. They knew what they want to archive but have given not enough care to remove silly scenes and WTF moments. There are many parts that are ridiculous and drag this movie down. I think a 5/10 is fair and I can see this movie in the 9-10/10 range if done better.

Don't get moved by negative reviews, Prometheus is a good movie and a good installment in Alien franchise. Prometheus offers an experience rich in entertainment, visual prowess, imagination and a fascinating script. Direction is wonderful and true to the genre, visual effects are amazing, characters are engaging, and the score is both beautiful and haunting. From the opening sequence, you'll know you're in for a cinematic treat. Overall, you will love this movie and enjoy it till the end.

I think this film really captures the vastness of the universe and the comparable insignificance of humanity. It also captures - for lack of a better word - the 'alienness' and terror of space and what lies out there. The script could have been better but overall Prometheus is really something different, it is a filmmakers film. It has those elements of world-building that elevate it beyond your average movie experience. Music is also very good - it as does the movie play out this whole crisis of humans realising that were not really being as big and powerful as we were led to believe. Naomi Rapace is very convincing in her role as is Michael Fassbender in his. The rest of the cast are more or less just fodder. Many of the scenes also evoke a real sense of horror. Worth multiple watches.
